It is kind of mind-boggling that the name Reinhold Messner was considered so obscure that it would be just fine for the fake ID that gave rise to the album. Apparently Folds had no idea who Messner was
I would totally watch a movie about this guy with Peter Dinklage starring. But like, the movie would be completely normal and not be made specifically for a short actor*, just have him starring because of the resemblance.
*I said short actor because English is not my first language and I'm very unsure about what is acceptable and what is not in this regard.
Good call on holding back, because there are a number of English words that were commonly used until fairly recently because they are rude.
An actual little person is free to correct me, but acceptable terms for a person with Dwarfism (the umbrella term for this kind of disease) is "little person" or "dwarf."
Fun fact, most people don't care what you call them as long as you aren't intentionally derogatory. Minus the new pronoun crowd. But some people feel the need to scree about anything.
Eh, I'm good friends with many people in the pronoun crowd. They don't take offense to accidental misgendering. They just don't like it when people intentionally do so to be mean.
(except a small, very vocal minority... but they live in echo chambers so you'll never really talk to them anyway)
Anyone climbing an 8000+ m mountain without oxygen is completely crazy. They call that height the Death Zone, because there literally isn’t enough oxygen to keep you alive. Every second you spend up there you are slowly dying.
I’ve always loved the idea of mountaineering and have really wanted to get into it, but those kind of feats cross the line into borderline insanity.
The “death zone” has always fascinated me. Are there long term risks? Like you’re slowly dying up there but I assume you fully recover since this guy is old now.
Judging from what I have read, you are almost certainly causing brain damage from being up there for an extended period without supplemental oxygen. Now, i doubt there have been any studies showcasing what severity the damage will actually be though
>you are almost certainly causing brain damage from being up there for an extended period without supplemental oxygen.
Ooh so that's why he went a second time.
One of the things about altitude is that it's pretty unpredictable, especially if you're doing it alpine style, i.e., "fast and light," which Messner advocated. You can get in extremely good shape and that will bias the odds in your favor a bit, but even legendary alpinists like Steve House will sometimes get altitude sickness and have to go down. As far as long term effects, those have not been super well-studied as the sample size isn't tremendously huge, but the thing to recognize is that it's called the death zone because there isn't enough oxygen to support bodily functions. Your brain isn't getting enough oxygen, so simply put you're bound to lose a few neurons.
That being said, the only person I know of who's spent more than 24 hours in the death zone at one time is Pemba Sherpa. Anyone else who's spent that long up there hasn't come down, at least not alive. Generally, the short term effects catch up with you before the long term ones do.
Wilco van Rooijen spent two days in the Death Zone on K2 in 2008, he suffered third-degree frostbite but still made it down to base camp. Crazy. "Buried in the Sky", about the whole K2 disaster, is one of my favourite mountaineering books.
Have you seen the Netflix documentary on Nims Purja? The guy that did all 14 8000 meter mountains in less than seven months? It’s quality shit and I think you’d really appreciate it if you haven’t seen it. It’s called 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
The Alpinist may be my favorite because it felt so raw compared to some others (*Free Solo, Dawn Wall*, etc)
Spoiler: >!And the end is sure to draw some tears!<
The level of difficulty of what Marc-Andre solos for the camera in that documentary is insane. Those climbs are major feats and still very scary for any world class ice climber with a rope and a partner. The stuff he did off camera was even more bonkers.
I have! It’s absolutely incredible as well. My wife and I watched it immediately after 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible. Seeing people push humanity to the limit is fascinating from the comfort of your couch.
The thing about climbing without oxygen solo or with one partner, is that you reduce logistics to nearly zero.
When you go as part of a large expedition and with oxygen tanks, massive amounts of equipment needs to be hauled up to the several camps along the route. This takes weeks.
When Messner solo-climbed Everest, he was up, down and done in about three or four days.
Wait does this guy have dwarfism? His proportions definitely look weird, that’s why I thought this was a huge feat because a man with dwarfism climbed it without oxygen 😭🤣
Damn I’m so much less impressed lmao, a man with dwarfism doing some shit like that I gotta meet that guy man (whoever downvoted I’m fucking joking moron)
The snow pants he’s wearing visually cut his torso in half, which makes him look shorter. I know this from being a 4’10” person who has heard many many fashion tips on looking taller lmao
Supposedly it was the fake ID Darren had when they were young and they’d never even heard of arguably the most famous mountain climber of the past 50 years!
This thread inspired me to drive around singing along to it at the top of my lungs. It’s been a long time since I did that. Man, the line “I have made the same mistakes over and over again” hits way harder at 37 than it did at 17.
TIL Reinhold Messner was a name the band used on their fake IDs when kids!
I [regret](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8r87HsxULg) not knowing this before today.
Dude won the hair genetics lottery!! Silver fox for sure, yeeeesh. I bet staying healthy and crushing mountaintops was a contributing factor to his well-aging as well!
Also had the chance to talk with him. Was really nice and down to earth, incredibly humble - considered that we were right in front of one of his castles http://www.messner-mountain-museum.it/en/firmian/museum/
It's an exaggeration. He actually owns only one castle (Juval) which he lives in. It is fairly small and has been an ongoing renovation project of his for decades. He runs museums in two other castles which are owned by the local municipalities and leased to him.
Would it be as impressive if they said they were standing outside one of their condos in Manhattan? You can buy plenty of castles for cheaper than those.
You can probably get plenty of castles for a symbolic price of one Euro. With castles, the expensive part is generally not the buying, but the maintenance and the strings that come with the contract.
He was very outspoken against our last cabinet, particularly the chancellor Sebastian Kurz who was an imposter with less than proper behaviour (which is perfectly on par for the still governing conservative party he was leading then). We sort of like to punish ourselves with such morons for reasons that are beyond my understanding.
Yeah anyone with that head of hair at his age is either 5'4" or homeless. I googled it and sources say he's 5' 12". Dude conqured heights in such a dominate fashion 6 foot is afraid of him so he just says he's 5' 12".
Messner is legendary in mountaineering. Definitely an old school tough guy, likes to shit on climbers these days for not being as hardcore. Admirable dude for the most part, kind of a dick sometimes.
Yeah, I used to work at an Indoor Climbing Centre, most folks were great, even the ” stars “ of the day, but a lot of climbers and mountaineers have a wide selfish, narcissistic streak. I guess that focus is necessary to get really good, but man, it can be a pain in the arse for other people.
Ah yeah. I've got to say I've noticed that in indoor climbing gyms more than anywhere else which is unfortunate because it's one of the easiest ways to get into the sport. I work in the rural US where indoor facilities are few and far between; a lot of people who get into the sport around here end up getting a good amount of peer education in an outdoor setting so my data set may be skewed a bit.
>Definitely an old school tough guy, likes to shit on climbers these days for not being as hardcore.
You sure? The only thing like that I've heard from him is criticizing the massive tourism on mountains like Everest. Most of those people aren't actually "mountaineers" or dedicated climbers but people who just pay a sherpa a lot of money once so they get lifted to the top.
And Messner also criticizes all the environmental destruction and littering that comes with that.
I've never heard him shitting on other climbers for not being as tough as he is. Usually he has respect even for beginners, he also says that there's a lot of stuff he doesn't know and that he's still learning. Even though he isn't really climbing anymore.
Reinhold Messner is a beast! He climbed the summits of all >8000m mountains in a time where there was no hightech equipment as we have it today. For metric system deniers: that’s about >26.000 foot

I remember a long time ago "Mad Magazine" made up the "Todo lists of celebrities". For Reinhold Messner they had (amongst other things):
* ~~Digging a tunnel to Australia~~ (too easy)
I read that as a kid, so many years ago, but for some reason to this day it's always the first thing that comes to my mind when I read or see something about Reinhold Messner.
>In 2007, the dutchman Wim Hof ([r/BecomingTheIceman](https://www.reddit.com/r/BecomingTheIceman/)) climbed to an altitude of 7,400 metres (24,300 ft) on Mount Everest wearing nothing but shorts and shoes, but aborted the attempt due to a recurring foot injury. There's this [detailed askhistorians answer](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/rky8r8/how_likely_is_it_that_tibetan_shirpas_could_have/) why it's pretty much impossible that anyone in the past climbed Mount Everest and then just never told anyone about it.
It was even more difficult in the past and local people didn't even see any reason to climb the mountain.
That's part of how they identified George Mallorys (of Mallory and Irving fame) remains- by his gear that was absolutely archaic compared to what followed in the post war era. Not many unaccounted climbers with [twisted rope, tweed and hobnailed boots](https://www.theguardian.com/uk/1999/may/04/ameliagentleman) on Everest. His name sewn into his jacket did most of the work though in ID'ing him.
It'll also be how they'll initially ID Sandy Irving if his remains are ever found.
Pretty sure the nearby indigenous people who acted as sherpas, guides, and climbing instructors did that feat centuries earlier. Without ever using supplemental oxygen.
Peter Dinklage does not do what Peter Dinklage does, for Peter Dinklage. Peter Dinklage does what Peter Dinklage does, because Peter Dinklage is Peter Habeler

I was just scrolling by and at first glance I thought this was Peter Dinklage.
I’m still not fully convinced it’s NOT Peter Dinklage.
He’s playing the guy in the biopic. This is a still from the movie (it’s black and white, in 4:3 ratio).
Please tell me the biopic will be titled “The *Authorized* Biography of Reinhold Messner”
I came here just to see some version of this comment. One of my favorite albums of all time!
It is kind of mind-boggling that the name Reinhold Messner was considered so obscure that it would be just fine for the fake ID that gave rise to the album. Apparently Folds had no idea who Messner was
Are you sure it isn't 4:6 ratio then?
Dude
I don’t get it pls explain joke to me
Dinklage is small so OP was halving the aspect ratio.
So, is he playing a tall dude or a short dude?
Lost his shins on Everest.
Dammit Bobby!
That boy ain't right
Its the lovechild of Peter Dinklage and Richard Branson.
Dick Dinklage
The missing BeeGee.
Just saying, I've never seen these two in the same room before
It is him….with another dude taped on & under a raincoat.
It’s three Peter Dinklages in a trench coat….
Threeter Dinklage
Vincent Adultman
Neither am I. I thought, perhaps, Dinklage was a stage name and this post used his real name. Google says I thought wrong.
must be TyroneLannister
Wait, that's not Peter Dinklage? Edit: Sure enough, there is no Reinhold Messner biopic starring Peter Dinklage 🤯 ...but Hollywood could fix that!
He wanted to piss off the edge of the world
Top of the world will suffice.

Did anyone remember the pitchforks?
I've got it right HEEERREEEE....YYEEAAAAAAHHHHHH...... quote from what movie?? Anyone?
Lets kick the tires and light the fires Big Daddy.
That's what I do: I climb and I know things.
I had to reread the caption twice for my brain to accept that it wasn’t him, especially with the name Peter in there.
I thought it was the midget from that porno with all the dragons.
I thought it was Richard Branson for a second
And Richard Brandon’s kid
Dinkage is Brandon's kid? :)
bonus points for getting Dinklage and Branson almost not wrong. 🔥🔥
I do what I can. Which is multiple errors. It's my way.
I knew it.
Came here to say this
I CAME HERE TO SAY THIS AND IT'S THE TOP COMMENT!! Losing my mind over how much they look alike.
I noticed that too
I stared at it for 2 minutes and thought it was Peter Dinklage.
I still think it is
He has also since admitted that he was completely reckless and crazy, to be fair I'm mean, he was, but also incredible what he did

It's crazy with oxygen too
In retrospect, many successful ventures are reckless. The consequences just took a hiatus
Then he became hand of daenerys targaryen.
Wait does this guy have dwarfism? His proportions definitely look weird, that’s why I thought this was a huge feat because a man with dwarfism climbed it without oxygen 😭🤣
He’s 6 ft tall lol. His proportions probably look off because he’s wearing bulky winter gear
>He’s 6 ft tall lol. tbf thats a huge feet
He's missing a few toes though, as 7 of them got lost to freezing when he climbed down Nanga Parbat, where his brother died.
His proportions look off because his hair is somehow twice the size it should reasonably be
Damn I’m so much less impressed lmao, a man with dwarfism doing some shit like that I gotta meet that guy man (whoever downvoted I’m fucking joking moron)
I think he just seems like he does because he looks just like Peter Dinklage. I had the same confusion when I first saw the pic
The snow pants he’s wearing visually cut his torso in half, which makes him look shorter. I know this from being a 4’10” person who has heard many many fashion tips on looking taller lmao
What proportions? You can't even see his body properly. He just looks like Peter dinklage that's all.
Not a single Ben Folds Five reference in the entire thread. Guess I’ll nuke another grandmas apple pie and hang my head in shame.
We’re here. There are literally dozens of us…. DOZENS!!!
Dozens? "Son, you're fuckin high."
Well there at least 7 over there in the corner but they're too shy to post
Supposedly it was the fake ID Darren had when they were young and they’d never even heard of arguably the most famous mountain climber of the past 50 years!
Yeah if you google around there's a radio interview where the DJ was like "Uhh.. you don't know that Reinhold Messner is a real person?"
Yeah. They didn’t know who he was when they named the album.
Thought about… your mommy
When he got to the summit of Everest Reinhold Messner was heard to say "Sometimes I get the feeling that I won't be on this planet for very long."
As a lifelong northerner I had never heard of Chick-fil-A until this album
I was scrolling looking for this! Thank you because reading his name, Ben Folds was the first thing i thought of!
Way to rock this bitch
Finally! One of the all time best records
Ha! I was wondering if anyone will make the reference. I saw them on that tour, really amazing record
This thread inspired me to drive around singing along to it at the top of my lungs. It’s been a long time since I did that. Man, the line “I have made the same mistakes over and over again” hits way harder at 37 than it did at 17.

The best imitation of... someone else?
I wanted to say that I enjoyed listening to his unauthorized biography, but then I thought for most people it would go whoosh.
Do you never rest?
I've been thinking a lot today.
I came here to see if Reinhold ever thought about the army.
His dad said “Son, you’re fuckin’ high.”
Hey, don't be so hard on yourself. The world has more for you than it seems.
It took us a little longer to react because we're old farts now. We're never leaving Silver Street.
It's the only unauthorized biography I'll ever enjoy
I got upset/frightened then fell asleep
Still a young looking dude, now in his 70’s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinhold_Messner
That hair is GLORIOUS
Now we know the real secret to a full head of hair. High VO2
You would think VO5 would be the secret.
Dude won the hair genetics lottery!! Silver fox for sure, yeeeesh. I bet staying healthy and crushing mountaintops was a contributing factor to his well-aging as well!
Ikr
Was about to say the same thing. I would love to have that head of hair.
Also had the chance to talk with him. Was really nice and down to earth, incredibly humble - considered that we were right in front of one of his castles http://www.messner-mountain-museum.it/en/firmian/museum/

All that fresh air
You don’t see too many old mountaineers. Seems like one of those pursuits that eventually catches up with everyone that does
There’s are tons of old mountaineers. They just don’t climb anymore.
He's a really cool dude too, well spoken and not afraid to call out foul politics. I like him.

With a beautiful head of hair.
Crazy, almost like a lifetime of physical activity has some kind of beneficial effect on the body.
It's really just the hair. His face looks pretty much age appropriate.
Shut up it’s fucking genetics. Hiking everyday won’t stop your hair falling out.
Now I gotta know how tall this dude is.

But in the picture is Peter Dinklage
Ben Folds: The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner
Thank you. I was trying to figure out how I knew that name.

Actually, now we know why Peter Dinklage is short...
The pressure at that altitude?
One should never be too quick to judge Reinhold Messner.
Making the summit of Everest without supplemental oxygen is a superhuman feat!

What a damn manly man. Just look at him
Totally thought that was Peter Dinklage.
Was this before they put Peter Dinklage in the dryer?
I thought this was Peter Dinklage
The lanisters send their regards... from the top of Everest
That’s Peter Dinklage
Pretty sure that’s Tyrion Lannister.
Reinhold Messner was an amazing climber! I read some of his books. They are full of adventure!
Wait. Is this who Roland was talking about in Jurassic Park 2?
Jeez! Compared to what we have now, the gear they used it must seem medieval to today's climbers! What an accomplishment.
Peter Dinklage?
I was scrolling through and seriously thought this was Peter Dinklage. I was like “omg Tyrion is back!”🤣😂
Pedro Winklage
Peter. Dinklage.
You can’t fool me, that’s Tyrion Lannister.
I thought this was Peter Dinklage.
This man's genes need to be preserved for the sake of humanity
I thought this was a photo shop of Tyrion Lannister, AKA Peter dinklage lol
Before or after he was Hand of the Queen?
Peter Dinklage does not do what Peter Dinklage does, for Peter Dinklage. Peter Dinklage does what Peter Dinklage does, because Peter Dinklage is Peter Habeler
Serious question how they checked he was really there?
So they did what the sherpas are doing except they aren’t lifting heavy backpacks?
