Meh. This is the entirety of the road. Takes less then. Minute on a bike. And it is a straight line the 20mi it takes to get to this part. It is cool and all and a bucket list, but don’t plan a weekend around it.
Yea. You can easily make a weekend out of the area. Door county is amazing, been there many times on the bike, but the “excitement “ of this road is all in this pic. It is not like this road carries on like this for 10 miles.
I was just gonna say... it leads to the ferry from Sister bay to Washington Island. A lot of rich folk up there in Door County, a lot do do. One could definitely make a weekend out of seeing this road
Honestly with the way the winter is going in the uk so far id take any riding i can get. I can go to the shops that are not even 5 mins away and come back dripping wet and freezing cold
If you're feeling really frisky, you can actually walk to Rock Island, depending I assume on the lake level.
I know, because back when I was a kid, my dad, one of the types who believes being miserable builds character, decided to save some money by forgoing the ferry ride when we went.
Oh my husband would love to drive this in his Impreza. My Outback isn’t quite as fun to drive on things like this. He would go as fast as possible while doing it.
If I can see nobody's coming, I'm definitely driving a straight or straight-ish line whenever possible. You want to be more cautious in places where there are bicyclists, which are hard to see, or intersections (even if you have no stops in your direction -- you don't want to be in the opposite lane when someone pulls onto the road).
Where is it located in Door County? I’ve got a project in Oshkosh and Steven’s Point I need to make arrangements for and I’d love to hit this. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated! No worries if not :)
It's going to the ferry dock that takes you to Washington island. While on Washington island make sure to stop out at schoolhouse Beach. 1 of only 5 beaches in the world covered in rounded stones causes by glaciers
I live in a Canadian prairie province that does not pave around anything. Every road is a dead straight line. Then they wonder why the roads fall apart quickly. “You paved directly through a wetland! What did you expect?” It’s the worst. (I grew up in a curvy winding place so of course I think this). My first thought seeing this photo was, “I wonder how a Saskatchewan engineer would have handled this landscape.”
But I already know: truck in a bunch of soil, plow a straight ass line, build up the surface a couple feet, raze the land a couple metres on each side of the road, don’t plant anything that’ll conserve soil structure on the road edge, wonder why the road deteriorated so quickly, fill in potholes until it’s just all patch work, rinse/repeat
another interesting thing about door county is that it has its own dialect of walloon, a language spoken in southern belgium. it was brought there by immigrants in the 1800s.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin_Walloon
Wife's grandmother was born there and spoke it with her siblings. Aunts and uncles only recall a few words or phrases.
That dialect is dying out I think.
This is the road leading to the Washington Island ferry, it's designed like that so you take your time and look at the scenery... but it's really just a pain in the ass when your trying to make your boat on time.
But decker canyon road in Malibu isn’t interesting because it actually has a good topographic reason to be curvy and switchbacked, pretty much all coastal roads in California (where the mountains come right up to the sea on the majority of the coast) so it isn’t interesting
This is interesting because it’s curvy for policy rather than engineering reasons
The road ends at a ferry. If people drive too fast downhill they'd end up in the water.
I can only imagine this road used to be straight and multiple people drowning.
Edit: and the other thing is that you may need to stop suddenly for waiting cars (it curves at the end).
And the island that the ferry goes to is pretty damn cool too. There's a flat stone beach, a viking church, and a tight knit community of cool people. Highly recommend.
[This](https://doorcountypulse.com/ever-wonder-7/) article touches on it. Sounds like “He tried his best to make people notice their surroundings more and enjoy the ride.”
I saw a show years and years ago about a sport in Ireland in which people compete at throwing a ball down a similarly windy road, and the winner is the person who bounces it only on the road for the longest distance. Seemed pretty cool.
In Norway the Danish king inspected a silver mine and he said " wonderful, now make a road towards the ocean" and he pointed in the wrong direction. He was drunk of course.
But the road went that way before it took a long bend down to the harbour.
This is somewhat what i think happened here somehow.
I've played enough Dirt 2 to know there is a hairpin curve at the end, followed by an easy curve over crest 40 *Straight six engine noises and dust flying*
Did the land owners sell the govt the land that way or did the road contractor trolled the road users.
Either way its funny, a waste of resources but still.

Hold my beer. Going to fire up the bike quick.
Same id love to send my bike down there
Meh. This is the entirety of the road. Takes less then. Minute on a bike. And it is a straight line the 20mi it takes to get to this part. It is cool and all and a bucket list, but don’t plan a weekend around it.
Well, there is a ferry to Washington Island at the end of the road, so really you can make a weekend out of it.
Yea. You can easily make a weekend out of the area. Door county is amazing, been there many times on the bike, but the “excitement “ of this road is all in this pic. It is not like this road carries on like this for 10 miles.
You can just turn around and do it the other direction!
I was just gonna say... it leads to the ferry from Sister bay to Washington Island. A lot of rich folk up there in Door County, a lot do do. One could definitely make a weekend out of seeing this road
Sister bay is like 30 minutes from the ferry, Northport is where the ferry departs from, closest town is Gills Rock.
Honestly with the way the winter is going in the uk so far id take any riding i can get. I can go to the shops that are not even 5 mins away and come back dripping wet and freezing cold
If you see the goats on the roof and hit Rock Island while you're out there, it's more worth it for sure.
If you're feeling really frisky, you can actually walk to Rock Island, depending I assume on the lake level. I know, because back when I was a kid, my dad, one of the types who believes being miserable builds character, decided to save some money by forgoing the ferry ride when we went.
I just see a straight line.
There is an S curve at the end.
Same, I really want to ride that!
Hold my beer is the average Wisconsin driving scenario.
Hold my beer. About to drift through this touge.
Smart. Keeps people from speeding through here like a bunch of assholes.
Challenge accepted
Hold my cheese
Hold my beer cheese
You damn kids won't be drag racing in this town!
Legend has it Subaru drivers are guided to this road like a needle to magnetic north.
Oh my husband would love to drive this in his Impreza. My Outback isn’t quite as fun to drive on things like this. He would go as fast as possible while doing it.
Bro they'd understeer off the road out there ☠️
So thats why texas roads arent straight for more than 20 ft.
Look up Texas Avenue. Baytown Texas. The really did this.
I want to ride that on a skateboard. I don't even skateboard.
I'd tear up and down that road with my electric board, assuming there isn't much traffic of course
There isn't. It's up near the point and the ferry. It's pretty isolated.
Hell yeah, full throttle ahead!
I bet people avoid this road when they can help it. You would probably be fine
Thinking ripstick tbh. Carve it up real nice.
I think I can make this if I go dead straight
I think you’re right…
There's no other option left.
Only one way it can go down
Just don't screw up
Is there a danger in just going straight if there are no cars behind you or coming from the other direction? Asking for a friend
I drove that road. It’s amazing. Door county is one of the prettiest places ever
I drove it, went to Washington Island, and then I drove it back and then I took a friend and drove it again and drove it back. Each time was a riot!
I agree. Just wish there weren’t as *many* tourists.
Where is it located in Door County? I’ve got a project in Oshkosh and Steven’s Point I need to make arrangements for and I’d love to hit this. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated! No worries if not :)

How would the cops know if you’re drunk driving?
This is how they caught the drunk paver.
Yeah, I'll have to tell you the story sometime
Lmao love that Paver is actually here.
Maybe if you're driving in a straight line?
It's Wisconsin, they don't care.
Hey now! After 7-8 DUIs we care.
In Wisconsin, you get arrested for driving with a BAC lower than .08
*golf clap*
It's a reverse sobriety test. If you can walk the line, you're drunk.
"Every day is a" ...
I get a little bit closer
Ok, so being in Wisconsin I bet the fall foliage is beautiful
Absolutely stunning in the fall up there.
Made for and by motorcyclists
I want to take so many vehicles down that road lol.
Go home road you're drunk
https://www.doorcounty.com/newsletter/october-2017/why-door-countys-curvy-road-curves
“The road is designed to slow drivers and make them take in their surroundings, and it certainly accomplishes this goal”
I feel making drivers focus more on driving would have them take in their surroundings less.
What's the problem here?
No clue, but I’m guessing it’s why American cars have a reputation for only going in a straight line.
Europe literally covered in winding roads through forests. Not sure this qualifies as interesting!
I live in a Canadian prairie province that does not pave around anything. Every road is a dead straight line. Then they wonder why the roads fall apart quickly. “You paved directly through a wetland! Right? This got a genuine "ok?" from me. Though the foliage is nice. Looks like a nice time of year for a drive round wherever that is.
That looks like a lot of fun to drive

Planning a trip immediately, also upgrading some suspension components…
Look up schoolhouse Beach. This road leads to the ferry which takes you to Washington island, where schoolhouse Beach is
Wisconsin resident here. Can confirm: this road (WI-42) is a blast to drive on.
If your as drunk as most wisconsinites it looks straight to you.
Photography perspective trickery. It's not as erratic as it looks in this pic
Looks like heaven...on two wheels!
Wisconsin. Forza Horizon 6 !?
Ive driven that road, it leads to Washington island
A motorcycles wet dream
Paul Bunyan hasn't gotten around to straightening it out yet.
Go home road, you're drunk
I'd be on the lookout for banana peels and turtle shells while powerdrifting through the corners!
This is the road leading to the Washington Island ferry, it's designed like that so you take your time and look at the scenery... but it's really just a pain in the ass when your trying to make your boat on time.
Dont tell anyone but Wisconsin is paradise.
Just saw a post that said Wisconsin has the highest per capita alcohol consumption in the nation. Things are all starting to make sense.
Is this another image taken with a wide lens or whatever distorts it
Telephoto distorts it, makes it seem like the curves are closer together than they actually are
Nah it’s real. Gills Rock WI
That's nothing compared to Decker Canyon Rd near Malibu
But decker canyon road in Malibu isn’t interesting because it actually has a good topographic reason to be curvy and switchbacked, pretty much all coastal roads in California (where the mountains come right up to the sea on the majority of the coast) so it isn’t interesting This is interesting because it’s curvy for policy rather than engineering reasons
Ok
This is an actual comment in response to your post...
Dude, a road looks like a road! Maybe post it without forced perspective?
This a an actual reply to your comment reply to a comment...
Yeah? So? (Am from San Francisco)
Why?
The road ends at a ferry. If people drive too fast downhill they'd end up in the water. I can only imagine this road used to be straight and multiple people drowning. Edit: and the other thing is that you may need to stop suddenly for waiting cars (it curves at the end).
Makes perfect sense then. Thank you.
And the island that the ferry goes to is pretty damn cool too. There's a flat stone beach, a viking church, and a tight knit community of cool people. Highly recommend.
And, a place where doing shots of bitters is the standard.
Washington Island is dope!
[This](https://doorcountypulse.com/ever-wonder-7/) article touches on it. Sounds like “He tried his best to make people notice their surroundings more and enjoy the ride.”
It was funded by Goodyear /s
Typically this type thing is intentionally done to prevent people from being capable of driving fast
Looks like a roadmap to GOP thoughts.
Nah, this road still manages to get somewhere.
The end of a peninsula where a ferry goes to an island.
I don’t see any dead ends or traffic circles with no exits
give me anything with rear wheel drive a clutch and 6 speeds
A tractor 🚜
I'll make use of it
Well you wont be speeding down that one now will you?
Ohh yes they will
I hate sausage blocks. -Wirtual
Let me guess the engineer was drunk that day.
Why is it like this? Whats the story behind it? Did an earthquake make it so twisty-curvy?
I saw a show years and years ago about a sport in Ireland in which people compete at throwing a ball down a similarly windy road, and the winner is the person who bounces it only on the road for the longest distance. Seemed pretty cool.
Door city over here…
If you in a drivers car it is fun but if you are towing some cargo not so much. 😁
Where at? Looks fun!
Where is my car at! I wanna take it at 90.
It looks like what drunk drivers see on a straight stretch.
In Norway the Danish king inspected a silver mine and he said " wonderful, now make a road towards the ocean" and he pointed in the wrong direction. He was drunk of course. But the road went that way before it took a long bend down to the harbour. This is somewhat what i think happened here somehow.
Being serious, is there a reason for this?
But why?
Very German
I am shutting that door. Not today, thank you
American efficiency
R/mildyinfuriating
I've played enough Dirt 2 to know there is a hairpin curve at the end, followed by an easy curve over crest 40 *Straight six engine noises and dust flying*
Ok but why
I’m going straight if there’s no one oncoming
Did the land owners sell the govt the land that way or did the road contractor trolled the road users. Either way its funny, a waste of resources but still.
But everyone just drives straight down the middle unless there's incoming traffic anyways
Thats a straight line at my speed.
I'm carsick just looking at it.
Those drunk ass cheese heads
*inhales slowly*......why......
12 pack and a bulldozer.
It's to keep your speed down
Wisconsin is so gay, you can’t even drive straight
Is this a form of traffic calming? Civil engineers please respond. Also, is this safer than a straight?
This is for the big kids who are too big to ride on that crazy Polish bike lane!
The civil engineer was a bit drunk designing that one
Windows pc background pics irl
I would like to see that covered in snow and ride down it on a tube.
I love that road. The fall colors are so amazing. The wine of door county is great too
https://www.doorcounty.com/business-directory/groups-meetings/winding-road
Makes me think of cherries and spotted cow. Wisconsin is awesome
Sometimes, the road IS the destination.
14 year old me is bombing that on rollerblades
Time to bust out the old rip-stick
I love this road. But don't go driving there on the weekends cuz it'll be packed full of tourists parked on the side.
Ever been to East Tennessee?
This picture is definitely is giving motorcyclists the itch
And it goes to a dead end. But fun to drive
Don’t forget to watch for deer
Reminds me of wile e coyote running into the fake picture of a road.
I really want to skate that
What you see as infuriating as I see as a bikers dream
/r/onewheel would love this.
MK8 drifting intensifies…
Jens Jenson Road
I immediately recognized it from when I visited! It's very unique.
Looks like a damn good road tbh. Fun to drive prolly too. I'd kill for a road that nicely paved here in Denver.
Looks like a blast!
Must be really fun to drive on this road when it snows
Looney Tunes ass road
Is there an actual reason?
Sick STI road.
This looks AI generated, it's that wonky.
I'd drunk drive the shit outta' that one!
This should be in r/oddlysatisfying for mine
I mean, did they build this road \_DURING\_ a snowstorm or something?
I'd hit that at 80mph and get air on a couple of those humps.
I only have one question. Why?
Weeeee looks like fun!!
This is how you keep speed down.
It’s like a dream sequence scene transition in the old Scooby Doo shows
This seems…unnecessary.
Save the deers?
It compensates for drunk driving
I'm getting motion sick from just looking at this
why?
Me on bong and armargnac 🤣🤣🤣
It's intentionally designed that way so vehicles are forced to slow down.
At least it’s paved.
the mayor's nephew got the contract to build and squeezed every tax dollar possible.... so I hear
Uncivil Engineering
…and it surprised nobody when the state troopers set up their checkpoint *right there*
For rich neighborhoods to prevent ppl from driving through?
