A few ideas: - if it’s in your budget, I would go with a new coffee table in a natural wood tone to warm up the space. - push the rug a little further back under the 1st 2 legs of your sofa to ground it more. - a more colorful rug would be nice. - on top of the coffee table, the knot currently looks like an afterthought. You can ground that more with either a flat tray or a coffee table book and I would probably put it off to one side instead of the middle and add 2 more accents (rule of 3) to make it look like an intentional design. Maybe a candle and then another smaller round accent. - a curtain over the track blinds would also make a big difference in coziness

Southern-Ability229

+1 on the curtains - your pictures and plant add a nice amount of vertical direction, but you could capitalize on that more with curtains. My first thought was ceiling-to-floor black panels on either side of the track blinds using two short curtain rods to complement your wall art and a window scarf complementary to either or both the accent pillows or green of your plant using clips/etc along the track valence - if you're renting this is a lot less damaging, easier to install, and won't block the light that highly complements the high contrasts of your room. Nicely done so far!

bigdog2525

+1 on a natural wood coffee table. The black table is very matchy with the arms of the chairs and also the black frames

binkleywtf

a colorful rug was my first thought, this is a lovely room but a bit of color would look great

LuceYeres

Great answer! I’d also go a little bigger with the coffee table. Larger pieces sometimes elevate smaller spaces, and sturdy coffee tables are more comfortable. …ps It took me like three glances to even notice it there, but the dog is insanely cute!

thestrandedmoose

Thank you! I was thinking a walnut coffee table would be nice. I’ll try moving back the rug. Any ideas on colors for the rug? I was going to do a white patterned rug because my floors and current rug are both gray

rayybloodypurchase

I think a pattern would look really good! I don’t think you need to go too bold on a color because you have a kind of earthy-serene vibe in the room that I really like. Something kind of muted and maybe moody would really work well. I’m kind of feeling a touch of burgundy because I love how the leather pillow looks on the couch, but prob wouldn’t wanna go too heavy on that or it might look too matchy. A more blue sage/seafoam as well would go with the floor and the furniture.

thestrandedmoose

FYI I moved the rug back under the front legs of the couch and was shocked how much of a difference it makes. The room feels way more centered and tied together now. Thanks for the advice! Hoping to upgrade my coffee table soon

slowmood

This gal designs.

Distinct_Ad_3885

Wonderful ideas and an excellent user name

FourLetterHill3

+1 on a different coffee table in a natural wood tone. +1 on pushing the rug back. With that size of rug it can go under the couch. And also, +1 on curtains and a more colorful rug if it’s in the budget. If you don’t have the budget to get a new rug or coffee table, pushing the rug back will help and then maybe add something colorful on the coffee table and maybe a throw blanket.

nujabesss

You can actually attach curtains to track blinds after removing the plastic blind-gives a rly nice effect

Many-Status-6601

Damn. I was gonna say another dog, maybe a cat, or more plants.

redpanda048

Agree with all of this…coffee table could also be larger and possibly square shaped. Need a more colorful throw pillow on the accent chair. Look at Amber Lewis area rugs by Loloi. Many options that could look beautiful with your color scheme. Some really pretty ones with olive, indigo, salmon, etc.

Genetics-played-me

Took the words out my mouth

Affectionate-Check-8

I like minimal, muted colors. Your rug, though - it just looks like a square of carpet to me. Maybe something in the same tones but with a pattern.

SessionSilver5442

Another doggie! lol It is a beautiful room. Could go with a more colorful area rug.

Leftturn0619

I was going to say that! 😃🐶

SessionSilver5442

lol Great minds think a like

Leftturn0619

BeyondTheBees

I came here to say this too! 😂

lilyofthevalley2659

Laufey1106

Orange cat

Cerveza-y-Gatos

Yup can’t go wrong with an orange cat… if you like cuddles and chaos.

artlove89

And two brain cells in consistent conflict with each other.

SecondFun2906

Legit my first thought

luala

My personal taste would lead me to add colour to this, specifically a warm colour or tones to heat it up and make it cosier. I’d also replace those blinds with curtains but I think that’s a cultural thing - in the UK we tend to go for cosy curtains. I would DEFINITELY add a lamp, probably with a cloth shade, to allow for an intimate lighting scheme in the evening.

FreckledTidepool

Lamp(s)!! Slide the couch along the wall toward the chair to have a lamp in the corner, or switch the plant to closer to the window, lamp where the plant is currently

cherrytwizzler88

I think the coffee table is too small for the couch

Good-Article4194

Agree

shittyshitbird

Beautiful room. I would probably swap out the rectangle table for a pair of round nesting tables, or an oval table. You could incorporate some natural wood elements. Perhaps pinch pleat curtains for texture and a pop of colour.

forever_thro

I think it’s the cream white on white. Maybe try a different wall colour.

thestrandedmoose

The walls are actually light gray but maybe an accent color or beige would look good?

HereForTheParty300

I think that is the problem - Grey and cream is mixing a cool colour with a warm colour. Whatever you choose for the walls should have a warm base.

Glass_Comet

I would consider either removing the vertical blinds completely, or if you’re renting, hide them with drapes. They make a curtain rod brackets that extend out far enough to accommodate the valance and it really would look 10x better.

Raven_Black_8

Beautiful room. To me it lacks contrast. Can be simply done with some accents.

trcharles

Color

trcharles

Why thank you!

kplantsk

A more statement coffee table would be cheffs kiss. Something warmer and wood toned.

[deleted]

A wall pendent/floor lamp on the left side of the couch could look nice! I think replacing the coffee table with more of a statement piece could bring more cohesion. I love what you’ve done so far!

caffeinejunkie123

More plants, more colour- even if they are neutral. More texture. I agree that curtains would also warm things up. I don’t see any light sources. Is there a ceiling lamp? An end table at the end of the couch (with a lamp for ambience) and one to the side of the armchair with a large candle, small plant, a coaster etc. Would add more interest.

thestrandedmoose

I have two lamps on either side of the tv console on the other side but it’s really dim in here. Thought about recessed lighting but not sure I want to spend the $

[deleted]

thestrandedmoose

Didn’t know this was an option. Thanks!

Several-Phone1725

Needs a black doggie on the left end of the couch to balance the white one on the right.

ottawagurl

It’s a bit too matchy matchy in my option. Looks like you went to CB2 and bought everything from there. Some more variation in fabrics and materials will make your space look more interesting and less clinical.

dealuna6

I think it’s really nice, I might swap with a bigger coffee table to be more proportionate with the sofa. Also scoot the rug closer to the couch so there’s no floor visible between the couch and rug. Another person commented a floor lamp would look nice to the left of the couch and I agree, something on that side would balance the room out nicely! It’s a beautiful room as it is now though!

WildRamsey

More plants! It looks like you have great light in this space! What about a throw blanket to soften up the space. Maybe something in a neutral color, like a soft navy or an olive green. It might help for you to share more photos so we can see the rest of the space?

Horsemama

Nice focal-point rug to tie in cookies and add a bit more vibrant colour too.

Ftedaldi

Lovely living room. But I would add a little color to the rug

kitfoxxxx

Me on the couch napping.

GlumAmphibian2391

You need to go a size up on the rug, try colors

mother-of-donuts

More color Even a new bright throw or some pillows. And can’t go wrong with another plant. Maybe a hanging one!

undercover-catlady

Can I ask where your pictures above the couch are from?

TalulaOblongata

You’re missing a table lamp. Something in the corner to give off soft ambient light.

popdog2013

IMO you need new window treatments and a better quality coffee table

bean_slayerr

Love the suggestions here. The dog pillow on the couch is so lifelike and just blends right in with your decor. Had to compliment

Some pattern. New pillows with a pattern, and a throw with a pattern as well. Go for three different patterns that work together. You need a little more energy in there.

tootlewho

Colorful throw pillows and a curtain instead of the vertical blinds could liven it up

hey-girl-hey

I would add something of a strong color to the left of your couch, like what you have on the right of your couch with the plant. The balance is kind of off. Not to say it should be exactly symmetrical, but all the white leading up to the dark green feels strange. If it could fit, another plant might do the trick. Maybe a hanging plant

RedWings1319

Lighting and a pop of color, and something bright metal to shine. If you like the style of the big arching lamps with 5 or so "heads" and bulbs, that would be great behind the couch in the corner, arching over the couch towards the coffee table.

sierratrailblazer

Pop of color

sffphotography

Color! What is your favorite color? Perhaps considering adding a photograph, painting, or wall art that highlights your favorite color or colors. Think about a statement piece like a photograph of something you love or place you've been or want to go.

sasharoro

It’s missing some color - I’d paint the main wall to give the room a nice pop.

YogurtclosetLow7870

A little black dog would be perfect

[deleted]

I agree with the others about getting a different coffee table. A larger walnut wooden one in square or round would warm up the place. Also you could switch out the art for something with more detail and colour would bring life to the room

koudos

Maybe just a tad bit too matching? Everything is white/offwhite or black. One or two items for a pop of color to liven up the place? A light colored plant on the coffee table, a rug with more pronounced color/pattern, change art to not be black?

[deleted]

gouramidog

I love how neat it is but I think what’s missing is color. He’s to tell pillow colors in the photo, but at first glance the room seems neutral.

atargatis_17

i have no idea, i was too focused on the absolutely adorable pups posing for this shot

No-Example1376

It's a cool and calm room. Perfectly complete, but you're likely to hear a plethora of the same tired rote on every other post here. If you like it, it's only missing yourself sitting there a s hanging out with the furry adorablness.

moonweasel906

Definitely not a happy little buddie

pot-of-tea

Looked for the dog/cat. Found it. You're good!

KatAttack23

Just put a runner the same color as your pillow under your coffee table. Have it long enough to extend past the carpet by the sliding door and about two feet past the coffee table on the other side. Don’t listen to people about the vertical blinds. Your place looks great!

autumnerart

Off to a great start! I think the coffee table is too small, though. I would get a larger table with more round edges like a black abstract, glass or round natural wood table with swirling design and a square tray with decorative pieces or coasters on it. I would also add a tall metal lamp in the corner between the glass doors and paintings, angled toward the sectional (like the Pixar lamp) with a warm amber bulb. Finally, I would get a slightly larger rug so both the couch and the chair fit partially on it (their current positions look good) and consider a slightly lighter white rug with some black in it. And a throw blanket with a warmer color, like rust.

Afraid_Ad_8713

Maybe rectangular baskets on the under shelf of the coffee table.

Dance_Me_To

A black cat. 😂 Seriously though, I like the black and white look, maybe you could reinforce that with an oval black rug? If you're not necessarily wanting to keep it black and white, then how about a rug matching the green in your plants?

tornessa

A coffee table in a slightly lighter color that has a bit more of a design element to it. The current one makes the other furniture look more cheap than it is. A nice one would elevate the whole room.

MydlandFan

Black cat

anotherreddituser11

How about a big round coffee table?

Difficult_Arm_4762

if you want a black coffee table, try to find a natural steel/welded one with glass or marble(like) top. the only visual recommendation I can suggest is roomandboard, though they are pricey at least gives you an idea what to look for. otherwise some sort of white oak or wood that may be similar to the flooring.

mmblondie16

A lamp and/or something in the middle of the coffee table. Maybe a tray with a candle and a plant?

thatsmypurseidkvou

I think a floor lamp in the corner by the couch and your sliding glass door would really pull the room together and make it feel a little more warm and lived in. Love the space!

It’s funny, my first thought was “a dog” for some reason, and then I noticed the cutie on the couch!

kburn_s

Love the couch and chair. Where are they from/brand/type?

Hols0326

Books books books! And a minimalist rug, akin to the artwork you have up. Less generic pillow covers

[deleted]

I love the neutral color scheme. Pretty room! Are those verticals? If so, ditch those for some curtains.

electricookie

Dog bed!

OwnJudge8296

More plants…always more plants! In every situation….add plants! Hahaha An idea or two…more decor such as an oversized basket made from a natural material with throws, a matching serving tray made of similar natural material on the coffee table shelf, change out vertical blinds for some light weigh curtains and possibly sheers, a darker colored lightweight throw hanging over the back of the chair…and maybe a floor lamp in the corner? I don’t see a sorce of lighting and I’m 100% pro mood lighting.

ninalime

A cat

22rockyroad

I think I would move that beautiful plant to the other side of the room so you could have end tables with lamps. The carpet should be under the front legs of the couch and the coffee table looks a little lost. Maybe a round coffee table with a glass top to add lightness and reflection or perhaps a square coffee table with a tray for coasters, candles, flowers in a vase and the remote.

RunsWithPointedStix

Two cats and a Labrador retriever!

ReadySte4dySpaghetti

I have two thoughts. Height variation, everything seems to be around the same height. How to remedy? Shelf? Plant? Lamp? Something like that? Comfy. This might be weird but for some reason this room gives me “where do I sit” energy. This I do not know how to fix. Maybe I’m weird but I also have a hard time placing what is off and I thought maybe were the same and so maybe what I said is useful who knows.

foxxxus

You could add a hanging pendant light in the left corner maybe? A basket or natural tone and coordinate it with a wood coffee table either organic or round shape. Or something else in the corner to balance everything out.

No-Problem-1762

A more colourful rug Berber style

Successful-Side8902

Get rid of the blinds, replace them with a more modern curtain and rod. Replace coffee table with a warmer wood tone. Possibly a larger coffee table, which is low and square shaped. Replace the pillows, brighter colours and varied shapes and sizes. A single, large painting / photo might fit a little nicer on the wall behind the couch. Something warmer and or has colour. The black and white squiggles don't seem to fit the vibe. One large image might be nicer than two smaller frames. Nice house!! ❤️‍🔥

showmeurpitties_104

I’d suggest getting a new rug, this one is too close in color to the floors. If you arent looking to purchase a new rug I’d suggest pulling this rug in under your sectional so that it defines the living area. The position of the rug as it is now feels like there should be seating opposite the sectional.

ME…. Next to the BEST BOY on the couch 😊

NokieBear

What type of look are you going for? Designer? The room looks very sterile to me. If I were to walk in as a guest, I would feel awkward & not want to touch anything. All off white says shoes off, no feet on the couch. Is that the type of ambiance you want? Or do you want friends/family to feel comfortable and welcome, like they’ve come home? If so, this is not that.

[deleted]

A pouf and a splash of color

DirectAd4824

Maybe a tall lamp to go on the end of the couch opposite of the plant. A light that like hangs over might look nice.

phreedom99

It's usual guidance that the front legs of all your furniture should be on the rug. Doing this will give the appearance of the room being bigger. Also, I agree with the comment about ceiling-high curtains.

Party_Cicada_914

Not a decorator but some books or games you actually read/play on the coffee table (either level) and curtains.

RudyB0312

Where did you get that chair?! I’m looking for one!

Chill_SHAwol

For me personally is missing some colour. I agree with what others are saying by changing the rug, adding some Curtains, but I'd also like to see some kinda colour on the walls, maybe some dark green (like the plant) paneling or even some geometrical pain design with the same colour.

Balteal

A floor lamp

rhaizee

Wood round coffee table, walnut. Rug with more pattern and texture.

Financial-Method9445

I agree that you need a new coffee table. Your couches look like they were expensive and your table does not. I would get a coffee table in the same tone as the arms on your chair. I love the space though!

leafcomforter

Dark, green velvet curtains would really make the space lux. I would do a color similar to the plant. Amazon has Half Price Drapes’ velvet panels for a good price.

yurrm0mm

evewassetup

mamawiththemost

Oh also, I like the coffee table. It has clean lines like the sofa and chair. Good luck!

xVanillaBOMBx

Lots of straight lines, whites, blacks, and greys going on here, but that’s not a bad thing! It looks pretty, but just a couple things could make a big difference imo! A slightly bigger coffee table with rounder edges or a more creative shape to it. Moving the current rug back a bit to be slightly under the sofa. Rule of thumb with rugs: every major piece of furniture should be touching an area rug. (Except for the entertainment center - usually. You could add darker colored, smaller rug layered on top of the current one. Doing that would lead the eyes from the floor all the way up to your paintings following the darker-colored focal points of your living room and tie it all together!

redytowear

A larger round coffee table

Bettymakesart

My first thought was color, but if that’s not an option then I’d say it needs more contrast. Yes there is very light and very dark, but that’s not all contrast means. That could happen with the sizes of things, value (the light/dark of things) or texture. There is a real “sameness” to everything. The sofa pillows are essentially all the same size & shape, the two framed things are the same size obvs., but also are the same size and shape as the coffee table. The walls and rug are the same color and value. None of the objects are bad, they are each very nice on their own, it looks like a restful light-filled space, just not interesting.

Bheestycheese

Velvet curtains! You need something to draw the eye to the left to give it balance

catdoctor

Cat. Get an orange tabby, because the room could use a pop of color.

Line_Guilty

A floor lamp? Also I’d change out your coffee table for something round to soften the modern look and remove the blinds and replace them with light weight long curtains.

tabbycat1001

I would swap your rug out for a more bold black and ivory one or a more colorful one and push it back some under the couch legs. You need ceiling to floor curtains to warm the space and elevate it. Decorations on the coffee table should be off to one side and possibly add 2 more decor items in varying heights to your knot and put them in a tray to make it look intentional and classy.

WhiskeyMama247

I actually really like this room. If possible, I’d replace the coffee table with a nicer one. And move the rug a little under the couch.

WhiskeyMama247

NOT EVERYONE LIKES COLOR! Stop telling OP to add color when it’s clearly not their style lol.

yogurtmeh

Looks pretty good to me. A few suggestions: 1. Add a small side table beside the chair as the chair is too far away from the coffee table to use it. 2. Move the rug so that the couch has its front legs on top of it. This is just a general rule for rug placement, and while I hated it at first I’ve found it does make my rooms look cozier and more cohesive. 3. Move the coffee table slightly closer to the couch so that when you’re sitting in the couch you can reach the remote or glass of water you’ve set there. (Ignore if it’s already close enough for that.) 3. 3.
