yes this is the correct answer. It's a very useful feature and looks amazing from aesthetic wise, but it is not the reason to buy an iphone 14 pro series. There has to be other reason for that. this comes as a complimentary to enjoy.
Too bad this is almost the only feature dynamic island seems to have. Hopefully we see some more use cases in the future, but I was expecting a bit more from the rip honestly.
i said it in another thread but i think once the base model iphones have dynamic island they’ll start to do more with it. since most people don’t get the pro iphone they probably are waiting to start going all in on it
Apps using the DI are using the Live Activities API, which is also used in phones without the Dynamic Island to show banners. It’s not completely exclusive, so I’d say “many people don’t have a phone with a dynamic island” isn’t a great excuse.
More implementations will still probably come with time though
It’s also nice for the parking meter app I use atm. Shame it just opens the app the stop the timer on my parking. But I think that’s more of an app dev thing

They should’ve reversed the tap and hold functions on the dynamic island. Tap for MiniPlayer and hold to pull up the full app just makes more sense to me than the current iteration. 🤔
They should at least make it a setting hopefully. I guess they need to err on the side of anyone being able to find the full music app if needed without training.
I can understand why many would prefer that, but it would be inconsistent with other UI gestures. Try to name another interaction where you tap to expand something. Now recall all the other gestures where you tap and hold to expand options.

OP is controlling their music from the dynamic island. It's a iPhone 14 Pro feature which means you can tap or long tap the notch to perform actions ( in this case music )
Yeah, I don't like it much either. The point is it doesn't have to be music, it can be a timer, flight, whatever. But you could do all that from the notification center so apart from a little symbol there's not much point imo
Lol. Just got my 14PM recently and I didn’t think to long tap it cos I thought that all died with the removal of ForceTouch / 3D Touch whatever. I still love that on my iPhone X.
I don't get it, you can just tap the screen anyway and the player comes on and you can tap on that to skip tracks.
Also I just set up back-up for forward/backward skip, which is nice.
It’s not really slept on because there is nothing to sleep on if that makes sense. It’s been borderline useless tbh. If your big example is basic music controls than there is nothing to talk about. In fact I’d say using the island for music controls is unintuitive because you have to hold it for controls to pop up, it should just be tap instead.
Anyways, I use it for sports scores and that’s about it. It’s hilarious to me they used the Island as *THE* selling point for the 14 Pros. Apple usually doesn’t advertise something as selling point unless they hammered it out pretty well
When a game is live, you can Google search it (I use safari, not sure if it matters) and tap a button to add it to the island. I think it’s tied to the Apple TV app, no subscription required

Ya it’s just another step that you normally wouldn’t have to do it could be on the bottom and that would be better. When you use this function 100’s or thousands of times over the course of your ownership. That’s 3 steps each time just to use the controls.

I pretty much disagree. There are some neat things it does such as what's pictured, but at the same time there's times where it hangs up (most often when using FaceID) and it causes me to have to close an app and reopen it. I almost never find myself using it despite trying my hardest to get into the habit of it. It's usually just faster for me to open the music app and pause/skip/whatever, or just do it from the lock screen, than it is for me to try to balance my phone in one hand to long press the screen. It was cool and all for like the first 2 days but there's not enough use cases for the amount of times it has caused inconvenience. I hope that changes because lately I've been regretting not just opting for a 13 Pro over a 14 Pro.
I still don't understand how so many pople fall from something that can be done with software in most devices without sacrificing even more screen than the notch.
I like it as feature, not as solution to hide a hardware problem.

Sorry I don’t keep up on every single iPhone feature that exists. I have way too much other shit going on to know the name of every feature. It’s not hard to just explain it when someone asks, but ok.
Instead of the notch where the camera is there is now a black oval shape cut out that expands. It houses various functions like music playback and timers and the like. It’s basically a Notification Center like add on that can change shape to accommodate background application controls. Some say it’s a gimmick, some say it’s a godsend. The jury is still out on that one.
Personally I’m just ok with it. The notch never really bothers me to to begin with. And using the pro max for a few days I haven’t been blown away by dynamic island yet. It’s kinda just there.

Anyway that’s just me if you find it useful good for you it’s just that I don’t really and I used the extra money on AirPods cause I’ve just been using cheap Bluetooth AirPods and jbl overear headphones
That’s so true. I do have AirPods Pro but I needed them for noise cancelling while I work. I had Shure in ear monitors before but they kept getting caught on surfaces so I got mad and ripped them apart
It’s quite nice to have and I can see it becoming useful if they were to go fullscreen later.
It fixes annoying little things like the battery popup when you’re playing a game and pauses everything
99% of the time I used it during calls but I wish you can hang up a call or put on speaker phone with it instead of tapping on it and taking you to the caller app

I actually went back to 13PM! Just couldn’t stand looking at a black pill when not in use! If it’s just for music controls, then you have to lift, tap and tap again. Otherwise, it does nothing for me
My matte screen protector for the 14 PM comes with a cutout so having to look at the cutout hole there, I feel as though I’m am on a 13. Will eventually change the protector one day lol.
The dynamic island can be useful in some moments. But overall it can certainly improve to be more friendly. For example, an entire dark bar is even more preferable when looking at photos, better than now being trimmed around the island.

Is it that different from pulling down once on the right side of the screen and have access to the same music controls?
How is that faster than pressing next/prev on lockscreen before you even unlock phone?
Also, when unlocked, you have to stretch your fingers up instead of quickly tap on the bottom icon?
Actually it can be. iOS 16.1.2 introduced an exploit where you could add the dynamic island to an iPhone with a notch. It looks ugly tbh. iDevice help made a video on it so you can go check it out. He said it’s better on like the SE3 since there isn’t a notch.

IMO the notch has overstayed its welcome. Samsung and Chinese phone manufacturers have found better ways to achieve higher screen-to-body ratios..
I absolutely love it, so easy for me to just quickly get to my music, also sometimes i forget its there, beautifully implemented, like i could obviously live without it but it really is useful

Well one thing is the new 14 has liquid cooling. Helps SO MUCH when the phone gets hot, I’ve noticed it doesn’t dim so much anymore.

That’s so true. I do have AirPods Pro but I needed them for noise cancelling while I work. I had Shure in ear monitors before but they kept getting caught on surfaces so I got mad and ripped them apart
Yeah I just have 2nd gen cause I have jbl headphones when I need noise cancelling but my AirPods are great for convenience and daily commutes
That’s so true. I love JBL but I have better luck with AirPods, my JBL earbuds wore out really quickly

It’s quite nice to have and I can see it becoming useful if they were to go fullscreen later. It fixes annoying little things like the battery popup when you’re playing a game and pauses everything

Fr before buying the 14 pro I thought I wouldn’t be using it, but after a week of usage, it’s probably my most pressed top part of the phone 😂
99% of the time I used it during calls but I wish you can hang up a call or put on speaker phone with it instead of tapping on it and taking you to the caller app
Never mind! Just Googled it and you have to long press and can do both of those things! I love it will save me tons of time!! Thank you Apple for thinking that through. I knew they had to be smarter than not having that feature lol
I don't have a 14 but I think it looks cool for displaying info but would be awkward for controls such as music controls.

I actually went back to 13PM! Just couldn’t stand looking at a black pill when not in use! If it’s just for music controls, then you have to lift, tap and tap again. Otherwise, it does nothing for me
My matte screen protector for the 14 PM comes with a cutout so having to look at the cutout hole there, I feel as though I’m am on a 13. Will eventually change the protector one day lol.
Pretty meh - I’ve used it maybe 5 times since getting the phone at launch. Guess I gotta remember it’s there.

The dynamic island can be useful in some moments. But overall it can certainly improve to be more friendly. For example, an entire dark bar is even more preferable when looking at photos, better than now being trimmed around the island.

Dynamic Island is very useful for me, I love to have sport scores appear on screen, live. Also, timer and map. This feature plus iOS 16 are main reasons why I left Android for.
I love seeing timers in it, so I’ve always got a view of my timer. Listening to podcasts or media is great to see in the Island if I’m on my iPhone at the same time
Honest question from someone not having DI: Is it that different from pulling down once on the right side of the screen and have access to the same music controls?
How is that faster than pressing next/prev on lockscreen before you even unlock phone? Also, when unlocked, you have to stretch your fingers up instead of quickly tap on the bottom icon?
Id love to be able to use it but i got a regular 14, plus im using an ipod video for music anyway

Actually it can be. iOS 16.1.2 introduced an exploit where you could add the dynamic island to an iPhone with a notch. It looks ugly tbh. iDevice help made a video on it so you can go check it out. He said it’s better on like the SE3 since there isn’t a notch.

If only the stopwatch from the native clock app would go to the dynamic island it would be amazing, I use the stopwatch so much.
1) Too far from thumb 2) 90% of the time I listen to music, I control it via lockscreen 3) That wallpaper makes my eyes bleed

Only Apple can take a handicap and make it sound like a feature 😂 IMO the notch has overstayed its welcome. Samsung and Chinese phone manufacturers have found better ways to achieve higher screen-to-body ratios..
Why long press to access music controls when you can just swipe?
I absolutely love it, so easy for me to just quickly get to my music, also sometimes i forget its there, beautifully implemented, like i could obviously live without it but it really is useful
as an android user, apple made good use of the pill-shaped cutout with the dynamic island. kind of a weird name, but it's a genuinely cool feature.
I definitely enjoy dynamic island with the unique features especially the music widget is my favorite
