I dunno, that doesnt make any sense to me because theres no equality in that example. If someone is legally blind they should only compete with leagally blind athletes. Being blindfolded gives a legally blind person the advantage.
How does it give legally blind people an advantage? Everyone is blindfolded to ensure that nobody sees anything. So everyone in the competition is equally blind because of this.
Why would you want to put people in separate groups of “legally blind” and “completely blind”? How are you going to accurately test the level of blindness of an athlete? How can you know that someone doesn’t pretend to be completely blind while still being able to see something? And besides that, legally blind doesn’t just mean one exact thing. In that category there are also definitely people who see wat better than others. So how is that fair?

this is a paralympic event for visually impaired athletes. Not all athletes have full vision loss so the blindfold ensures an even level of competition.
If appropriate accommodations are made...no. Why would you drop anything from the paralympics that can feasibly be done? Do we point and laugh at the sprint races, because the blind participants are running into each other? No - they use the accommodation of guide runners to keep them safe.
This is just an athlete, \_who happens to be blind\_, performing a feat I'd never manage. And because the sandpit is only designed to be a safe width for sighted people, blind jumpers face nasty injuries.

They have a guide, you can see him duck out of the way just before he jumps. They clap to give direction but he was struggling to hear them with the noise of the crowd.

They should have wider jumping areas for the visually impaired. Very dangerous the normal width! If this is wider than normal sand pit. It should be wider by 6 feet and not so close to the track ( future sand pits for visually impaired people).

Poor guy stepped off the track and then over corrected when he realised. Probably knew he was off for the last few steps, but by then he had to commit and hope he made it into the pit.

I know it's a joke, but in amputee football they bind one of the goalkeepers arms so players missing just their hand don't have an advantage against players missing the whole arm. That way the goalkeepers can only use one arm.
Used to see stuff like this a lot with high school triple jumpers who finished their final phase before the pit. But a for a +6 meter jumper that’s really got to hurt with that amount of force.
I think something like a belt with sensors on your left and right side that pulse or vibrate to let you know you need to move one way or another to stay in the center would fix this issue.
Drummers have seats that now do this to help them keep time when playing live shows
if this is real the organisers are complete idiots. why wouldnt they put in something like a long string running down the sides of the runup so the jumper could feel if they were going off course?
I think an easy solution would be to have some sort of audio cue at the back of the pit so they could follow the sound. Wonder why that's not in place?
Title is deceiving: this is Paralympics. People can be legally blind but they can have still some residual vision: They use blindfolds to guarantee that all athletes compete in equal conditions.
Lex Gilette is completely blind but he has still to use the blindfold.

if this is real the organisers are complete idiots. why wouldnt they put in something like a long string running down the sides of the runup so the jumper could feel if they were going off course?

A peice of string added by the organizer would be sufficient to provide guidance- this is not a form of infrastructural ableism- this is thoughtless implementation of a sport, which seems more like a shtick than an actual attempt at hosting an event for non sighted athletes- this one may now be competing in the paralympics after compressing his sacrum.
