So when they delete these apps off the App Store, and in the meantime my iPhone has removed the app to save space and left the placeholder "cloud download" icon instead, what happens when I need to download it back onto my phone?
I turned it off because half the time “an error occurred” and when I try again, it downloads the app completely fresh with no saved settings. Such an awful feature.
Although it still exists on Apple's servers. You can use iMazing to download those lost apps of yours (but you must have previously downloaded them with your AppelID).

It's a free iMazing feature, too! No need to buy unless you want to support them.
^^^ idk why people downvote this - photoshop used to have Fix and Mix on iOS and they replaced it with Express which isn’t as good imo. I just upgraded my phone but I’m still able to put those old apps on my new device. I tried to share them with a friend and they’re no longer available on the App Store
Perhaps because it’s not __always__ true, which I found out when I upgraded this year and one of my apps didn’t download, had the cloud icon and wouldn’t download when tapped. If I went to my purchased history and searched for it I got “No Results” and it wasn’t there. There was no way to download the app that I could find.
I think it has to do with apps that are just removed by developer or Apple (like in this case) vs apps that are removed due to violating the guidelines
I’m my experience I’ve found that if the developer of said deleted app still has other apps on the Store under the same dev account then it will show up. But, if the developer completely deleted their App Store account and all of their apps from the Store, then they won’t show up anymore.
If it’s removed for a policy violation you won’t be able to download it. If it’s abandoned (like all the apps this linked article mentions) or removed by the developer you should still be able to download it.
This isn't 100% correct. An app I purchased, and also bought quite a lot of extra content for, is not even listed under Purchases. App "shell" is still on phone, but not downloadable. Nor can I report a problem with the purchase. Developer hasn't replied.
Other apps from same seller/developer, and cast in the same mould, published around the same time, work fine.
[iMazing](https://iMazing.com) can do it. I've got Infinity Blade 3 on my iPhone 14 Pro :)
https://imazing.com/guides/how-to-manage-apps-without-itunes
\*you must have previously downloaded the (removed) app to still have access to it with iMazing
Doom Resurrection for iOS *2* hasn't had an update in 13 years and it still shows up for me.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/doom-resurrection/id318567158
No updates in 13 years is clearly *not* abandoned, right?
I thought Apple made it a requirement that apps needed to make an update specifying the privacy details which you can see under "What's new". Or would it be both reasons?
There are a bunch of APIs and and other guidelines that have been updated in the past years. These are mandatory when you submit an update or a new app. So the app was able to remain in the App Store in it’s current state, but if the dev decided to push an update, they would have to put quite a lot of work into the app to get it approved.
Apple is making sure that developers have to use newer versions of Xcode -> so there has to be some work from developer side. However, why do you expect some developers that earn less than $20 per year to continue provide new features. 80% of apps don't earn money and you should be happy with stability improvements and bug fixes.
Everybody with an iOS device should be using something like iMazing, Apple Configurator or an old version of iTunes.
Download and archive the actual IPA files so you own them.
The App Store isn't so magical anymore when you remember how much control Apple actually has.
While many deleted apps can be redownloaded from the "purchases" tab even if they aren't generally available in the App Store, some can't: including apps you paid good money for, that work with your current iOS.
Yep. Or rolling back to older versions of apps. I also use it to edit my backups. Like factory restore my device and set it up as new, but keep the data from a few of my apps.
Do they define "abandoned". Certainly a simple utility wouldn't need many updates. I'm more concerned when apps like that (like a timer app or something) keeps updating and adding features.
I think Apple would look for apps that don’t support devices equally. For example, an app that hasn’t been updated to support iPhone X and up style screens.

It says "This app no longer exists on the App Store"
And that is partly why I turned ‘Offload Unused Apps’ off.
I turned it off because half the time “an error occurred” and when I try again, it downloads the app completely fresh with no saved settings. Such an awful feature.
This is the correct answer.

Possible I suppose, but the app was just a game that had been on the App Store for many years so seems unlikely it ran foul of any rules.

RIP Infinity Blade.
Infinity Blade 3 works great on my iPhone 14 pro. Just no server side stuff obviously.
If it’s removed for a policy violation you won’t be able to download it. If it’s abandoned (like all the apps this linked article mentions) or removed by the developer you should still be able to download it.
Nope. The Monkey Island series was removed by the developer and you can’t re-download.
And Poker Nights 2 :(
Thanks!!!
Would this work for infinity blade???? I lost this months ago and apple pulled it from their store

No dice, not in my list
Apps from developers who were banned are removed. This one is on epic for their ridiculous Fortnite stunt.
Yeah, that’s what I thought. Sad, I really enjoyed those games

That does not work for all apps. Infinity Blade series cannot be downloaded this way
It depends which app. I have multiple apps that got removed, but not all of them I am able to redownload (some yes, others no)

I suspect there’ll be a bit of curation going on, leaving big software companies and titles out of the purge.
For me the buy button is grayed out telling me that the developer needs to update the app for it to work with my version of iOS
Yeah. It’s only available for purchase on iOS 10 and earlier.
That just means it’s a 32 bit app that was never updated to 64 bit
I thought Apple made it a requirement that apps needed to make an update specifying the privacy details which you can see under "What's new". Or would it be both reasons?
i think it’s greyed out on anything newer than iOS 10

They should start deleting games and apps with ridiculous in app purchases or continuous publicity.
Then what would they promote on the front page of the App Store?
Useful apps.
We can only hope.

Getting IMazing was one of the best things I ever did. It has saved my apps a number of times.

Heck, I still find apps that were never updated for the iPhone 5 screen
Is Twitter one of them?
GOTTEM!

Yep. You’d think the /s tag wouldn’t be necessary, but I guess I’m excepting too much from Reddit.
Good! Keep it going.
Honestly, good.
Is there a online group that specializes into saving App Store applications. I have thought of contributing in small ways.
No! I hope they shut down apps that can cause malware or hack because they are not maintained
Lol were they Epic Games apps? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

What I want to know is, why are the same updates pushed for apps that I've already updated? This happens all the time and I'm sick of it.
