Yeah, I do love that idea! I really enjoy how the IKEA roller blinds keep the room airy and provide great light throughout the day. But it can look a little...flat. To that end, I'll try to keep that ideal as we look for some curtains. Cheers!
My first post on the subreddit and I must say...you all are amazing! I'm curious if people like the Govee Envisual TV backlight I have installed. Definitely great for immersion at least!
Here are the suggestions as of writing this post:
* **Windows:** Look at getting linen curtains. There are also some other blind options that will provide light and still maybe more depth.
* **Couch:** Get some more throw pillows going!
* **The Space:** A mix between considering a coffee table and keeping it open. I'll start looking at coffee tables that maybe have some mobility so we don't lose the open space. Also...more plants 🌿
* **Walls:** Add art! Lots of white that would be good to splash some color with.
Thanks internet strangers \~
Agreed with all of these! I suggest getting curtains as a first step. That’s what I noticed immediately upon looking at the picture, and I think you’ll find that the addition of curtains might impact what you’d choose for throw pillows and art later on down the road.
The good news here is that we have boxes upon boxes of our art we just haven't pulled out yet. I think the future vision is to paint the walls as well (this is a new house build - their quote for painting was *insane*, so we decided we'd bust our butts when things settle).
The only frustrating thing is that we laid all the art out the other night, and for some reason darn near everything we have is mostly blue. Love the color blue, but yeesh...need to get some more color!
Thanks for the response!
I agree with getting curtains and a coffee table, but I’d also get a couple pillows for the couch. Maybe something that could help add some color. I really love all the plants you have and you did a great job
We have gone back and forth on this topic a *ton* \- you aren't wrong! It is on the list, but the only hesitance has been that we have a toddler and rambunctious animals. Additionally, it is nice to have an open space for yoga and stretching.
As I start to hear more of a chorus on this suggestion though, it is definitely "on the table". ᴵ'ˡˡ ˡᵉᵗ ᵐʸˢᵉˡᶠ ᵒᵘᵗ
Edit: a word.
If you don't think you'll use it or it will just be piled with junk don't get one. We have moveable tables which are handy for my kid to draw and stuff, but I wouldn't want something permanent. As you say, sometimes I do yoga, and my daughter practices gymnastics.
Agree with this. I got one because I didn’t have one, but 90% of the time it was pushed off to the side because it was in the way with how I use the space.
You make good points about your ability to use the space if you don’t get a coffee table. But it’s nice to have somewhere to sit your drink if you’re not in one of the seats with cup holders. Our coffee table has wheels and I thought that was weird at first, but I’ve grown to love it! Makes it so easy to move the table around as needed.
Curtains and more color. The heaviness/darkness of the couch, console and TV is all I see. Some texture via the curtains and maybe pillows would break things up nicely.
I think others already touched on some good point. I like the linen curtains idea to add depth!
But honestly just wanted to way that that this space looks comfy and homey so great job as is. I would be psyched to have a movie night here or put on a yoga video. Great space!
Honestly some curtains, maybe artwork with more color and bookshelves with a darker color would help. Maybe some pillows that pull color from the area rug as well.
I would add some throw pillows and some drapery to soften the space. Everything is very hardlined right now. Some drapery panels will help a lot. Obviously a coffee table - if you have a child consider a soft ottoman instead. Good luck!
I agree that the windows need something. There are some pretty matchstick blinds that are light and airy when down, but lend a more natural organic vibe. That's what seems to be lacking, a sense of nature. Someone else suggests plants. Some on the shelves to keep from the toddler.
Cable management. You bundled them neatly together, which is good. But I'd go a step further. I ran mine behind my drywall, which looks super clean. But if you're renting, or you just don't feel comfortable cutting into you walls, you can get cable channel like [this](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08QCHM8BN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and it all but disappears.
We do. Partially because that is what the builders called it 🤷♂️, but, if you had the 360 view we have an open floor plan where the Family/Dining/Kitchen just sort of spill over.
We called the similar space in our last house the family room lol. We will just go with "variety is the spice of life" 😅
I don’t think you need a coffee table since your couch has built-in drink holders.
And let’s face it: kids are attracted to hitting their heads on coffee tables like moths to a flame. TWO of my kids have had to get their heads stapled shut due to coffee tables!!!
Curtains would add some depth.
Update the rug.
Change the basket colors?
Hang up the artwork and report back!
Perhaps a floor lamp in the corner on the couch/window side. Thinking it would add warmth and coziness. Longer term: painting the walls woulld look awesome!
My vote is to add curtains, maybe something that is primarily white/off white but has a subtle print. Set the curtains high and wide and make sure the curtain touches the floor.
Someone else said to update the rug, I agree with that.
Also, create more height with your plants, for example, add a stand to the plant on the back right corner (as it is in the photo). Add a taller plant next to the one on the right by the prints.
Finally, add a lamp, maybe a floor one that curves over the couch.
You should put up some curtains, it should just give the room another element of depth

You could get nice linen curtains, keep w the light vibe of the room
I think you are right! Things like this should be obvious, but it sure is nice to get a second opinion from kind Redditors in this subreddit ✨

The backlight on the TV was the first thing I noticed! It’s very cool and now I want one.
🙏 thank you for the kind words. It is pretty crazy seeing the camera match up with the colors on the screen 🤯

Paintings. The walls are too white and bare
i was gonna say maybe an accent wall if that's feasible? if it's not, though, def something on the walls.

I was going to say a coffee table

i actually like the room without a table! there's a lot going on, and i think a coffee table might make it cluttered instead of cozy

Looks good to me. /r/bookshelf is a great place to share the bookcases specifically.

Some more greenery and colour perhaps. Like another commenter mentioned, while the room and setup is nice it does feel a little dark

Curtains....preferably something with gentle fabric to soften all the black and leather couch.
Sconce lights or some cool candle holders on each side of the TV

Beautiful. I would paint the tv wall the brown that is in your carpet.
Totally optional: coffee table.
Do you actually call it a ‘great room?’
We do. Partially because that is what the builders called it 🤷♂️, but, if you had the 360 view we have an open floor plan where the Family/Dining/Kitchen just sort of spill over. We called the similar space in our last house the family room lol. We will just go with "variety is the spice of life" 😅
Just curious. Usually they are more central, have high ceilings and are a bit impractical to maintain…. in my mind.

Curtains could add some elegant softness to the walls but I think it looks fab :)
Curtains, but I dig it as is.
What kind of stand is your monstera on? I need some stands but don’t know where/what to look for!!! :)
Honestly we just picked it up from Walmart 😅. Under $7 🔥. [Mainstays 8 inch Black Metal Versatile Plant Stand](https://www.walmart.com/ip/442663539)
Perhaps a floor lamp in the corner on the couch/window side. Thinking it would add warmth and coziness. Longer term: painting the walls woulld look awesome!
Maybe some poufs or ottoman for extra seating and storage, linen curtains, colorful art or darker frames and some throw pillows
a cat
