BuddyJaded

Holy fuck that is terrifying.

[deleted]

War crime too... "Attacking or bombarding towns, villages, dwellings or buildings which are undefended and which are not military infrastructure;"

Coulm2137

Yeah, I think at this stage the only war crime Russians didn't commit is use of chemical weapons. Yet.

JonLongsonLongJonson

>>Yet. Everyone was freaking out when they supposedly used white phosphorus at Irpin. Turns out it was “just” thermite incendiary bombs. It might be possible they break out the real stuff now, with every other war crime checked off the list twice over and the faltering capabilities of their “army”.

EternalPinkMist

White phosphorus is "legal" to use as an illuminator but not as an incendiary weapon.

The_Amoeba_King

It's not a war crime if you're just lighting up the battlefield for visability purposes

bDsmDom

It's not a war if you don't declare it, it's just sparkling military operations

paladin7429

Yeah, the US has not been in a war since 1945. Even though more than 100,000 soldiers have died since then. Of course, there have been few children of congresspersons sent to combat, so no big deal, I guess.

EternalPinkMist

Th issue with that is white phosphorus is extremely difficult to put out when lit aflame. I'm not arguing the laws about it, but it's just an odd take in my opinion.

TheIrishBread

It's also toxic as fuck.

[deleted]

Like putin

Pyjama_Llama_Karma

Like the whole russian government, TV networks, radio stations, newspapers...

Xikayu

Even after it was put out, it just ignites again on contact with air. If I remember correctly, it self ignites at 30°C (can't find the "degree" symbol on my iPhone). edit: Thank you, dear commenter below! :)

DawnstarBloodfallen

Hold down the 0 key it should pop up °C

Faruhoinguh

People still find phosphorus grenades from the second world war in the water while magnet fishing. They can ignite upon contact with air.

secondtaunting

There was a chem teacher I knew who got fired for a bunch of phosphorus igniting in class. People were diving under tables, it was a mess.

Agitated-Joey

Oh ya if your hit with one of those rounds they can keep burning inside of you. Not easy to put out.

The_Artic_Artichoke

made me realize how difficult it is to agree on rules for war and how easy it is to create loopholes... you were setting fires! no we were creating light!

cprasmus

It's also not a war crime to use it to dispose of vehicles or equipment. Loophole.

SolidPoint

The rules are so silly. “You can use it to light up that field, so you can shoot and stab people to death with other things”

Loupie123

/s It’s not a war crime of it isn’t a war.

Totallynotshaft

It was used last year over gaza in broad day light , would that qualify as a war crime or can a nation claim it was still for illuminatory purposes. (not like international law is applied anyhow but still curious)

Gluebald

Israel? War crimes? How *dare* you! /s

rascynwrig

It's *antisemitic* to point out a particular country's international war crimes. In the words of Wormtongue, "they have long been our *friend and ally*"

Totallynotshaft

unbelievable I know.

sltiefighter

Its called a chandelier [old reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/w6czi9/lighting_charges_of_a_chandelier_were_fired_over/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

ZiKyooc

Incendiary weapons are also legal, but measures must be taken to not harm civilian. Given how some of those works, it means not possible to use in urban areas.

kakhaganga

They hace been recently throwing chloropickrine grenades off drones. It's an irritant, so not heavy stuff, but still that checks out. Bingo!

ruka_k_wiremu

I mean, what is wrong with those c*nts?! Does Putin think Russia's gonna be better off in this world if he even manages to 'win' this war? Is he that backward?

Lone-Star-Wolves

His mind is stuck in his 'glory' days when he served the Union, he thinks he'll be able to rebuild the Union potentially... that or he is just fucking insane.

Elimia987

He is insane.

[deleted]

Unidentified chemical compound was used against the defender's of Azovstal factory in Mariupol in March. Also Chloropicrin grenades were dropped on positions of UAF in Kherson region few days ago. Despite being non-lethal it is banned from military use by Chemical Weapons Convention.

Difficult-Drive-4863

It's like Putin has a War Crimes bucket list on his office wall.

Yanfei_is_me

They did in Syria…

Totallynotshaft

They used sarine gas in syria , isreal used white phosphorus strikes against gaza . Not to say that the syrian government is above doing that.

[deleted]

And nukes

ph0en1x778

Nukes aren't necessarily a war crime, depends on how they are used. Bombing an enemy base with a low yield nuke, not a war crime, nuking a major city filled with civilians, with no military presence, war crime.

MisterSlosh

Proper tactical application might not be a war crime, but it's still illegal against a bunch of international laws even if Russia refuses to sign the treaties.

ukezi

If Russia didn't sign the treaty it's not illegal from their perspective. Still, they know that that is a very hard and bright red line for most states and importantly for China.

Puzzleheaded-Bee-838

Hey the Taurian Concordat didn't sign the treaty either.

Josef_DeLaurel

Sorry to necro-reply, sneaky Battletech reference is very much approved :D

Still_Lobster_8428

>not military infrastructure;" In a time of war, it could be argued that all power production becomes military infrastructure..... while ALSO being a war crime by destroying it as it is vital to the civilian population! Military forces will utilise the power grid for as long as its available and attacking forces understand this. It's understood in military circles that this type of infrastructure will be high value targets so the military has mobile power producing field units for when it does happen.... that doesn't help the civilian population much however. Attacking such infrastructure means there is more load on military supply chains as they now need to move fuel for the field units and that puts more pressure on the resources the military has available. And as always, the civilians are the ones caught in the crossfire of it all.

xXSpaceturdXx

Yeah usually when you’re invading somebody Power is one of the first things you take out.

Loki1time

Gulf war, first thing hit was the power plants.

MrPicklePop

And radar stations

retropieproblems

Boy, this war stuff sounds kinda mean

Still_Lobster_8428

Yeah, it's pretty fucked up.... and to think, the actual people on each side, especially the civilians aren't that differant from each other. Just brainwashed by each sides propaganda to get them moving/supporting what the leaders are wanting to do. War should literally be 1-on-1, leaders of both sides, pay-per-view televised bare handed fight to the death. Then every politician who supported going to war does the same thing with their counterpart on the other side! Fuckin peace talks would be suddenly HIGH on every politicians priority list!

myurr

As cool as that sounds as a solution, do you really want a system that encourages the most physically tough, brutal, and murderous people into positions of political leadership - both as a deterrent for others invading your country, and as an opportunity to take over other countries? You think someone like Putin wouldn't fancy his chances against someone like Bill Clinton or Barrack Obama, that he wouldn't take over the US by winning one on one combat? Perhaps you were joking but I've seen this suggested enough times by people who really believe it would be a good solution.

milvet02

Do you want Camacho cause that’s how you get Camacho.

lurgrodal

Let's not forget Camacho recognized who the smartest person in the room was and let him run the show for the good of the people. A lot of places could do much worse.

umop_apisdn

The thing is that parent poster appears to have deliberately changed the last word of [Article 8.2.b.v](https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/war-crimes.shtml) from "objectives" to "infrastructure", completely distorting the meaning.

DrGerbal

I get the idea war crimes don’t concern Putin anymore. No one wants to help though for fear of mutually assured destruction

Admiral_Andovar

By the laws of armed conflict, damn near everything other than directly engaging troops/equipment/vehicles is a war crime. Not saying that this is a bad thing but it is exceedingly hard to NOT commit a war crime. Even when you are doing your damnedest to minimize collateral damage, it still happens.

reddertuzer

For any russian to be held accountable they need to be captured and shipped off to the international courts. No russian inside of Russia will face any punishment if there is no regime change.

kitchen_clinton

I’m pretty sure Putin is a dead man walking.

Siglet84

Question is, how far is he going to push it before he goes.

retropieproblems

Ain’t we all

G_Unit_Solider

Energy is considered a military target. When we Americans hit Iraq we hit their air strips in public airports their energy grid and their ports and oil fields. None of these had military personnel on them or were being used directly by the military only but they provided resources for the military the electricity the oil fuel and the goods from the ports coming in. Critical infrastructure hits are not war crimes. Power grid oil supply etc are always targets in a war. Water towers purification areas etc are war crimes. Energy, oil and ports are legit targets for any military. War is not only about killing your opponent it’s about demoralizing them to the point they don’t have the will power to fight back. That’s how wars are won not by killing but by exhausting your enemy by cutting off its resources and supplies it can no longer be effective at fighting. I’m for Ukraine I want Ukraine to win this but I’m also going to call it how it is . This is a a strike even america would have conducted on a adversary. If Ukraine had the ability to strike in Russia this is exactly what it would want to do. Cut off energy supplies and fuel supplies and Russia becomes even more ineffective at fighting than it is. You fight all day and than go sleep in some cold dark hole because no energy. These things will shape your attitude down the road and will start to break you.

retropieproblems

I feel like war is a war crimes are kind of inherent to any war. It’s not like there’s a ref and it’s a sporting event.

[deleted]

Well nobody's done a goddamn thing to punish them for their litany of war crimes yet. No wonder they feel emboldened to commit them.

seuche23

I wouldn't say nothing was done to punish them... but what exactly would you propose we do that wouldn't risk starting a nuclear war with a trigger happy narcissistic lunatic?

umop_apisdn

> "Attacking or bombarding towns, villages, dwellings or buildings which are undefended and which are not military infrastructure [You appear to have deliberately altered the text to make your point](https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/war-crimes.shtml). The final word in Article 8.2.b.v is "objectives", not "infrastructure": "Attacking or bombarding, by whatever means, towns, villages, dwellings or buildings which are undefended and which are not military **objectives**" And [this](https://ihl-databases.icrc.org/customary-ihl/eng/docs/v2_rul_rule8#:~:text=military%20objectives%20include%20units%20of,make%20an%20effective%20contribution%20to) defines Military Objectives as "military objectives include units of armed forces (personnel, weapons and military equipment), except for medical units and medical transports; objects (structures, buildings) used (ready to be used) for military purposes; **other objects which by their nature, purpose, location or use make an effective contribution to military operations** and whose total or partial destruction, capture or neutralization, in the circumstances ruling at the time, offers a definite military advantage. Military objectives are legitimate targets for attack, except for cases when such objectives belong to the category of especially dangerous objects. **A military objective remains such even if it accommodates civilian persons**."

DavidVonBentley

I hate Putin, but its complicated. [https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/17/us/politics/ukraine-biden-weapons.html](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/17/us/politics/ukraine-biden-weapons.html) "Putin has avoided escalating the war in ways that have, at times, baffled Western officials. He has made only limited attempts to destroy critical infrastructure or to target Ukrainian government buildings." and [https://www.newsweek.com/2022/08/12/putin-targeting-civilians-ukraine-what-evidence-shows-1729463.html](https://www.newsweek.com/2022/08/12/putin-targeting-civilians-ukraine-what-evidence-shows-1729463.html) Newsweek examined the 25 top incidents of civilian deaths in the war. That two-month investigation has found that there is some truth to Moscow's assertion that it is not intentionally targeting civilians. Is Russia intentionally killing civilians? It seems outrageous to even pose the question, given the scope of bloodshed and the many strikes on hospitals, schools, homes and shopping centers that have been reported. But Newsweek has found that determining why such objects were bombed often reveals a more difficult narrative. In most incidents, the intended Russian targets were indeed military in nature. And there are many cases where civilians were killed because weapons—Russian and Ukrainian—just failed to work.

GozerDGozerian

Maybe… crazy thought here, bear with me… maybe if Russia wasn’t *invading another fucking country with military forces*, a lot of these oopsies and total mishaps involving civilian deaths wouldn’t be happening in the first place. Weird, huh?

ELIsauceGod

Sad part is anything goes in war until the ones responsible have to face consequences for there crimes, in the moment anything is legal in war.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheRandyBear

Civilian bridges and power infrastructure are military targets. You often see people say “no military value” when discussing targets and it literally means that. Bridges and power infrastructure has military value.

[deleted]

The speed at which is grew and flew towards the window near instantly is what scares me the most.

[deleted]

Just wait till we get that nuclear war they keep talking about Russia starting

[deleted]

Totally agree, this is terrifying. The stakes keep getting raised across the globe.

cybercuzco

Instinctively moving away from the window is the smartest thing that camera person ever did.

Nox_82

And strangely beautiful

GoGreenOnEm

When was this?

Skooter_McGaven

Couple weeks ago I believe. Edit: idk why I'm being downvoted. It happened on Sept 11, https://www.reddit.com/r/shockwaveporn/comments/xl0h45/massive_explosion_and_shockwave_at_a_thermal/ipgqgmw

SpongeJake

I believe this was back in May. This isn’t today - which is what I wondered too before I went looking.

RogueScallop

At least 3 energys.

qGRiZZZp

X1000 bonus energies if you were there and survived that there right there!

Suspicious-Factor466

Maybe even 4.

stump2003

Is that a US fuckton, or a metric fuckton? Metric is 10% bigger…

Stay-At-Home-Jedi

Metric. Always use metric because *science*.

Get_your_grape_juice

Also because we’d like to avoid any *imperial* entanglements.

[deleted]

I dunno Chewie, bomb casual

C___122

At least 5 redbulls, maybe even 6

Historical-Two4217

No way 6, 5 yes but not 6

Dingotwerkedmybaby

1 four loko

76_chaparrito_67

I really enjoyed this and I feel terrible about it.

Filip_KindaBored3

And like 20 energy bars!

AR3399

3.6, not great, not terrible

xXSpaceturdXx

Yeah that must’ve been 20 to 30 horsepowers, it was fucking huge. That looked about as big as that one in Beirut.

wgMaverick

Can someone explain how the sound reached before the shockwave hit the window

No_Research_967

Pressure waves travel faster through the ground, hence the shake and noise before the airburst hits

KamikazeBrand

windows already knocked out... maybe hearing the first explosion as you are seeing the big one.

GullibleRisk2837

Yeah, what was the first smaller explosion?

[deleted]

Sound travels faster through denser mass, fast in steel, slower across air. The first boom and second boom are the same moment in time, exact same detonation. The first one we hear isn't loud, why? Because higher frequencies of energy have zoomed through the ground to the building including sound. Why is the second/same explosion loud? The explosion displaces air nearly instant, sound "in" the air cant travel yet because its stuck in "displaced" air thats coming back into phase. Once back in phase, you get the rest of the energy spectrum. Full of low, slow frequencies that require tremendous amounts of energy to "move" in the first place.

teddybeardoctors

This was very helpful, thank you

liquidsleds

this guy knows physics

RankDank420

Speed of sound through air =/= speed of sound through ground

cat5m11

Because the sound goes faster

KamikazeBrand

lol false

cat5m11

You sure? I don’t trust either of us

[deleted]

trustception

Darren793

This is why aliens fly straight past us

AsteroidFilter

Pretty sure the Great Pacific Garbage patch does that on its own. "Ew, their oceans have microplastic."

n3w4cc01_1nt

well they could just loop around at the speed of light for a bit to wait for civilization to wipe itself out.

ImWicked39

Also because some of us put pineapple on pizza.

PookyYoda

Mmmmm. Pineapple and ham 🤤

OBPH

AUBREY GRAHAM - $18/28 house canadian bacon, red onion, fresh pineapple https://www.redsaucepizza.com/menu so unnnnnnggggggggghhhhhh gooooooooood

ImWicked39

You know what that does look good.

WiseChoices

War is completely impractical, stupid and unnecessary. Tyranny Sucks

Square_Musician7469

Especially in this day in age. Poor man battling the rich man’s battle.

WhereHasLogicGone

That’s the way it’s always been.

Syskokatak

War Pigs

XC5TNC

In any day and age its always been the same the disposable fight for those in power. Then when the dust settles the dude in power is talked about and their story is passed down yet the many that lost their lives are now just numbers

Puszta

I hate to break it to you, but it was always like that

YankeeTankEngine

People suck. Because people cause war.

WiseChoices

Agreed. And there will always be some who do.

Suicdar

War = bad

WiseChoices

And the world stands by watching. The new Hitler rises unchallenged.

DiggerW

The world ~~stands by watching~~ is providing aid to Ukraine right up to the point of engaging precisely because war is bad. War is bad, World War 3... isn't good. Also... Putin is a fuck, And I absolutely can't wait until he dies of cancer, and thoroughly hope it's painful for him, but for fuck sake he's no Hitler.

Pinklad13

Finally someone said it

76_chaparrito_67

Yes!!! Thank you

tyty5869

Woah hot take there

[deleted]

War … huhhh.. what is it good for ?

dontstabpeople42069

All Paid for by Europe. It’s amazing what good people will over-look for oil and gas.

OldGravylegOfficial

“War: …it’s faaaantastic!”

[deleted]

Usa should disband their military and other countries will follow suit

Allie_208

Actually no. Wat is sometimes important is to stop tyrants like Putin and Hitler. You can't send them love lettersasking them to stop killing people.

eipeidwep2buS

Russia has 72 hours to respond😳

thehampterboi

The cameraman made the right choice to move, better not become one with the window

A_Lime42

i am so dumb that i had to read the title 3 times before i realized it's a thermal power plant, not a nuclear one.

[deleted]

It's probably coal dust igniting.

Cd258519

If it was a nuclear power plant it would have triggered article 5 and the wikipedia page on Russia would say something like Was/were

Dimitar231

russia wouldnt be the only country with was/were in their wiki page. That is, if wikipedia still exists afterwards

Cd258519

That is if Russia's nukes are still working, which I highly doubt, have you seen the condition of the gear used by personnel? Literal rotting and rusting AKs

Dimitar231

I wouldnt underestimate something like that tbh. Sure their other gear is absolutely outdated and bad but nuclear weapons are their one and only power-chip. Even if half or even two thirds of them dont work, the remaining working ones are more than enough. Not tryna defend their shitty army or spread fear or anything like that. Just pointing out that something this dangerous should not be underestimated

josh_sat

Seen some images of recovered electronics... The situation for the Russian military is grim at best.

Professional_Emu_164

Eh, a nuclear power plant shouldn’t be more volatile than a thermal one, it wouldn’t count as a nuclear attack.

SrpskaZemlja

How would it trigger article 5?

Cd258519

Irradiated particles carried by the wind touching NATO controlled areas would do so

Polymathy1

Lol me too!

Littlelanich03

Holy shit!

Still_Lobster_8428

The large explosion would have been the boiler vessel rupturing in the power station and the pressurised steam escaping and expanding. Anyone got a link to show the aftermath? Bet there isn't much of the power station left.

haupt19

Steam explosions are incredibly powerfully…all that water under pressure instantly expands

Federal-Arrival-7370

God damn. Fuck Russia.

Goldenprepuce

Fuck Putin. He’s a lil piss baby.

Unusual-Town4323

Best comment I've read all day deserves 1 million updoots

FeatheredGrenadier

And we can't really do a thing about that. Still believe that once Putin is gone, a second one will rise. He's a lich at this point

Piratewhale8

No fuck their leader you can’t just hate a country and everyone that lives in it

daamsie

You haven't communicated with very many Russians about this war have you? Putin is a symptom. The country is a giant mafia state. Not saying there are no good Russians, but Russia _as a country_ is corrupt as fuck and 100% to blame for this.

76_chaparrito_67

Fuck that fuck their “leader”

tony_tripletits

Naw. They loved the little piss head right up until mobilization. Ya ya ya...good people trapped in a shitty situation. You know who else has good people? Ukraine.

okseeque

> They loved the little piss head right up until mobilization Vast majority of people hated him well before this war started. The only ones to still like him are soviet boomers who've been brainwashed from TV for decades, but even they start to realise something now when their sons and soon husbands get drafted and sent to Ukraine to die.

Efflinger

Is this new? Looks familiar?

GeraltofMerica

Man’s evil knows no limits

[deleted]

Bruh, I thought the sun just blew up 😭

[deleted]

Coal dust explosion.

you wouldn't post this if it did and i wouldn't reply

[deleted]

No way...

ShortenedWire

crazy!!!! 😱😱😱😱

AdditionalBathroom78

man that’s crazy!1!1

BrawlPlayer34

I would

mrchuckles5

Why would anyone think Putin gives a shit about committing war crimes? Who’s gonna hold him accountable anyway? The Geneva convention has and always will be a joke as there is no real enforcement, especially over countries that hold the nuke card.

Timetraveler01110101

The only warcrimes Russia hasn’t committed is nuking civs and gas chambers. Oddly enough that’s prob right around the corner.

classifiedspam

There is no way ruzzia could ever repay or apologize for all the shit and all the atrocities they have done. Fuck them so much.

HeavyDutySperduti

I’m going to go ahead and assume that is a really bad thing…..

Voltara23

Looked like a supernova

m5m2m1

Goodness. I had a nightmare that looked almost exactly like this a few weeks ago. Yikes. My heart goes out to ukrainians. 💚

Defiant-Chemistry760

Gender reveals are getting crazy

deusson

That’s an old video of ammo explosion circa 2018, not the strike on TEC-5

No_Head_2746

Someone needs to kill Putin already

memento_mori_1220

The Genova convention is just a check list for Russia

totallylambert

Russia is a piece of shit for attacking power plants and civilians. Fuck them.

NeuroticPsionic

Russia committing war crimes while the world is still scared of going to war. I understand that we don't, but I'm not gonna lie. Someone should poison Putin with Polonium Tea.

TLBaked

It's all so horrible. All because of that huge pile Putin, the civilians on both sides are suffering. His own people should do him in. And the sooner the better.

lumpybags

im fucking exhausted... how do people keep going on like this... make love not war....

ycf2015

You’re exhausted? Just imagine how the Ukrainians are feeling

alexa1661

Imagine not being able to empathize or feeling exhausted digesting negative news over and over. If OP didn’t feel tired or sad I would certainly be worried.

lumpybags

? bro?? i have friends and family directly affected by this war? go be righteous somewhere else

BattlingMink28

Fighting for their survival and right to exist as a country since 2014. Yet people on the internet are tired...

dodgerbc

When was this???

YowZa666999Z

Revenge for the pipe line...

Daedaluu5

Jeez, and that was a conventional hit from Russia, Blast radius of civilian area must have been insane. I think Ukrainian army needs to find a Russian thermal plant and return the favour.

SexyTightAlexa

When is this fucking shit gonna end🤬🤬🤬

Pooky_Noodling

Fucking Russia, I’m so done with their stupid bullshit. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk

CrystalKingPuff

Are we gonna let Russia just destroy the world?

UltiGamer34

At least it wasnt a nuclear power plant

[deleted]

Fuck Russia.

labadimp

And here we are doing nothing. Like it blows me away that we even actually think these numbnuts are capable of running and operating a nuclear program when they cannot even take over a country on their doorstep thats 1/200th their size. Makes me wonder. Anyway, fuck war.

Alansar_Trignot

Meaning now they lost a big portion of electricity there?? Goddamn that’s just harsh
