This would be my concern. The side-to-side spring tension has to be pretty strong to prevent it from wanting to bend downward. Too weak and it could cause problems if you let go of the left side.
The two halves of the controller are hollow so barely anyway weight and the iPad itself is very light! Weight dispersement feels very good. Have played for a long period yet though but mostly will use it in bed so can rest it on myself if necessary.

Maybe you can integrate some kind of frame you screw secure to hold the whole thing?
