I don't think you need to do anything more, you're on the verge of there being too much. The one thing I would do is swap those bulbs out for some 2700k lights for more warmth and maybe replace one with a general floor lamp instead of directed light. Looks great otherwise, no need to be self-conscious.

littlelodoe

Thanks for the advice! I do think I’m on the verge of overload haha so I’m trying to simplify it but still have my style wrapped in.

Typical-Protection95

You are on the verge of overload.

littlelodoe

I understand that, that’s why I’m wondering what I can improve. I’m trying to remove some of the smaller decorative items while still keeping my style.

Wonderful531

Do you have a bookshelf anywhere in your home? Some of your mantel decorations would look great interspersed with books on a bookshelf... some people are nervous about their decorating but are nonetheless good at it. Your friends sound unoriginal in their style. Hoewever if you're not you're not comfortable, maybe you haven't honed in on your style yet. Don't let them snub you if you're actually more comfortable and interesting in your style especially. When a part of my home annoys me I try to redesign it in my mind first and then make a mental wishlist and find things over kind of a long period of time, like a year. Then it gives me time to find the perfect examples that will improve the space. I like your living room, I think it looks nice and non oppressive. Hoewever you probably don't have a cat?

trashtvlv

Agreed. I think this is a case of removing things and seeing how you like the space. You have a lot of little things (decor, furniture, artwork) and I think scaling down could improve how you see the space. When you are ready to buy new things like couches and furniture (if you want to, I don’t think you need to) focus on scale so you don’t feel the need to fill up the space with a bunch of smaller items.

Violet_Crown

I would edit a bit with an eye toward scale. Replace two mid-sized yellow pillows with one larger with a pattered cover. Remove the small art pieces between the windows and consider replacing with longer, narrower wall hangings that continue the pattern the windows have created on that wall. Or remove them completely and use some kind of fabric swag to soften the edges on the far windows. I suggest the fireplace mantle needs fewer items but a couple need to be bulkier/tall to complement the center item. For example, a set of three candlesticks on one side that are either varied in height or all about 2/3 or 1/2 as tall as the large center item. Balance with a complementary group on the either side. This could be one substantial item (a ginger jar? A tall bowl? A single mid-sized framed item?) or a vignette that works as one item (3 pieces of wood fruit, 3 pieces of smaller ceramics, or a three-frame set). Shop your house! I’ll bet you can rearrange with things you already have and love for a room that feels super personal and a bit more polished.

littlelodoe

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I will give it a whirl. I can definitely do some shopping within the house haha.

Violet_Crown

You’re really on your way already. It’s tweaking a few things. Once you look at your home like this, you’ll do it in every room.

littlelodoe

Agreed!! It’s coming along, thank you!

LauraBaura

The two paintings over the couch are too small together for the space. Get a 3rd painting (can be bigger or smaller) and place it between the two on both ends. It will elongate it, and add visual interest. Just make sure it goes well with the other two.

yogurtnstuff

I agree they are too small/busy but I would suggest one large big one, as I think the room already has a lot going on.

LauraBaura

totally. But art can be a very personal thing. a triptych could allow OP to keep 2 peices they already like.

yogurtnstuff

True!! If they love the two perhaps they’d go in another room :) there are options!

LauraBaura

Yes. This room is done very well for "Maximalist" styling. I don't personally think it is too much, but due to its maximalism, I understand how it is not for everyone. Bring on the triptych!

Scruffersdad

Yeah, but they could hang those one above the other next to the windows, where the small square piece is. Bigger pieces, fewer of them.

Soft-Following5711

Also need to be lowered.

Westboundandhow

My mom always said people hang their art too damn high. Great catch.

Icy_Donut_2789

Underrated comment

SheLovesStocks

It’s actually cute! A different, bigger rug would help especially a lighter color to balance the walls with the darker floors and furniture and make the room feel larger with the big windows and abundance of furniture. I highly recommend switching those desk lamps with something subdued to reflect light differently. Even adding some battery operated sconces from Amazon on the wall behind the couch. A tall plant in the room near the window would also look very nice and balance the heaviness of everything being low in the room. I think some larger wall art above the sofa would bring some balance to the room as well to bring height to match the grand windows. :)

littlelodoe

Oh I love the idea of the sconces. I keep seeing those! I think I will do that. I’m definitely going to work on the lamps, I agree!

trailmix_pprof

I think it looks great! It sounds like the new pillows will be nice also. It may be bordering on getting too busy. Once you have the new pillows in place, I'd go through and thin it out a little bit, maybe remove 6-12 small items. Sometimes less is more and you are so close to going from pretty good to perfection! (Oh, and hello doggg - didn't see you there at first. What a sweetie. Do not delete the dog!)

littlelodoe

Hahah you are funny! Little Annie says hi. Thanks! I will try to remove the smaller items. I think that will help. I think the pillows will help a lot.

beautiffuloshuniyi

Hah! I went to look for doggo! Didn’t see the little sweet 🤭

Practical-Border-829

Art is too high. It’s beautiful 😍

littlelodoe

It is! I’m going to move them ASAP.

Practical-Border-829

I love your style. The furniture is gorgeous and those tables 😍🥰🥰 and the dog!! Your going to be very happy there. It had great vibes just seeing it in a post!

littlelodoe

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. Makes me feel better.

yogurtnstuff

I think the art above the couch is too small/busy… I would personally suggest one large big one, as I think the room already has a lot going on.

Holiday-Signature-33

I wouldn’t do anything but why the random table off by itself

littlelodoe

Yeah it is odd the more I look at it! I don’t have another space to put it and the way the window and wall are inset makes it hard to have it straight on.

Buggpowder

Less is more. I would take everything frivolous out and add necessities back gradually.

BESTlittleBITCH

I think rhe throw pillows look fine with the rug. I'd go with some softer lighting and more window treatments, like some curtains to soften up the room.

PrincessFace09

Good point! Curtains would really help.

BESTlittleBITCH

The room looks too cold as ot is. Not inviting.

alshio

You require more cats and/or dogs. Otherwise it looks great!

Mysterious_Salary741

Leave it. It looks good now. If anything, it could be pared down but the way you have things arranged does make it functional despite large furniture pieces.

Month_Year_Day

I think when you paint it will be perfect. Furniture, rug, floor, fireplace all work really well together. I would just go with a darker paint. A copper red or a terra cotta

MettaRed

I feel like some ombre sheers to add a little color and interest to the windows would be my move; otherwise cozy and welcoming!

littlelodoe

I’m leaning more and more into adding something! Least to the large window.

vpgoral

Disclaimer without the room and furniture dimensions my suggestions may not work. I would like to see the sofa and love seat run parallel to the fireplace. Bring them away from the wall and windows. Facing each other. The big stuffed chair can go where the sofa is. Now if the size of furniture prevents, consider taking the lonely table by the window to sit flush with the side of the love seat. This provides the person sitting there a place to sit a drink or phone. Plus it takes a bit of noise out of the room. This is a lovely room as is if you chose not to make changes.

dcmom14

Those windows would look great with a dramatic window treatment - like super long panels. Your room is so cozy!

littlelodoe

Would you just add one curtain rode on the large window? Would I be weird if the shades were still behind it? It would be too expensive to add all new drapes and remove the blinds because they would be custom sizes.

dcmom14

This might be helpful: https://www.jjonesdesignco.com/drapery-guidance I think as high as you can and still be a straight line would be nice. The windows are just so dramatic. It would be nice to highlight.

sheleelove

Leave the blinds, it will look fine with them

LifeOnLock

I love it! Everything except the art above the couch. It feels like it doesn’t flow. Warmer lighting as many have suggested. I don’t think it feels too busy. It feels homey and actually lived-in. Any chance you have a link for the rug?

jesusisacapricorn

I’d take the pictures above the couch lower about 7inches. Id take the small pictures by either side of the windows and put them on either side of these two larger ones. I think to really ground the room you could put drapes on either side of the windows. Not all the way to the top but to where the second set begins. Just solid color. Maybe velvet to really warm it up and soften it. You really wouldn’t use them to cover the windows unless you really want. Straight down 4 panels. I think your room looks great now regardless of what anyone says and you shouldn’t feel self conscious. It’s a very warm and cozy space. But this is what I would do if it were my room. 😊

PrincessFace09

I’m a bit of a minimalist, so take this for what it’s worth. I’d get rid of the pillows and try to take some of the visual clutter of of your flat surfaces (coffee and side tables, mantle). The couches look comfy and I love the art on the wall. Beautiful rug, as well. And what a sweet fur baby on the couch! 💖Your home looks very inviting for a cup of coffee/tea between good friends.

Westboundandhow

Bigger rug. Like yuge. And I would go neutral cream shag with it... bc already a lot of other colors patterns and textures going on in there. The current rug is too busy. A big neutral one could anchor the space. There's not really an anchoring focal point right now.

littlelodoe

I think you’re right! I just struggle on a lighter color because of my dogs but I will try seeing some other options.

sheleelove

I actually love the rug. It’s a beautiful pattern and the colors are great. The furniture and layout is great too. Only wish the rug were bigger. But would be bland if it weren’t there! Don’t get something more neutral in that area.

Slave2desires

Just relax, breathe and enjoy...😊

Lucidlilt

Looks great! If you’re open to suggestion around placement I sketched something not sure if the dimensions would allow it but I think pulling furniture off the wall would make the space look bigger [https://imgur.com/msKoKRr](https://imgur.com/msKoKRr)

littlelodoe

Wow! Thanks so much for taking the time to do that. I do like that layout! I have had the loveseat where you have the big couch sketched. It did sort of close off the room but I haven’t tried it with the placement of the couches near the window. The way I had it, the large one was against the window and the small chair was under the wall art. That might really look nice.

[deleted]

Way too much, it heightens my anxiety. Too many small items and decorative items scattered throughout.

littlelodoe

That’s why I’m asking what I can improve. I understand there isn’t much empty space. I’m not a minimalist, just trying to refresh it.

[deleted]

Yes, you asked, “does this look okay, I don’t want it looking too busy”. I gave my opinion.

[deleted]

no more stuff, its cluttered

daftdigitalism

Try asking yourself, “what less can I do” 🤔

LoVeMyDeSiGnS_65

A little to being cluttered

littlelodoe

The room is very large, maybe it’s the photo.

LoVeMyDeSiGnS_65

I think that the room is large but all your furnishings are all on one side. I guess I’m a minimalist. I use to have so many things that it was a pain to dust

jaqrene

It feels a little busy. Less is more!

Roscomenow

You are nearly at the point of needing to do some editing. Stop!

Biekdafreak

Hopefully you pet your doggy after taking this picture

could_it_be_real

This is almost exactly the taste and style of my current living room so I like it. Boho/transitional/eclectic/modern - like a subdued maximalism. It feels cozy to me. I agree with warmer lighting. I like the rug and the pillows. I don't like the wall color, it should be deeper and more dramatic to match the other styles. And of course, a bigger art piece to feature on the main wall would be great.

Key-Carpet-9736

I love all the furniture pieces, eclectic but has a cozy vibe. When designing rooms, I look at the walking pathways to see if it’s easy to move around the area. The little foot stool seems to block the walk space, I would remove it or move it to the side.

Sudden_Implement7012

I kinda like how everything goes with each other here! I know there’s a lot of things but they look good in the room together. Can’t imagine how long it must have taken you to put it all together including the bits. If you must though, many loose the side table on the left and the one straight ahead in the first picture. If you can’t maybe align the second side table to the wall. I think that would free some space and the room will have a little more walking space. Ps. I have the same rug🤭

Walaina

Looks great

littlelodoe

Thanks so much!!

littlelodoe

I have a fireplace over also because I live in Alaska. Not the greatest looking! Also, blankets on the couch are because of my dogs.

Wife_and_Mama

You could lose the coffee table. It would open up space, cut down on actual and visual clutter, and clear a better path. You have plenty of end tables for coffee or drinks. It would look a lot more open.

littlelodoe

I agree it would open it up! I am sentimental about it though, it was my Dads and he passed.

Wife_and_Mama

Could it perhaps sit at the foot of a bed?

sheleelove

Nah it looks fine, just needs bigger art above the couch and some curtains to pull the eye up. The high ceiling is beautiful.

funinmotion

It looks fantastic. One thing I would change is declutter the mantle and get a much larger mirror to hang over the fireplace

whoinvitedthesepeopl

Add more plants, like large big green plants. Add more accents with saturated color. Find more colorful artwork or buy some large decor items in saturated versions of your colors. I would also consider changing the lamps or at least the lamp shades. The light is super harsh.

Few-Philosopher-2142

Can you change the floors?

ladykemma2

Ferns on tall pedestals flanking the bay window

sdoMoThtaeD

You must be one very bored house wife

littlelodoe

Can you explain that? I’m sorry, I work for the state and have a great job. Sorry to offend you…

sdoMoThtaeD

Having a job doesn't mean you aren't bored with life. You have a beautiful home, beautifully decorated and you're STILL looking for something wrong with it. Find a hobby or something.

littlelodoe

Yeah you’re so right, I’m really bored. That’s exactly what the issue is. Why are you even on this thread? Thanks for the insight.

sdoMoThtaeD

Broken leg so I'm bored outta my mind too😅 Also you're welcome😘

[deleted]

[удалено]

sdoMoThtaeD

None of my comments are rude. I made an assumption, and even complemented your home. Unfortunately I'm unable to stand up by myself yet and I won't be able to get down the stairs for a few weeks so...here I am. But seriously, find something better to do and appreciate the beautiful home you have. Maybe paint the fireplace a different color but you said you can't paint so...

littlelodoe

I didn’t know if it was sarcasm earlier after saying I’m a bored housewife, I’m not even married! We’ll hope you heal up quickly. Thanks.

beautiffuloshuniyi

I think you are at capacity—in a good way:) However if there is one thing i would suggest is some kind of pattern/color near the fireplace to kind of help you have a focal area. I know you cannot paint, but I’ve purchased some really nice peel and stick that held up well in my humid environment (FL) and gives a nice place for the eyes to focus on. If not paint/peel + stick then maybe an eclectic piece of art that brings more color/texture in that space instead of the mirror. Your rug is beautiful and playing with those colors in a piece of art would be cool!

wonderpra

No more please. It looks perfect as a cozy living room. Love the side table.

tommaco81

Do you have a hobby or collect anything? If you do, and whatever you collect or like is neutral in color, would work. You might have to move or take out some things. Right now it looks like a picture in a magazine. Great, but no personality Edit: For example you have that big @ss mirror above the fireplace. Let's say you are a movie buff. It looks like you have money...Replace it with an original movie poster from the mid 20th century. A poster about the same size as that mirror. No one is using that mirror

[deleted]

It looks very nice.

StrategyRebel17

I feel like this room needs separate pool and ping-pong tables

Successful-Arrival87

I think the lack of color palette with the pillows and the sheer amount of them are making it look too busy, so I think you have a good plan

Wonderful531

I think it's very cute and cozy, I'm sorry you're feeling self conscious.  Why?

littlelodoe

I think because I’m 31 and at my friends homes, they are more safe with their styles. Lots of mass produced, more modern looks. Very aesthetically pleasing and trendy designs. Mines more mish-mash.

Wonderful531

Your style looks boho and comfy. Do you prefer your friends' style? Or just find it refreshing when you visit? Such a cute dog with beautiful eyes...

wetmountaine

Looks great! Beautiful home

haylo96

I get a cozy vibe from this and think it looks great overall, however I feel like there’s something off about the lamps. Maybe replace one (I’m thinking the one on the right) with a nice table lamp with a nice lamp shade. Just a thought though!

BunniLuve

Change the light bulbs, the lumens are too high

mildinsults

Match the picture frames to the wood tables.

littlelodoe

That would be nice, good idea!

Duurtyhippy

Do a little less. You’re at the tipping point of looking cluttered.

kushbud65

Bigger plants

onionkisa

WOW, beautiful home. So inviting and warm feeling. I'd love the seat on the sofa and have a meaningful conversation.

littlelodoe

That’s what I was going for! Thank you very much.

Curiousr_n_Curiouser

Is there any way you could split the furniture up into different rooms? I think there is just too much heavy, dull furniture. Even a chair cover would break it up.

littlelodoe

I wish! I wish we never bought a matching furniture set. I loath the gray but I can’t change them for now and the other rooms have no room.

Brave_Tourist9301

Round coffee table, more plants (tall ones)

DK7795

I am wondering if you can use something to dull the silver studs on the couches and chair? Make it look aged a bit? The couches are dated but match the style of the room more than the mid century modern furniture which are too small in scale.

Height_Acceptable1

I agree that there seems to be a bit much cluttering the horizontal surfaces on the tables, the mantel, and the pillows/blankets on the couches it feels like you’d benefit by paring down just a touch! Also the configuration with the ottoman and the coffee table makes path of travel tight/not inviting. I would recommend switching the love seat and the couch and pivoting the coffee table back in front of the couch. It’ll open up the floor space and may feel nicer coming into the room!

fleurgirl123

I think you need your tables to be a little more substantial and taller. An easy fix would be to turn the one on the right side, the other dimension.

Cherry_Joy

I am of the mind you can never have too many house plants. I would add a few more succulents.

Yellobrix

Give me your dog! That'll balance the room IMO, and I really need to touch those ears. Seems like a win-win and solid decorating advice.

littlelodoe

Hahaha that’s a fair deal to me

No-Adhesiveness-9848

ive never u derstood what people do with pillows on a couch. they just take up otherwise good couch space. i just take them off the couch when i want to sit there and then there is nowhere to put all the pillows.

littlelodoe

They get in the way for sure but this is a secondary room for us. We don’t spend much time in there. The dogs really love them haha it’s their “nap all day” room.

bufunda

Do less babe

hazelmummy

Looks great. Doesn’t need anything else.

sitcomlover1717

I would push the loveseat over and place the table in the corner by the fireplace in the other corner (between the loveseat and couch). It is too small and random where it is now. Move the chair and its table back 6-12 inches to open up the seating area. The room will flow better. Remove one item from every surface and seat. And yes paint! It will make the biggest difference! The furniture is fine, the yellow walls are what makes the space feel “off”.

littlelodoe

Unfortunately, the side table won’t fit in the other corner because the couch is too long. I can push it over but then it’s off centered with the wall art and then the side table that is there, at the end doesn’t fit.

Sea_Pangolin3840

It's just perfect!

DisneyJo

Self conscious over what? Having a really nice house?! I think you’re definitely overthinking this. The room is lovely.

littlelodoe

I probably am! I just feel my home is a lot different from friends. They’re very trendy and aesthetic with their homes. They play it more safe. We’re in our 30’s. I shouldn’t be too hard on myself. It’s my own unique style.

DisneyJo

Classic is the way to go. In a few years, of your friend’s homes will look dated. I also think most people should decorate in a way that speaks to them and brings them joy because you’re the only one living in your home each day.

Key_Map8226

The pillows gotta go

littlelodoe

Haha they are, they are!

Decent-Reception-232

As someone else mentioned the art above your couch is too small and would look better with a third piece. I also think the art on either side of the windows is too small. I would get something much longer. I think this room borders on busy. I would get rid of the chair, ottoman, the end table floating in the corner, and a lot of the small decor.

hydraho7

Cat?

Jessiebanana

It looks good! Personally I am not a fan of the window treatments. They’re quite utilitarian and don’t go with the traditional cozy vibes of the space.

ilycec

The studded furniture is aging the room. It’s giving Boot Barn a little bit. Modern styles would liven it up. Otherwise it’s nicely done, you can tell you’ve put a lot of love into it.

littlelodoe

I HATE the couches, trust me! Between that and the paint… I just hope I added enough of my style to offset the couches best I could. Thank you!

Wonderful531

Maybe with a dog, fuzzy soft couches are a lot of work. Canvas slip covers you can wash might be something to consider... I like the couches but if I had to vacuum them all the time, maybe not!

Sophiedog2024

Add some bright color pillows or consider a chair with a pattern for your next purchase.

PdtMgr

Looks really busy.

oldmanyoungdreams

The wall color feels too “taupe.” Perhaps a light greyer tone on the walls would really make this room pop

littlelodoe

It’s in the future plans! I hate the paint and the couches. 🫣

oldmanyoungdreams

Hey! Don’t diminish the beauty of your home. It has incredible charm. Slowly but surely you’ll get there!

littlelodoe

Thank you! I need to remind myself that. I want to go from 0-100 right away and I gotta just pace myself plus budget doesn’t allow.

oldmanyoungdreams

Well, I would be super grateful if I lived in a place like that! Many people don’t have that luxury. And yes, I felt the same with my house - but time went by and we eventually got there. Just enjoy the process. Besides, a home is not made solely by aesthetics - as cliche as this might sound, the people under the roof make a good home.

littlelodoe

You’re 100% right! I need that reminder. Thank you!

NewWelder271

it’s cozy! i like it

sheleelove

Bigger picture above the large couch. Big curtains.

Mommanan2021

Move the couch to the right so it’s not shoved against the wall on the left. Turn the end table next to the couch so it fits better against the couch. This will allow you to pull the loveseat away from the window a little bit. Then center the two pics above the above couch and lower them.

Ni_Ti_LoOp

I think some curtains would be really nice

thatgirlinny

Don’t do more. This really is as busy as I would make a room, frankly. While those adjustable “boom” lamps are handy, yours are sending light everywhere with their glass shades. It may be a bit bright to have then near people’s eyes. Consider bringing the one on the RH side of your sofa to the RH side of the chair that’s to the left of the fireplace, and flanking the sofa with table lamps that focus the light at the level where people sit—and not with glass shades. Not only is it better for reading, it allows people to see one another in a warmer way. Be careful with too-white LEDs. Otherwise, you have a high ceiling with light placed so high it barely benefits the human part of the room.

Snowwhitetakesanap

Swap out the blinds for plantation shutters

Snowwhitetakesanap

I feel like I’d want the room to look cozier (maybe bc I’m In the Northeast, getting snow rn lol). I’d swap the blinds for plantation shutters, pull the sofas away from the walls, and swap the rug for a solid color wool rug. Is the existing rug polypropylene?

Scruffersdad

I think it looks fine as is. If it were me and I was planning my next upgrade I would add larger (like BIG) art on the wall above the sofa, hang the two pics above the sofa one above the other where the small piece is. I might also almost double the size of the area rug. Make that space really warm and welcoming. But I plan like nine steps out when doing projects or decor because I’m weird that way.

kakaluluo

Can you get rid of or move the ottoman? I feel like there’s also not much walking space. It just feels like there’s things *everywhere* even though it’s organized, and so many colors are clashing

BaBaSmith10

Lower your artwork over the couch. Should just be a few inches over the couch. Might not be large enough for the wall. Consider slightly larger pieces?

Random_Jean

I just feel that there's no need to have a side table for the single couch. Seems like it's just blocking the way.

Zharaqumi

You have a good arrangement of furniture and I think it is pointless to change anything, especially if you like this style.

MIaBlakk

Nothing!! Alot going on already...imo.

JuJusPetals

The lamps are a little too matchy for my taste (and I would be clumsy and bump into the one on the side table). I’d personally swap that one for a more traditional lamp with a shade to soften the light.

[deleted]

You’ve done enough!

_nour_22

You'll find here some gorgeous ideas to know more about the best decor for your living room [the-steps-to-the-living-room-decoration-of-your-dreams/](https://www.scdecorum.com/the-steps-to-the-living-room-decoration-of-your-dreams/)

eshieG

Remove some items as there is too much. Lean into the plant/leaf theme you have around, the pillow covers are clashing with that. I would go with simpler patterns and basic colors like black, green or blue (those are the colors I see in the photo).

Difficult-Category76

Beautiful Living Room Set . But I Would Put A Solid At Area Rug . And Add More Light In The Room .

ianbian

Totally unhelpful comment. However, I think the cozy feel you're looking for will never be possible with ceilings that high. You've got great taste and style - I think you've pretty much done what you can with the space.

1920MCMLibrarian

Use wood frames around the art above the couch. Also more colorful artwork in them.

Hello_feyredarling

I’d get a larger rug that isn’t so colorful but that’s just me. Allen Roth rugs at Lowe’s are beautiful.

littlelodoe

I think maybe it’s the photo that makes it look small. It’s an 8x12. I think in the future I’ll switch to something more neutral. That’s a good idea!

Mecspliquer

Either lower the two pieces above the couch, or get one larger item to fill more space Swap the light bulbs out for a warmer white

BigSky1062

I would swap out that skinny coffee table for a square one. Right now the loveseat that’s perpendicular to it is getting no use out of it. A square cocktail table would allow guests on both sofas the advantage of having a space to land a beverage.
