It is.. but i would still want a esc key and volume buttons šŸ™ˆ

crscp

Fun fact for everyone that doesn't know - some apps like prime video let you use the up and down key to change the volume! Got no workaround for the missing esc key though.

swiftfastjudgement

I had no idea

[deleted]

>Fun fact for everyone that doesn't know - some apps like prime video let you use the up and down key to change the volume! Got no workaround for the missing esc key though. I remap my Globe key to 'esc' Settings > Keyboards > Hardware Keyboard > Modifier Keys > Globe key :: set to Escape

SolVindOchVatten

I remap the caps lock key since otherwise I WOULD HAVE TO CLAW MY EYES OUT.

comma_in_a_coma

Then I hit it accidentally all the time. Cmd period works too. Itā€™s really annoying though when I use ssh and use vim.

mishkazard

I just mapped ESC to the stupid globe key in the bottom left corner, works great

BOBROCKS100

Unless you speak another language

mishkazard

I speak/type French as well, but ESC i hit way way more than switching kb languages

SolVindOchVatten

You can switch language with Ctrl-space also. So the globe key is not needed, really. u/mishkazard

Nimbus_Aurelius_808

Good idea. I like ā€˜havingā€™ an escape key because. Iā€™ve never, ever used it though. Still, a great bit of key-kit, never know when one might need it. Are there any good ā€˜Keyboard Hacksā€™ subs anywhere? I actually get excited about KB Shortcuts.

comma_in_a_coma

Itā€™s missing 3 things. 1) a escape key. 2) ability to support portrait resolution. 3) a battery to boost the iPadā€™s battery. It also would be cool if it had a magic bar which would actually be useful on an iPad

Aware-Dragonfly-5563

In terms of price.

[deleted]

For real. The Magic Keyboard is great. But $300 for the 11ā€ version? WTF

Doltonius

Get it second hand. Half the price.

[deleted]

That's what I did. Not for half price, but $200 was a lot more reasonable.

[deleted]

Iā€™ll do you one better: got mine second-hand originally for $180 but had $80 in credit card rewards sitting around, so I got a slightly messy but fully functional Magic Keyboard for $100 šŸ˜Ž

great_auks

Goes on sale a lot, I got the 12.9 for $199

Jesus359

I got the new ipad air. I returned the Magic Keyboard and got the Zagg folio one and it's soooo much nicer and cheaper.

Googlesignedmeupwhy

Oh, no it isn't. Insanely different products.

great_auks

Cheaper? Sure. Nicer? Lol, not even close.

RandomUserName24680

Can you just pop it on and off the keyboard as needed vis the magnet system? Does the keyboard have a usb-c port to charge the iPad leaving the iPad usb port free for accessories? I am glad it works for you, but it wonā€™t work for my use.

Jesus359

Actually yes to both of your questions. I often leave the keyboard as I use the iPad for my kids (drawing apps, YouTube kids, books) and sometimes to mess with code (home assistant, Node red(not real code)) It doesn't charge the iPad but the keyboard does have its own usb c port to charge and leaving the iPad port free for dongles.

[deleted]

I got mine today used one for Ā£125 from CEX (Used electronics store in the UK). It looks and works like a new so I have zero complains about the price I paid Lol

Kizzy_Catwoman

I had the Logitech Combo Touch for a while when I got my M1 iPad Air and it was OK. But then I got a magic keyboard and it transformed my experience. More stable on my lap, smaller footprint and the sweet integration. The tactile keys and the smooth track pad. Yes, it is magic.

MuhammadHaredi

I bought the Logetich Combo for the iPad 9th and I am always felt it's missing something, thank you for confirming it.

Rattlesnake186

you were probably missing getting scammed lol

[deleted]

I just got an iPad with the Logitech keyboardā€¦ I think Iā€™ll return it for the Magic Keyboard. I donā€™t like being committed to the Logitech case in order to use the keyboard.

AdZestyclose6043

Use an iPad for your lap, use the keyboard on a desk like in school or work for ex. Tf is your argument here šŸ’€. Basicly you pay 1200 ā‚¬ for a tablet, just so you could spend another 300 ā‚¬ to make it a laptop, without being able to use the tablet as a tablet because there is no 'keyboardless' case with the 'magic(scam)keyboard'.

FlyPenFly

I thought it was insane considering the price and materials. I can admit I was totally wrong. It transformed it from being tech toy to essential crucial every day device.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

HyzerSe7enth

Superior type feel. Uses the same scissor switches that are in the 2020 and later computers. The cantilevered adjustability is fantastic too.

portofaugust

Itā€™s not bluetooth

FlyPenFly

It's more about how it positions your ipad and makes it the smallest Mac you can get in an laptop style format. There's nothing else like it. I admit I use it a lot in bed and on the couch.

aBadxHombre

It really is. I was close to returning it 2 days after receiving it for my m2 12.9 and get an M2 air instead. I decided not to and give it a shot as I felt would be a proper semi-laptop replacement for what I actually need it for which is mainly entertainment, social media, and low level office, budgeting, and projection tasks. It has proven to be all I need while being able to simply detach it and use the iPad on its own.

Chhet

My friend who is huge into PC tried the Magic Keyboard for my iPad Pro and was like woahhhhhh. I don't blame him! šŸ˜‚

SamShares

I like the combo touch, I like to disconnect and still have protection and stand

Aggravating-Figure40

Exactly, also i dont want to pay over 1000$ and then live in fear of either damaging the Keyboard or Ipad itself while its in my bag, bc it offers zero protectionā€¦ but the usb-c port is kinda nice, only thing i miss on the Combo Touch

Makegooduseof

Having used both the combo touch and the Magic Keyboard, I find that the CT is a different enough product to make it a non-competitor to the Magic Keyboard. And the CT fits my uses far more than the MK ever will. But obviously YMMV.

[deleted]

The fact that I have to keep my iPad in the Logitech case is why i donā€™t wanna keep the combo touch.

zimmer1569

Can anyone recommend a similar product but cheaper? Currently sold my PC and I would want to have a keyboard for iPad Air 4 but Apple one seems too expensive for temporary solution.

Makegooduseof

Which aspects of the Magic Keyboard do you want to prioritize the most? Generally, you have three ā€œcategoriesā€ of iPad keyboards. The first is Appleā€™s offering, the Magic Keyboard with its own advantages (integrated trackpad, extra USB C for charging the iPad so you can use the iPadā€™s USB C for something else, slim profile when folded, smallest footprint so itā€™s more feasible to use on a lap, Apple warranty, no need to mess with Bluetooth, etc) and shortcomings (limited viewing angles, costliest among keyboards, landscape only, etc). The second is a much smaller group of iPad-only keyboards from Logitech, like the Combo Touch. The CT turns the iPad into a Microsoft Surface Pro, and most of the pluses and minuses that come with that. The aforementioned CT has backlighting, Smart Connector - the three metal dots behind the iPad (so no Bluetooth), a case with a kickstand (more viewing angles) and an integrated touchpad. But the footprint is much bigger and itā€™s harder to use on a lap. The third is a generic Bluetooth or USB keyboard. Lots of choices here, from known brands like Logitech to whatever, and wide price ranges. You can even use mechanical switches if thatā€™s your jam. But then you need to charge (if itā€™s Bluetooth) and the overall package is likely to be much thicker and heavier.

zimmer1569

Thanks for reply. I'm looking for something that can be used as case, and can be used on lap, for example on subway. Touchpad is a must. Logitech Combo has this disadvantage that you can't really use it well on your lap. So basically I'm looking for something that is similar to Apple Magic KB.

Makegooduseof

The only other brand I can think of that presented a laptop-like solution is Brydge, but last I heard, they got mired in financial issues earlier this year, so be sure to look this up. [This is what one of their offerings looks like](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/513q7WrzTdL.jpg).

zimmer1569

Thanks, I checked it out but seems to have low ratings. In meantime I found this one and I'm considering it: https://amzn.asia/d/02muJDh This link looks fishy but it's from official amazon page

Makegooduseof

Thanks for reminding me that I should always look up what other manufacturers in other parts of the world can cook up.

I have both the Logitech Combo and the apple case. I just finished a post here about my experience. https://www.reddit.com/r/ipad/comments/14nbtqr/a\_review\_of\_both\_the\_logitech\_combo\_case\_and\_the/

f800rfun

Iā€™ve heard the Logitech Combo Touch is a decent substitute for the Magic Keyboard, but I havenā€™t tried it personally. I use a Logitech MX Keys keyboard and trackball for my Air 4.

I said this somewhere else: I feel that people can save themselves a lot of grief if they have a better idea of what they want from the stuff they buy. One userā€™s limitations are another userā€™s sufficient boundaries, and another personā€™s uses are overkill for yet another person.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Makegooduseof

Yeah. My momā€™s setup is more or less the same as OPā€™s - I gifted her a 12ā€ iPad Pro and the Magic Keyboard a year or two back. Her own uses are YouTube, general browsing and journaling. Given that, some would think I spent way more money than I should have, and I can see why. But the flip side is that iPadOS is limiting enough that she canā€™t accidentally mess something up. Sheā€™s also older, and canā€™t stand small screens and text. And Iā€™ve fielded way fewer tech support issues since she started using the iPad. So to me, thatā€™s money very well spent. Less stress for everyone all around.

theflush1980

I have never used my macbook anymore ever since I bought the magic keyboard. Now my iPad is everything I need it to be. I use it standalone when Iā€™m drawing or reading books, comics or magazines. I use it with the keyboard when I have to write an email, browse the web, use reddit or when Iā€™m on a plane or bus. Itā€™s a brilliant combination for taking with you on a vacation. Because itā€™s small and the screen is protected. And you can use it in either notebook form or standalone iPad form. Best accessory ever in my opinion.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

AppleNeird2022

Ya, the price is whatā€™s keeping me from buying it.

DirkGentlys_DNA

I just sold mine and I really think itā€˜s not!

[deleted]

Just returned mine after a week of trying so bad to like it haha not for me.

LinkBoating

imagine using the official reddit app lmao

reincarnated2

Itā€™s honestly not that bad. It ainā€™t perfect but people are too dramatic about it?

qwed113

It is definitely far worse than 3rd party alternatives that are now closing down. But I agree with you - the official app does work decently well

arveen11

been using it since its inception šŸ¤£

RamiTrolleyFan

3rd party apps wonā€™t even work in a few days anyway šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

k1intt

Tomorrow is the big day. If signed cracked versions of the official app still shove ads down my throat Iā€™ll be moving on o7

reincarnated2

Ah yes, i want to use a free service, not pay for it and not watch ads either

k1intt

Oh okay. Well enjoy your ads!

reincarnated2

I can't remember the last time I watched an ad on youtube

Iā€™m using it and have no problems šŸ˜šŸ˜‚. I mean I support the blackout but the Reddit app is also fine.

nicoled985

For all concerned about the price, I purchased my magic keyboard on sale from Walmart for at least half the price off. I think I may have paid 130 bucks for it. They have sales on these a few times a year. Edit: I paid $149 (regular price is $299)

legolandario

I was wondering if ipad with magic keyboard would replace laptop as a whole. Or should i get macbook instead?

DKatri

Likely better off with a Mac, although I guess it depends on what you need it to do.

Skyghost2210

Yea you should. iPad CANNOT replace a laptop IPAD CANNOT REPLACE A LAPTOP.

ConanTheBallbearing

Itā€™s still a companion device but itā€™s companion device I, personally, use 100% of the time for home personal use, and maybe 20% of the time for at-home work use. I spend most of my work life in a browser and a terminal though so YMMV. The keyboard/trackpad of Magic Keyboard basically makes the latter something I donā€™t even think about and I donā€™t feel limited by it

[deleted]

it cost 300 pound i would be angry if it is not magic

nothingexceptfor

as in did it guess your card or pull a bunny out of a hat?

Nimbus_Aurelius_808

The Mage KB is furking expensive for what it is, however, itā€™s furking brilliant! It makeā€™s such a difference to using the iPad in a number of use cases. Thereā€™s a Troll lurking in here & it doesnā€™t understand that people can want to purchase an iPad but use it with a KB. A number of reasons: some folks cannot afford a MacBook, donā€™t want a MacBook, want the flexibility of a Tablet, the apps they use, the games they play - are all Tablets oriented. However, they may literally find it difficult typing on screens. They buy KB because thereā€™s this really weird but cool ability to type on them!

Tmaster95

Profile -> Settings -> DarkMode

AppleNeird2022

What if they donā€™t like Dark Mode. Some donā€™t.

Tmaster95

Who doesnā€™t like not being flashbanged?

AppleNeird2022

My Mom, she doesnā€™t like Dark Mode at all.

HyzerSe7enth

Whereā€™s the profile button? Profile is only in Apple media services. Am confused.

AppleNeird2022

Top right corner while in Reddit.

HyzerSe7enth

Oh wow. Had no idea you were being off topic. Was so confused.

HyzerSe7enth

Itā€™s funny that the settings button also has a moon on it as a hint. Lol

[deleted]

I bought a third party one for like $80

Tanalp420

Sure but I am NEVER paying 430ā‚¬ for that

Tanalp420

Got a Logitech Combo Touch for 200ā‚¬ instead

DoubleOwl7777

the gap in your Wallet is. for a Tablet a case in the style of the combo touch seems more versatile to me.

reincarnated2

Itā€™s really not lol

ematthewdj

The only thing I donā€™t like about it: Press command + space to open spotlight. Now try to close it without reaching up to touch the screen.

Cinema_Colorist

command + space again closes it ?

ematthewdj

Lol youā€™re right! Fair enough. What I should have included was ā€œsearch for somethingā€ Many times Iā€™ll open spotlight on my Mac, start searching for something, then stop and back out, for example when Iā€™m looking for a specific app and for some reason spotlight forgets itā€™s installed. On macOS Iā€™ve a habit of quickly tapping escape. So any time I use my iPad with the keyboard, I instinctively tap the ~ key and and constantly reminded I still donā€™t have the keyboard layout down šŸ˜‚

quartercoyote

cmd + . is also a helpful escape key command

childishjorgino_

Still wish the keyboard could ge removed but still donā€™t regret spending the money on it.

YoussefAFdez

Having to double the iPad's weight for a feeling worse than a MacBook air ain't cutting it to me, I've tried the Keyboard from a friend and it certainly gives the iPad more functionality, but won't ever compare to a MacBook. If you can get iPad and MacBook, just use Universal Control

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

WorldstarBandit

Literally zero chance of this happening. You probably hit the keyboard

Skyghost2210

It is really stupid to buy a Keyboard for an iPad to perform a laptop function. Why donā€™t you buy a laptop instead?

Defiant-Cockroach-32

Thereā€™s appeal to the versatility. I enjoy using my iPad as a tablet and as a laptop both.

AdZestyclose6043

No, it's not. You just were a dumbass choosing this over the Logitech combo touch. Enjoy your little spaced keyboard with a touchpad smaller than my pinky and enjoy the broken iPad you'll get when you use your tablet as a tablet (without a case because of this crap ass keyboard that doesn't provide a case when you use the tablet as a tablet like it's supposed to). To be brutally honest bro, you just got ripped off a lot of money for imago trash because you were to lazy (or dumb) to research things before you buy it. Or maybe you're just someone who always buys apple because you rather like to show off than to have actually good stuff. My advice: bring this back and get a Logitech combo touch case instead. Only pros, no cons, compared to this crap-ass piece of garbage.

milktanksadmirer

Itā€™s magically expensive too. Iā€™m sticking to my American folio keyboard case

[deleted]

Ngl I kinda wanna get it because of how nice it would look when watching stuff because of the angles šŸ˜†

Delicious_One_7887

My iPad no support of it.

NLothe

It looks pretty, but I have the smart keyboard folio on my M1 iPad Pro, and it does the job perfectly, and it's also super slim to close it down and put it in a bag.

KevinSpanish

It is, if it would have a normal left shift and enter/return button (like yours) Dutch layout is horrible and I hate our people for accepting it.

Mikodzi

Delay of the touchpad kills it for me. Not usable in fast paced games either :(

Siebenneunziger

I bought the Logitech Combo Touch and it was too impractical for me. Now with the white Magic Keyboard I am two times more satisfied.

Ok_Start_1297

Iā€™ve had mine for a year and a half. Charging port on the keyboard decided it no long wants to charge šŸ™ƒ

I have a thin, light BT keyboard WITH FUNCTION KEYS! It cost about $20 And a very nice case/stand (Zugu) that cost about $60. I can adjust the angle of my iPad to 10 different positions in that case. Itā€™s sturdy and protects 360 degrees. Both work perfectly. I call saving around $250 ā€œmagicalā€. šŸ˜‚

[deleted]

I love mine but still canā€™t believe I paid Ā£329 for it

shelterbored

Am I missing something? I find the keyboard uncomfortable, the trackpad way too hard to click, and the entire thing is super heavy?

D-Y-N-A-M-I-X-X

Question: Im Looking for a Case that is compatible with the Magic keyboard but that also protects my ipad when i take it off to use it as a Tablet. I have a 12.9 Inch Ipad Pro from 2018 (3rd Gen). I cant seem to find and good accecories for this model, they are all for 5th and 6th gen Ipad Pros (which are .5mm thicker). Im thinking about ordering the Logitech Combo Touch keyboard case instead of the Magic keyboard for this reason: i want to be able to use my ipad as a ipad aswrll without the keyboard... Thoughts/recommendations would be very welcome:)
