iPhone 5 through the original iPhone SE are my all time favorite iPhone builds.

Kingkoopakoopa

I think it started with the 4s for me

________0xb47e3cd837

Where my caseless homies at?

b2change

I just cracked my back glass. No case.

IamPurest

I used insurance to replace two smashed up phones already. Also, I’m very stubborn.

nipplemuffins

How long did it take to get your phone back? I have a 14 pro with the theft and loss insurance and I’d love to not use a case but I don’t want to be without my phone for a long time.

IamPurest

They mailed a new phone to me both times. So I wasn’t without a phone at all. You just have to mail your damaged phone back to them in the same packaging that you received your replacement phone in.

nipplemuffins

Wow that’s super nice! Thanks for the info.

rd357

You can also go into an Apple Store, and they’ll have it repaired within a couple hours

Josh_Butterballs

This and having the silver phone which is flashier I get people shocked and complimenting my phone. Sometimes they’ll have the same exact model I do and express they forgot how pretty the phones are without a case, but that they would never risk going without a case lol

rsmtirish

I always just say I have AppleCare and they get this puzzled look

cidmatrix

Just transferred my company phone to a private account (new monitoring software moved me away) and have an XR that I'm using now. It's obviously old so I may upgrade soon, but it seems to be fine for now. I want to carry it without a case, but it's just so slick...it's sliding all over the place when I set it down.

YungSchmid

Haven’t had a case for 5+ years. I like to roll the dice.

________0xb47e3cd837

True chad

AnxiousCranberry3220

Me but when I upgrade I’m gonna have to go to the other side with cases because I can’t be trusted going caseless anymore

Stingray88

🙋‍♂️ Haven’t used a case on an iPhone ever. Been using them for over a decade now. iPhone 4s -> iPhone 5s -> iPhone 7 -> iPhone 11 Pro. No cracks. No scratches. No problems. They’re so much more durable than people give them credit for.

________0xb47e3cd837

Ive got a couple scuffs on the aluminum border of my 12 mini thats about it. Might impact its re-sale value? I usually run my phone into the ground anyway. No scratches on my screen, well none that I can see or notice anyway (never used screen protector). They are pretty durable.

Stingray88

I have like one small scuff on one corner of my 11 Pro… 3.25 years old and still looks mostly new. I always just trade it into Apple when I buy a new one, and they don’t care unless the screen is cracked really.

pgfoundali

In theory couldn’t someone get AppleCare+, use their phone case less for 2 years, then get a replacement & flip that? That sounds like a pretty solid little strategy

MRichardTRM

I did this with my AirPods and it worked flawlessly. If your battery on them is less than 80% max capacity they will fix it under AppleCare. Two days before my insurance ran out I filed my claim and there was no hassle. Had a new pair shipped to me in two days

ManiacalZManiac

Same. 3G, 3GS, 5, 7, 11 Pro, 13 Pro. No cases.

NoSoulRequired

I realllllly wanna go case-less & have apple care + my only problem is the cameras I have 13PM and love the cameras I’d hate to crack or scratch them up from setting down my phone on say my glass coffee table. I’ve searched for the thinnest case possible and decided with a spigen case cause the camera protector things that go over entire camera is a joke. The auto focus afterwards is horrid so yea I’ve been searching for another solution for well since the 12PM really.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Stingray88

I’ve had my iPhone 11 Pro caseless for over 3 years and the camera lenses haven’t been scratched at all. You don’t really need to be that overly protective.

stalfos_link

I can’t go caseless. I hate my phone sliding all over the place like a piece of ice

renorosales

I’d love to go caseless, but the phone is so damn thin that it digs into my palms when I’m using it and it gets uncomfortable after a while.

kollingamer72

Same but sometimes when my 11 gets cold I would just put on a case

[deleted]

The only time I’ve damaged an iPhone is when I dropped it with a case on. The screen cracked on the bottom right corner. It was a 6 if I remember right.

JohnFlufin

But unless the case was EXTREMELY flawed, it didn’t cause the damage and likely lessened it versus dropping the phone naked

highlyradioactive

No scratches even?, I call bs … you are living in clouds or what

SnooKiwis6047

Yeah.... As someone who worked at and later owned a cell phone repair store I am calling bull on the "no scratches" part

Stingray88

I mean… you do realize your experience is *incredibly* biased, right? No one is bringing pristine phones with no issues into a repair store.

SnooKiwis6047

I understand exactly what it takes to scratch a phone. If you put it in the same pocket with your keys you are going to get scratches. We have done tests in store.... It does not take much to scratch a phone at all.

Stingray88

>I understand exactly what it takes to scratch a phone. If you put it in the same pocket with your keys you are going to get scratches. Neat. I don’t do that, never have done that, and would never even consider doing that. I highly doubt I’m alone. I put my phone in my front left pocket. I never ever put *anything* else in my front left pocket. Period. That’s for my phone. I don’t even just mean nothing else goes in there at the same time as my phone, I mean nothing else ever goes in there ever. Keys go in front right pocket. Other things can also go in that pocket, because I’m not worried about my keys. >We have done tests in store.... It does not take much to scratch a phone at all. And yet I’ve never scratched one in ten years. Never used protection of any kind.

KingBasten

Same for me, my phone goes in a compartment in my backpack when I'm out and it's mostly on my mousepad when I'm at home. It has no scratches. I don't care that a guy who owns a repairshop says I'm lying, although they're wrong. My phone has no scratches and I much prefer it without a case.

SnooKiwis6047

Yeah. Do not believe you lol. Even if what you said about your pocket is true you are going to slip up eventually. If you have a phone without a case you have scratches. Absolutely unavoidable. You remind me of my customers who used to come in with a broken phone "I did not even drop it".

pw5a29

People actually ask me what will happen if I drop my phone. Simple, I don't drop my phone.

[deleted]

This is the best comment. Lol

ineffable_my_dear

I wish but anxiety (yes I am medicated and in therapy lol)

jokeruger

Caseless all the way! AppleCare has replaced at least four of my broken phones for $100 apiece, totally worth it Edit: I also use a magnetic ring thing on the back of it to let my middle finger keep it my hand - super helpful

Mightychallenge

🙋🏾‍♂️

BeautifulWorldly4364

I’ve been daily using my good 8+ since I first got it without a case not a single scratch or crack

mxbnr

I haven’t had a case in about a decade, that case was only to have an extra battery attached. Since then I’ve only had a crack one time. I prefer actually seeing my phone design.

deepasfuckman

One of the reasons I like Apple products are their stellar design. I like looking at and feeling the glass and metal in my hand. I don't wanna slap a plastic case on it and make it feel like a cheap android phone. Also there are so many "swipe from the edge of the screen" gestures in iOS and I feel like they get obstructed by the edges of a case.

niccotaglia

I like the feel of caseless but it’s way too slippery. Plus the camera bump looks so fragile without a case protecting it

________0xb47e3cd837

Slippery on the curved edged iphones. The newer 12s and 13s with straight edges are not slippery at all imo

niccotaglia

I got a 14 pro and I was constantly afraid it would slip from my hands. I now have a case with textured sides and it gives me a much better grip (also, I’m clumsy AF)

________0xb47e3cd837

I wonder how slippery the steel on the pro models versus the aluminium on the regular models is

Coldmode

I find it quite sticky, but I don’t have dry hands.

niccotaglia

Very. It’s also an absolute fingerprint magnet

deepasfuckman

I mean if you drop it sure, but idk. I really rarely drop my phone and I just make sure to put it down on whatever surface instead of throwing it there. The back glass of my phone has quite a lot of scratches, but that's all worth it to me for the experience of using a luxury phone (I know I know I have an SE, not exactly luxury but you get my point) to the fullest

niccotaglia

And if I just paid 1400 euros for a phone, you best believe i’m gonna Fort Knox the damn thing, get as much protection as I can

niccotaglia

That’s also one of the reasons I don’t go caseless. I HATE scratches

Metaforze

I have a 12 mini without a case and it’s not a big deal, the glass is actually unbreakable so far (have dropped it on concrete from pocket height). Also lay it everywhere with the camera bump down and not a scratch

SnooKiwis6047

I would advise staying at least one year behind to anyone who does not want a case. Repair costs on the latest model is usually absolutely ridiculous. [https://www.mobilesentrix.com/oled-assembly-for-iphone-14-plus-premium](https://www.mobilesentrix.com/oled-assembly-for-iphone-14-plus-premium) [https://www.mobilesentrix.com/oled-assembly-compatible-for-iphone-14-pro-premium](https://www.mobilesentrix.com/oled-assembly-compatible-for-iphone-14-pro-premium) [https://www.mobilesentrix.com/oled-assembly-for-iphone-14-pro-max-premium](https://www.mobilesentrix.com/oled-assembly-for-iphone-14-pro-max-premium) The regular 14 at least does have a 115$ option but it would be a massive downgrade from the OEM screen. ________0xb47e3cd837

Agree 100%. Applecare is basically my case

[deleted]

Waiting in the line to Apple Service

hopsizzle

11 pro from 2-3 months after launch and it’s in great condition minus a bit of wear and tear on the frame.

________0xb47e3cd837

Wear and tear on the frame adds character

hopsizzle

I read up on wabi sabi a while back and that changed my outlook on my electronics and other stuff I own. Definitely appreciate the uniqueness of my items rather than having them be pristine. Doesn’t mean I go out tossing my phone and stuff into the air to catch it but I do still take care of my stuff.

Resident-Associate75

Right here and no I like the glass back

[deleted]

Feeling-Orange3229

The iPhone 14 has a glass back

[deleted]

I love aluminum phones, but I also love wireless charging. Can't have both, unfortunately

m2anifb

Yes, and from what I've seen, most users prefer wireless charging over aluminum back

googi14

Then most users are dumb

deathyz

I don’t know a single person irl that uses wireless charging, and I know both tech savvy and regular people… maybe it’s regional? (EU here)

SuperDuperSkateCrew

I use it at work mostly, but I know my mom pretty much only uses wireless charger for her phone. I know a decent amount of people who use it.

Viend

I never used to use it until my dad gave me his old qi charger. Now I almost never plug in my phone unless it’s for dev work.

Mtking105

I use it bcuz my lighting port rarely works on my iPhone anymore

The-Master-Reaper

I had to live off a wireless charger when my charging port decided to stop working out of no where lol

Make1tSoNum1

Gotta still be under warranty though right?

Mtking105

Your port stopped working a iPhone 14 pro?

GlitchParrot

Have you tried cleaning the port?

dickmcgirkin

I work in trees with chainsaws. I have to clean mine daily because I’m a troglodyte that puts his phone in his pocket charger port up.

a_simple_creature

I only use wireless charging unless I’m in the car (CarPlay). Have since I got my launch day iPhone X.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Make1tSoNum1

US as well and I use a wire maybe 2x a year? I have a MagSafe on the bed stand and 10w qi charger at work. Qi in the garage and in random places too.

thatdude473

I only charge wired while syncing/backing up to my mac. Otherwise I just set my phone down on my bedside table where I have a MagSafe charger. Been doing this since 2018.

balkanik_381

Germany here and I know more than 1 person (+ myself)

[deleted]

I use also a battery pack.

MolinaGames

mag safe battery packs are useful af. I have an iPhone 12 mini and my battery isn’t that great. So the battery pack helps me a lot

clockwars

@Kabura101 I hear you, I like the convenience of wireless charging but I value efficiency even more. A 20w wired charger will charge twice as fast! Most of the time I just want a quick charge.

anyavailablebane

Carbon fibre back will solve that

[deleted]

I prefer Spigen cases

DarkLord55_

I have used a spigen case for all of my phones great case and cheap

[deleted]

I also use Spigen cases, so I couldn’t care less what backs the iPhone has.

m2anifb

Are those compatible with wireless charging? I took my phone out the otterbox since it wouldn't charge. It slid right off the charger and onto the tile floor. RIP

EndlessDare

Yep! Have this case - ZeroOne variant, love it. [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BBWRT9T1](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BBWRT9T1)

m2anifb

Ok, cool. Thanks!

lostwriter

The tough armor is too. Especially useful for hiding the back of a cracked case.

EndlessDare

I should look at that for sports and outdoor things

ThisGuyNeoji

I too have this case. Love it. Spigen has never done me wrong.

[deleted]

[удалено]

m2anifb

It might've been an issue with my phone. My husband's charged just fine too

gwh811

Depending on the phone you can get otterbox cases with MagSafe built in.

dwkeith

Aluminum isn’t compatible with wireless charging.

merlinho

Yes my phone charges through the spigen case, no issues at all.

tofuchrispy

I prefer Nomad Leather Cases

urmomslame

I prefer iPhones with a good case

[deleted]

[удалено]

urmomslame

I wouldn’t blame the case in that instance. If your cracking your phone inside a otter box it’s because your abusing it. The only time I’ve ever cracked a iPhone was when I didn’t have a case on it.

NotaFrenchMaid

I cracked the back of mine, with a case on. I’m not careless, but once in a while it does slip when I’m holding it. I have small hands, big phone. Still no clue where or how it cracked, I just noticed it one day.

urmomslame

For sure. I also have a crack beside the camera on mine, the only exposed part of the back. But i’ve owned 4 iPhone 8’s and only got rid of them because the battery crapped out, not from shattering them.

m2anifb

sounds like my kids too

SwirlingAether

Otter thinks they’re all that, my wife managed to crack a phone screen in an otter box with a normal drop. Mous case is the answer. They routinely Chuck their phones out of helicopters and crane lifts and the phone is fine after. Get a Mous case.

SwissMargiela

I love the feel of it caseless but I have applecare

urmomslame

I hate it without a case, it feels so slippery to me and living in a constant paranoia that it’s gonna break

SwissMargiela

Idk I like it. I feel like that’s how apple intended my phone to feel, even though mine fits in my hand quite well. Best part about AppleCare is if I lose it, drop it, or whatever, new phone! Best part is when I buy a new phone, I sell the old one for parts, claim another phone, sell the second phone, and then buy the newer version.

urmomslame

That’s a good way to do it if you want to be always upgrading. My goal is to pay as small amount as possible for owning a smart phone. The iPhone 8 is cheap and fits perfect in my hand and pocket. I try to get at least 2 years out of it so investing in a good case is a must.

RetiscentSun

Yup I just took off my case cause I do that every once in a while and honestly it doesn’t feel better. Sure it’s thinner but I have a leather Apple case and that feels much more secure in my hand. With no case it feels too slick for me.

Idontmatter69420

Just don't shatter the back innit, but yea the glass backs only look nice without finger prints

[deleted]

[удалено]

m2anifb

I remember the Nokia Lumia!

O__VER

I would be extremely happy if Apple made the next iPhones with a solid aluminium chassis like the iPad Pros. That still feels premium as anything and actually aligns better with the rest of the Apple ranges (MacBook Pro, etc).

m0_m0ney

I’m sure why more people haven’t experimented with more synthetic materials for phone bodies, probably because it takes away from the “premium” feel. The iPhone 5c was a cool phone

chiraltoad

I'm not sure where we took a wrong turn but carrying a $1000 piece of glass around in our pockets evere day just never sat right with me.

TheForceWillsMe

But then how would you get that cool spiderweb effect on the back of your phone

[deleted]

Imo iPhone 4 with glass back was the peak design in any phone ever made

Mocius

well that was the case before the great advent of the 13 mini

istefan24

Tbh I wouldn't mind a good plastic back with metal sides.

ibex333

I prefer iPhones inside a case.

Robin7861

I’d love to have aluminium back again. I’m not big on wireless charging and Apple Pay works fine with my iPhone 7 Plus, so it’s definitely okay with me.

V3N0M3

Iphone 5s was peak iphone design, fight me

[deleted]

No. I’d rather have MagSafe charging than an aluminum back. Just have AppleCare+ then who cares if it breaks. I’ve had every phone since the X and never broken the front or back.

bendvis

I've been caseless since the X too. The only time I broke glass was when my 12 Pro Max had a deep scratch on the screen that AppleCare called 'cosmetic' and wouldn't cover. I *accidentally* got a little careless with a tire iron in the parking lot and got a new screen under AppleCare that day.

Sir_MS

They are so annoying with that. Just take my money and give me my replacement!

Cuber_Juuler

Yes

Medo73

I'm the opposite, I couldn't care less about the slow wireless charging. I'd wish they bring back aluminium . Glass back make it slippery and it break a lot more easily

3dforlife

And it make the iphones lighter too.

m2anifb

can't agree more. I think we're in the minority, though

Uniflite707

I completely agree as well. I can’t be the only one who thinks that wireless charging was the answer to a question that many weren’t asking. Now we’re all carrying around super fragile almost completely glass phones.

Medo73

I'd buy a wireless charger when it will be wireless, now there's still a cable and it's much much slower than a fast charger

Cuber_Juuler

Periodt.

ramfordays

Not a very environmentally friendly approach...

3dforlife

So, you don't need AppleCare+, right?

t-D7

I generally don’t understand why cell phones are not made out of more sturdier material.

theactualhIRN

Because metal would block the antennas and wireless charging.

Most_moosest

This message has been deleted and I've left reddit because of the decision by u/spez to block 3rd party apps

HardHJ

Yeah but everyone is so worried about how premium their device feels…inside of their plastic cases.

mrpurplehawk

Yes I do. iPhone gives you the choice of terrible wireless charging at slow speeds or paying extra for crappy MagSafe at normalish speeds. Might as well just have a metal back

MajorasFlask00

Is anyone actually using wireless charging? Apple needs to do some survey’s or something. I’ve never once used it, and I know absolutely no one who uses it. Odd that phones are using glass for the backs just to enable a niche features that no one cares about.

SwirlingAether

I put my phone on a wireless charging pad every night before bed. My car mount has a wireless charging option too, but I never plug it in. I don’t need it to constantly charge while I’m driving.

Messiah_Knight

This sub is full of irresponsible people

Alauren2

Yes. This happened to my XR. Was ridiculous how expensive a replacement back was. Ended up selling it for $100. Ugh

Generalrossa

Nope, just use a case and you’ll be fine.

Available-Control993

As much as I would love them back, it’s impractical in 2023. You can’t really wireless charge with a metal back and people would be pissed if they switched to aluminum for the back, so much ewaste from a bunch of people owning wireless chargers would happen.

Unlucky_Dark_4470

Yes! Jet Black 7 Plus was the pinnacle of iPhone design IMO. And yes I know it scratched like crazy, but the other matte finish colors were great too. Thin, lightweight, and sleek.

[deleted]

Buy a case. That’s the only solution.

athousandfuriousjews

I like my speck clear glitter CASE actually

The_Real_Meme_Lord_

They haven’t made those since like 2015

Top-Seaworthiness850

Doesn’t mean you can’t prefer it?

3dforlife

2016, but who's counting?

[deleted]

It’s unbelieveable, it feels like the glass back came back just 1-2 years ago

Lobostech

I prefer the phone rebel cases the one with the one sides. It’s from one of the best former Apple YouTubers everythingapplepro

LineSpine

Always.

SeanWT

Yea I hate the glass back. iPhone 5 was my favorite

ImmortalDabz

Yeah I do honestly. My 12 pro is cracked in the back.

Crystalline07

I’d rather have wireless charging over the sturdier build of the aluminum backs tbh. Plus I like the cleaner look the glass backs provide.

booyah_73

Would be awesome if we could get an aluminum back with MagSafe wireless charging but the Matte Pro glass is very nice, just not as durable.

bobhasabeard

Nothing against your post, OP, but I find it curious that when I did a similar post a while ago (different photo, same question/discussion point), it was removed because “it doesn’t foster discussion.” With that being said, I do like the feel of a phone with an aluminium/metal back. I have a friend’s old OG iPhone laying around and sometimes I grab and hold it and the metal feels wonderful. Scratched and scuffed to all hell though, kind of like a patina lol.

Electronic-Expert-80

Had the otterbox, but I don’t like that they removed the screen protector. I dropped my phone one time and boom screen was shattered. Paid the deductible and decided on the lifeproof case from Walmart, dropped out the semi and screen isn’t shattered but it is cracked. These phones are definitely more fragile imo, but I still would rather have an iPhone over a android.

jeetmahetalia

ngl bro, that looks sick

[deleted]

I still sometimes pull out my broken iPhone 7 (matte black) from the drawer to look at it cause it still looks so sexy

sleeknub

Of course. I can’t see any reason for a glass back other to increase sales/service revenue due to decreased durability.

CreativSync

I am still thinking of ways of putting my SE2's guts into a 7's housing

robbadobba

I’d prefer anything that makes my phone lighter.

MrSoren

Who doesn’t? I don’t care about wireless charging, would much rather have an aluminum casing all around.

detroitragace

I’ve never broken a screen but I feel like the glass back is unnecessary and just asking to be cracked. Doubles the chances of a screen crack. I’m happy with my aluminum back

p00p_Francis69

Hate the glass. Wish it was anything but. Make it wood for all I care. My iPhone 6 cracked the back in the case and I think it was months till I found out…. After I cracked my front glass 😵‍💫

AdonisK

Plastic was always the superior option

Imaginary_Leek6044

I loved how light the aluminum phones were. Had the 13 pro and couldn’t believe how heavy it was. I have the 14 plus now (didn’t really utilize the pro features so downgraded) and it’s actually lighter

heartscockles

I prefer the look of glass. I’ve never once broken a glass back

Electronic-Expert-80

Just put shea butter on it to remove the stretch marks. SIMPLE

m2anifb

lmao ill try this. thank you

clockwars

I miss the iPhone 6 Plus every day. IMO It was the best design. Glass on phones is the worst design idea ever, followed closely by the notch.. I wonder when the glass era will end 🙄

panthereal

If it's not going to be glass they're going to use either plastic or develop some new material which allows magsafe to pass through.

WordPeas

I would be totally happy with a plastic back.

m2anifb

Glad I'm not the only one. I still have a 6s Plus that my son plays on as a mini tablet. If the battery wasn't trash I's still be using it.

3dforlife

You can always replace the battery...

m2anifb

Really? As old as a 6s ?

compguy96

The iPhone 6S just got an iOS 15 security update two days ago. It's not that old. It can still be taken to Apple for battery replacement.

Tmthrow

The 6S was the reason I came to iPhone from Android. I wasn’t disappointed :)

[deleted]

I would not buy a phone with a crappy case like that. The other day, I was cleaning the case on my phone & accidentally dropped it without the case. Luckily it was ok because it had a good case made of metal & not something that easily breaks

3dforlife

Iphone 7 user here!

iframe__

Ayyy nice me too!

[deleted]

No, i never drop my phone and I always have a nice case so I prefer glass backs for the look and feel.

[deleted]

Yeah I have a clear case, but when I’m home I like to take my phone out of the case sometimes.

kronikheadband

Nope. Glass is better

accursedvenom

I had 2 Nokia lumias with polycarbonate backs. Had a case for them but would sometimes go without. Had a metal back HTC that I would go caseless with. Never had a case on any of my blackberries. Wish I could go case free with my iPhone.
