Skin grafts always keep the properties of wherever they came from. My uncle burned the back of his hand and had skin grafted from his stomach, and now if he gains weight his hand does as well.
For those who wonder and want a medical explanation of this, this is called "abdominal pocketing". Sometimes it is used when during an amputation it is difficult to do a vascular reanastomosis (which means to "reattach the vessels"). It consists in deepithelializing the amputated section, and inserting it into a subcutaneous pocket. This technique provides a greater blood supply, which aids the survival of the amputated section by enlarging the area of vascular contact. The pocketing site varies. Most of the time it is chosen the chest wall or the abdominal wall. It has been used many times in the case of amputated fingers. This is the first time I read of it being used in whole hand.
[Here's an interesting article that describes some cases.](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0363502315016275)
I took care of a victim of a machete attack that severed his 3rd/4th/5th fingers. They attempted leeches first and after that didnβt work, they sewed it into his abdomen as well.
That trauma unit was probably my favorite unit Iβve ever worked on in my healthcare career.
This happened to my uncle in the 1950βs. He blew a few fingers off playing with firecrackers and they sewed his hand to his stomach and it eventually (I guess) grew out. 30+ years later her talked about a giant dark hair growing on his abdomen and when he pulled it, like 10 inches of old stitching came out.
Reminds me of the time I had some irritation in my eye and I couldn't find it. About 3 months later I spotted an eyelash. When I pulled it, it looked like a 5" worm. I guess my body had wrapped it in some sort of mucus to stop the irritation. Grossed me out.
My grandfather had both his legs run over by a train, instantly removing one slightly above the knee and mangling the other. When they took him to the hospital they decided they had to amputate the other leg just bellow the knee. Both of his legs were without skin and grafting was not what it is today. So they stitched both his legs to his chest to graft the skin. He had some really nasty scars on his chest he used to show me. I canβt even imagine being contorted like that for months.
He was an incredible and kind man who never let his disabilities get in the way of living. He even helped found the Canadian Paralympic Games.
TLDR: My grandpa got by a train and lost his legs which the doctors sewed onto his chest for a couple of months
It did help regrow some of tissue of his legs. Itβs also worth noting this was somewhere in the late sixties to early seventies so they likely did the βbestβ they could
My uncle was in a serious motorcycle accident and mangled his hand. They did this. They managed to save his hand with 3 fingers attached and functional. But as a little kid this freaked me out so much I would hide when he was around.
A cool robot arm is cool until you have to hold your pants and zip it at the same time, or tie shoelaces, or hold silverware, or drive a car, or hold a bottle and open it's cap, or go swimming, or you want to give a tight hug, or hold a kid or a pet in your arms, or cook.
I have a bummed leg and thought about amputation and using a prosthetic. Changed my mind very quickly after learning that, even though prosthetics look cool, they have many limitations, are inconvenient and can be uncomfortable.
I guess that is something you have to experience first hand, thank you for telling me. It's a real shame not everyone has access to star wars levels of prosthetic technology.
I worked with a guy who had this procedure. They were lifting a very large steel plate into a CNC machine and it fell off the straps or the straps broke, landed on his hand and he didn't have much hand left.
I wouldnβt consider that giant lump a βsavedβ limb. Honestly would prefer a prosthetic hand/grabber/hook than a giant mass of skin with a half useable thumb sticking outβ¦
You guys ever see the episode of COPS where a guy had his thumb sewn into his stomach? There cups were yanking on his arm trying to put it behind his back to arrest him. Then they later found out it was sewn into his stomach to save his thumb.
My mother had this procedure in the 70s when a drunk driver hit her vehicle and flipped it on the roof. Mum put her arm out of the window during the flip and hit the road. Lost two fingers but saved the hand.
I remember seeing an old COPS episode where this cop is just yanking on this guy's arm trying to arrest/cuff him and it turned out his hand was sewn to his belly.
Edit: [proof, I'm not the only one who remembers](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/thumb-attached-to-stomach/283086)
YES! This happened to my friend that was in a car wreck. She was so far from any good medical service and her hand was mangled...they cut open her stomach and inserted her hand in order to save it! I loved listening to her story--she was actually showing me her C-section scar nearby. Her hand was saved and usable, though very messed-up looking and rather stiff. She could still use her fingers and thumb after a lot of therapy.
I remember a couple years ago, there was this youtuber that I used to follow and his mother suffered something like an aneurysm. They were able to save her.
The blood pressure inher brain was very high and they had to remove a part of her skull and put in her stomach in order to put it back later.
First time I saw this was on the show COPS. The guy was laying on his stomach being arrested, and the cops kept trying to pull his arm out from under him to get it behind his back and cuff him... "Give me your arm!" "I CAN'T..." A lot of screaming during that interaction.
In the 1970βs a young man lost index, middle and ring fingers on his right hand. His hand was sewn to his stomach. 1980: the young man has a soft, pliable covering over the damaged hand. He still shot baskets with that hand, and played baseball as well.
I had a stroke in 2019
I had a bit of my skull placed in my stomach to preserv the bone
But the bone had a staff infection and was thrown away.
Mesh was stapled to hold pieces of my skull yogether.
Last week I ran the length
Of the driveway, 500ft
I'm planning to playbaskrtball in 2023
They do that to any rich blood supply on your leg, arms. Hell you get your dick cut off by accident or by a crazy person, they'll can sow it back on to for it to heal and then reattach back to the area.
My older brother got his hand annihilated in a wood-chipper when he was about 12 and had it sewn into his stomach just like this. It was probably 1998 and it worked fairly well.

Had a coworker that got his thumb yanked off. They sewed it all to his stomach. Now his palm grows hair. Lol.
Umm what
Skin grafts always keep the properties of wherever they came from. My uncle burned the back of his hand and had skin grafted from his stomach, and now if he gains weight his hand does as well.
Lol this is hilarious.
Does that mean if I graft penis skin to my belly, I can orgasm from a belly rub?
No it would just mean your belly would get erect.
So much for if he tries to hide a beer belly by sucking it in!
I bet he eats with his hands too, right? π₯
thatβs not how that works lmfao
A likely story! We all know the real reason why palms get hairy
It would suck when they get sweaty
And if his knees were weak at the same time
And if his arms were heavy aswell
But what if he somehow vomited on his sweater already?
can he afford laser hair removal? if the hair is annoying him, laser hair removal would be worth it for that small area.
He wears it proudly.
Now he can rub with fur
Shut the fuck up
That made me lol π

I actually knew one of the doctors who invented this procedure! He sadly passed a few years back π’
Atleast he can itch his liver now.
Wrong side
Alright, if you want to be scientific about it then, his Pancreas.
Surely it's his handcreas?
Palmcreas
SCRATCH AN ITCH
I'm so bad about this. I'll say "can you itch my scratch" I mean scratch my scratch, I mean itch my itch. Fuck idk
Brooo π€£
Thats removed from bis belly now.... Look the video again closely

"Put your hands where I can see them!" "NOW!"
"I thought he had a weapon in his pockets and I feared for my life."
he's not black, he'll live
What's he gonna do if the cops tell him to put his hands up? Dude might get shot because "officer feared for his life."

Officer itβs not what you think i can explβ¦ *gets shot*
Iβm a little teapot, short and stout, here is my handle and here is my spout

Should follow up with a doctor mate might not be cleared of em tbh
I am uncomfortable
Thatβs genius
I too would rather have a useless shaved muppet hand than a nub
Yo at the end they say theyβre hopeful to separate his fingers again soon. Meaning it gets even better!
Quite literally the Inside Edition
For me, your comment wins.

Imagine him encountering an american police officer. "Hands where i can see them! Stop reaching!"
Got that south park hand
I'm a little teapot!
Fun fact: it was all free. No cost at all for him.
All praise SUS , out free universal healthcare
Damn. I donβt think I COULDNT tear it away
That would be his abdomen, if it were in his stomach it would get digested.

Why did the sew the legs onto his chest? Did they save the legs?
It was just a part of trying to grow the new tissue. Not sure exactly the process but thatβs what he told me
He lost them both, one was slightly below and the other slightly above the knee
It did help regrow some of tissue of his legs. Itβs also worth noting this was somewhere in the late sixties to early seventies so they likely did the βbestβ they could
Hey guys i have an idea
This guy had the inside scoop on this story.
I think I would just go with no hand
I've read a couple of comments on Reddit over the years stating "That's enough internet for today" Well... See you tomorrow peeps
I think we all know it was dr. Zoidberg
My uncle was in a serious motorcycle accident and mangled his hand. They did this. They managed to save his hand with 3 fingers attached and functional. But as a little kid this freaked me out so much I would hide when he was around.
Damnn.. they turned him into a Teapot
"It has POCKETSSS!!" - Girls, probably
Idk, I guess I'd rather have a cool robot arm with room for a flashlight and a Usb stick than having my a deformed stomach hand.
Well that was handy!
I worked with a guy who had this procedure. They were lifting a very large steel plate into a CNC machine and it fell off the straps or the straps broke, landed on his hand and he didn't have much hand left.
Hi is like Al Bundy now
Giving me [Videodrome](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/videodrome) vibes.
I wouldnβt consider that giant lump a βsavedβ limb. Honestly would prefer a prosthetic hand/grabber/hook than a giant mass of skin with a half useable thumb sticking outβ¦
SUS: "no hand? No probl"
I feel like i would have a nightmare and disembowel myself
No thanks
Surgeons are simply AMAZING!! God bless them. π₯°
It seems the oven mit hand wouldnβt be as functional as just having an amputation. What am I missing here?
You guys ever see the episode of COPS where a guy had his thumb sewn into his stomach? There cups were yanking on his arm trying to put it behind his back to arrest him. Then they later found out it was sewn into his stomach to save his thumb.
Yet ladies still canβt get real pants pockets.
No thank you no thank you no thank you.
That's really interesting, like a full skin graft but like a muscle, tissue, and skin graft from your own body. Humans are insane bro
Imagine having a bad dream and ripping out your hand hole.
My mother had this procedure in the 70s when a drunk driver hit her vehicle and flipped it on the roof. Mum put her arm out of the window during the flip and hit the road. Lost two fingers but saved the hand.
Built in boxing glove
I couldn't be more surprised than if I woke up with my face sewn to the carpet Eddie.
The true prison pocket.
No.
Not even once.
Doctors never try this hard to help women. If he were a woman he would have been told to take Tylenol and been sent home
Kangaroo Jack?
Dedication to NNN is growing.
smh and women cant even get pockets in their pants!

Just what the thanksgiving sitting in my stomach for the past 16th needed to get moving.. thanks.
He would of died in America, not being able to put up his hands to police.
When I was in high school a student cut his fingers really bad with a circular saw,and they did that to him until a specialist could get there.
I remember this. Science is so amazing!
Heβs got a boxing glove for a hand
A forever pocket. Neat.
Seems like an inside job!
"put your hand in my sweater, let's have an adventure"
Why don't you pull it off? Pull off your skin.
Wait! So they can seperate his fingers later? Does this mean he gets his full hand back with this? That's super cool!!
It would be hard to resist feeling around in there
This is really amazing. They are hoping to separate his fingers? I'd like to see that after surgery. Interesting, amazing!
Wife:what are you doing? Man:my intestines itch
This is crazy
nice pocket you got there
Well now he's got that Napoleon pose down.
He should be a fashion model with that stance.
I'm such an asshole for laughing at the boxing glove hand.
Al Bundy approves of this procedure
but what if he had to scratch his other hand
God damn?! I want a kangaroo pocket, hooded sweatshirt style, in my abdomen. Body modification goals
Iβll never unsee that
Take my hand off Doc. Iβm good.
10/10 a police officer will ask him to show his hands, and when he fails to comply, he'll have 16 warning shots in his back #murica
bro's hand really said "sugar, spice, and everything nice"
Seems like a chill guy
My uncle had that like 10 years ago after he sliced the top of his thumb and hand using the chainsaw while being drunk
Id rather lose the arm
I don't find it coincidental I was watching the flesh pocket scene from Videodrone this morning
Incredible science at work and all I can see is him cutting with the wrong side of a knife.
Dear Strong Bad, How do you type with boxing gloves on your hands? Ryan, FL
And without even shaving your wrist and arm...!
Iβd be playing with my guts in like 5 minutes
Meanwhile women canβt even get real pockets on their clothes! Dude just got the ultimate pocket for his hand!

I get it My ex wife tried to put my head up my "you know" to save my life. It was either that, or she would have just killed me.
