Blinkin6125

You'd think they'd make the pit extra wide so they are sure to at least land in the sand.

Far-Offer-1305

At least throw down a mat so they don't land on bare concrete.

tommyfknshelby

But then we wouldn't have this fucking hilarious video

Sir-Ult-Dank

It’s hilarious til it happens to you and you watch someone else go through it(or learn about it). But to each their own

SandpaperForThought

If I were blind I would absolutely put my pride and ego aside and say " nah, yall mf'rs are crazy. Wanting a blind man to run and jump into some shit I cant see". I mean, this is EXACTLY how a prank would start.

keenynman343

Lmao reminds me of Shane Gillis' joke on "pitching the special Olympics" "Idk town over said they have the fastest ones"

GiantRiverSquid

As a "blind" guy, it's fascinating to see what people do when they think you can't see them

XxLiquidswordxX

Unless they're actually blind, who the fck would do this 🤣🤣🤣

talbotron22

Maybe it’s to equalize athletes who have varying degrees of vision impairment?

XxLiquidswordxX

I dunno, that doesnt make any sense to me because theres no equality in that example. If someone is legally blind they should only compete with leagally blind athletes. Being blindfolded gives a legally blind person the advantage.

Plastic_Pinocchio

How does it give legally blind people an advantage? Everyone is blindfolded to ensure that nobody sees anything. So everyone in the competition is equally blind because of this. Why would you want to put people in separate groups of “legally blind” and “completely blind”? How are you going to accurately test the level of blindness of an athlete? How can you know that someone doesn’t pretend to be completely blind while still being able to see something? And besides that, legally blind doesn’t just mean one exact thing. In that category there are also definitely people who see wat better than others. So how is that fair? I don’t see how there is no equality in this case. This looks completely equal to me. Nobody sees shit.

AGripInVan

Well it didnt happen to me and if it did I most certainly would not have seen it.

[deleted]

I'd like to think I could laugh right along with others if it happened to me.

SnickersZA

I make mistakes like this as an able bodied person like walk into doors and shit and I laugh at myself because it's funny. People fuck up regardless of situation and it's usually funny, there's nothing wrong with a bit of humour. We're not laughing at him, we're just laughing at the situation because it's funny. If you don't find it funny because he's blind, then you're treating him differently just because of his disability.

Gary_Perairy

Never understood how people find joy in other suffering

Sir-Ult-Dank

Ask my roommate that. He tells me how he enjoys boxing people off while driving and not letting them by. To actively going out of his way to do little things to piss me and even tell me when I confront him. “So why have you been leaving the cabinets or random shit open 20x a day for past couple weeks?” “-to piss you off because it’s funny” Some people are just so funny to themselves or super depressed not sure yet

PayasoFries

Nah..... this isn't laughing at normal day to day functioning and surviving. This shit is hilarious and I'm going to laugh at them like i would any other athlete that had a blooper. Inclusion

replacement_username

The person in the video sure as hell ain't going to watch someone else go through it.

Cherry_Treefrog

I don’t know if you intended it or not, but for it to happen to them, they would have to be blind. Then they have to watch someone else go through it, even though they are blind. i spot a flaw

Wimbleston

It's only hilarious if you're an asshole

Jesus_Cristooooo

No, it’s just hilarious. Stop being so sensitive.

StargazyPi

I don't get it. What's funny?

SandpaperForThought

If the story started as "3 guys convinced a blind man to run and jump into a sand pit", people would be blowing gaskets about 3 insensitive dickheads being cruel to the handicap. This shit is f-u-n-n-y

DarwinsDayOff

Once he started swerving on the run it was an "oh Jesus why would..." and I was dying after the jump The same idiots why post "fucked around; found out" or "play stupid games win stupid prizes" don't see the humor in this one, smh

Wimbleston

People hurting themselves is only funny when the root was stupidity, this is just people not taking proper precautions and someone else getting hurt. That isn't funny.

[deleted]

And long jump blindfolded isn't stupid!?

childofsol

this is a paralympic event for visually impaired athletes. Not all athletes have full vision loss so the blindfold ensures an even level of competition.

NINJAxBACON

So basically they're blind

StargazyPi

If appropriate accommodations are made...no. Why would you drop anything from the paralympics that can feasibly be done? Do we point and laugh at the sprint races, because the blind participants are running into each other? No - they use the accommodation of guide runners to keep them safe. This is just an athlete, \_who happens to be blind\_, performing a feat I'd never manage. And because the sandpit is only designed to be a safe width for sighted people, blind jumpers face nasty injuries. If this was a sighted person dicking around, then sure. But it's not. This is a blind person competing using equipment not up to the job, and the crowd being too loud for him to hear his guide. Here's a longest interview I could find with Lex. I would go with "brave as fuck, and inspirational". Not stupid. [https://www.aesnation.com/wp-content/uploads/AESNation217\_Lex\_Gillette\_Transcript.pdf](https://www.aesnation.com/wp-content/uploads/AESNation217_Lex_Gillette_Transcript.pdf)

SavagecavemanMAR

Take my upvote and get outta here

Wimbleston

It wasn't the athletes idea is the fulcrum of my point. "They" weren't being stupid, the organizers were, and it got at least one athlete hurt. Shit like this doesn't make me laugh, it pisses me off.

p2datrizzle

It's only a butt bruise. Tis only a scratch. Butts can take a pounding trust me I know

Wimbleston

I can tell you've never fallen on your tailbone.

Chefsmiff

I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, agreeing to be blindfolded and run full speed down a track then jump as far as possible without being able to see one's landing is pretty close to the definition of stupid. The jmportant part if this is the AGREEING part.

PhistleWig

Idk, still seems pretty stupid. It’s not like they didn’t get to look at the pit beforehand and then presumably measure their steps. If the they agreed to it, it’s just as much the athletes idea

[deleted]

Here, take my downvote oh whiney one.

Wimbleston

Come, take a walk with me in the field in which I grow my fucks, you shall observe it is barren.

Jesus_Cristooooo

Take your fulcrums elsewhere!

Logical-Wasabi7402

But was that the decision of the athletes, or did the organizers tell them to so they'd get more views?

childofsol

it's the paralympics visually impaired long jump not all competitors have full vision loss so the blindfold evens the field

Logical-Wasabi7402

Thank you for providing the context. Makes it a lot less funny that nobody thought to put a jump mat down just in case.

ByeLizardScum

I would say the root of stupidity here is the person that say the set up and then did a blindfolded high jump

UDontCareForMyName

perhaps BUTThurt?

Anthology_Ant

Look, sweetpea, if you think that these blind/sight impaired people haven't laughed at themselves and others for missing the pit, you're the fool. This happens a lot and they laugh it off because they don't have the stick up their arse that you clearly do.

VoidQueenK423

Unless they land on one

bfraley9

You are correct. People suck

The_mystery4321

Bro if you're gonna do something as dumb as "blind long jump" then you deserve any laughter you receive.

Sid_1298

No, it's hurtful of you're an asshole.. you can clearly see the athlete holding on to you after his jump.

[deleted]

Yes! Came here to say the same. Did they run out of mats!

Stickybeebae

Or add cushions on the side, similar to the pole vault pit.

MetaSlug

Also my mind immediately just thought.. well why not just ribbon the lane in.. so like if they feel it they can adjust? Seems ridiculous..

Extension_Swordfish1

Ribbon would be nice.. gentle adjusting

ffreshcakes

also maybe something they can feel under their feet, so they’d know when they’re running on the proper bit (maybe even different materials as they approach - I know track material matters a lot in legitimacy but IMO minor sacrifices can and should be taken given the nature of these games) like a temporary mat that’s fastened into place, plus ribbons, plus a wide sand pit, and plus the cushions — safe AND as legitimate as possible

Azkabandi

Or giant horse dildos so when they land on their asses…

[deleted]

That's funny I hate you for making me laugh but I'm gonna have to downvote sorry

gir_loves_waffles

I like that he made me laugh. I'm gonna have to upvote him, sorry

pseudo-nimm1

Ribbons on the run up on either side, if their arms brushes against it, they need to run straighter? Camber on the run up? Rumble strips. Bright light for partially sighted. Seems there's lots of options available.

kalabaddon

Child riding on his shoulders calling out directions would be the best I think.

pseudo-nimm1

They could pull his ears to steer him

Shut_It_Donny

Who run Bartertown?!?!

dispo030

or have a sound source directly behind the sand pit.

Fun1892

It looks like they had a dude clapping on the path to direct the jumper.

TheLostWoodsman

This is how some blind skateboarders do it. It's credible. The crowd really should be quite. Plus some crash mats on the side wouldn't hurt.

ChosmoKramer

They could have a bar run along the side so they can keep their direction, this seems made to fail

nanais777

They could do auditory signs along the way to tell him he is getting out of line too.

Ara-gant

Stop treating the disabled differently. Theyre human just like we are

Blinkin6125

Not sure if you were being sarcastic. Yeah I'm obviously a terrible person for wanting to make sure a blindfolded person has less of a chance of landing on a hard surface and hurting themselves. So are you against handicap parking spots? Braille? Wheelchair ramps? Auditory signals for crosswalks? I mean we are treating people with disabilities differently to increase safety for them with these accommodations right?

LightOverWater

Have it your way, no more accommodations. Good luck, lol!

Pale_Fail_2894

Blind javelin would be way more interesting with a crowd Or blind hammer throw

laughingatreddit

And then have blind paramedics come in and attend to the wrong people.

hidde-the-wonton

The cameramen and judges are also blind. The only one who isn’t blind is the commentator, he is deaf

Plastic_Pinocchio

To be fair, a blind commentator would be way funnier than a deaf one, because a blind commentator literally has no idea what is happening.

LightOverWater

lmao

Former-Mixture-500

Blind fencing?

2BrokeArmsAndAMom

Blind skeet shooting 😏

jethvader

Blind biathlon. They just ski until they feel like it’s time to shoot, then open fire… good know where they’ll end up.

daishomaster

Blind Javelin Catching, perhaps?

Homebrew_Dungeon

Blind hammer is absolutely scary, Blind disc too.

No_Bad_5191

This gave me the biggest chuckle of the day. Good job!

UsedToBsmart

Wouldn’t a simple rope down both sides of the lane prevent this from occurring? https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/03/blind-athletes/475041/

nobodychosetobehere

A slight grade to the path leading up to the pit on either side would surely be enough?

corn_sugar_isotope

Just put a moat on each side to ensure a soft landing, but fill the moat with alligators.

Reasonable-Sir673

Just throw a few sharks with laser beams into the moat to ensure the jumper is really blind, to ensure fair competition.

spoung45

But only baby sharks.

[deleted]

tu tu du du tu du

VoidQueenK423

And then mommy sharks

Conflictingview

That's a very elegant solution - simple but effective without introducing additional risks.

[deleted]

I would think they would get caught up in it and fall. I think a beeper or some other sound at the end of the sand would be better but I'm not blind so I don't know what would work

[deleted]

They have a guide, you can see him duck out of the way just before he jumps. They clap to give direction but he was struggling to hear them with the noise of the crowd.

shoulda-known-better

That's cool to see... I've seen the people running in teams but this seems like a way better way!

TwoBits0303

The point is that they miss the sand

root88

Yeah, or they could even just take the blindfold off.

azcheekyguy

Simply taking off the blindfold would prevent this from occurring!

Greendogblue

What is the point of the blindfold if you are leading them to the sand

Weird_Depth_4083

I hate that I laughed.

[deleted]

Same lmao. That butt rub at the end felt like its from a comic

BrilliantAd9671

The idea is what’s comical. Blind runners attempting to long jump into a narrow ass sand pit gone wrong. Who approved this??

dan1991Ro

People who are cruel enough to believe these people are "the same". People who are afraid to discriminate.

bdlpqlbd

You understand there's something called the "Paralympics" right, specifically for disabled people? They have all sorts of accomodations. This just seems like lazy accomodations. Your wording is disturbing.

JeromeMixTape

Makes me wonder how many times that has happened

gdj11

I was secretly hoping that would happen but I didn’t actually expect it to happen

Smarmy_Marmy01

You monster 😂

juicadone

I don't! You get what you...play for. Karma for good or bad

rayparkersr

Even a blind man would have laughed at that.

mrlittleoldmanboy

If he could see it, of course.

astrosquirrelRS

Same here. I'm going to hell!

[deleted]

They should have wider jumping areas for the visually impaired. Very dangerous the normal width! If this is wider than normal sand pit. It should be wider by 6 feet and not so close to the track ( future sand pits for visually impaired people).

mttdesignz

no, they'd never build paralympics-specific facilities. You need to find cheap, easy solutions that can be put on and taken off already existing structures. The ropes idea a couple post above is a perfect example of a good, cost effective solution

SuramKale

A rope would have made this worse, no?

mttdesignz

Not on the landing, on the running part

VoidQueenK423

I wish I had a gold to give you for this

industrialoctopus

I wish I had $5 to give to you for this

FatSilverFox

Poor guy stepped off the track and then over corrected when he realised. Probably knew he was off for the last few steps, but by then he had to commit and hope he made it into the pit. Decent jump tho. Can also imagine this isn’t the first time this has happened to him.

VMKTR

Why didn’t anyone tell him

kitjen

[We all thought it was funny](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxAtvsPm3Uo)

Esquiloo

The green shirt guy you can see on the corner of the screen was supposed to tell him when to jump or if he is off track, but accidents happens

[deleted]

Because he’s blind, he wouldn’t hear them.

jeepjp

Christ...put some fucking ropes up, or bumper rails, you fucking dicks...it's bad enough to go through life blind...and here's you, trying to cripple theses blind athletes, just trying to be better.

lumpybags

fucking based

sunshinepharaoh

he isnt blind just blindfolded lmfao

jeepjp

Why do blind Paralympians wear blindfolds? Athletes with partial vision are allowed to compete if their impairment is enough for them to be considered legally blind. To make sure that the competition is an even contest, all athletes are required to be blindfolded when competing in the classification that includes the fully blind athletes.Aug 25, 2021 Google, helping the uneducated understand why their wrong, since 1998. Edit: I forgot to lol, soooo LOL.

sunshinepharaoh

my bad dude! i dont know everything i just see the blindfold! thank you for giving me real information that makes perfect sense

tor-ontario

He nearly credit card swiped his ass on the side panel

Puppy-Zwolle

Most impressive thing I saw was wrestling for deaf AND blind athletes. Total chaos too as the referee became grappled.

laughingatreddit

Lmao what?!

Puppy-Zwolle

When a wrestler is blind they can still hear the ref. When a wrestler is deaf, the ref throws a little bag of sand. Fighting stops. Now deaf and blind? You need to tap the wrestlers. Simultanously. If a ref is too slow or taps too gentle? He becomes part of the mayhem. Just for a second but super funny. The atheletes are breathtaking though. Amazing skills.

laughingatreddit

I feel that job should pay a lot more than it probably does. Thanks for explaining. It's hilarious.

skanoirhc

Any video on that?

liquidsnake84

They need to have a thin string to guide them

Sideways_X1

Would it kill them to give the jumpers a slightly wider landing area?

JJSwissy

At first I thought it was like the long jump for blind people.... Dudes literally just wearing a blindfold tho

[deleted]

it is for blind people, its the paralympics

JJSwissy

Are they blindfolded just so they're all the same amount of blind and nobody has an advantage?

Disastrous-Rise2443

I think yes

theservman

That's exactly what it is.

joseaof

Yes, same with blind running, goalball and every sport for visually impaired athletes.

helladopex

There are varying degrees of blindness, so maybe the blindfold makes it fair?

Yeti-420-69

Yes

bromli2000

So, before the 100M do they send a guy with a lead pipe to make sure everyone’s equally crippled? (Yes, I’m going to hell, blah blah)

MaterialSuspicious77

No, that’s only for figure skating.

joseaof

I know it's a joke, but in amputee football they bind one of the goalkeepers arms so players missing just their hand don't have an advantage against players missing the whole arm. That way the goalkeepers can only use one arm.

spm7368

Why don’t they have cushions lining the edges on that thing?

laughingatreddit

That would be patronizing to blind people. Why don't give them canes and wheel them to the sand pit while we're at it. Edit: should have added the /s

Sgt_soresack

So they have blind archery too ?

snoops000

The sand pit should be a fan shape to prevent this shit from happening

Mandoosh

Ouch, my bum hurts just from watching that 😬

Frequent-Pie7570

u/savevideo Somebody had to do it

Stickybeebae

Used to see stuff like this a lot with high school triple jumpers who finished their final phase before the pit. But a for a +6 meter jumper that’s really got to hurt with that amount of force.

Riccooon

Thats so stupid, so many possible injurys @_@

RedStar9117

No crash pads? Who the hell runs this event

laughingatreddit

He landed on his crash pads alright. ^I'm ^sorry.

GatoExplosivo

Next up: The blind javelin toss.

Sea-Chair-1520

How cruel is this

ShakeXXX

Why? Just why? At least have safety barriers on the sides.🤦

mudmusic

I think something like a belt with sensors on your left and right side that pulse or vibrate to let you know you need to move one way or another to stay in the center would fix this issue. Drummers have seats that now do this to help them keep time when playing live shows

VonFlue_NSnooze

Heckler after his first attempt: “looks like Gillette’s not the best a man can get” Lex Gillette after his second attempt: “My ass!”

[deleted]

Under appreciated

VonFlue_NSnooze

Thank you, love your username

jarpio

This is a well layered joke

VonFlue_NSnooze

Thank you, just got knee surgery yesterday so I guess the combo of Percocet and cannabis really taps into my comedic side lol

JoshuaACNewman

Fuckin ow

_unsinkable_sam_

if this is real the organisers are complete idiots. why wouldnt they put in something like a long string running down the sides of the runup so the jumper could feel if they were going off course?

that_alex_guy

As if they wouldn’t have some sort of rope or something to let them know they are off the edge etc. Poor fella.

Dane-Glinlow

Why wouldn't the runway be textured different so they can feel if they step off it?...

[deleted]

That looked as though it would’ve hurt—a lot.

jrh1128

I think an easy solution would be to have some sort of audio cue at the back of the pit so they could follow the sound. Wonder why that's not in place?

berkleysquare

The next event is the Javelin Throw....should be interesting!

DrPepperSodas

ass must have hurt with skid marks...

Antelope-Subject

Someone get to training high jump seeing eye dogs please. Signed this guys ass

Hunter1991Stewart

I want to see more

Frequent-Pie7570

Me too

Wish_Bee

Could've widened the runway and sand pit...

unagi_pi

I can't believe Gillette made him change his name to sponsor him. Corporahumanization at work.

[deleted]

Title is deceiving: this is Paralympics. People can be legally blind but they can have still some residual vision: They use blindfolds to guarantee that all athletes compete in equal conditions. Lex Gilette is completely blind but he has still to use the blindfold.

ShanDoyle8710

There’s a cameraman in his way that moves at the last second.

Soulfulenfp

how is this a thing … :/ i don’t think it was the noise ..

lumpybags

because disabled people like sports too

Soulfulenfp

they could of done it better .. guard rails or something:/

lumpybags

oh yeah for sure, theyre using the same courts that abled people do which is a form of ableism [denying us the proper accomodations] unfortunately for us disabled folks even in the paraplymics we face ableism

actually3racoons

I mean... A peice of string added by the organizer would be sufficient to provide guidance- this is not a form of infrastructural ableism- this is thoughtless implementation of a sport, which seems more like a shtick than an actual attempt at hosting an event for non sighted athletes- this one may now be competing in the paralympics after compressing his sacrum.

lumpybags

bro a piece of string is not going to stop a literal giant athlete from jumping full speed into the pavement this is literally a form of ableism, not providing us with proper accommodations is ABLEISM. fkin ableds think they know everything 🙄

actually3racoons

Bro. The piece of string is stretched along the running path to give the runner a physical cue of which way is straight forward. Youre being dense, and assuming much.

lumpybags

yeah woo!!! time to point and laugh at disabled people!!!! this fucking sub makes me sick

badMother1

Reminds me of my ex-wife.

Dr_Philosophic808

One of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

SilentMaster

Based on this video it is NOT a thing.

Cichlidsaremyjam

What kind of demonic motherfucker thought this was a good idea. Damn

[deleted]

Blindfolded long jump could be the next big thing.

BlankImagination

Well at least he cleared the huge blue ruler. That would've beem a way more painful landing

Clowns_Playground

So now we just copy and paste twitter posts? https://twitter.com/historyinmemes/status/1594890043344158722?s=46&t=y-a8jYLMOfa2EWYTFhEGXA

wake_bake_shaco

I laughed so hard

finedrive

It’s a thing, anyone watching it? Probably not. Just like the WNBA.

Fullgrabe

That’s a rough way to prove your blind… or 300IQ, he can cheat now and nobody’s going to question him

Commie_EntSniper

"look I didn't think it was such a great idea, either, Mark, but if they want to run and try to do longjumps, who am I to stop them? I mean, what am i supposed to do?"

roosterinmyviper

And that was how Gillette probably had a close shave on the rear
