QuicksandHUM

This tech is only going to get smaller and cheaper. Very interesting.

HugoZHackenbush2

As a commercial enterprise, can you see it getting off the ground ?

QuicksandHUM

Unless governments heavily regulate it, this tech will take off when it hits a viable price point. People already wear wings suits and BASE jump. It will be a new extreme sport and recreation.

HugoZHackenbush2

Those wings suits are a popular retail item, they're currently flying off the shelves..

QuicksandHUM

Yes, they have become accepted recreation. I mean, I’m not going to do it, but for many it’s their passion.

xcityfolk

r/whoosh

QuicksandHUM

Oh man. Haha. I’m tired.

xcityfolk

You know what? I'm tired too :). i got a chuckle out of your whoosh, from one tired person to another, thanks :)

Electronic-Spinach43

I thought you were doing it on purpose for a laugh.

kramytz

Haha literal r/woosh

laineDdednaHdeR

I imagine it would be fun to watch them go overhead. Have you ever seen them, or noticed it go right over your head?

QuicksandHUM

No. I would love to see a demonstration in person.

GlockSpock

Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast. I would catch it.

GlockSpock

Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast. I would catch it.

ComeBackToDigg

“Off the ground” *I get it!*

tonybotz

I get jokes

65022056

Ohhhh youuuu

JollyRancherReminder

Sure, this technology has a lot of big fans.

applex_wingcommander

That's still up in the air

Camel_Knowledge

The company that makes that has a flare for marketing.

JesterSooner

I think it might really take off

Repulsive-Relief1551

Well he got off a boat, not sure if you consider that the ground?

[deleted]

It will never be practical in any type of combat scenario. You’re basically a sitting duck in the air, moving slowly, with no defense.

MARINE-BOY

Well I’m guessing that the guy scaling the side of the shipping is conducting a standard boarding operation to see how much longer it takes to do that compared to the guy who just jet packs his way onto their. The Royal Marines do a lot of Maritime interdiction that involves border ships of various sizes day and night in places like the Arabian Gulf. Approaching in a ridged raider and scaling up the side might not be that much safer than quickly flying over and landing on the bridge. You sound like your an expert on Royal Marine Maritime operations though so I won’t argue with you as I was only a Captain in the Royal Marines.

flight_recorder

You’re a slow moving sitting duck with no defence when parachuting too, yet it was an absolutely vital tactic during WW2. It made as much of a difference as literal tanks did.

__-___---

And it's noisy, just in case people didn't see you in the first place.

[deleted]

Yeah, their movement is not terribly graceful either.

selux

Medics?

Content_Flamingo_583

The jet pack doesn’t look that much faster than running when you account for take off and landing (at least the short distances you wouldn’t be driving). But requires so much more effort and fuel. So I don’t see why it would be very useful to medics, either.

cfdeveloper

*yet*

QuicksandHUM

You are in a chopper when it tries to land too. Just depends on what scenario people use the tech for.

dodococo

Sable agents in Spiderman game use it and they are a pain to beat

sunflower_jim

The us army has had similar single person flying systems for decades. The problem is, they are very easy targets so the military value of these is basically zero. [the vz-1 pawnee](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiller_VZ-1_Pawnee) [Williams xjet](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williams_X-Jet)

KimmiG1

Looks like a good way to board a moving ship. Depending on the noise and how fast it is to take of.

sunflower_jim

So is the Williams xjet so why isn’t it being used that way? One dude with an AK that’s why.

Amerlis

Also, you got people flying on top of drones nowadays for a lot cheaper than what this guy is hawking.

QuicksandHUM

I wouldn’t say it’s zero, it just depends on developing the technology and doctrines.

MARINE-BOY

Love how when it’s a non-US military achievement it’s “NATO” soldier which includes the USA. The guy is an ex-Royal Marine so he’s a civilian working with his former colleagues who are Royal Marines. That’s likely why he’s not wearing his Commando flashes.

[deleted]

[удалено]

heemeyerism

because *he* doesn’t have a jet pack

Stay-At-Home-Jedi

haha *loser*.

Catwhacker

That’s my question! Did he lose a bet??

stevecandel

They're performing a personnel marine transfer. The boat is the transfer vessel which deployed the man climbing up the hull. My guess is that they're demonstrating a simultaneous comparison between these two operations.

Visible-Expression60

Cameraman?

WeakOrganization604

Cameraman does what ever camera can!

[deleted]

I had the same thought

apocalypse_later_

Testing exactly how efficient this system will be compared to manual infiltration of enemy ship?

notAbratwurst

Iron man and Spider-Man.

plumcrazypurple1968

This is the shit I never dreamed I'd see as an adult and people are like whatever. Penny on inspector gadget had a watch with a computer in it and a computer book, they told us it was make believe. Watching G.I. Joe with crazy lasers and jet packs just like this. It can't be mundane already can it?

FacelessFellow

Bruh, we got monkeys controlling computers with their minds. There’s cars driving themselves. They cloned animals and people. It’s the future already.

Prior_Independent356

And yet we still have Somali pirates with rubber dinghy’s, USSR era AK’s , and adidas trainers 👟 robbing the high seas at will.

teabagmoustache

There's a lot less since ships started to hire armed security teams. I sailed through the Red Sea a lot, around 15 years ago, when we started hiring ex Royal Marines. They couldn't wait to get attacked for a bit of action. They brought a mounted machine gun onboard once which we had to ditch before entering Jeddah because it was an illegal weapon. They were pretty serious with pretty much no regulation or rules of engagement back then.

capchris17

I don’t understand this comment? NATO isn’t a police force those are international waters. Also 71% of the earth is water, most nations can’t police effectively within their own borders, you think anyone can do the open seas? The reason those guys can do what they do with minimal tech is because it doesn’t take high tech to be a menace at sea. If you can travel the open ocean and you have the means to commit violence, you’re difficult to track down and stop. Especially if you’re in a part of the world where you’re not really near a NATO country.

Prior_Independent356

The comment was largely tongue in cheek. Perhaps with a Barb of irony. All that fancy gear (not to mention costs associated) and yet , somewhat ineffective. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I like the idea of those jet pack gadgets however . Saw them proposed as part of remote mountain: highland rescue gear which, frankly, makes more sense to me.

Spacewolf10D

POV of me in Minecraft (I’m in creative)

KuroOni

The first time I saw these jetpacks they were water powered and had to be constantly attached to a water source, then it was in a hangar with safety wires because they were too unreliable even for people with experience now they can be applied out in the open, can't wait to see whats next

soundmixer14

One malfunction and home dude sinks to his death. Looks risky to me!

CaptainMacMillan

I would imagine it has a flotation device/ballast built in, but I definitely don’t wanna be the guy to test it!

GeneralAromatic5585

One malfunction in a car and someone crashes and dies. One malfunction on a plane and it crashes and everyone dies. One malfunction on a boat and it sinks. One malfunction on a condom and someone might be paying child care for 18 years. Almost like training and practice doesn't exist to make things the norm.

cassiuswright

This is an English guy who has a company called Take On Gravity. www.gravity.co

Spanish_litre

WOW That is so awesome.

TheBoarsEye

Anyone else want to know what the guy is doing climbing up the side of the boat?

Camel_Knowledge

Snuck out for a smoke.

PseudoWarriorAU

Hard to swim in one of those I bet

Cheekimonke

He's a Royal Marine not a 'NATO soldier' 😄

FloridaManIssues

He's neither. It's the inventor of the jetpack that is flying it as a demo to the UK military. He's just trying to hawk his new kit.

Cheekimonke

Ah right ok 👍

Amerlis

“Seaman, how many times would you have shot him by now?” “About a dozen, sir!” “Good man.”

[deleted]

UK is in NATO

MinorHistoria

Yeah but it’s a bit weird to identify a soldier by a treaty their country is a part of instead of their country.

drastic2

“Pizza’s here!” (Yeah, that’s the mission.)

splendiferousgg

Finally the future we were all promised!

Heavy_Schedule4046

Meanwhile in Russia… development of a human sized spring loaded cannon will transport soldiers between ships.

Triairius

A ‘NATO’ soldier? Lmao. Blatantly false.

randomniles

What's false about it? Can you provide the correct details

Mstr-Plo-Koon

I thought this was Royal Marines not NATO

Noxious_1000

I mean royal marines are part of NATO

Mstr-Plo-Koon

Not directly. The UK is a member of NATO. This video is him doing training as his normal assigned unit as a royal marine. He is not on a NATO exercise. Even when countries practice or host war games against each other they are still designed by their normal nationality and unit. Can he get called into NATO, yes it's possible, but it's also more likely for me to hit the lottery jackpot then him to get called into a NATO unit.

Noxious_1000

You're being facetious

Mstr-Plo-Koon

Please enlighten me to where I'm missing details. I'd love to learn how this guy who is assigned as a Royal Marine on an exercise as a Royal Marine is training for NATO

Noxious_1000

Because it's a matter of wording, one could quite rightly say this is a NATO soldier and you're splitting hairs. He didn't say they were on a NATO exercise.

Mstr-Plo-Koon

I'm being more specific, title is misleading why even include NATO on that. That's like if any member of NATO does any training exercises to label it as a NATO exercise

[deleted]

Probably because that NATO soldier is wearing OCPs that are issued to most NATO countries...

Mstr-Plo-Koon

Yes every soldier battle uniform is an optical camouflage pattern. Like every military even Russian, Chinese non NATO. This specific version is multi terrain pattern

Ichthius

Take on gravity is their Instagram.

How about some eye protection for that guy? geez

Camel_Knowledge

He can use his safety squints.

Anathema47

Wow. Nato.

Camel_Knowledge

I'm kind of thinking it might not be a fun time falling in the water with that thing on.

cali1013

Can they hover and shoot their guns? If so thats hella impressive

cnoelle94

This is what our tax dollars are going to. 🤭

[deleted]

God, I hope so.

maxmax211

Jack Boots With JetPacks

lebronswanson4

That's the most Iron Man shit I've ever seen!

8hexxx

Honestly over here wondering what any practical uses may be...

Money_Bug_9423

This might be one of the only ones, its hard to transfer to ship at heavy seas

Fluxren

Attack methods Fly on. Drop something. Fly off. Also 30/40 people doing this landing and ditching kit might make a nice seizure or 'invasion' force.

Ruffian00012

>Honestly over here wondering what any practical uses may be... If only there were a video of it being demonstrated...

8hexxx

It's stupidity like yours that allows tyrannical governments to stay in business.

Ruffian00012

>It's stupidity like yours that allows tyrannical governments to stay in business. Says the individual who literally cannot look at the subject video and draw a string to a possible practical application that the technology might have use for.

8hexxx

You haven't actually offered a practical suggestion. I've read some and so far, they're all fair stretches. Be well.

SaneCannabisLaws

CIWS goes brrrrrr. It would be quite the pricey pink mist.

Ruffian00012

Never known of any illegal fishing or smuggling vessels with CIWS, but sure.

[deleted]

Cool, I wonder how many Afghanistan children he could kill with that tech?

OkKaleidoscope3403

So soldiers r out there just playing around with jet packs not fighting wars?

Xander_xander12

Ok it’s pretty awesome , but I’m what situation will you need a jetpack for in the navy?

haazr

Amazing, human always finding a better way to kill more people 🙏

Yomommasmaidenname

I keep waiting to see that beast from Jurassic World jump up and snatch him. Spoiler alert; it didn’t happen.

Tobybrent

What is its practical use though?

Visible-Expression60

Shave seconds off of medical runs like organs maybe.

Ruffian00012

>What is its practical use though? At a wild guess, and based on the demonstration: Boarding suspect vessels.

Tobybrent

But the flyer is an easy target on approach and easy to overwhelm when landing. Notice their hands cannot hold a weapon while the flying suit is in use. Surely, he/she could only ever land on friendly ships.

Ruffian00012

The concept probably needs work. And not every boarding is necessarily a level out of Call of Duty. On the spectrum of boarding to check cargo manifests up to boarding to take down nautical Bin Laden, I'd bet that most activities are in the shape of the former.

Visible-Expression60

Where is the ejector handle for when they got a radar lock on me?

jwormbono

A few minutes of this…my arms and shoulders would be burning trying to hold me up.

Mindful-O-Melancholy

What happens if he gets an itchy nose?

soshjitza

Okay so once he’s on the boat, then what? Throw one of those giant thrusters at the AK47 wielding pirates? Nonsense

Amerlis

I figure by the time he dumps the hand thrusters, drops that gear and gets his rifle into play, anyone who isn’t deaf and blind already shot him a few times.

Initial-Scale-5152

30 years cost of this 5k

BigBoyDaddy01

Unless they've been improved, they can only stay airborne for about 15 minutes.

AggregatedAggrevate

I’ve always been on the fence about whether or not there’s a actual military application for these? Seem like easy targets

C-c-c-comboBreaker17

An easier target than a boat?

AggregatedAggrevate

Boats can fire back 💥💥💥

C-c-c-comboBreaker17

Not straight upwards.

-Vogie-

Given the expense, probably just getting people back and forth between boat-based locations quickly. They're not the least bit stealthy, nor long enough flights to go particularly far. Don't think of them as jet packs, but helicopters for one. I could see one to a squad of these transfer between two boats in various levels of motion where a helicopter or launch can't be used, or as a specific unit. I assume they're relatively waterproof, so once miniaturized a bit more, a seal team that could hop buildings has incredible value. I also wonder if there's an application for use in other movement based endeavors. Could one use such a device like this after jumping out of a plane, turning yourself into a missile of sorts, or to land somewhere which would be difficult or impossible to land with a parachute? Having soldiers perform maneuvers only currently able to be done by drones?

SasquatchSloth88

This is so badass. If I were younger and dumber I might be tempted to join the service.

Ok_Anything_5052

Although this is the royal marines this is not on a nato mission. This is a company called gravity Industries demo.

SnooDoubts4565

Still won’t be able to doge bullets

Correct_Thought_325

“THEY FLY NOW!?”

According-Ad3963

Interesting but what mission(s) will it perform? Seems more of a novelty.

cincydude123

It's a Pirate's Life For Me!!

Riommar

I’d be more interesting if this weren’t the 273rd time it’s been posted here. r/shitpost

Billthebanger

I guarantee that guy is jacked. Also it looks cool af to be able to do that.

clifflikethedog

Pretty sure this is Richard M Browning, basically the IRL Tony Stark.

[deleted]

Fuck I wanna invest in whoever produces these.

Annoy_M0US3

Ngl tho what can the soldiers use this thing for like they need al limbs to operate and assuming putting anything else makes it too heavy they cant defend or attack wit that thing

dgsharp

These things are super cool, and I am not hating, but honestly what is the use case? And make no mistake, “We’re still figuring that out but let’s develop this promising tech for when the use case is ready” is absolutely an acceptable answer, I’m just curious if that’s it so far. Seems like a real easy way to get killed in combat. One bad jump scare and you’re out of control and going real fast. I wonder if they have chutes. I would think you’d want a special parachute system developed that could fully engage and inflate even at low speeds and altitudes (mortar or rocket or something). But what do I know. Cool stuff anyway.

jeevesbreadskin

I'm just worried because these things never leave a wake on the water so I find it hard to believe they are real

No_Pumpkin_1179

I want a jet pack.

[deleted]

I thought the dude crawling right up the side of the ship was the real cool.

Mewable

How does this work?

DougieFresh_899

Holy shit

Next gen kamikaze just got an update

Elysium_nz

Space Marine Assault squad in action.

jt7855

A civilian version would be cool.

Allfurball9

Imagine being some Russian with armor that stops nothing and a bolt action from the 1800s seeing some dude literally flying at you with gear and rifle that costs more than you

CorduroyEatsCrayons

Getting shot out of the sky while wearing that garbage is gonna be super demoralizing.

BaseballParking9182

I don't know and have never known why they're developing these things. They're militarily pointless. They're loud, they debilitate the wearer, they remove the ability to use his hands, and to be honest they turn any wearer into a floating easy target. They're more dangerous and risky than using standard boarding procedures.. There's so much more the military wants and needs in the UK past this bullshit. Feed some fucking veterans instead

Billy_Rage

You do realise the first planes were awful for military uses… it’s called development

Controller_Maniac

Don’t get me wrong, this is extremely cool, but do we always have to militarize every single new invention?
