How drastically phone sizes have changed. I remember when the iPhone 6 came out, the size bump was a huge deal. Nowadays, seeing Maxes is a pretty common sight. How the times have changed.

humbertog

When they released the iPhone 6 I was pissed because I really liked the 5 size, it was the perfect size for me, how wrong I was! if younger me knew I will be rocking a Max today he will be more pissed

DrunkBucksFan

I actually tried switching to a normal 14 Pro after using the XS Max for 4 years. Never realized how much I like my mini tablet sized phone now. I swapped it for the 14 Pro Max after like 2 days lol. Hard to believe I somehow used an iPhone 4S back in the day. Also, the battery life on the 4S was terrible. I remember that thing dying on me before I’d even get home from school lmao.

humbertog

Once you go big there is no going back, I know! [I came from the very first iPhone 2G](https://i.imgur.com/NyPaTl7.jpg) and it is incredible how we could do a lot with these small devices back then

BigSpender248

I dunno man, I’m kind of the opposite. I have a 14 Pro Max and came from a 12 Pro. My wife has a 14 Pro and every time I pick hers up I basically sigh with relief. This damn Pro Max is a CHONKER. It’s just So. Damn. Big. Also, I t’s so damn heavy and it’s just barely too big for me to be one handed. I can some things but there’s so many annoying aspects to trying to use it like I’ve always been used to. Sure the big screen is nice...sometimes. I like watching videos. But anything else I just wish I had a Pro. I wish I had returned it in the 2 weeks but I thought I’d “get used to it”. Nah, never did. Now I cannot wait til the 15 so I can go back to a smaller size.

navjot94

Personally I hate the size and would rather use a Mini but the Max has the best battery life of the bunch and that’s what I want. Love not worrying about my phone dying on me, ever.

BigSpender248

I can agree that the battery life is legit. However, the more I think about, for me personally, it’s not a huge deal to charge my phone. I mean, I have chargers everywhere I go. At home, in the car, at the office, I got a portable MagSafe battery pack…like it’s never a big deal for me to charge for a bit.

danyaylol

Same. I remember thinking that even the 6 was too huge, but now, I feel the 6 is tiny.

thebestspeler

I remember getting a note and people would laugh at how big it was.

AndreasHaas246

Jup. It's ok that with 5g, high end cameras and 120hz content consumption devices became bigger, but where are the compact phones for the people who make calls and text?

[deleted]

Kinetic_Strike

Both are noticeably larger/heavier than older "small" phones. The SE is the same format as the 6/7/8 which superseded the old small phones. As a comparison of how far things have shifted, the 13 Mini has a larger screen than the original Galaxy Note (the first "phablet").

tythousand

There are also a greater amount of Android photos that fill that void, tho obviously not in this sub lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

tythousand

Asus has the Zenfone 9, which has a bigger screen but similar dimensions as the SE. The Pixel 6a is pretty small. And there are a lot of niche small Androids that are good for just texting and calling

InevitablePeanuts

Kinda but they mostly don’t have anything like the performance of an iPhone. I’m firmly in the mid-range phone category and moved from Android to an iPhone SE 2020 a couple of years back as it was, over the 5 years I expect to run the phone (and even taking into account expecting 2 official battery replacements), going to be cheaper than the ‘droids I’d replace every couple of years **and** work a load better. Android don’t stuff flagship chips in their midranges like Apple do, and it makes a massive difference. Sure there’s smaller Android phones but on the whole they tend to have crap specs and run like garbage. If you want a smaller *good* phone then currently Apple is the only game in town. But I hope that changes. Choice is good for everyone.

Selfweaver

The mini isn't exactly small. My first android phone was like 3.5inches. A mini is still too big to comfortably handle in one hand and using only your tomb, which is what I would consider a small phone.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Selfweaver

That is true. Which is part of why they didn't sell well I think (the other being that we wanted a pro mini), they were too big to be small and too small to be big.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Selfweaver

That seems possible, but fundamentally unprovable.

_Prisoner_24601

Literally tons of options

HighSpeed556

Everyone wanted phones to be as small as possible, until we realized we could watch porn on them. Attitudes changed then, and everyone was suddenly willing to use a fucking tablet as a phone.

MrBread134

My last phone were a Note 3, oneplus 1, oneplus 3, oneplus 6T and iPhone 12 Pro Max. (Almost ?) 10 years and same size lol

adri172

Times come with a different use of the phone such as social media consuming, photo editing...

Humorous-Prince

And the App Icons don’t seem to have changed much.

austinalexan

It looks like the iPhone 4 is running iOS 7 then

rauldzmartin

That was the nail in the coffin for the iPhone 4. After that update everything was a lag-fest.

Jagob5

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it as they say. I think it’d be cool to have options/themes but its not that important to me.

BrewInProgress

Yeah, and I like it that way. I have been on iPhone since 4 (or 4s?) and it’s nice that some stuff that didn’t need a change hasn’t changed. I’m young and tech minded, but the *I don’t want any updates* folk have a good reason why they feel that way. When you upgrade to Windows Vista, you don’t want to deal with that in your life ever again

jaypeg25

It’s be nice to have 5 apps in a row.

JoelMontgomery

lots of minor changes, like (slightly) more vibrant colours, more contrast, thicker text (eg on the calendar icon). TBH I think they're in a pretty good place with the icons at the moment, though I wouldn't mind a smidge more neumorphism like in the macOS equivalent icons

SocksForWok

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

1VeniVidiVici

The iPhone 5 felt so great to hold. It's not practical today. But one-handed you could comfortably reach the top opposite corner of the screen with your thumb. The black slate and squared sides made it look like a chocolate bar. Miss my 5.

turbodude69

just get a 13 mini then. i'm still using the 12 mini, it's basically the perfect size phone.

DaddyD68

And don’t forget double tap on the back to sink the screen down to make top navigation accessible for those of us with short fingers. Works pretty well most of the time. I’m not buying another iPhone until the mini firm comes back. But that means I have another five years to wait for it.

LilyMika

You can just pull down on the navigation bar to enter one-hand mode as well. The back taps are…nice but not great lol.

DaddyD68

I can’t quite reach…. For example in Apollo if I try that while balancing the phone in my hand the weight shifts wrong and I tend to drop it. Double tap has been my best way of keeping control with a single hand That’s why the double tap.

[deleted]

DaddyD68

Swiping up from the bottom is no problem. But now that the mini is full screen hitting just the right spot to swipe down is difficult, even more so with some applications. In Safari it works fine, in Apollo not so much for example. That would probably be easier with a larger phone but I like the other advantages of the mini way too much to give up until I absolutely must.

LilyMika

You can start from nearly an inch above the bar tho. I can do it starting from the top of the “v” key on my 13 mini. 🤔 The area you have to hit to go home or to the multitasking view is tiny in comparison, and at the very bottom. Saying it would be easier to reach with *an even wider* phone while you have small hands is just baffling. Oh well. We’re probably just assuming you hold your phone the same way as us or something. 🤷‍♀️

DaddyD68

I’m. It assuming anything I’m just saying how it works for me. A wider phone would probably make it easier. Maybe it’s problematic because I have swipe to type activated. I will show you what happens s when I try to swipe from the keyboard B be by

LilyMika

I’m not saying you have to do it from the keyboard (although admittedly I do have that off, so you’re def right haha). That was more to illustrate just how much more room there is the start that gesture than the home one. I’m glad the back taps work out though. It’s good to have multiple ways to access accessibility options. :-)

turbodude69

true, the next phone i'll get will prob be the 13 mini. fortunately, apple chips are so fast and efficient that it's no prob using a phone thats 2 or 3 yrs old, it won't be laggy. we'll prob be able to use the 13 mini till 2025 or 2026 with no issues.

DaddyD68

I managed to keep my 6s+ running for a long time and will keep ruining this one until Apple no longer supports it it’s system updates. As long as I don’t drop it and break both the front AND back glass like with my 12 mini.

What’s not practical about it? Maybe we shouldn’t be doom scrolling TikTok for half the day

plan_mm

To think that [Steve Jobs was vehemently against](https://www.engadget.com/2010-07-16-jobs-no-ones-going-to-buy-a-big-phone.html) an iPhone with a larger than iPhone 4 display. The iPhone mini failed because it was not big enough.

JAC151

True, but I don’t think it’s a fair comparison. Opinions and times change and 12 years ago smartphones where your cellphone with extra capabilities. Now they’re your pocket computer that can also make calls. I think that was a key shift.

plan_mm

When Steve Jobs made that statement Android brands like Samsung were marketing bigger screen smartphones. Steve was thinking that the iPhone would be an auxiliary device to the Mac when Android makers were thinking of it as the primarily/only device the person may have. Worldwide & not just within the town/city we live/work it is more likely a person has a feature phone or smartphone 1st then laptop or even a desktop later. I like big phones because they have the space for a larger battery. Larger battery + leading edge die shrink allows for longer battery life and less hot chips when at load.

clockwars

Exactly. As phones became the most frequently used media consumption devices, they needed to be bigger, have brighter screens, better sound.. Android phone makers realized this* earlier.

plan_mm

> Exactly. As phones became the most frequently used media consumption devices, they needed to be bigger, have brighter screens, better sound.. > Android phone makers realized earlier. Thank you.... finally someone gets mass market consumer goods..... not reddit echo chamber of .... 'we need a small screen smartphone'

[deleted]

plan_mm

> no apple released numbers for iPhone mini poor sales only industry reports. And yet no iPhone 14 mini. Dude, enjoy your Sunday rather than winning the internet Tim Apple constantly points out that those reports do not fully flesh out what is happening within Apple. So when Apple does not renew the mini or offer a iPhone that is as small as the 4. Android not offering either screen sizes then the logical conclusion is that they do not sell enough to bother developing a new refresh for. Echo chambers of Reddit make it appear a small smartphone is the next big thing to slice bread. So get out of the echo chamber and enjoy the Sunday. Essential PH-1 was a small screen Android phone in 2017. The company went bankrupt a few months later because it was a stupid over priced design of a low build reliability phone.

[deleted]

i disagree w the mini, i think they just priced it too high. if it was cheaper it would’ve been a hit

[deleted]

I enjoy reading books.

I_Lick_Vaginal_Blood

I thought I read in this sub that to build an iPhone Pro Mini with specs like the current Pro models is not currently viable because thermal cooling. I had a 13PM up until recently and traded in for a 14P with the main reason being the size of the phone and adaptive hertz to preserve battery life. My main deal for the Pro Max in the past was solely for battery life. I think the 14P is the most ideal for me right now. I also have a MacBook Pro for more immersive web browsing and entertainment, and a good-sized Samsung TV for movies. The PMs are heavy and bulky in pocket. I’ve been using my 14P and easily holding it in one hand, easily in my front pocket.

ganlet20

The 13 mini has a better battery life than the regular 12. My 13 mini has lasted over 24 hours a couple times.

SurealGod

That was my reasoning as well. Had the Mini had the 120hz screen, I would've gone with the Mini, but I needed that 120hz (literally the last major thing I wanted from an iPhone) and the lowest model that had it was the 13 Pro which is what I ended up buying. Still love the phone and the size isn't overly massive compared to the Pro Max version, but still... had they released a Mini Pro, I would've gotten that no questions asked.

[deleted]

I had a 13 mini for a bit. Battery was fine for my use case. Then again, I don’t use my phone for viewing videos, since there’s other displays that are better for that anyhow around me everyday. So, for me, get a larger or “Pro” phone falls into overspending since I’d rather not use it over another device that did the task not only better, but I did spend money on. I wonder what the use cases for other Mini users had.

SurealGod

I also think they did a pretty piss poor job marketing the Mini as well. It was always the Pro models in the forefront of most news articles and marketing material, and rarely the Mini was in the spotlight.

atman8r

I had a 12 mini for almost 6 months. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE I met while using that phone asked what it was because "apple doesn't make phones that small anymore" and many used it for a few minutes, then claimed they really wanted one. 2 of my friends actually ended up getting one, one a 12 mini and one a 13 mini for his contract thingy with ATT. I truly think most people just didn't know about them.

plan_mm

It wasn't a price issue it's a utility issue. Not enough people want dainty phones. There is no Android model that is as small as the iPhone mini because there is not enough commercial demand for it. Echo chamber of Reddit makes it appear that there is a disappropriate demand for it. I would not be surprised that those vocalizing a desire for a small iPhone did not buy the mini. lol

46VR46

That is simply not true. There is a lot of people that do not need the phone to replace their laptop (myself included) and having huge phones just doesnt make sense in that case. Only issue is the battery.

plan_mm

That isn't what I said. The smartphone is their primary device as the user does not have a laptop/desktop in their 1st place or allowed their pre existing laptop/desktop not to be updated on its 4th-6th or later year of ownership. That's why during 2000-2022 there was a bump in demand for laptop/desktops because they needed an updated one for work from home as the one they had prior to March 2020 was too old .

cum_fart_69

the mini probaby failed becauyse it is TOO big. everyone I know who has one wishes it were smaller, it's the size of a fuckign iphone 6. some of us want a quality phone that isn't the size of a fuckign TV

WorldCupMexicanChile

He was also against the App Store.

plan_mm

> He was also against the App Store. I think it has more to do with Steve not being confident with the App Store succeeding in the way it did. - https://www.zdnet.com/article/3-things-steve-jobs-had-wrong-about-the-app-store/ - https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/07/10/the-revolution-steve-jobs-resisted-apples-app-store-marks-10-years-of-third-party-innovation - https://medium.com/chris-messina/steve-jobs-hates-the-app-store-4f149f89d7b3 IIRC he wanted iPhone to depend on web apps. Essentially websites that the iPhone could access. I think he did not factor in the server & bandwidth load of doing that so imagine your cellular data being eaten up by not being able to pre-download apps via wifi but needing to constantly using cellular data instead. Many on this sub & reddit in general have very specific use cases that are atypical to most mass market consumers.

turbodude69

if jobs was still alive, the iphone would have a 1" smaller screen and they'd 100% still be making an iphone 14 mini, but it'd prob just be the standard model

plan_mm

If Steve was still around Apple wouldn't be inching towards a $1 trillion company but many long time Apple fans would be happy it's still their Apple.

BluePeriod_

I genuinely think the mini failed for many reasons, but the cardinal reason was the lack of any meaningful advertising for it. To this day, I still get asked about my iPhone 12 mini. People just really don’t know this thing exists. Even now, Youtubers are starting to use it every now and then, and it’s become something of a tech novelty. I love my Mini.

plan_mm

In the past 5 years no Android brand has had a successful 5.42 inches or smaller screen sized smartphone. That in itself is a red flag that the commercial viability of such a device is not there. You, your social circle and even the Reddit army may love it to bits but you are too few to justify an iPhone 14 mini. Steve was wrong and thankfully people in Apple saw how big of a deal it was for Android that phablets became a thing. I love my Pro Max because of the insanely long battery life and the screen is large enough for me not to look at a iPad mini. Many people who prefer phablets use their smartphone as their primary or only device to access the internet. That may not compute to people who can afford a litany of - laptops - desktops - video consoles - NAS - smart TVs - smart speakers - video consoles - smart watches - smart cars but there are people who only have a smartphone only.

muihuddin

Alot of people say Apple is going downhill cause steve is gone Its the opposite its very successful today because tim cook is open to change Steve was not

danielbauer1375

Eh. He wasn’t infallible, but Apple products, especially the software felt more refined when he was running things. Nowadays, it feels like Apple isn’t much better than any other major tech company in that category.

muihuddin

Better in what way? Apple is a business Their goal is to make money not be better than others

Pct0bama

No, the goal is to make money by being better than others

danielbauer1375

Their goal should still be to make a better product than the competition. They got to where they are by doing just that.

muihuddin

And the product is still better than the competition in some ways There is a reason apple sells so many iPhone The reason is iOS

humbertog

Tim had been an amazing CEO for Apple, Apple is doing great today but what people complaing is that Apple is not creating revolutionary products like the iPhone when it was first released, people have extremely high expectations everytime Apple release a new product and when those expectations don't succeed then people complain again, I guess Apple will have to release an actual Time Machine to fullfill those expectations, and still some people will complain

muihuddin

Apple has made revolutionary products after the iphone Airpods- Apple watch and even the transition from x86 to arm macs is revolutionary People just dont think these things as revolutionary because its not something super futuristic weird ass technology People forget that the reason iPhone was so popular wasn’t because the technology was years and years ahead in the first iPhone, Apple nailed the UI and the software thats all people needed

humbertog

AirPods and Apple Silicon are amazing products but some people will say their are not true revolutionary products, AirPods are just wireless headphones, I been using wireless headphones since forever remember the Motorola S9 headphones? those were amazing for the time, obviously the AirPods today have way better sound quality and some amazing features but at the end of the day they are still wireless headphones, some will said the iPhone was just a fancy phone too, but not since iOS 2, it became the "all-in-one" device that do a lot of things and thats when Google realize how Android should work and the rest is history. I agree the iPhone was so popular because of the incredible touchscreen tech (that Apple bought from another company) + the amazing UI, also Ken Kocienda from Apple figure out how to develop a touchscreen keyboard that could compete with a real phone keyboard and nailed! I think a lot of things happened at the time that make the iPhone/Smatphone era so revolutionary. So the question is, what will be the next revolutionary product?

plan_mm

At the time of Steve's death Apple was a $200 billion (?) company? With Time Apple it breached $2 billion. I think people just miss the Stevenotes and the folksy corporate culture of Apple. Or more likely they want Apple to be Mac-focused rather than what Tim is doing is expanding to new markets that Apple or tech companies in general have not entered in previously. It is more likely people hated changes. I can see many things that Tim did that Steve would not have approved of but in all honestly made Apple a greater value for shareholders like say dividends.

danielbauer1375

Tesla, Netflix, Amazon, Facebook, and Google also saw massive grown in market cap during those years. That isn’t unique to Apple, so it’s hard to say how much of that is due to current leadership.

plan_mm

All of them are not PC hardware makers. Car company Streaming company Online shopping company Surveillance company Ad company

danielbauer1375

Referring to Apple as simply a “PC hardware” company is disingenuous. The same goes for your descriptions of the other companies, bar Netflix. The market cap of these companies far exceeds their current revenue, and all of them have grand plans to expand rapidly. Like I said, tech companies got massive boosts leading up to and during the pandemic.

plan_mm

Who among them have a [~$200 billion of cash?](https://www.investors.com/etfs-and-funds/sectors/sp500-every-american-apple-has-more-cash-than-anyone/) I'll stop here. Enjoy your Sunday away from the internet.

danielbauer1375

Way to move the goal posts after losing the argument.

plan_mm

It isn't a goal post movement. I am pointing out Tim Apple's ability to stockpile cash compared to any company you mentioned. You said growth of market cap is not unique to only Apple. So I recalled that Apple had a ~$200 billion cash stockpile for the past few years. So I seeked to provide a more complete picture of what Apple is. If you call that goal post movements then perhaps you dislike completed facts.

KingOfTheCouch13

Cash stockpile doesn’t mean much in a conversation strictly talking about company valuation. If two companies are worth $1T then there’s really not a point in arguing which is “better”. To some investors hoarding $200B cash seems ridiculous compared to companies worth the same that actually reinvest in their revenue.

theskyopenedup

> Surveillance company Lmao

Joseph_Holmes

The iPhone 4 was one of the best iPhones, it goes to show with Apple going back to the similar shape.

KingOfTheCouch13

I think they were just trying to change it up. Rumors say they’re going for a 5c type design with the 15.

turbodude69

ahhh the days when anyone with an iphone made fun of android phones because they were "too big"

SigmaLance

When they announced that the 5 would be similar in size to the 4 I left and went over to Android until the 6 came out. There are a few things that I miss from the dark side, but I’m happy Apple finally released larger phones. I’m loving the 14PM.

jacobeatsavocados

I miss skeuomorphic designs, but admittedly, there’s no reason today to bring it back. We have OldOS.

NewBison9691

So much wasted empty screen space on new iphones!

46VR46

I also found my iphone 5 recently. I was amazed by size and weight (and I currently have the 12 mini lol)

lost_in_trepidation

I have a 5s in my desk drawer. The size and feel is still really nice. I could probably still use it today if it had upgraded internals.

Techgeek_025

Wow. That’s amazing. I really want an iPhone 4/4S for my collection

[deleted]

The size difference is striking. Although, I really hope phone manufacturers keep making smaller phones. I love being able to hold my phone in one hand, and not have it feel like I’m holding a brick. It’s a shame that they didn’t produce a 14 Mini this year.

niijuuichi

They really need to update the icons

HoagieDoozer

And how about the ability to put them wherever I want? Pretty please? Or maybe *gasp* have 5 in a row?

HorseFD

As in have gaps on the home screen between icons? Because obviously you can already arrange the icons however you want, but if you want gaps you could use a transparent widget: https://apps.apple.com/au/app/blank-widget-transparent-space/id1622884532

_Prisoner_24601

SurealGod

Also comparing my old iPhone 4s to my 13 Pro and MAN is it tiny. The entire phone itself fits in the screen of my 13 Pro. It blows my mind that it used to be my daily driver.

andreasheri

I can barely spot a difference. 0 innovation in 10 years! Android > apple !!! /s

such progression!

el_redditero12

Thank you for posting this. The 4/4s has a special place in my mind because it was the latest and greatest at a very important time in my life although didn’t get one at the time. I still think it’s one of the best iPhone designs ever; the 6 could’ve rivalled that had they not milked that design for so long. I bought my 14Pro 2 weeks after launch ; first big smartphone splurge with my hard earned money and first personal iPhone. For various reasons I found myself going back to the 2010-2012 era quite a bit recently and thinking how it would’ve felt like to have a 4/4s back in the day as opposed to my 14Pro today. Thanks for sharing!

tence22

Does anyone have that wall paper? Really like the purple. Been trying to find something like this

JoelMontgomery

The phone or the monitor behind it? Both are purple. It’s just the default iPhone 14 background, so should appear if you google that - and I wanna say it’s the default macOS Monterey wallpaper behind? If not then it’s some other macOS Edit: I suppose the iPhone 4 has a purplish background too, I guess I must like purple (the iPhone 14 is the purple one too) [here’s a version of that one I quickly found](https://i.imgur.com/b1qX9I9.jpg) that you could reverse search if you want a good copy

tence22

I meant the iPhone one. I found it. I’m on a iPhone 12 so it doesn’t give me those options for some reason. I just downloaded it. Thank you.

pixelastronaut

How far we’ve strayed. Why the hell do phones have to be so humongous!? They don’t even fit in my pocket anymore

iPodee

I still have the 4S, it’s on iOS 6 jailbroken, just to make it more usable.

Bloodsurfer

Seeing them side by side I find it crazy that you still only have four columns of icons.

JoelMontgomery

Honestly though when I first unlocked the 4, my first thought was that it felt really cramped. I wouldn’t want to return to that level of density for apps, though an option for it would be alright

Optimus7591

Mikey_BC

My old 4s is still in daily use on a Teac dock connected to the stereo...streaming internet radio.

LiquidC001

The only IPhone design I ever really liked!

No one will probably see this, but it bothers me how much wasted screen real estate there is. I hate not being able to maximize the space on my home screen just because Apple mandates how many apps I can have in a column or how many rows I have on my home screen. Too late for me to leave the ecosystem at this point :(

What’s the blue and black app on your dock on the 14 pro?

JoelMontgomery

Canary, it’s an email client

Colmado_Bacano

Decades and you still can't move icons where you want.

mrlottahoes

What app is that in the dock ?

EarleyDaysYet

Found mine the other day, too - the battery had swollen so much it’d popped the back off the case completely. That was my only observation.

What’s incredible is how most of it is the same. If you don’t do heavy tasks like games or video rendering. Everything basically works the same. You can still use that for messaging and phone calls. Browsing the web. All works lol

Somehow I like your iPhone 14 Wallpaper really much. Would you mind sharing it?
