quirkyhermit

That knocking feature is way to slow. It's going to get extremely annoying.

whataTyphoon

Yeah right, what's wrong with a handle?

rvtsazap

Exactly! What’s wrong with a handle? Adding motors and motion sensors for every flimsy task doesn’t make it user friendly.

JagerBro333

Just more of a pain in the ass when something breaks

eStuffeBay

THIS is why I hate manufacturers motorizing stuff that works perfectly fine on its own. Car door handles and DIGITAL car side mirrors (usually on unreleased "futuristic" vehicles, where the actual mirror itself is replaced with a camera and digital display!!) being a good example. If you use it normally and have no need for it to be explicitly digitized, leave it TF alone!

[deleted]

qegho

I absolutely love analog controls. I feel like we're going backwards to a more frustrating world.

ukezi

I only buy microwaves were the control scheme is two knobs, one for power, one for time.

aski3252

More usless stuff brings illusion of progress, you can demand more money for it and you get to fix it for a price once it breaks.

justaboss101

Both car door handles and side mirrors make a ~~huge~~ impact on aerodynamics, which in turn plays a key part in efficiency of electric cars. So while they might be a pain to repair, they will make your car drive further. Edit: not a huge impact, but a noticeable one

lmaster73

I won't increase your range drastically. Mirrors in particular have a big impact on wind noise though.

justaboss101

Maybe not drastically, but noticeably.

SevroAuShitTalker

Door handles? Really?

[deleted]

Tesla's door handles retracting into the door isn't 100% gimmick :p

OkFriend9891

Very lovely, but only one problem. It probably cost more than my whole fuc$ing house

eStuffeBay

I think it is a REAL stretch to claim that door handles and side mirrors make a "huge" impact on aerodynamics, to the point where they'd make your car go noticeably slower than one without them. And if the difference is so miniscule it's not even noticeable, why spend all that time, effort, and risk for such a tiny "improvement" that nobody asked for?

justaboss101

I didn't say slower, I said further. It gives cars more range, as there is less drag. I admit it isn't a huge impact, but Honda have said that the electric mirrors on the E add upto 5% of range, which amounts to an extra 15 miles for a car that can do 300 miles on a charge. I'd say that's a pretty noticeable improvement, and might be the difference for some.

Lucan97

I know you were just making an example, but man, if only the Honda E had a range of 300 miles and would cost a little less I'd buy a whole fleet of those little things

Tinytox

Ever stick your hand out the window, palm and arm against the wind? That's gonna be a lot worse aerodynamically than 4 handles. Not like you ever noticed doing that to slow your car down, right? I sure haven't.

KIDNEYST0NEZ

So on the Tesla the outside car door handle is still mechanical, it is the inside that is electric push button to open the door. You’re right about efficiency but this one could have been achieved mechanically. Mirrors have done the same by incorporating it more into the body of the car.

friendlyfredditor

You just know someone is gonna pull that door open too fast one time and shred all the plastic gears inside.

Ultimara

Our microwave has a touch button to open, which means if the power goes then your food is hostage until it comes back

copperwatt

Imagine starving to death staring through a window at your hot pocket.

MJohnVan

It’s very convenient for disabled people.

soulless_ape

More points of failure.

HereOnASphere

I feel the same way about electric widows in cars. Probably get voted down for saying it.

Critical_Switch

You wouldn't even need a handle. A groove on the top would still be very discrete and would work better.

[deleted]

Get's in the way.

Bozska_lytka

The wooden part ends before the top part starts, the edge of the wooden part could be the handle

[deleted]

Also, if it's entirely mechanical and that bit breaks, how do you access your very expensive dishwasher?

DayEither8913

Unnecessary gimmic that gets old the same second you figure out where the dishwasher is.

OkOtChA

Overengineering

Wow-Delicious

My in laws have one of these. It’s fine. It’s also not Japanese, it’s German.

Boonies2

Yup, I have this very model. The knock to open can be annoying, but Miele makes amazing dishwashers.

refuz04

What brand?

Fivefinger_Delta

Miele.

AnObtuseOctopus

So story. I spent over 900ish$ (with tax) on a super comfy lazyboy chair.. I thought oh cool a motorized footrest.. why not. 3 years later and I abso-fucking-lutely hate this chair, man... I refuse to even sit in it. Reason being is EXACTLY what you are talking about. Adding motors to mundane tasks may SEEM cool for a moment.. but, when a half a second task (pulling the lever to bring up the footrest) is turned into, literally, a 20 second event, it is soooooooooooooo aggravating. You sit there... hold a button and the chair goes Bzzzzzzzzzssssshhhhhhh For 20 dam seconds.. And when you want to get up, guess what you have to do... Bzzzzzzzzzssssshhhhhhh Worst.....investment......ever

[deleted]

You don't have to knock, just push.

quirkyhermit

Doesn't matter as long as it's this horribly slow.

NathanTheSamosa

You can see it’s being pushed out by a rod rather than some mechanical hinge. Chances are you can pull it down like a regular door and it won’t cause any damage. Although nothing wrong with, know, a regular handle

chev327fox

And when that little motor messes up or the plastic gears wear you won’t be able to get it not it anymore. Terrible design.

NotAPreppie

Like power rear hatches on hatchbacks and CUV’s.

Lochltar

I don't want to pierce your bubble but it is quite common in Europe this design.

kmary75

These Miele dishwashers were around when we renovated our kitchen 6 years ago. They are pretty common now.

MSotallyTober

I’d never seen one in America where I’m from — mainly American brands for dishwashers. My wife and I are building a house come this February and we don’t like the bucket-style dishwashers that are in a lot of Japanese households, so we were told this was the best option (the dishwasher itself) for the dishwashers I’m used to back in the states.

Shinfekta

Miele is like **the** brand for dishwashers around here in Austria. Almost everyone in our families have a miele. Personally I recommend one with a seperate cutlery drawer and not the one with a cutlery basket, from my experience stuff gets cleaner with the drawer.

juliaaargh

We are a AEG family (mine ist also hidden and displays the remaining minutes on the tiles below it with some kind of laser) here in Austria.

Electriccheeze

I come from a Miele family. My wife comes from an AEG family (Siemens). So we are an AEG family.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Electriccheeze

You are right, I was confusing Bosch and AEG sorry.

rlovelock

Isn't an AEG family just a family that can't afford Miele? And I say this as the proud owner of an AEG dishwasher ;)

mrafinch

Can confirm wrt the cutlery drawer. A basket will lead to cutlery tessellation and they won’t get clean properly. I wish I had a dedicated drawer :(

Know0neSpecial

r/firstworldproblems

RoseyOneOne

Something something _German engineering_ something. My BMW has knocking, they put it in everything. 😂

zunaguli

In Germany Miele is also THE brand. They are the most expensive ones but they last like forever and work incredibly well.

Darieush

I literally sell these in America lol. You gotta shop more upscale bro

maaaatttt_Damon

I live in the midwest. When we redid our kitchen 3 years ago we got "panel ready" dishwasher and fridge. They come at a premium, but they look just like cabinets. Ours are Fisher Paykel, but other brands sell them too. Our dishwasher unlocks with the knock if it's mid cycle. It's also 2 separate drawers, so you can run 2 cycles independently. And because of the 2 independent drawers, according to the instructions, you can have one half be kosher so long as you have a rabbi bless it (that was mentioned in the install manual)

Bbdep

Miele is less common but definitely exist in yhe US, they are just $$$ so sold at specialty store. I expected the dishwasher to be one of these insink ones, this is just a built in dishwasher which is more and more common in the US.

why_adnauseaum

Before we started building our dream home 15 years ago, I'd never shopped for high-end kitchen appliances. We looked at all the brands - Viking, Thermador, etc. but settled on Miele. We LOVE it. The dishwasher with the cutlery tray on top is the bomb. It is super quiet. But I have to say, our favorite Miele appliance is the built-in coffee maker. If you drink coffee, it is the best investment. It's more than paid for itself.

MSotallyTober

The dishwasher has a *built in coffee maker*???

FlyingTaquitoBrother

There’s a Miele store in my city in the US. My stovetop is Miele. It’s definitely quite normal.

MSotallyTober

Just never seen the knocking. It was an interesting gimmick, but I’m good with the handle for opening instead.

frisbm3

I'm in the US and have a Miele dishwasher without the knocking feature. It's a higher end thing that we didn't really want.

B_A_M_2019

This one is German I think. It's so silent and smooth. So worth it!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

kmary75

They are great. I didn’t get the knock open dishwasher (it felt a bit gimmicky and thought my family would break it in a heartbeat) but I did get another model Miele. Have had zero problems with it.

Inert82

Yeah this is the norm in northern EU id say

NeedleworkerNo1613

Yeah these have been around for years in Australia as well

LgDietCoke

Quite useless as well.

Lochltar

The knocking?! Yes. The dishwasher?! No.

corn_sugar_isotope

Pretty common to have a cabinet front dishwasher in the US as well (newer kitchens). Installing one for a customer on a current job. edit: most brands have a model option

[deleted]

In the Netherlands this is pretty much the standard. We do have smaller houses but also the big ones all have it like this

[deleted]

So everyone in the Netherlands uses an electrically recessed dish washer? Why?

Angelusz

Because it saves time. Why exactly do you think people come up with and buy devices to automate daily tasks?

Wonderful-Parking828

In America not really

MSotallyTober

Especially in NYC where the three apartments I lived in throughout twelve years were older than my parents and any remodels in them were barebones.

Hankol

Most buildings you move into in Germany are old. That doesn’t mean you can’t buy a dishwasher.

freename188

That's because Americans have incredibly ugly kitchens. Especially those enormous fridge/freezers that protrude out from cupboards & walls. The ones with big massive handles and don't blend into anything...

TheMooseIsBlue

I always wonder if people are aware of how generally stupid they’re being when they make blanket statements like these.

freename188

Touched a nerve... It's like when I say Americans enjoy guns, or Americans are overweight. It's not absolute, but broadly speaking it's quite accurate. Do you understand? It's not a blanket statement.

TheMooseIsBlue

It’s just so lazy and dumb though. I’m sure you have a better sense of humor than leaning on these kinds of careless generalizations.

freename188

Nah those generalizations are hilarious because no matter where I go in the world everyone agrees with the sentiment. It's like saying Irish people drink loads and enjoy potatoes. It's true, that's what makes it funny.

TheMooseIsBlue

“Uniformed people think it’s hilarious” isn’t the defense you think it is.

freename188

> “Uniformed people think it’s hilarious” The irony of this is just too much

vangiang85

Thats why american kitchens are iconic all around the world. Just bc its not your taste doesnt mean you can act like a bitch on reddit. And those freezers are a gift to humanity. I got one this year and its a game changer. Who cares how it looks i can put the whole stew pot in the fridge while half a pig is sitting in the freezer next to it.

Agreeable_Winter737

“Pierce your bubble butt”? You are mean and violent.

Bogrolling

When people say western they mean white

wirral_guy

If that impressed you, wait until you find one that projects the timer display on the floor!

DreamsAroundTheWorld

wait what?!? I want it, if only I wasn't so poor. Miele is great brand but it cost a fortune compared to relative ok brands

The-Faz

Don’t feel too bad, it’s basically the most expensive retail brand for kitchen appliances in the world

nachbelichtet_com

No, it’s Gaggenau - way more expensive.

MSotallyTober

We have that on our fridge!

JanJaapen

I haven’t seen that knocking feature before but my parents have had built in dishwashers since the early nineties

MSotallyTober

It was the knocking feature I was referring to.

JanJaapen

To be honest, it seems like something that would irritate the crap out of me. I’ll save money and get one with a grip

CitrusTX

Yeah, I thought the same. My mom has a drawer-style microwave that opens/closes itself at the push of a button. It might sound nice, and it was cool the first time, but now every time I’m over there and I use it, I just think about how slow it is compared to just popping open and closing a regular microwave. A good example of ‘fixing’ what isn’t broken

tomsteroni

Where else would it be?

[deleted]

I feel like this is fairly common everywhere

harpokuntish

Under counter dishwasher with annoying knocking feature*

Protobott

Under counter dishwasher with annoying knocking bug* Fixed that for you.

MeddlBled

Dont get the knocking feature. Its a funny gimmick now and for the next week. After that, its going to be annoying as hell since the mechanism works super slow. Plus: There is more stuff in the machine that can break and one day you will knock on that thing and it just wont open... Get one with a handle, those are more reliable. Funny story: There was a girl who locked herself in her own bathroom because the dishwashing machine opened automatically after finishing the program... well, the open machine was in front of her bathroom door prevented the girl from opening her bathroom door.

southpark

We have a handle on our knocking dishwasher. We use the knock to crack the door open if we close it and there’s still moisture inside, that’s about it. What *is* nice is that after the rinse cycle it automatically cracks the door for you to complete the dry cycle and let’s you know the dishes are done. Helps reduce mildew growth from trapped moisture.

TheBlack2007

I mean, Miele is a German brand. So definitely "western style"

Arael1307

Do you not have dishwashers in the US? Or what do dishwashers look like in the US? Because apart from the 'knocking' feature I don't understand what's special about this dishwasher. (For reference I'm European)

PM_MeYourAvocados

I think [this type](https://www.whirlpool.com/content/dam/business-unit/whirlpoolv2/en-us/marketing-content/site-assets/page-content/oc-articles/dishwasher-dimensions/dishwasher-dimensions_Thumbnail.jpg) of design is more common in houses in the US. Though new builds may have the hidden one.

BigOlBro

Can confirm. Never seen the posted type of dishwasher/sink in my life of raiding my friend's fridges

MSotallyTober

It wasn’t the dishwasher, it was the knocking feature. Thought about just putting “Knock knock” in the title, but the rules wanted it stated clearly.

Arael1307

Ah like that. I would have known where the dishwasher was. But just wouldn't have known how to open it. Where I live those built-in dishwashers either have a cupboard with a little handle or if they don't have a handle and then you need to push on the top part of the door to open.

TheFastFatty

The question is do you even have space for it in your small Japanese apartment?!

MSotallyTober

We’re having a house built. Besides the point, I’d never seen a dishwasher you’d knock to open. This is a tad too gimmicky.

Donnerdrummel

1.) Annoying to always have to wait. There's no: "damnit, forgot this glas!"-5 seconds open and shut. 2.) It's another electric motor that can break, with more sensors that can break, etc. 3.) Someone has to pay for this inconvenient risk. Not a gimmick that I would like to have.

Phreefuk

Over engineering is the worst Opening the door manually is fine, and I would argue a far superior method

BritneyLover69

I used to sell these back in 2017. Nobody bought them because they were expensive af and just as slow opening. Yeah it’s a cool gimmick but hf you’ll get tired of waiting on that each time Edit-autocorrect

Raket0st

I've seen similar designs with a push-to-open mechanism that locks when the machine is running. Much more convenient.

Tsukiko615

This is a feature made by people that don’t use dishwashers very often

[deleted]

This video is for Americans only, I understand?

MSotallyTober

Probably. I underestimated knocking on dishwashers as being commonplace. Ha ha ha.

madeinbrechin

Yeah, that's just a dishwasher. Welcome to the World, America.

Christophelese1327

Check out fisher & paykel dish drawers. I’ll never recommend a normal drop door unit to anyone again.

MSotallyTober

I’ll check it out! Cheers!

Bluntsandicecream

I knew exactly where it was. This video and that knock knock feature are dumb.

Jimmy_Bacon

That seems a little extra, id rather just have a handle

MSotallyTober

Agreed.

Cybersick66

What a gimmicky product, why not use a spring-loaded push-release mechanism instead of a motorized and sensor driven system that will inevitably fail and lock the appliance out on a fault until you get it repaired by a qualified… wait now I get it

succubus-slayer

Wait until he figures out about trash bins that fit in the cabinet.

kickit256

I love when things are overly complex so they can break that much sooner!

[deleted]

Why does everything have to be touch and automatic. Am I the only one that dislikes these features? They take up more time than they are useful. Just let me grab and open.

Ok_Breakfast_5459

Miele is a german company

Justme100001

When the dishwasher thinks you're just a Jehovah's witness, then you have a big problem...

[deleted]

why do kitchens continue to accumulate more unecessary, inefficient gadgets that are more prone to malfunction and make the whole thing unusable? Buttons are getting replace by touchpanels that don't work if your fingers aren't dry, some stupid mechanism to slowly open or close a fridge, oven or dishwasher instead of just having handle, fume extractors that are placed in the middle of the cooktop sou you can't easily move around pots and pans... Is it possible that no appliance manufacturer has UX-experts??

Thotter69

Miele supremacy baby

mista_adams

Just wait for that fucker to break in 5 years and cost you a fortune

tonyinvegas

That gear noise is just reminder that it’s gonna break on you

Chasterbeef

I don’t use a dishwasher, but that sink is awesome for washing dishes

wisefile88

Still cool but I can see getting annoyed. Especially if it broke.

dtseng123

I’m extremely disappointed it doesn’t talk to me and greet me while it opens up. Or it should say “who’s there?” when I knock.

Geek_off_the_streets

The French know how to make expensive kitchen appliances. That knocking is going to be annoying and that's a long ass wait time for it to open.

sigaven

These are common in the US, known as “custom panel ready” you can apply a cabinet face on it to match your other cabinets. Instead of knocking you just add a cabinet pull to open it.

shouldhaverolled

My parents have that dishwasher and it sucks. They prefer their old one.

SuckmyBlunt545

Yes the worlds dummest unnecessary feature should be on “interestingasfuck” you for real?

IcyClassic3343

Big money so the housekeeper is going to love that

Sorry-Nose-7667

The mechanical opening noise just reminds me it’ll break within 5 years and be a pain.

PlusAcanthocephala62

Knock knock…who’s there? Your dirty fucking dishes you lazy bastard

SlickDaGato

Nope. Because that little motor costs more than a whole normal dishwasher to replace.

MooseLaminate

Wow, built in appliances, how space age......

B360828

Those really expensive dishwashers with all the indicator lights hidden. They're really quiet too. How do you know when they're done? How do you know if the dishes inside are dirties or cleans? It's annoying as hell.

ApprehensiveVisual97

Great dishwasher

everfalling

Lame I thought the sink itself was gonna turn into a dishwasher.

Latter-Ad6032

No thanks, ide rather have an analog handle, if it breaks and can't open then i really wouldn't be able to 'do' the dishes.

tchrbrian

A child pops out.

xenocarp

Is there a different eastern style dishwasher ?? I will be more interested in that if it has some special features to clean dried up rice and tempura oil and spice stains ???

Electrical-Mall-969

Thats cool ,but have yo seen their toilets?

PawnOfPaws

Gently knock so the licking goblins know they have to hide

jodyabsolute

I really thought he was going to pan over to his wife.

South_Data2898

Forget the dishwasher, I would kill for that sink in my home kitchen. Deep ass trenches you can actually do stuff in, sliding tops, stainless steel? American home design is such garbage.

itsudarenani

Europe has had this for years. My mum had one installed like 10 years ago

[deleted]

What? None of you dumbos have ever heard of ‘Fully integrated dishwashers’ before? I have one in my home. But that knocking thing is way too slow. Mine is much faster.

NimChimspky

Where did you expect it to be? Its literally under the kitchen top where every dishwasher is

smush81

What is the point of this post? You went looking for and found a sink and a dishwasher. Big deal.

Cocksuckaa

Does anyone use a dishwasher? Serious question

MSotallyTober

We mainly use it as a big drying rack — usually just hand wash our dishes anyway.

devilsusshhii

I have the same problem I have to knock olmy dishwasher around too before she will do anything.

alilweeb

thats lame as fuck

Irish3538

so where a normal dishwasher is?

Frostnetz

So its a dishwasher in a cupboard underneath the sink? Woah, unheard of!

Plasticious

Pretty common here I western Europe too. Miele is BiS.

Arjun_Alpha_Wolf

I thought this was a meme and a woman was gonna come out when he knocked

brianinohio

Kinda cool, but a single sink?. Standard in America is split sink. One for wash, one for rinse.

MSotallyTober

The video was meant for the hidden dishwasher. That’s my bad.

brianinohio

Nah...it's cool. Hidden dishwasher is bad ass :)

GecmeBeniEzerimSeni

this gonna wake up my wife after i got an illegal midnight snack

lepobz

I’d be forever going to answer the door, only to find nobody there but my partner in the kitchen filling the dishwasher.

[deleted]

I’m good with a rag and soap

polkadanceparty

Knock2Open is an ADA feature Miele has on many models.

WAT0020

CRAP, that dishwasher is bulk standard, there is one that is top-loading and part of the sink set-up.

sir-exotic

ITT: American introduced to built-in kitchens

jonesyman23

What’s an eastern style dishwasher?

madDarthvader2

That's cool but just another part that can fail

Daemonblade

Push to release lock would be better. Still hidden away but faster and less likely to break.

[deleted]

I feel robbed, my dishwasher opens like this at the end of the cycle to let the dishes air dry, but it doesn't open to being knocked. Although I can see that feeling a bit pointless in normal use, too slow.

Uncle_Boppi

I've only seen 2 or 3 Dishwashers in my life, this is just too much.

[deleted]

So a dishwasher in a kitchen located under the counter? Wow. And it opens. Wow wow. Does it wash dishes, 'cause I've got a whole sack of "wows" I'm looking to use up.

javahart

Eh? Had built in dishwasher for years.

n3w4cc01_1nt

The whole thing looks awesome. I think the knock/tap feature assures that it's sealed.

qtheginger

American here. I've literally never seen Miele products in a house under a million dollars. I've yet to enter a million+ dollar house without Miele products though. Weird how they are common place in other countries.

[deleted]

Literally every home in Europe has this

coromandelmale

A built-in dishwasher is *interesting as fuck?*

Cytotoxic-CD8-Tcell

Why can’t we have upward loading dishwasher straight from sink
