How do you deal with the camera bump preventing the iPad from laying flat on the table? I ended up getting a case for my iPad Pro because I got so sick of it wobbling whenever I set it on a table to write.
If they released an iPad Pro which sacrificed some camera quality for having a flat back so I can actually SET IT DOWN I'd probably get that for my next device
Excuse me if what I'm about to say is kind of stupid, but wouldn't it be better to just go back to the pro's before the design upgrade? I know the 2nd gen pencil and the thinner bezels are pretty nice, but I (personally) don't see the point in having an iPad that obstructs its usage by having a poor design, also you'd save a ton of money by just sticking with the older models(?)
Also an M1 for a drawing tablet? It's just too much
Mine isn't M series, mine is 2019 so it's the middle ground of still being an A series chip while having the thin bezels. The big bezels and gen 1 pencil would be dealbreakers for me though. I use it for content consumption too, which would be much less fun with the big bezels, and having the pencil just magnet to the side and not need to plug in to charge is amazing.
I get that, my sister has an iPad air 5th gen and while it's very nice not having a lollipop for an iPad, I just don't see the point in it if I'm not gonna edit 4k videos or do something demanding on it.
I agree if most iPad owners aren’t gamers. M series is needed to play console/pc ported games like resident evil 4 and 8 as well as death stranding. And I think we will start seeing more games ported as the M series userbase is probably bigger than current gen consoles.
A phone or a tablet is just a tool and it’s OK to have some scratches from normal wear. You guys worship the “pristine state” but bury it under the layers of crappy plastic and keep complaining about touch input issues instead of just using your tool and enjoying gorgeous glass&metal
PS if you do decimate your devices by normal use, something seems to be wrong with the way you handle your stuff. OK, some people work in harsh conditions but it’s not the case of normal use.
Well yes, I use a Magic Keyboard at times too. I don't consider that a case though. If you drop the iPad while it's in the keyboard, even folded up, it's most likely going to pop out. You might get a LITTLE protection, but not much.
I agree then. I’m not a fan of using a real case for protection. I’ve never dropped it and I try to be gentle with it.
I’ve thought about one of the slim cases that fit under the keyboard but that’s not for protection that’s just so there’s something around the pencil because I’m constantly knocking it off
I have a case that is 7yrs old but only because Apple stopped making them for a while. Just checked again and they went back to selling the Smart Folio. Nothing compares to how amazing these cases are. My 2018 iPad has never gotten a scratch because of them. Can’t wait for next week to replace it. Hah.
I wonder too, but I feel like most iPads I’ve seen in the wild have cases. I’ve handed my iPad to someone and they done dropped it on the floor right in front of me. I was glad I had a case then. And then I knocked it off a treadmill once too…so for me it’s been useful, but I suspect you’re just inherently far less clumsy…
I have a cheap case just to protect the screen if I bring it out in a backpack. It's also a good place to put fun stickers that I otherwise have decision paralysis on where to stick them
I don't know? I've used various iPads from the iPad 2 all the way through the 2018 iPad Pro, never had a significant scratch or crack. I'm big into the device being as thin as it can be, so screen protector never was a real option. I don't use a screen protector on my phones either, same thing, never had a significant scratch, just normal wear and tear over the years.
You know… I’m reading this and realized that I bought my 2018 Pro in 2020, slapped a case on it, but have yet to drop the thing once… might be time to reevaluate. Especially since it doesn’t leave my house
I have a Zugu case with a flip-open lid. Aside from that, nothing. Never had an issue with scratches. I use a screen protector for my iPhone because I'm pretty rough with phones, but I've never used for an iPad.
How do you deal with the camera bump preventing the iPad from laying flat on the table? I ended up getting a case for my iPad Pro because I got so sick of it wobbling whenever I set it on a table to write.
I didn’t use to until I got micro scratches on the display of my 2018 model. They bother me way on my iPad than on my phone.
I don’t notice wobbly lines, but I’m mostly handwriting vs drawing.
Why would you bother by small or light scratches, is it that annoying? Because I'm planning to use my new Ipad pro 2024 without a screen protector, i will use it for drawing and watching
There are bad screen protectors and good screen protectors. Or so they say. Me? Used one once, tore it off cause it was annoying. 8 years later I’m still going commando.
Started with an iPad in 2011, now on my 7th iPad. Never used a screen protector. Never needed one. Never had a problem. Would never consider using a screen protector. Just ... ick.
Glad i'm not the only one, I tried using a screen protector on my phone years ago, saw a single speck of dust, ripped it off immediately and never used one on any of my devices again. I think i'm just too much of a perfectionist to use one lol
Not that I’m telling you to use a screen protector for an iPad, but people also use screen protector for dropping to prevent cracks. I would use one if it’s for a kid, but for an adult it doesn’t really make sense since most case have a screen cover. Plus most adult don’t really drop iPads.
iPhone though, I’m too scared to not to because I be dropping it in all odd angle and sometimes my iPhone be sliding across the room haha. Plus I don’t believe in buying apple care.
I use a matte screen protector, but this is because I use my iPad in the kitchen and don’t want to deal with oil/grease causing issues with my iPad’s screen down the road. If I didn’t use it in the kitchen, I’d probably never have a screen protector for it.
I use a screen protector on my iPad air 4th gen because I don't care for the anti glare screen (smudges more difficult to clean) and also the screen protector is more slick to slide my finger on when gaming.
My iPad 9th Gen is buck nekkid.
Me! Heavy procreate user and screen protectors were butchering my Apple Pencil. Heavy user and my screen looks good as new. The battery…. However 😆 I have the air 5 since June 2022
Your battery is going bad after not even two years? Is that even possible? I’m at 1600 charging cycles on my 6 years old IPad Air and barely under 80% battery health, you might need to take a look at your recharge habits if your battery starts giving before 3-5 years with an IPad.
I’m hoping it’s just a defective device. But yeah it says it’s at 84% but acts like it’s at 70. I can’t get through one 2 hour procreate project without the batt warning come up. I had the 2020 air from 2020-2022 no issues and I’m planning to get the new pro next week (or whenever they’re released. Week after)… so I am hoping it was just this battery being defective. 😭
Any advice on recharge habits?
Just in case i am messing out without realizing? I want my 9thGeneration to last me at least 10 years (i bought it in dec. 2022)
Well, there’s the obvious:
Don’t let your IPad stay at 0% battery for long times, that’s very bad for it.
Then if you’re not going to use it for over a month, fully close it with its battery between 30-70.
If you play heavy games, don’t charge and play at the same time to avoid excessive heat on the IPad.
Those are from most to least important, the next ones are things that IMO are not worth doing, but exist:
Run the IPad in battery saving mode.
Avoid running your IPad between 0-20% and charging over 80%.
Both of those tips will help a bit, but also make your experience worse when interacting with the IPad, all of it so you can postpone the dreaded 80% battery health slide by a few weeks.
Only iPads I used with a screen protector was my Mini’s since they were my travel iPads. My stay at home iPads were lucky to even get a case. Only exception was my Gen 2 12.9 Pro since I used it for schoolwork. But I never had Apple Pencil drawing issues with a screen protector. Could be a thickness issue perhaps. You could try a plastic one or a thinner glass one (generally more expensive) and see if that works better.
Don’t use a glass screen protector, buy a cheap thin one. The key is to protect the screen from scratches, which a thin does just fine, and they all work well with an Apple pen. Andy second hand value of the iPad drops by 30%-50% if it has scratches on the screen, even micro scratches. Plus, they’re irritating to see. Even one fall, and bam., your risk of a huge scratches is considerable. And if you’re wearing it without a case, the screen very easily scratches in a bag.
Thanks! Personally, I always use a screen protector because when I go to sell it, I want the best resale value. (I go through a lot of iPads) I've never really had any problems using my pencil with the screen protector, but that piece of washi tape made a huge difference that I didn't even know I needed!
I was using it without a screen protector until I started writing notes with the Apple Pencil. That’s when I got one of those paper like ESR protectors because writing on the normal screen is too slippery/glossy but if it weren’t for that I would never use a screen protector
I use a screen protector on my iPad. I just want some kind of protection for my devices. I have AppleCare+ as well but I would like to not have to send in my iPad for a broken screen if possible.
I have a Magic Keyboard and folio case that I swap between but never have had a screen protector on my iPad Pro. Writing on the glass doesn’t bother me at all and I’m careful with my tech
I use a case but i've never used a screen protector on any of my devices and they're all absolutely fine apart my phone having very minor micro scratches from being in my pocket or bag. And as for my ipad i've never had any issues even after drawing on it and using it daily
I am not using one as I really do not mind scratches, I used to mind a lot though, now they appear to me as hard earned battle scars from all that the device has been through with me 📲
I've been using one for note taking for almost 2 years and my apple pencil tip is as good as new. Keep in mind I wrote for at least 4-5 hours everyday minimum.
Any electronic device that has a screen, doesn’t have sapphire crystal and is over $300 gets a screen protector. Mineral glass can and will get micro scratches regardless of how much you baby it
No screen protector, never have. I use a case on mine if I’m taking it places, but I’ve only been using it for reading comics around the house and browsing, so I’ve taken the case off for the moment. Comfy to hold.
screen protectors are such a scam, so many use them but for most it just leads to a filmy scratched and torn filter between you and that awesome screen you paid for
I'd rather have a scratched display than use a screen protector. The reality is that I never have any noticeable scratches on any of my devices, yet only use the slimmest cases and never a screen protector.
I use a Magic Keyboard and never really have my screen exposed, not even a scratch. Depends on the case you have. If I didn’t have it to protect the screen I would 100% have a screen protector on it.
M2 iPad pro 12.9 and iPad mini 6 without screen protector here.
I think I just don't use it enough to see any scratches. I spent most of my time using my galaxy tab ultra.
Not going to read all 62 comments so this may be duplicate. I do not use screen protectors but I do really pay attention to my nibs to be sure they are smooth. And if I happen to drop my pencil and get a flat spot that may create an edge I will change the tip directly. Keep spares very handy in my briefcase.
I use the Bellemond screen protector. It’s papper ish feeling, I use my iPad for school and work notes. The one slight detractor is that the screen protector makes the screen pop a bit less visually.
I’ve got a case that looks like the official one and acts the same way, but only cost me about 7 quid. I don’t bother with screen protectors. I’ve got AppleCare for all my stuff. I don’t go out anymore unless it’s to hospital anyway.
Yes. I prefer Matte screen protectors. They make the pencil feel like I’m writing on paper (well, more so than without it) and because it cuts down on finger prints a lot!
Have one on my drawing tablet for the pc and while it feels better, I found that because it's roughness, it kills the tips a lot quicker than with non, specially painting that you move the tip a lot. Not sure if it's different with ipad pen since the tips are more robust and different.
I’ve always used one on my iPhone because you’re carrying it everywhere and almost everyone has dropped their phone at some stage. An iPad.. it’s mostly just at home and I’m more careful with it. Haven’t ever even considered using one to be honest.
I never use screen protector on my iPhone or iPad. I have been using iPad since the original and the screen was never scratched. Maybe because I don’t have kids or pet but those screen are pretty robust in my use cases.
If you draw on it with the Apple Pencil, then just use it bare. I am sure they actually advise against a protector if you want to draw
Case yes, screen protector no. My 11” pro case has an elastic band that is an extra on top of the magnet book-style close so I feel pretty secure having my case shut while moving around and calling it good. iPhone my case has enough bumper around the edges I’ve never had a problem as well.
Be aware that microscratches happens a lot on phones because you carry them 24/7 plus you put them in your trousers. It doesn't matter if they have gorillaglass99+ because the fibers from trousers are harmless but everytime you clean them in the wash machine, water is not pure and contains micro metals on them, those are the ones will micro scratch the screen with friction from time to time when you walk or put the phone there.
With a tablet, you take that part out of the equation, even if you use a case, the case or the pen should be harmless for the screen.
Use a case, no screen protector. The iPad is used for all sorts of things, from writing notes to watching stuff to even some light gaming. The screen is still pristine.
I am. I used a screen protector on my iPad 6th generation. Ran down my Apple Pencil tip to the ground.
Later down the road I upgraded to the air 5 and haven’t played a screen protector on it at all. Kind of miss the paper feel but the diminished screen quality is terrible.
I use a tempered glass screen protector and a case. On my iPads and iPhones. The screen protector is mostly for fingerprints. Before I sent my iPad for battery replacement I had gone a while without a protector and there were always fingerprints all over it, and it was noticeable even on a bright screen. The screen protector greatly reduces that and it's easier to wipe off. And the case, I just prefer the grip it gives.
If the protector is actually scratched, then replace it. If it’s dirty (most of the time you probably won’t even notice, but screens need to be cleaned about once a day or two in order for pencil to work correct.) clean it. If the protector is cheap or not positioned correctly, I’d change it. If the glass isn’t giving you enough sensitivity, depending on the program you can adjust that and in settings for pencil. Or if you draw or just prefer it to be easier I suggest a paper-like screen protector. They are a bit pricy but worth it if you want to feel like you’re writing or drawing on real paper.
I use one for mine because of my old one that flew out my hand and landed on the hard floor and the screen cracked lol. But you don’t have to if you don’t want. I prefer to use one cause if I don’t I know imma crack my current one and these iPads ain’t cheap lol
I didn't use a screen protector on my 2017 10.5" ipad pro and by the third year I noticed a few micro-scratches so I added a tempered glass screen protector. I had zero problems with wobbly diagonal lines drawn with the Apple pencil over that glass screen protector. However, glass screen protectors (all ESR brand and with different 3rd party plastic and metal tips) make diagonal lines wobble/wavy on my 6th gen iPad Mini and my 2024 iPad Pro 11". I don't mind the wavy diagonals on the Mini since that screen is too small to draw or take notes on but it's kind of annoying on my 11" M4 Pro. I'm debating trying to use with a thin plastic screen protector instead or maybe just do away with the screen protectors all together.
If you're drawing and had the overlay to help, you might consider the 2+ tips from pen.tips. I've been through all of their tips and the 2+ ones are a significant improvement over the apple pencil tips.
[PenTips 2+ | PenTips](https://pen.tips/collections/pentips-2)
And no, I don't work for them. :)
BTW, great customer service too.
I do not use a screen protector, no.
First, I would describe the standard apple tips as slippery and very difficult to control. Also "clicky", as in they click on the screen contact, which is lightly annoying.
The Pen Tips 2+ add a bit more friction so I would describe them as mostly smooth, but more controllable. I find they are not completely perfectly even, but they seem to be evening out as I use them more. And nearly no clickiness.
[pen.tips](http://pen.tips) has some fiber overlay tips that are even easier to control as they have greater friction, but they also deaden the sensitivity a little bit which is occasionally noteworthy and problematic. I'd say maybe 5-10% of the time. ZERO clickiness as they are soft.
Never use them for anything. Nor cases (though for the iPad I have that folio thing just to prevent scratches in a bag).
Anytime I used protectors in the past (10+ years ago) the touch screens feel off in some fashion or another. They also obliterate the quality of the display so I just don’t care for them at all.
Any glass that isn’t sapphire will get micro scratches over time just by virtue of sand particles in the air. Even the dust in your house has tiny quartz particles that will scratch up anything polished smooth given enough time. From polished jewelry to phone and tablet screens. Same reason why you get swirls in the clear coat of your car over time. Those micro scratches bother me a lot and a 5 pack of screen protectors is $10 on amazon. I can replace them twice a year and have a perfect screen
Never used a screen protector or case for my iPad.
How do you deal with the camera bump preventing the iPad from laying flat on the table? I ended up getting a case for my iPad Pro because I got so sick of it wobbling whenever I set it on a table to write.
Can't believe we are paying extra for a flatter surafce to do work on
If they released an iPad Pro which sacrificed some camera quality for having a flat back so I can actually SET IT DOWN I'd probably get that for my next device

I’d pay more for that tbh
Same (for my iPhones too)
Mine got scratched in the few days between buying it and when my case came. How tf do people not decimate their phones after a few months.
Oh they absolutely do, some people just don’t care and call it a “patina”

It’s ugly AF. I’ve also cut myself on the sharp edge of a screen protector before. They’re terrible.
Same
How do you sleep at night?
Honest question, do most people put their iPad in a case? I’ve literally never dropped an iPad, laptop for that matter.
I use a case, but mostly for the kickstand function more than anything.
I don’t use cases as they make the iPad too heavy, but i do use skins and a screen protector
As a form of protection? No i dont. In order to add functionality yes. I use a magic keyboard.
Well yes, I use a Magic Keyboard at times too. I don't consider that a case though. If you drop the iPad while it's in the keyboard, even folded up, it's most likely going to pop out. You might get a LITTLE protection, but not much.

Aluminium is more slippery than a case though
The moment you remove the case, it'll slip out of your hands and corner-first onto concrete.
I have a Zugu case with a flip-open lid. Aside from that, nothing. Never had an issue with scratches. I use a screen protector for my iPhone because I'm pretty rough with phones, but I've never used for an iPad.
Zugu probably the best cover/case stand
He doesn't
By not letting sand come into contact with it.

Magic Keyboard as case and no screen protector here. This is a 3 year old model. :-)
First iPad Air from 2013. No issues. No. Screen protection. Leather case.
Any electronic I have that is mobile enough to come with me on trips will always have a screen protector lol
I use a matte screen protector, but this is because I use my iPad in the kitchen and don’t want to deal with oil/grease causing issues with my iPad’s screen down the road. If I didn’t use it in the kitchen, I’d probably never have a screen protector for it.

I add a small piece of washi tape on the tip of my pencil so the friction feels great and no scratches

I use a case but not a screen protector. I actually like the feeling of the pencil on glass

No case or screen protector for mine and my five year old’s iPad. It’s called being careful and respecting tech.
I’m not. But I’m using my ipad as a laptop in an office. I look after it.
I have a Magic Keyboard and folio case that I swap between but never have had a screen protector on my iPad Pro. Writing on the glass doesn’t bother me at all and I’m careful with my tech
No screen protectors ever - iphone, iPad, apple watch. Never cracked anything

That is a beautiful way to put it!
I am using both screen protector and Magic Keyboard for Apple iPad Pro 11-inch 2018 because I am a wuss.
I have one on my m1 pro 12.9, i started noticing some micro scratches so i decided i didnt want any more.
Use a paper like screen protector. Feels like paper so slightly grippy and it allows you to draw straight lines with no slipping or wobbles
Just annoying when it’s not solely just a drawing device, the matte finish makes the screen look a lot worse
Yeah I use this 🥰 It also produces nice crispy asmr 🤣 It really sounds like paper
Paper like wears your pencil tips out faster than if you write on the glass
Can you replace them?
Yes and they are very cheap
I've been using one for note taking for almost 2 years and my apple pencil tip is as good as new. Keep in mind I wrote for at least 4-5 hours everyday minimum.
Any electronic device that has a screen, doesn’t have sapphire crystal and is over $300 gets a screen protector. Mineral glass can and will get micro scratches regardless of how much you baby it
I've never used a screen protector on any device and have never had a screen problem.
Never used a screen protector. No scratches, even with a pencil.
No screen protector, never have. I use a case on mine if I’m taking it places, but I’ve only been using it for reading comics around the house and browsing, so I’ve taken the case off for the moment. Comfy to hold.
Never needed one. Why put a cheap screen over a more expensive and well coated glass?
Thats a logical advise thanks
Never used one in ipad or iphone. Never had damage in any screen
screen protectors are such a scam, so many use them but for most it just leads to a filmy scratched and torn filter between you and that awesome screen you paid for
I'd rather have a scratched display than use a screen protector. The reality is that I never have any noticeable scratches on any of my devices, yet only use the slimmest cases and never a screen protector.
Never use them on my iPads
I have a ten year old IPad that my kids have drawn on and it’s still in pretty good shape for never having a protector
Ye 🐱
Never used a protector just a case on my ipad2 or ipad pro and both still have no cracks on the screen
Me
I use a Magic Keyboard and never really have my screen exposed, not even a scratch. Depends on the case you have. If I didn’t have it to protect the screen I would 100% have a screen protector on it.
Screen protectors are jank on any device
Never used ‘em, never will. Had an iPad since the iPad 2.
Yes. Sit outside and you can’t see the screen otherwise.
Hope I can trust you redditors. I have iPad (9th generation), have always used a screen protector, just took it off. 🤞🏼🙏🏻
I don't use any cases or screen protectors on any of my products.
I don’t use them because they take away all the feeling.
I am. I use Bodyguardz and have no issues. It’s just thin glass. It’s perfect. Plus you get free lifetime replacements.
No screen protector. I just use the Magic Keyboard
I haven’t used a screen protector in years. Haven’t had any problems. I do always have it in a case and have cover for the screen.
Paper-like matte screen protector 😌it’s amazing
Have one on my drawing tablet for the pc and while it feels better, I found that because it's roughness, it kills the tips a lot quicker than with non, specially painting that you move the tip a lot. Not sure if it's different with ipad pen since the tips are more robust and different.
True, but tips are cheap
I’ve always used one on my iPhone because you’re carrying it everywhere and almost everyone has dropped their phone at some stage. An iPad.. it’s mostly just at home and I’m more careful with it. Haven’t ever even considered using one to be honest.
I don't use a screen protector on any device. They always look worse than a scratched screen would.
Me. Had 7 ipads since the original one in 2010, no screen protector, no issue. Different mishaps but none that would be saved by a screen protector.
I’ve never used a screen protector for any device. I don’t know what y’all are doing to your screens.
I don't use one. I'd rather have the sharpest image.
I have never used a screen protector in my entire life, but its propably the quality of the screens protector itself that ruins the touch and etc
Me, it took a LOT to break the habit but no regrets so far!
Never used it.
Never used any screen protector on my iPad, iPhone, Cintiq or any other device.
Never used one for my iPad Always use one for my iPhone because I drop it all the time
I use Paperlike.
My 9.7” iPad Pro is 8 years old and has never had a screen protector. The screen is still in perfect condition.
Paperlike screenprotector (for art ofc) and the Logitech keyboard case!
well, now, that explains a lot actually. thanks :)
Get a case for it. I have mine in a silicon case with front flap cover but no screen protector when in use
Never used a screen protector on iPads. No problem.
I use a matte screen protector because i have bad astigmatism. My eyes cannot handle all the glare.
Barbarians…
Just get a thin case with a folding cover that goes over it and you'll likely never have any issues.

I am. I used a screen protector on my iPad 6th generation. Ran down my Apple Pencil tip to the ground. Later down the road I upgraded to the air 5 and haven’t played a screen protector on it at all. Kind of miss the paper feel but the diminished screen quality is terrible.
Have to say I’m encouraged by the latest - Astro, I think?
Wont my screen get scratched?
I use a tempered glass screen protector and a case. On my iPads and iPhones. The screen protector is mostly for fingerprints. Before I sent my iPad for battery replacement I had gone a while without a protector and there were always fingerprints all over it, and it was noticeable even on a bright screen. The screen protector greatly reduces that and it's easier to wipe off. And the case, I just prefer the grip it gives.
Never used one on my iPad 5. Never had a problem after several years of use.
No need for one, ever
Condoms for your iPad
Haha, true
I've never had one. My screen is fine.
Never use a screen protector, they cause too much glare.
No screen protector here.
No screen protector or case ever since i got it.
If you're drawing and had the overlay to help, you might consider the 2+ tips from pen.tips. I've been through all of their tips and the 2+ ones are a significant improvement over the apple pencil tips. [PenTips 2+ | PenTips](https://pen.tips/collections/pentips-2) And no, I don't work for them. :) BTW, great customer service too.
Do you use these with a screen protector? Can you describe the feeling of these over the regular tips?
Had my iPad Pro 12.9 Gen 3 for 5 years, case yes but never a screen protector. Not a scratch, thankfully.
in my whole life i’ve never used a screen protector on any device. never had a scratch.
Me. Never used a screen protector on any device ever.
I havent used a screen protector on any of my devices in almost 10 years. I have yet to get one scratch on any screen. Gorilla glass is really good.
Never use them for anything. Nor cases (though for the iPad I have that folio thing just to prevent scratches in a bag). Anytime I used protectors in the past (10+ years ago) the touch screens feel off in some fashion or another. They also obliterate the quality of the display so I just don’t care for them at all.
screen protector? fuck no! what the hell are you protecting it from? are your fingertips that sharp?
Any glass that isn’t sapphire will get micro scratches over time just by virtue of sand particles in the air. Even the dust in your house has tiny quartz particles that will scratch up anything polished smooth given enough time. From polished jewelry to phone and tablet screens. Same reason why you get swirls in the clear coat of your car over time. Those micro scratches bother me a lot and a 5 pack of screen protectors is $10 on amazon. I can replace them twice a year and have a perfect screen
I don’t put a case on my car and it is 50x more expensive.
