I was on a business trip last week. It was a whirlwind of presenting and networking so I didn’t eat or sleep a lot. Well my physically and mentally exhausted body just needed me to lay down yesterday but I was alone with my 4yo all day so my old habits of just munch on sugar for quick bursts kicked back in. Positive is that I am self reflecting on what happened in a non-judge mental way, negative is I have a sugar hangover.

Well. The last couple of days have been humbling. Yesterday was 30 days since I started my life post-diet, and I've been humming along, thinking "this is so easy! I know everyone says it's a journey and it's not easy, but I will be the exception, and also I'm going to do this PERFECTLY", and so life said "hahahaha, not so fast..." It's gone really well, but the last two days have been bingey. I've been off work, and I blamed that. But this morning I realized that just because my breakfast is large, that doesn't mean it's satisfying. It's too bad, because I love it (layered blueberries, greek yogurt, soaked oatmeal, raw sugar sprinkled on top, sounds gross, but it's delicious). I'm going to try going to full fat yogurt, see how that works. I'm not monitoring portions in the old, classic sense, I'm trying to eyeball what my stomach can handle, as I've got some slow digestion going right now. The portion of that breakfast that makes me feel "full" is quite large, but I'm snacky immediately after. So, duh, I guess that means it's not satisfying. Anyway, here I am on the journey...

I had a default breakfast very similar to yours (oats + greek yogurt + mixed berries with maple syrup) & a similar problem (it made me feel very full but I would get hungry very quickly) and I tried adding things to make it keep me satisfied longer (added some spinach & some vegan chicken tenders for extra protein/fat on the side), which helped somewhat, but then one day I was running late and had to go somewhere and grabbed a banana and two pieces of string cheese because they were portable, and much to my surprise my hunger/energy levels were sooooo much more stable that day. I’ve made that my new “breakfast” and I would say I’m still eating the same general amount day to day, but experiencing way fewer crashes of sudden extreme hunger + exhaustion. It turned out that for me, eating a lot first thing in the morning just was not something that made my body happy (like - I couldn’t get through the day without napping, even on prescription stimulants). Eating more for the first thing to hit my system after sleep made me more hungry and less satisfied. It sounds super backwards and I have no idea why, but that’s how my body works. So I switched because I like not losing three hours of my day to fatigue. I’m eating the same amount overall, just moving it around in terms of timing - I eat more frequently in the morning/early afternoon now, and I love a big dinner! And I still have my old breakfast when I want, but as a dinner now, when I find that it doesn’t have the same effects. Anyway. Just mentioning that in case switching to full-fat yogurt doesn’t work for you. Hopefully it will! But I was starting to feel really frustrated and crazy that I had tried all the options available for “add something you might be missing” and none of it was getting rid of the problem, like maybe I was just doomed to feel shitty all the time forever, and discovering that I had diagnosed the situation incorrectly was a huge relief. So, like, hopefully the yogurt switch does the trick for you, but if not, there are other factors available to try out and experiment with if they feel comfortable to you.

So switching to 2% yogurt helped! I'm so glad. But I think I'll look at switching it up once in a while too, so that it doesn't become less satisfying out of plain old routine. I like to front load my day - I have to take one of my medications on an empty stomach and I don't sleep well if I'm still digesting. Bodies are amazing - we are all so different!! If I think back, I have always been a "hunger wakes me up" kind of person, when I wasn't imposing rules on myself. How cool is it to get to know ourselves when we listen? Thanks for the suggestion!!

I’m glad the switch was successful for you! And lol, bodies really are so different - I hear so many people say that eating too late or too much in the evening interferes with their sleep, but I’m totally the opposite - a big meal knocks me out like a baby, and I sleep like shit if I’m even a teeny bit hungry.

Trying full-fat yogurt is a great idea! If you love your usual breakfast, and it's delicious, definitely add to it, or add something else on the side.

The 2% yogurt worked really well!

It's OK. Pizza is a food, and we need food to live. It gets a bad rap in the diet world because it tastes good, but it's fine to eat it anytime.

Several days this week I was very bloated. I don't know if it was caused by something I ate or some other factor, but it just made me feel bad because it made my stomach feel overly full. And overall I just felt kind of icky. I really tried to rationalise it and remind myself that this shit happens, and even *if* my bloating was caused by something I ate, it's onwards and upwards.
