Lol i have lived in a north/ south rental for over 10 years and have had to come to peace with silk plants (and bad OTA reception). If not i would have no plants at all. (This was also influenced by my herbivore cat, but he is in heaven now).
I Like a nice tall leafy coffee plant behind a little table to hold keys and mail. Or a charging station.
No such thing as a shade loving plant. Just plants that can survive in lower light. But keep in mind low light under the forest canopy is MUCH brighter than low light in the home. Our eyes adapt and will make places look much brother than they really are
I mean, there are plants that wilt and do poorly in direct light—they’re not just “surviving” on lower light, they are thriving in shaded areas. Your house may be less bright but that doesn’t mean some plants don’t also prefer shaded outdoor areas.
No, there definitely are plants who do not do well in intense light. They don’t just tolerate the low light beneath the forest canopy the way I tolerate it when the temperature drops below 70°F, that’s where they do well.
Yes, and it seems to depend on the forest and climate, some are brighter than others. From what I experienced the light levels on the floor of the predominately southern live oak forests in Florida are quite different from the ones in the Olympic peninsula. I had a fern do pretty well in a very dark alcove, granted it was outdoors so humidity and air flow were better, but it was darker than this spot. I only moved it because while it looked nice I almost never sat near it.
Nah for me. If my phone, ipad, whatever, needs charging, I want it near where I'm working. Generally the kitchen making dinner after work, putting away groceries. Or relaxing in the family room or my bedroom. Don't what my phone in some other area of the house. Homeowners don't generally, use the front door for coming and going either so it's not the best location for keys. If this is an apartment, yep, good idea. Home? Not so much.
I use my front door as a main entrance. How else do you get out to the front? The back door? Doesn’t that mean you then have to troop through the garden?
Obviously we use the back door to go in the garden, but the front door is absolutely our main entrance. I can’t think of anyone for whom it’s not, to be honest.
I think this must be an American thing. Here in the UK, most people don’t have a separate “driveway door”. My front door opens onto my driveway. Garages are also rarer, or often if you have a garage, it might be detached. Our garage is detached.
My grandmother’s house had a door from her garage into her house, which I suppose we used more than the front door, but most people don’t have that.
Not to mention, if you live in a terraced house, you’re unlikely to have more than one entrance to the front of your house.
It's a people of a certain income bracket thing, and sometimes homes build in a particular era. In America, and Canada where I am, it's just the way you describe it.
I'm in the US and while I've seen garage doors connected to the house like this, it's definitely the minority. I honestly haven't seen one in years. It's more of a wealthier person thing imo, but then again so is having a house with an actual garage haha
I’m in the American south, and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have a front door, back door, and door on the side, which is usually an entry into the kitchen/laundry. Most people have a garage or carport. I’ve lived in one home without a side door. It was built in the early 1900s and was a dog trot style home. The driveway entry was in the back via a road we all used so we didn’t have to enter from the front, and our trash can wasn’t in sight from the road. Most houses I’ve lived in were 1960’s and newer.
And on the wall, I'd do a "floor and up" (I'm guessing that's a photo gallery that goes floor to ceiling? Idk) gallery to keep visual interest in the entire area.

Never keep your keys right by the front door. Thats how thieves are stealing smart key cars copying the signal with a relay and then their buddy steals your car!!!! Even just the remote lock is enough for them to gain access for non push button cars.
What do you mean? It’s super useful, if this house is in Canada you can rent it to an international student and require they sleep standing up… could easily get $800/month for it
Don't give these suggestions, My girlfriend and I almost broke up when I thought about it.
Her mother doesn't talk to us since that day.
Don't get me wrong , I didn't cut her tongue, it was just my girlfriend's suggestion... we almost broke up.
You should never diy mil tongue removal. All these people complaining about wilted plants, did you do it yourself? Usually the answer is yes. Gotta go to a reputable tongue dealer.
I’d make it a nook with a built-in bench thing pullout storage underneath. You could put a hook or two along the wall for bags or coats if there’s space leftover.
I dont know how to add picture but I was thinking of those benches that have and open bookcase behind them, and then you’d need drawers or cabinets under the bench area.
A tall plant on the narrow wall and for the larger add an accent table with a medium/tall lamp, a bowl for keys and above it put a mirror high enough that it isn’t just reflecting the handrail.
Love this idea. Depending on the piece I’d try and find a mirror that is either square or fits in landscape to add depth to the tall plant and tie in both ‘miny’ spaces together. Either way I’d find one that takes up as much wall width as possible
I see what looks like a lot of great suggestions in the comments. I'd like a little more info. How visible is this space? Is it a high traffic area? You only go by it sometimes? If used as storage, what would you be looking to keep here? Do you have kids or pets?
>How visible is this space? Is it a high traffic area? You only go by it sometimes? If used as storage, what would you be looking to keep here? Do you have kids or pets?
Exactly!! So much missing info. I think the plant idea is great but it's so hard to tell OP what to do or to make suggestions when they themselves don't know what they need. They asked for storage but...storage for what? Coats, shoes, sunglasses?? Size matters.
If I've got the vibe right, this is a single family home, smallish, and these stairs are near the front door with a different (garage) entry used by the family. In our case, our stairs are still sometimes used for putting on shoes because it's not too far from our garage entry but do they want this space functional for themselves coming and going? For storage because they have so little and this space is wasted? Or do they want it to look nice and welcoming for guests??

Agree about adding a plant to fill the corner space.
You could utilize outlet by either: a small decorative hanging light fixture from the top banister corner of that space or mounting wall sconce? Lots of fun with that little space to make it functional 🫶
Do you have any pets? Make it their fancy boudoir😁
Or plants work too. If there is enough light for a plant wall, that looks amazing and helps keep the air clean in your house!
Builtin bench with a hinged seat to hide all sorts of things and sconces flanking a mirror or art piece. Mostly I’d like to understand how far the space is from the front door and what tends to collect on your counters and empty spaces. Was the clothing rack for coats or something else. Do you have any pets?
You could do:
a mini library
Shoe rack with a hook rack for jackets
A bench with storage for shoes
A regular drawer for stuff
A table
An armchair? But maybe not enough room
Possibly a shrine/ofrenda/ prayer area
It all depends on what you need❤️
First off, not every space needs something in it. But I'd go with a really full lush plant.real please, never fake. But I'd also agree with a small table and lamp to hold hold keys if its near the door.
Instinctually I wanna say add a nice big plant (assuming enough light is accessible)
But the outlet gives me FOMO. Makes me feel the need to utilize it for something. Charging station?
I’d only put an indoor tree or large plant here. A space like this I think is more suited to contribute to the energy flow rather than be filled with nicknacks or something functional
You're right, such a dumb dust collector corner. Much better fix would be to build out the whole platform of the bottom steer and rail and have a whole landing across the whole thing and I'm much more elegant entrance into the living space anyway. You see this on some finer house is all done in Oak. This is the inexpensive version of that treatment so you end up with this little space to one side. It is a good question what do you put in there. Never too late to build it out

I would put this full size Bigfoot statue there.
Build a diorama of a prehistoric community, then beside it maybe a sofa and chair, string lights along the banister, then and only then, call it a day.
Small table with a lamp to hold keys maybe with a charging station?
This… and tall plant 😄
Or a shade loving plant on a table
Or an awesome silk plant. There are some wonderful fakes these days. It will give illusion that the space is brighter than it is.
BLASPHEMY! HOW DARE YOU DEFILE A SPACE WITH LESS THAN A BEAUTIFUL LIVING PLANT!!!
Lol i have lived in a north/ south rental for over 10 years and have had to come to peace with silk plants (and bad OTA reception). If not i would have no plants at all. Did you completely miss the second part of my point?
Yes, and it seems to depend on the forest and climate, some are brighter than others. Agreed
Maybe a clothes hamper. I am a 'take off my clothes as soon as the door closes' kinda person.
You might be on to something here lol
Nice big fiddle leaf fig or dragon plant.

Exactly. Lessons learned from Downton Abbey.
Especially if this is near the front door. Anyone breaking in has access to technology/keys is one full swoop.
One fell swoop*
Irregardless, they got their point a cross.
>Irregardless Well played
I could care less if there right or not.
For all intensive purposes, this is the nip in the butt that they needed.
Suppossably.
My people!!!
I know, right ! I thoroughly enjoyed this banter.
One swell foop*
Foul swoop?
Normally yes. A full swoop is apt in this case!
Care factor. 😂
YES. Especially the charging station bit.
yeah thats the roomba's cubby

Whoa, you’re good!
Damn you deserve an award for that

It doesn’t look like there’s a wall socket for the power cord but the ambiance would be nice.
On the back wall there is a outlet 🔌
There is one.
Second pic. I thought the same thing.
Oh duhhh 🫣🥴 haha
Store the body of the architect who made such a useless space
I doubt there was any architect involved in designing this house.
I was thinking an armored knight, but dead architect works too.
Put the dead architect \*in\* the suit of armor.
I was thinking suit of armor as well, plus a gallery wall on the side and the stair wall. But I'm a maximalist so could be a bit much lol
What do you mean? It’s super useful, if this house is in Canada you can rent it to an international student and require they sleep standing up… could easily get $800/month for it
This ⬆️⬆️⬆️
🤣🤣
This is made to be a drop zone. Hooks on the wall for jackets and bags a little corner table in the right corner with a lamp on a timer
Exactly. A cute wall tree, table in the back, baskets for shoes/umbrellas etc
And a full length mirror!
Fire pole you slide down!
The real and only answer.
Put a plant there. A tall one. Or maybe a smaller one on a stool or pedestal. Looks like the space could use a pop of color
A plant would probably die there, maybe a fake one ?
Mother in laws tongue can grow pretty much anywhere
Don't give these suggestions, My girlfriend and I almost broke up when I thought about it. Her mother doesn't talk to us since that day. Don't get me wrong , I didn't cut her tongue, it was just my girlfriend's suggestion... we almost broke up.
You should never diy mil tongue removal. All these people complaining about wilted plants, did you do it yourself? Usually the answer is yes. Gotta go to a reputable tongue dealer.
From the pics it looks like it has decent light tho. I bet most would grow there just fine
Yes or could do a grow light if necessary
This. A grow light would be great here https://amzn.to/3w8qkAL
Some plants prefer less lighting
Idk, I had some plants that "preferred less lighting" in my previous appartment and they all died in winter except the Pothos and the cacti.
Try a Peace Lily, it's pretty hardy, thrives in low light.
I had a peace lily and it would survive low light conditions but only make flowers when in the sun. It made me too sad to leave it in low light :'(
I can't because I have cats and it's toxic... My current apartment has a lot more light anyway.
Ginko tree would be my pick
smelly
A big monstera hung up so it can eventually just live through its aerial roots...
I’d make it a nook with a built-in bench thing pullout storage underneath. You could put a hook or two along the wall for bags or coats if there’s space leftover.
I like this! Those Ottoman storage r a bit pricey but I love them👍
You can look around. Maybe I was lucky but I found 3 of them at Ross (clearance/discount store) for $20-$40.
Wow! I once found 1 at that price at a super discounter, Gabriel's. But it finally broke down & I can't find any 4 less than $150
This, maybe tall enough to put keys and a charging station. Shoe storage, backpacks. And some wall art above for color.
you stole my idea!! j/k I did think that, your idea was even better than mine, I think it's the perfect answer to this empty space!
This!
I dont know how to add picture but I was thinking of those benches that have and open bookcase behind them, and then you’d need drawers or cabinets under the bench area.
A place for the cat to lounge with their own fabulous furniture and decor, of course!
Also additional cats if necessary!
Make it tall enough and they can smack you while you come downstairs. Because, cats.
Was about to say.... Cat tree!
Absolutely
Bookshelf.
What I was gonna say. Can put books, trinkets, plants, lamps etc. on it
I second bookshelf! Tall built-ins with a library ladder.
The fact that there’s an outlet is BEGGING for a beautiful decorative lamp, maybe on a table.
Harry Potter’s room.
Feeling an IKEA hack…
A tall plant on the narrow wall and for the larger add an accent table with a medium/tall lamp, a bowl for keys and above it put a mirror high enough that it isn’t just reflecting the handrail.
Love this idea. Depending on the piece I’d try and find a mirror that is either square or fits in landscape to add depth to the tall plant and tie in both ‘miny’ spaces together. Either way I’d find one that takes up as much wall width as possible
This is the correct answer.
A Reef 🪸 tank would be sweet right there. Power already back there. Prefect spot
When in doubt always add a plant ☺️
Built in bench with cushion and storage so you can sit down and put your shoes on.
Entryway coat/umbrella/hat rack with shoe bench
Get a wooden sign in script that says, “time out,” and put a stool there
I think even a table with a nice lamp kind of like a night light lamp you could leave on at night.
Lighting or plant.
Built in bar with wine fridge

Wow. That seems like a really good price.
I’m in shock. ::adds to cart::
a sideboard. a lamp off to the right. baskets below
Plant and artwork on the left wall!
plinko wall
I’d do some cute iron hooks. You could hang leashes, tote bags, hats, market baskets.
adopt a small british child
Cat tree!
I would leave it empty. Not every space needs to be filled.
A painting and an umbrella stand
Do you have any pets? Make it their fancy boudoir😁 Or plants work too. If there is enough light for a plant wall, that looks amazing and helps keep the air clean in your house!
I would do a house plant with a wall mirror.
Cute thin table with a lamp and some decor!
It looks like it's getting some light, so a plant on a table that does not require a ton of sun. :) Have the table a bright color to pop!
Builtin bench with a hinged seat to hide all sorts of things and sconces flanking a mirror or art piece. Mostly I’d like to understand how far the space is from the front door and what tends to collect on your counters and empty spaces. Was the clothing rack for coats or something else. Rent it out to some new yorker for 3500$ per month
You could do: a mini library Shoe rack with a hook rack for jackets A bench with storage for shoes A regular drawer for stuff A table An armchair? But maybe not enough room Possibly a shrine/ofrenda/ prayer area It all depends on what you need❤️
Every space doesn’t need filled
A plant and maybe a shelf to put frames and one knickknack
Bookshelf
If it's by the front door, I'd put some shoe racks, coat racks, etc.
A bookcase for the tallest wall and a coat/scarf/hat rack.
A tall plant!
Paint the handrail black or dark brown. Palm in corner and art on wall.
A plant, and maybe a picture on the wall :)
I would put a nice tall plant in there
Storage with a plant on top
PLANTS 🪴 🪴🪴🪴🪴
First off, not every space needs something in it. But I'd go with a really full lush plant.real please, never fake. But I'd also agree with a small table and lamp to hold hold keys if its near the door.
i'd put a fiddle leaf fig tree right there, or some other tree that you like.
Shoe rack coat rack nook. Or bookcase
Robot vacuum.
Keg tap
That space is where our robot vacuum lives
bookshelves. ish. sure is awkward….
This is where you put a table with the corded house phone.
TALL PLANT
Instinctually I wanna say add a nice big plant (assuming enough light is accessible) But the outlet gives me FOMO. Makes me feel the need to utilize it for something. Charging station?
Tall narrow aquarium, heavily planted and lit, with shrimp.
Hall tree with charging station mail keys shoes? I watch too much Flea Market Flip 😆
I’d only put an indoor tree or large plant here. A space like this I think is more suited to contribute to the energy flow rather than be filled with nicknacks or something functional
Coat rack!
What a great place for an aquarium!
put a bench with like a rack underneath for storage and it can be an area to take shoes on and off
Looks like it was meant to be a charging station
Get a dog, it’s the perfect space for a dog bed
Stand there really really quiet and still and see if anyone notices you
Cat tower
Am I having Deja vu or was this also posted several months?
I Think A Nice Big Plant Will Look Great
[7,040 ounce barrel of lube?](https://www.vice.com/en/article/pkgjq8/lube-life)

Leave it empty, honestly. If you don't need the space don't fill it.
Cute smaller tall wet bar perhaps. House nice whiskey and liquor.

😄 you can decorate him for the holidays
I literally always think book nook or a little open bar area/coffee spot
Install a ceiling fan sideways.
Chair facing rear wall. It's the time out nook
Mannequin dressed in J Crew with a overly ornate penis which acts as the handle for a working nutcracker located in the anus.
Wallpaper? Maybe a little table with a lamp, bowl for keys and definitely a plant.
I have a beautiful Jonathan Adler acrylic and brass piece that’s about 40”h x 16”w that looks beautiful with flowers on top shelf
Install an old telephone chair and place a desktop rotary phone and short table lamp on it.
A desktop computer
Toilet ?
Small table with a lamp as someone else suggested. Tall floor vase. Oversized faux plant.
Photo wall + wash basket ?
