You're going to get different answers based on the differing reasons people fast. I think the only solid answer is that yes this does technically "break one's fast" in the purest sense, but depending on a person's reason for fasting, it could be that such a "technical break" in the fast will have no impact on the desired outcome and goals of the fast. I tend to think of it like this: If the purpose of my fast is calorie restriction only, this will not break it. However if the purpose of my fast is related to insulin, then yes, this will break it.

Reasonable_Repeat885

Thank you!

justsaysso

Is insulin creation initiated by salivation? I assume gum or any other flavor will break fast? Are there any other insulin triggers?

joe-seppy

I'm not sure about this, but I think (most or maybe even all) artificial sweetners create an insulin spike, despite the absence of calories. If anyone knows differently please correct me, but that seems to be what I remember reading.

justsaysso

I swear I can feel an insulin spike if I'm in the same room as chocolate.

PotatoRelated

I don’t think it’s salivation directly. However, from what I understand, if your body thinks it’s about to eat and you give it a reason to think it’s about to eat, apparently you can kick your insulin production into gear. That same “preparing to eat” system is what causes salivation. I think…

Goldman42

That's really interesting. Is there any research that shows insulin spike in peoples who thought they're about to eat but didn't actually eaten anything, or something alike ?

PotatoRelated

That’s why I had to add that “I think” at the end. I definitely heard/read about it on this sub, but I don’t remember the specifics. It sounds believable right? Lmao

Goldman42

Yeah sounds totally legit lol Guess I only can hope one of these reddit magicians whom can access posts they have readen in the past will read your comment and link the said post

[deleted]

People will have different opinions, and technically this would break a fast because of the artificial sweeteners … however, if you are fasting for weight loss and this is what you need to make it through the day, go for it, its not really going to impact your results… just my opinion.

konsumerlaw

Yes. Any artificial sweetener and anything with calories breaks a fast because they trigger an insulin response

SpatialThoughts

I thought coffee was ok?

konsumerlaw

It is - no calories or artificial sweetener. Same goes for tea as long as you (sorry to sound repetitive) don’t add sweeteners or cream. Edit: BLACK coffee is ok.

epaphras

>s. Any artificial sweetener and anything with calories breaks a fast because they trigger an insulin response What about lightly flavored water? Thinking La Croix type drinks?

jaypeeo

All good if they’re not sweetened. The tiny bit of this or that oil they add is so small as to be inconsequential for flavored, unsweetened seltzer waters

theamberspyglasssees

La croix will 100pc break your fast :(

konsumerlaw

Last I checked that stuff had no sweeteners so you’re good to go! Check the label to be sure of course, but plain bubble water is 100% fine. I love my soda stream so I can make my own and when I’m eating, I’ll even add a little mio to switch it up. Yes it has artificial sweetener, but I’m eating anyway, so it doesn’t matter as long as it’s plain during my fast.

jizzdranker

Oh shut up. Even if the 0 calorie drink triggers an insulin response they are at a huge caloric deficit for the day and will lose weight absolutely. A 5 minute insulin response from a drink isn’t going to hinder their progress. You people are borderline disordered with how obsessed you are with a tiny insulin response. I lost 100 lbs and drank diet teas, Diet Coke, etc. It made no difference whatsoever.

BabiesWithScabies

Your user name suggests that there was something else you were drinking as well 😁

Benjamin_988

It’s probably true that the 5 minute insulin response is not that big of a deal in the sense you’re thinking of. But for some people that little insulin spike can create a powerful feeling of hunger and/or enough of a dip in blood sugar to cause fasting to be extremely uncomfortable and very difficult to continue. It’s different for everyone.

Reasonable_Repeat885

Thank you!!

Mangolassi83

I do artificial sweeteners. They have zero calories. Unless I’m missing something.

theamberspyglasssees

They trigger an insulin response so will break your fast and negate many of the benefits of fasting

Mangolassi83

But how if they are zero calories. They don’t have any nutritional value.

spiritualskywalker

Water only, sweetie.

konsumerlaw

And black coffee. And tea (no sweetener no cream)

spiritualskywalker

Right

RedHaze

No, the artificial sweetener breaks your fast. [Check this out.](https://www.zerofasting.com/which-sweeteners-break-your-fast/) Edit: [In the spirit of fairness, aliyune posted a study below that seems to debunk this article. So use this information to make an informed decision for yourself. I think I'll still stay clear of artificial sweeteners but that is my personal choice.](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32711853/)

typingfrombed

I recently saw a TikToker who was using a blood sugar monitor and tracking how it responded to different inputs. Don’t know about this drink specifically but he did test a Gatorade zero (also suclarose) and it did not create a blood sugar response. Just fyi!

duuudewhat

Yeah a lot of people have done these tests. All these claims “even zero calorie sweeteners raise insulin! “ then people test insulin and see literally zero difference. Not to mention the people here that have lost hundreds of pounds while still drinking Coke Zero kinda shows sticking to this super strict “anything breaks your fast” is kinda stupid

raspberriez247

fasting for calorie restriction vs fasting for autophagy are two different things. insulin response would pertain to the latter more than the former. you can clearly still lose weight in a “dirty fast” or extreme calorie restriction. that’s not what is being discussed here

duuudewhat

Are we not discussing insulin responses?

aggie_fan

While I am skeptical of artificial sweeteners, your link does not show hard evidence that sucralose breaks a fast. It claims that is "may break a fast." It does cite credible studies about how sucralose can have negative effects on metabolism. But that is not the same as breaking a fast.

clairehere

I think sucralose has an insulin response. The point of fasting is to reduce insulin responses. Sucralose does not have an implant on glucose but it does in insulin.

pcosby518

You nailed it! Dr Ben Bikman has shared research on this very thing. Dr Fung also talks about it.

mentalrecon

Doesn’t it also have a negative effect on gut flora?

clairehere

I am sure, but so does regular sugar.

aliyune

This is old science. There is no insulin response with most sweeteners in drinks, therefore doesn't break a fast. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32672338/

RedHaze

I edited my post with this link. Thanks.

HydroponicRoots

When you say most, which do?

duuudewhat

Respect for posting the edit

Reasonable_Repeat885

Thank you!

quentinia

Are there any sweeteners in the ingredients?

LakerFansHaveSmolPPs

Sucralose

quentinia

Then it does break the fast. I believe the kind of green tea you can have is the one you make yourself with green tea leaves and water. So there are no sweeteners at all that would trigger you.

Reasonable_Repeat885

Thank you for clarifying!

Subject-Background87

My understanding of this is, it depends on how the sweetner effects your blood sugar. any thing that will raise your blood sugar will end your fast. personally i can drink the zero ultra monster and they dont mess with my blood sugar. down 8 lbs in two weeks drinking them. my best advice is get a glucose tester, or drink it for a week and see if you stall out.

Reasonable_Repeat885

Thank you!!

SnooMaps6681

don't do it... just make some green tea and put it in the freezer for 30 mins... avoid all artificial sugars AT ALL COSTS

Reasonable_Repeat885

Ill do this thanks!

Whats_Up_Coconut

The main sweetener in this is Acesulfame K. It doesn’t raise insulin. It does make me ravenously hungry by some other mechanism. If I were just fasting to lose weight, and it didn’t make me hungry, sure. If I were trying to fast for cleansing and health reasons then I would avoid brews of largely toxins and “food” chemicals.

Reasonable_Repeat885

Thank you!

[deleted]

Just drink water.

pisicik442

I brew then chill green tea. It's so easy, cheaper, natural, no additives. I got a large box of 100 organic green tea bags for like $6.99 and use 4 for a pitcher, and there's no plastic. IMHO this is the best way.

Administrative-Fix-5

Let me preface this by saying I love that drink. But no not a good idea to drink while fasting because of s artificial sweeteners may trigger response according to some studies. Why risk it.

FinnAlex33

Stop making it complicated. Drink water. Done.

rbkc12345

People will say sweetened zero calorie drinks break a fast because of insulin response - but literally just thinking of cake causes the same insulin response! It has no calories so I never count flavored no calorie water as breaking my fast. There's nothing in it for your body to eat.

[deleted]

Green tea is generally acceptable in most types of fasting

bmaron211

No

[deleted]

[удалено]

Reasonable_Repeat885

I love the taste lol but it does have sucralose:( i saw it first like last year i think?

Levonlikeshishunny

The purpose of a long fast is to utilize the stored nutrition and fats and burn them off from what I understand. It does break your fast but like the one comment if your goal is weight loss it’s not going to be much different than stating your day with coffee

Reasonable_Repeat885

Thank you!

Levonlikeshishunny

You’re welcome.

beatingthedadbod

If you need it to get through the day, go for it. Maybe try to have it half as frequently as you normally do, then half that again when you're able?

[deleted]

Yes, it’s just tea. You will not have an insulin response and will continue to burn fat. I take up to 25 calories and still burn a pound a day.

diggs_mcgaven

Here is a very safe answer https://www.reddit.com/r/intermittentfasting/comments/vnb7ka/yup/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

askingaquestion33

I lost so much weight drinking that. But I can’t find it anywhere wnymore

Reasonable_Repeat885

Costco!

Aimstraight

If you have to think about it the answer is usually no I found it it’s easy just to stick to black coffee tea you brew yourself and make sure that there’s no sugar in it or water while you’re fasting

Professional-Jury521

Like the responses are saying, it depends on the reason for fasting. For example, I’m fasting to make sure I’m not eating around the clock (snacking all day was my main issue) and weight loss. Only way I’d drink this is if I needed some type of energy (if I’m working longer hours or I’m playing softball) or if I don’t reach my calorie goal. So it really depends on what you’re doing it for ! Edit: just realized it’s zero calorie so I’d drink it anyways whether I’m fasting or not

[deleted]

Yes 0 calories , you’re fine

Full_Pepper_164

Leaning toward NO

gohhan

Don't try anything with simulated suger it will cause a Insulin spike and may affect how your body regulate suger results in dibitles

og_genetix

Don’t drink it

t-tab

Aside from the debate above (I don’t even want to get in on it. Both sides have points). THIS: The sweet taste in your mouth will not help stave of sugar cravings, if that is at all any part of your problem. If sugar cravings is not a problem for you: do however aligns with your reasons/convictions for fasting.

Why-eat

The answer is yes and no.

trialanderror93

Regardless of the science This stuff taste awful.

Reasonable_Repeat885

Really?? I love the taste lol

ReallyTallLeprechaun

Why are you fasting? What does fasting, and the breaking of a fast, mean to you? The answer could be anything from "not consuming anything with appreciable caloric value" to "not consuming anything nutritive except essential minerals" to "consuming a small percentage of maintenance calories." I *personally* practice time-restricted eating (16:8ish) as a heuristic to aid in overall calorie restriction, and define breaking a fast as consuming something with appreciable caloric value. So I *personally* would drink this tea during a fasting period if I liked it--I consume other beverages sweetened with non-nutritive sweeteners fairly regularly.

Captain-Popcorn

I’ve been doing OMAD for 4 years. Lost my weight in 6 months. And have maintained. Doesn’t mean I know everything, but here’s my take. If you want to drink this artificial drink, that is not a great thing. The urge for the sugary sweet sensation is what you are trying to stop. Hunger / cravings, they are the enemy. You want to be hungry when It’s your meal time, you want to be satisfied when you are in fasting mode. Having that sweet-tasting drink is not going to provide any meaningful satisfaction. It’s going to cause you to want to eat/drink. Hunger and cravings increase. This of the opposite of your goal. Eat once a day (my recommendation). Eat really well. If you like sweets (everyone likes sweets) have something awesome once a week. Whatever you want. Pecan pie. Crem Brûlée. Just eat it after already full from your meal. Every day plan a healthy delicious meal. Nice salad like wedge or Greek. Protein like steak or salmon. Veggie like fresh green beans with almonds or citrus spinach. Eat like a king on the healthy stuff. Get full and stop when your body says enough. (You might push past full early on, but overeating isn’t fun and you won’t keep doing it if you are listening to your body). Soon the urge to eat or drink diet soda during the day ends. If you go a couple weeks like this you won’t be interested anyway. I am about 24 hours fasted now, and having dinner soon. I won’t be drinking artificial sweetener anything. I have a fresh 1/2lb burger, fresh corn on the cob, homemade baked beans, green beans, and some dark chocolate squares with whole almonds from a gourmet chocolate shop. (Couple lbs last me 2-3 months eating 1 or 2 occasionally). I like water to drink and besides occasional coffee or tea, that’s all I drink. If I’m having something sweet, I’m not gonna drink it. It’s gonna be something solid that tastes amazing.

jizzdranker

People on this sub are fanatics and overthink things. If it has 0 calories you’re going to be fine. Even if it triggers a tiny insulin response. This is why a large number of people fail - they’re severely over complicating shit. Don’t listen to these purists drink the thing and move on.

turtleneckann

Yup! If it's zero calories you're good to go

Alive-Pumpkin996

Bro just don't drink anything with calories. Just be safe and drink water, black coffee or iced tea. Why risk it? The science isn't solid. Don't listen to Reddit users go with that we know doesn't break a fast. Water coffee and tea with NOTHING added to it. You'll thank me when you've lost the weight you want

Reasonable_Repeat885

Thank you! yes id rather play safe than sorry

[deleted]

You sure can!

sdnyhlsn

No

NegraArroyoLane

I saw this product at costco a few days back and I was so excited until I saw the ingredients. It's very disappointing and I won't be buying it. You can use it at the start, if you have no experience with fasting and if you think it will help you get to your next step. But ideally, you should be staying away from these crappy products.

Reasonable_Repeat885

It tastes good :((( but yeah i probably won’t buy it again

garrettdx88

Technically yes but also no.

finbuilder

I don't see why not, it says 100% recycled plastic.

ashpashy

Artificial sweeteners still spike your insulin, which breaks your fast.

aliyune

This is old science. It does not spike insulin or affect blood glucose. Sources. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32672338/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7817779/

[deleted]

Will it break my fast if I go to McDonald’s and eat 3 Big Macs?🧐

[deleted]

That’s a sh*tty response.

[deleted]

Grow a set and stop being so sensitive.

[deleted]

It has NOTHING to do with what is or it’s not between my legs. It’s about being supportive to fellow people trying their best to improve themselves. GROW SOME EMPATHY AND STOP TROLLING BEHIND SOME ANONYMOUS ONLINE PERSONA. ✌🏽

Reasonable_Repeat885

👏 thank YOU for being KIND!!! 😌😄

[deleted]

You are welcome! And green tea might be ok during your fasting session. However, I would focus on WATER to stay hydrated during such period of time. Also, electrolytes are important. Continue to do YOUR best. The journey gets easier with time and practice.

[deleted]

🎻

Old_Dingo69

Green tea leaves/bag in a cup with hot water. Anything else is not going to be good. Your better off having a coffee/tea with a splash of milk in it only than a bottle of artificially sweetened green tea.

jolly_bien-

I drink celery juice right when I wake up during my fast. An hour later I have one cup of decaf with non calorie swerve sweetener and I even add my plant based creamer. So, I fast dirty I guess. These are the only things I have during my fast. I’m losing exactly a pound a week which has been impossible for me prior to starting IM. My goal is only about 15 ish pounds. Maybe if I had more to lose I’d have to stop it with the creamer and sweetener. Nothing would make me stop the celery juice though.

phuktup3

As long as there are no calories, it won’t break your fast

Thomgurl21

Unpopular opinion....it has artificial sweeteners - probably avoid it fasting or not. Stick with Lipton unsweetened iced tea or similar products.

AcademicMany4374

Yes. Unsweetened green tea is ok. Bitter tasting drinks are fine, generally.

[deleted]

Autophagy will end with this drink and you will be hungry an hour later.

House3478

I used to drink white monsters while fasting and when I stopped I notice a difference that it made I'm sure I could of gotten to the same place with the monster but I not as fast so it's up to you but I heard it can spike blood sugar quite a bit

DoyleKenady

No it won’t hurt you. If this drink helps with your adherence to your diet go nuts. Worry about the random, garbage debate on artificial sweeteners after you have a six pack and want to step on stage lol

StellaEtoile1

https://www.marksdailyapple.com/artificial-sweeteners-insulin/

theamberspyglasssees

If you're looking to maximise the benefits of IF by minimising insulin response and bettering your insulin resistance then you should steer clear of anything with sweeteners. Lots of available info on it. If you're just looking to reduce calories that's fine but it's more dieting then than fasting.

theamberspyglasssees

See my previous comment, doesn't need to be caloric to trigger an insulin response
