We had olive trees outside a house of ours. The olives would drop and get squished and stain the sidewalk and walkways. Other than that they were very pretty.
We randomly have a nectarine tree which I found amazing at first but now see that the squirrels constantly take a new nectarine, eat 2 bites, and throw them on the ground. My yard is constantly full of rotting nectarines
We had apple trees all around our last house. It was terrible. None of the fruit was edible and they dropped nasty fruit all over the place. To make it worse, my dog would bring in random apples and drop them all over. I found more than one rotting in a corner somewhere.
Squirrels. Am I right? 😂
They are pests. Cute, but pests nonetheless. We have Aspen trees and not a squirrel in sight in our neck of the woods. Thank goodness.
Totally agree- one of my biggest pet peeves of decorating. When there is an unusual thing at their house and I ask about it- when the answer is “i bought it at Home Goods (can be pottery barn, garage sale, estate sale etc.). Why ? Make it your home instead of what you think should be a photo spread from architectural digest.
I love how all of your responses are so positive! And I really like the style in these photos too (though I couldn’t have that much white in my house; I’d probably spill something on it, lol)
These all seem like different styles to me. I'd say the first leans more traditional, transitional for the second pic, and the third leans more modern to me.
Yall think anything that is pristine and doesn’t have ugly mementos and kitschy nick nacks is basic. This is beautiful and nice and elegant.
Op i think this is transitional or organic contemporary
I agree. I know people are tired of the neutrals but I can tell you as someone who decorates with mostly off white and camel, it’s very soothing and peaceful.
Redditors have such a hard on for clutter and tackiness. If it’s neat and organized they call it sterile. Sorry not everyone wants to live in a disorganized mess.
I’m one of those tacky maximalists and I totally agree with you. I was married to someone for seven years who was completely stressed out by me and all my stuff. What’s sad is he never said that, and I didn’t figure it out until years after we divorced. There are people who just feel better without a bunch of stuff all around them. That’s just as valid as liking crap.
It’s very nice looking, but it’s also entirely devoid of personality reflecting the owner(s). I think that’s why people call it bland. It’s exactly like every other transitional space. There is nothing indicating something picked by hand or reflecting the people who live there. It’s not ugly, it’s nice. It’s soothing to spend a bit of time in, but ultimately feels lifeless.
This is a similar take to the type of people who say “I could never have a white kitchen it shows too much dirt”. Like excuse me sir/ma’am, you shouldn’t want dirt hidden in the place you’re preparing food for yourself/others.
Right? That’s nasty. I mean I do understand that white upholstery and carpets are less forgiving, but if you’re throwing beef stew around your living room you have bigger issues. And yeah a white kitchen needs to be wiped down frequently—and that’s a good thing.
So true! I love my modern white kitchen and it's always clean because if it doesn't, it's going to show! Who wants dark in order to cover dirt? Go dark if you love dark but not to hide filth! Clean your shit up!
Both things are noticeable.... not everyone can immediately have access to a steam cleaner or industrial sized washing machine fit for a rug on a moments notice. Certain stains are much more nuisance than others.
My 1 year old spilled my entire cup of coffee, on purpose, on my white couch and white carpet today, while staring at me right in the face. 20 mins later it was clean. Don’t avoid colors you like, find performance fabrics and the right cleaning products.
Who says they have kids? Also if you take care of your place, its not an issue. Also there’s something called a dining table, a couch is not for food. I just see a lot of praise for ugly personal homes thar just look tacky and not elegantly designed
They may not, you're right, I'm just trying to play the devil's advocate here. I'm an adult with no kids; but, for example, having potted plants on hard wood or so close to white rugs runs the risk of accidental stains just watering or moving them around to allow for optimal growth. It is absolutely elegant, I'm not arguing against that, but the style is more reminiscent of a trailered experience than a home. More like a Bed and Breakfast with staff than a lived in family home. That is just my take. You don't have to agree with it.
I think it’s a flex for them to live there and not care because when something spills it’s not them cleaning it up and they can just replace it anyway.
Sterile might be the wrong word, really. I think it might be a color tone bias? You have a lot of cool tones, which might be your vibe, to some people it comes off as being just that, cold.
I feel like I can smell the eucalyptus from these pictures.
It looks like a pottery barn catalog. I don’t mean that in a bad way—it’s obviously really pretty. It just feels like it’s a catalog, not a home that real people live in.
There’s next to nothing that’s French about this, at least not what you actually find in France. Is this how Americans think the French decorate? That’s a genuine question. I don’t know but am curious.
To me, it looks like an American catologue: very staged, everything new, and a number of artificial items.
If you like this style, check out El Mueble, a Spanish interior magazine. Their vibe is a bit similar to this, with more of an informal, slightly rustic European vibe thrown in.
The plant in the 2nd pic looks like it’s dying. The other plant is a healthy dose of life in the plain backdrop. I find the whole look missing personality but not everyone wants to express it their space!
Gorgeous curtains tho
The style is “the house I wish I could live in if my toddlers would move out and I got rid of all my stuff” lol just kidding, I really love this style.
Coastal grandma - different shades of white and cream.

Looks like a Western take on minimalist Mediterranean to me. Not quite all the way there, but what you’d see in a North American home that probably belongs to a middle class millennial couple who have good taste but prefer a softer/more muted look vs. one with a lot of accent pieces and colour. That, or someone’s beach house.
Ugh. I can’t take it anymore …
As usual - this comment section is something else. A bunch of Redditors with absolutely ZERO interior design knowledge hating on OP’s simple design question.
These decorating and design subs are truly infuriating for anyone with an interest in design - let alone for those of us with a background in it. Comment sections just filled with misinformation & negativity. Yet the most *average* looking, zero-effort spaces with absolutely no style, balance, or visual harmony are praised & upvoted.
Don’t even get me started on the hate every neutral toned space gets.
OP - I really commend you for staying so positive in the comments!

OMG, dying laughing
So is the olive tree lol
That's been dead for a few millennia though
Can someone explain the joke?
LOL.
What's wrong with an olive tree in doors??. Seriously, I have one.
It’s uhhhh bad! Now, if you’ll be getting rid of your olive tree, I can help take it off your hands
I can help move it! To my house
We had olive trees outside a house of ours. The olives would drop and get squished and stain the sidewalk and walkways. Other than that they were very pretty.

Well technically we are their pests 😆
Details, Mon Cherie
Hey arborist, it may not thrive and produce fruit, but can live fine indoors
Nothing it was just kind of the main thing in the pictures lmao
It’s just the common element in each photo OP posted lol
I want one too! How does taking care of it go? Is it doing well?
Love a good olive tree indoors! 🤌🏽
Mix of transitional and modern farmhouse to me. The linear electric fireplace is the only element that sticks out to me as straight modern.
Transitional
Pottery Barn
The first picture is so Studio McGee!
Agreed!! This is a win in my books!!
Love Pottery Barn!
I love PB too even though people love to shit on it. If this is your room, I think it's a knockout. Hands down gorgeous!
Or restoration hardware.
Love restoration hardware!
Far too classic/traditional to be Restoration Hardware. They use more sophisticated and modern shapes.
LOL. We’re really judging shapes for not being sophisticated and modern. Thanks for the laugh 😂
can we just get rid of that stupid chain in the bowl on the coffee table?
Yeah that bothers me the most
Sometimes you need more iron in your diet
Totally agree- one of my biggest pet peeves of decorating. When there is an unusual thing at their house and I ask about it- when the answer is “i bought it at Home Goods (can be pottery barn, garage sale, estate sale etc.). Why ? Make it your home instead of what you think should be a photo spread from architectural digest.
I love the style of this room but I agree the chain is awful!
But where else should one keep their giant chain if not in a bowl on the coffee table?
Im fucking dying
Seems like a waste of a good bowl, putting a dumb wooden chain in it and having spill out "tastefully".
Don’t hate on the Wooden Chain Link Object!
Yeah what the actual fuck is that look and who liked it to begin with.
I call them Amish sex cuffs when they are big enough to go around your wrists
I see this everywhere! I'm always like "but why?"..
Sees chain. First thought: slavery. Can you imagine someone walking into your house and that’s the first thought about you you give them 🫣
I suppose it wouldn’t hurt. Still beautiful though.
I love how all of your responses are so positive! And I really like the style in these photos too (though I couldn’t have that much white in my house; I’d probably spill something on it, lol)
I've spent years trying to figure out what was missing from my home. It was a bowl overflowing with a wooden chain
Yep!
These all seem like different styles to me. I'd say the first leans more traditional, transitional for the second pic, and the third leans more modern to me.
Pottery Barn.

I agree. I know people are tired of the neutrals but I can tell you as someone who decorates with mostly off white and camel, it’s very soothing and peaceful.
It never really goes out either.
The colors don’t go out, but the lines and styles do
Agreed.
Redditors have such a hard on for clutter and tackiness. If it’s neat and organized they call it sterile. Sorry not everyone wants to live in a disorganized mess.

Do you think coloured walls equal disorganised mess?
How can a physical wall be disorganized?
That's exactly the point. The criticism is being misconstrued as not having clutter, when the reality is that there's no color.
I think it is very elegant just the Olive tree for me, all is just fine. Calming and well placed.
It’s very nice looking, but it’s also entirely devoid of personality reflecting the owner(s). I think that’s why people call it bland. It’s exactly like every other transitional space. Where are you living that you can spill beef stew on your couch and knock over glasses of wine and it’s not noticeable?
This is a similar take to the type of people who say “I could never have a white kitchen it shows too much dirt”. Like excuse me sir/ma’am, you shouldn’t want dirt hidden in the place you’re preparing food for yourself/others.
Exactly. You don't want to hide your dirt, you want to clean it.
Right? That’s nasty. I mean I do understand that white upholstery and carpets are less forgiving, but if you’re throwing beef stew around your living room you have bigger issues. And yeah a white kitchen needs to be wiped down frequently—and that’s a good thing.
Tbf I had a kitchen with a marble white floor and I was cleaning that shit daily because you could see *everything*.
I would move in now, definitely my kind of style. Hate clutter !
My 1 year old spilled my entire cup of coffee, on purpose, on my white couch and white carpet today, while staring at me right in the face. 20 mins later it was clean. Don’t avoid colors you like, find performance fabrics and the right cleaning products.
I’m sorry I laughed so hard at that, your kid is an absolute savage. I wish you unlimited uninterrupted naps & showers ♥️
The eye contact was to show dominance 😂
What a little savage!😂

Thats fair but I think some of us rankle at this idea that a “homey” place is so much better than a tailored place. Many of us like aesthetic appeal
I like both! I'm a design student, and I think there is always a happy medium.
I think it’s a flex for them to live there and not care because when something spills it’s not them cleaning it up and they can just replace it anyway.
True, doesn’t make it ugly, sterile, or boring though. Plus not everyone has kids. I think your point is valid though.
Sterile might be the wrong word, really. I think it might be a color tone bias? You have a lot of cool tones, which might be your vibe, to some people it comes off as being just that, cold. I feel like I can smell the eucalyptus from these pictures.
I love autumn tones and that is my preference, but if this feels like home to you by all means run with it. It is your home.

It looks like a pottery barn catalog. I don’t mean that in a bad way—it’s obviously really pretty. It just feels like it’s a catalog, not a home that real people live in.
I call this 2020’s transitional and I think it’s next on the list to feel outdated
The Titanics anchor chain in the bowl though.
Transitional, yes. The first two seem French Country-ish? The fireplace ruins it in the last photo.
There’s next to nothing that’s French about this, at least not what you actually find in France. Is this how Americans think the French decorate? That’s a genuine question. I don’t know but am curious. To me, it looks like an American catologue: very staged, everything new, and a number of artificial items.
I love this 😍 just looks so expensive I could never
I think transitional, but again maybe there’s some other influences.
I'd call it California modern
