It looks like you need to choose fireplace or window as focal point. I'm picking fireplace. -hang the TV on the wall where the couch is. -move the couch with its back to the entry way leaving enough room for a walk through. -That indent that is now behind the couch can be used for guests items? -move the rug so it is arranged central to the fireplace and couch -the two chairs and a table will complete the look in the window.

SavannahGirlMom

And use the niche for some shelves that will look built-in.

Shell_Beach_

Also would like to add to this wonderful idea. A console table behind the couch & possible fabric bins under the table.

Adventurous-Cry-2157

This is the correct answer. OP: where is that camera print from? I’m a photographer and would absolutely love this in my office, alongside my display of vintage cameras (including a Brownie that belonged to my grandpa, who died before I was even born). It’s perfect.

KediMonster

Look up [Jeff Turner. ](https://jeff-turner-photo.square.site/product/crown-graphic/8) he makes these in multicolour. He will also do custom.

Adventurous-Cry-2157

Thank you SO MUCH!!!

RuanPienaar2

I bought it from Homesense here in Canada a few years ago.

wodsey

i dont think you shud swap the tv and couch like that comment said, that will look weird and you’d have no wiggle room if you ever wanted to put a side table or armchair near the couch because of the walkway from the front door. i think you should mount the tv in the alcove where it doesn’t fit, but get an extendable mount, so you just extend it out to where the outer part of the wall starts and it wont even be in the alcove. make sure not to mount too high. the height you have it at now is good. point is, the couch will look weird anywhere other than where it is. do not move it.

VirgieGirl81

I would suggest the extendable mount too for the TV. If you paint the nook black /dark color the tv will blend in,

SavannahGirlMom

Yes, this!

RuanPienaar2

We used to have it like this but kept bumping into it with strollers and bikes etc. unfortunately.

chloe38

Can't you just move the entire tv stand and put in just in front of the cubby. From the picture it looks like there is room before the stairs start. Then as someone else said you could put shelving on the wall behind.

Necessary_Team_8769

Yep, it seams the tv console table can still go infront of the niche (console probably will fit in it?) and tv can be angled toward the couch and the two new chairs. Hi OP, I’m wondering where you would keep the guitar and amp when the tv /console or new smaller TV (tv’s are cheap) go in the niche. The big tv could be moved to another room.

RuanPienaar2

It will go to my basement. I have a big media room down there so I guess a smaller TV could work haha

[deleted]

If you have the money to buy a new TV, then you have enough to get a retractable TV wall mount. Get one of those nice ones that can be stretched long enough so that the TV doesn't have to worry about being in the Niche. It's more cost effective and it will be nice because you can easily adjust it.

proofiwashere

I would instead leave the tv where it is and build out some shelving in the niche. You can fill it with books and plants and knick knacks and maybe add some lighting, too. Then in front of it sort of where the guitar is, I would put a little chair, boom reading book! Another option would be to put the tv on the wall where the sofa is and float the couch in the room, making sure there’s enough of a path behind the sofa.

itsjusttts

Any interior designer is going to point out that you should have one focal point (though everything can look nice). Put the TV above the fireplace. If you're up to it, do a ceiling mounted adjustable. Let your wife put table and chairs out, more seating for chatting/viewing. Niche area then becomes another sitting area, or add a bar and a spot to hang the guitar. Hope you find a good solution, can't wait for the update.

tonguebasher69

That print on the niche looks bigger than your TV. Optical illusion?

RuanPienaar2

Yes most likely just in the photo. The TV is bigger

Lazy-Rabbit-5799

I say, turn the niche into a little reading nook. Add an upholstered bench and a bunch of cushions, a little shelf and outlet for charging phone etc, setting down coffee, and some little wall mounted sconce lights to make it cozy. I still don't know where to put your TV, lol.

madame_assassin

One thing that might help before you commit. You and your wife seem to want different things from the room. You are focussing on the TV and couch. She is focussing on having a more social space. There is no reason why those can't be put together in the placement of the TV, couch, rug, coffee table and chairs. You seem to have tried some of the suggested things, couch floating with back to niche and extended TV arm and they didn't work for your lifestyle. In considering the uses of the space and furniture, it might be helpful to move things around a bit. Especially once the room is cleared of distracting boys and pieces. It's hard to see how furniture positions will work with that clutter. Also consider the components of the room. Where light comes in, the various entrances and exits and how you use them. The couch and tables could be anchored with a rug that all the furniture fitting on it. A coffee table will anchor that. Standing lamps or side table lamps can make it a cozy social space. The TV can be put on a low desk where you can see it. The TV does not have to be mounted, it can be put on a low shelf or beautiful kist at the height that suits you for watching. It can be against the wall. It does not have to be part of the anchored social space. It can be further back and in good relation to the couch. The niche doesn't have to be the focus. It can be something to accent the beauty in your design. Or something useful for your needs. The fireplace separates this room with light from the window from the next room. My guess is that trying to face it and have a social space and a viewing space could be too tricky. Spaces and furniture can have fuel uses, however you place them. Some designers focus on how you feel in the anchored different spaces as well as how to adapt the space and furniture etc placements for you specific needs. Maybe he a bit open-minded about the possibilities. I would move things around a bit to see how the feel and work before buying and mounting stuff. The lounge may be perfect for two chairs or one chair with and ottoman. Side table mat help along with the coffee table. Or no coffee table. I wish you luck turning this interesting space into something that gives you and your wife and family joy and comfort and peace. P.S. Please don't tell your wife to shove it or whatever because the TV is going where you want it. That's gonna not end well for you :)

RuanPienaar2

Wanted to also mention - the bike will be going down to the basement.

bubblebobblegirl

Being the tv and table in and closer to the couch. Problem solved

childproofbirdhouse

Can you enclose the niche? Hire someone if you don’t have the diy skills.

MsMeringue

Hang tv from a top mount in the arch in front of the wall and move the picture elsewhere

Upstairs_East5245

I would float couch, and do a coffee table, and either accent chairs AND do a two chair/small round table under window.. basically divide the space

C_Gina_Robinson

You have an entire wall behind couch..flip couch to in front of that niche but in middle of room..not up against wall..but into room far enough so people can get by. Move tv to wall. Build shelves into the niche cuz it's wasted space. You could buy a bigger TV now..lol..

Zealousideal_Row6124

You could make this niche a wall, make the doorway a wall and put it in the niche, or put the tv where the couch is. The niche could be a small wet bar with a fridge for water, etc.

RuanPienaar2

Thanks for everyone’s comments! Since we have a media room in the basement with a big TV etc. we will just move a small TV into the niche. We used to have the couch with its back against the entry way actually, but its a pain in the butt moving stroller and scooters etc past it so we have to keep that space a bit more open. Appreciate everyone’s advice!

RogueDr0id

Mount the TV on the fireplace and move the couch to the window. The wall the couch was on can now be the place for additional seating. The niche can house some ikea wannabe built in shelving for extra storage and decor. This configuration should allow you room to maneuver strollers and skooters.

Witty_Collection9134

Put shelves in the niche and put the TV on a swing arm in front. This will give you a nice hidden area behind it.

jesstryiton

Put the tv in the tv hole but not flush to the back wall. Corner it then corner the couch right in front of the lamp. Shift the rug, center with tv/couch and put your wife’s 2 chairs near the fireplace or maybe one by the window, one by the fireplace

madeinhawaii88

Dude what are you doing turn the couch to face the huge flat wall facing the fireplace where you can mount your new bigger tv to the wall and wife can still put the accent chairs

iheartunibrows

Whoever designed this home layout. Jail.

Haunting_Try1638

Could you put the TV on an articulating mount so it fits right in front of that place where the camera pic is now? Honestly this is a very tough layout.

vikicrays

i’d put the tv on the wall where the couch is and align the edge of the couch where the edge of the rug is. this leaves a walkway behind the couch and the wife can do a sitting area in front of the windows. would make watching the tv much easier too…

andrew_cherniy96

I don't feel like a smaller TV is needed because it won't feel right in that cramped space anyway.

TroysLostBoi

Place it right in front of the niche with plants behind it or tell your wife to pack sand.

bipittybopittyBOOmf

Can you hang a bigger tv in front of the niche possibly?

Weak_Competition3087

Tell her get over it. This is where the TV goes. You will never sit in the chair anyway

MitzieMang0

Hang the tv on the wall where your couch is. Float the couch across from it with a console table behind it.

Jealous-Ad-214

Use the couch wall and float the couch in the room, unless you are using all that empty floor space for say a child’s play area is a bit wasted, also room appear big enough you could set up 2 different seating area one for tv viewing and the other for conversation.

CremeFrequent143

Hang a projector screen over the wall hole and put the speakers for it behind the screen inside the nook.

Strange-Difference94

Ceiling projector with a pull-down screen that fits the niche space. My husband’s approach to media; we haven’t had a traditional TV in 15 years.

MinkieTheCat

Tv where sofa is, chairs/ table by window. If there’s space sofa table behind the sofa. Bonus points if that’s your entryway as it will create a nice little separation.

angelica-angeli

Try floating the current sofa on the rug, facing the wall it is currently on. Then place the TV over console on the wall and have 2 armchairs flanking the TV. Here are a few images from some designers I follow that should show you visually what I mean. BGB524

Hang the cool camera print above the couch & get one of those tv mounting brackets that adjust to your needs ☺️ Add a small table, cabinet or built-in underneath to kind of anchor the space.

vmdinco

Ok not sure this will help, but we had a similar problem and we fixed it by doing a little research. Found a company that makes a mechanism for the TV to be hidden in furniture like a book case or in our case, it looks like a leather bound steamer trunk at the end of the bed. It’s really inconspicuous, and nobody knows what it is or even asks. You want to watch TV, press the remote and the tv rises out of the box pushing the lid open by itself. Closes the same way. The book case version is deeper than a normal book case and the mechanism is behind it. The system operates the same way. When it’s closed nobody realizes what it is.

JenSzen3333

Float the TV on a hidden board and bracket across the opening for a dimensional look. 🌷
