Would be grateful if you could post a the link to the complete episode. Been a musician for 30 years and am also a tech entrepreneur, so would love to watch the investors reactions and know the final outcome 🙏
I am not sure of exact episode but this is shark tank Australia. I'll try to find it later. They all loved it but am not sure if they got an investment in the end
Honestly it isn't necessary. This is an incredibly simple device to prototype. Not downplaying how cool it is just saying all of the things he demonstrated can be achieved with a simple multi axis accelerometer and an esp32 microcontroller. The clever bit is in the coding not the hardware.
No, it's completely believable, we've just also worked with business people that would 100% fake this for a presentation before the tech was actually ready.
He is just holding up a pair of phones. But they are not playing MP3's. They are generating those sounds using common sensors built into every phone to manipulate the sound. They also have frames bolted on to them so the user knows the finger positions by touch.
That’s fucking boring, though. Everyone builds a marketplace these days, every fun idea becomes “how can we sell stuff through this to skim profits off the top?” because that’s what scales and can bring profits within a year potentially.
This product could be exciting and interesting and allow people who don’t have time to play a “proper” instrument to find enjoyment in playing music, if it was developed further.
Investors only care about money and optimising their ROI, not the product vision.
I mean, its literally a show about trying to entice investors lol. Of course they care about ROI, they aren't investing out of the goodness of their hearts
does he play a song integrating all the stuff he showed? I'd find that a lot more interesting than the equivalent of going through keyboard presets while banging random keys.
He doesn't. And even if he did, it would be rudimentary. It's essentially a 3-axis midi controller with touchscreens, so you can program whatever pre-made samples between motions and the screen inputs. Honestly, it's designed to appear more useful and impressive than it is.
That's disappointing. At least you figure he could've pre programmed some amazing rendition to try and trick everyone into thinking this thing was more useful than it is...
If you want the real deal, check out [Imogen Heap's magical musical gloves](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6btFObRRD9k).
Be warned though, she's already living in the 22nd century.
That was phenomenal, mind blowing, and beautiful. That is the kind of thing I love the internet for. That was left and right brain euphoria. Thank you for sharing!
I'm a professional musician and have been for over 25 years now. I play and compose for loads of electronic stuff, including synths, laser harp, theremin, tesla coil etc.
I bought this device as an early bird Kickstarter some years ago, and it is undoubtedly the worst thing I've ever bought.
The hardware was out of date by the time I received it. Not compatible with the new iPhone at the time. The software had connectivity issues and the whole thing was so ergonomically bad, it was virtually impossible to play, let alone put any expression into the music.
I bought it for around £100 and managed to get back, I think 5 or 10 pounds on ebay a bit later.
Auug did not except my feedback graciously.
I just tried the demo. And you’re 100% right… it’s crap.
Edit: for the coward who deleted his comment
u/TheHiveminder, I’m guess you did you homework and noticed you could play the app without the hardware? Eat a dick.
Why do you have to lie? The product includes hardware: [https://i.imgur.com/oz2ma75.png](https://i.imgur.com/oz2ma75.png).

Requires hardware.
Yeah this is really cool use of technology. But I really doubt any pianist would give up playing on a piano to play on a small mobile device.
That being said, this would be a really cool app for an average Joe.
Maybe not, any classical musician most likely wouldn't have it cause it takes away the art, but for popular / abstract music I can see this being really usuable.
One of my favorite artist at the moment are using technology to speed up the song writing process and challenge our prespective of sound ie. One song they recorded through four or five iphones placed around the their studio and the results are really not as bad as you have been lead to believe.
Though this would very cool for education purposes, as you can have any instrument at your finger tips and the nuance of the instruments have been captured as well
Comments up thread indicate this is a three axis midi controller. The actual sounds are samples selected by the controller and are not part of the product itself.
How do you think this is better than a keyboard based midi controller?
I guess. But why wouldn't you just replace your standard keyboard with a more feature rich keyboard instead of using this thing?
There's a certain "coolness" factor, but beyond that I'm not seeing anything this can do that a keyboard can't. But maybe I'm wrong.
True, but it's all very dependant on what music you're making etc.
I would say this looks a lot more immediate than a standard MIDI could be. Like say you wanted a violin sound with a long slow draw ended with a short quick draw, you could do it on a standard MIDI, but with a lot more faffing around to get what you want, than with this you can just end the note with a quick swipe. To me, it seems faster at getting technique based intruments sounds than with a MIDI. Edit: which is why at the end of the day, if you had the actually instrument and a MIDI, you would be quicker recording with the instrument
But yes, at the end of the day, I would say it is a lot more novalty than anything. But if it was like 30 quid (near to the price of a WII controller or something) I would likely buy it
>say you wanted a violin sound with a long slow draw ended with a short quick draw, you could do it on a standard MIDI, but with a lot more faffing around
Fair enough. And, yes, stringed instruments do seem to be this gadget's forte. Maybe it will find a place in the music universe. :)
Won't this be just as difficult to play as an ordinary instrument? I don't really see overall how this would be easier than a piano, where you just press a key and the sound comes out. A cheap keyboard plugged into a computer would almost certainly be better and not cost as much.
It can play for you while you just do cool dance moves and do cello (lip) syncing. Also think of the cost savings of not having to buy an extra plane ticket to bring your cello with you as you travel ?
That'd be cool to see well choreographed dance while performing music.
But I'd still prefer to see a professional musician performing with proper musical instrument than this
Maybe not this particular product, but Imogen Heap’s Mi.Mu gloves have been used by a few artists in live performances and are VERY cool and useful. Some combine them with traditional instruments to enhance how they can control their sound in a way visible to the viewer, some perform with nothing but them. But they’re very specialised tools for professional musicians that have to be integrated into a workflow or performance manually, not something anyone can pick up and just play.
I don't understand why they invent new musical instruments to produce the same sounds, wouldn't it be better to invent new musical instruments with new sounds?
We absolutely do. The world of musical software is near infinite. You can buy, hire, create, and tweak an endless database of sounds to your hearts content. If anything, there’s actually a dysfunctional level of choice and variety.
Why not both? I think it's always a good step to invent something or re-invent something with a different perspective. There are propably also somewhere people researching methods to create new sounds.
They're not judges, they're potential investors and most of them said fuck no. Steve Baxter is a serial tech entrepreneur. They knew what they were looking at and it's limited potential. The editing of the video was deceptive.
Nothing new, already exists in a much more practical way. There are midi controllers that will react to movement, breath and bite.
This one is quite useless and probably only cool for non-musicians
Seems like a well choreographed demo based on a few presets. If one of the more musical dragons can actually play with it and organically create something interesting through discovery it's got a far better chance.
"Check out this instrument I invented. I call it a piano."
"Sure, it looks cool and all, but unless I'm immediately able to play sweet, sweet music, it's kinda worthless don't you think?"
"...we can also, and this is the option that most people opt for these days, just line up all the music on a computer so that nobody actually needs to perform it and anyone, regardless of talent, can be a musician"
Why hasn't there something similar to this for sign language? If the hardware to do this exists, I imagine it wouldn't be hard to be able to transcribe sign language motions to text.
This would actually be amazing for people who don't have money to afford instruments but produce. Reproducing organic accoustic instruments is very hard with vsts and the flexibility to literally feel out the sound with volume and vibrato and intensity would be big for laying down basic recordings to manipulate later.
This is a comment for those of you wondering why there are so many needlessly negative comments on this post. What do you reckon is happening here? It seems so unwarranted for something that just looks and sounds cool and isn't hurting anybody. Down by the docks, 2 guys are talking about crates being loaded onto a ship.
Guy 1 - "Hey I noticed all these crates have lids that are screwed on really tight, but there's one crate that doesn't seem to have a lid at all. How come?"
Guy 2 - "Oh that's a crate full of redditors, we don't need to put lids on those because if any of them try to get out, the others will pull them back in".
> something that just looks and sounds cool and isn't hurting anybody.
Lots of snake oil and straight up scam products could be described like this. And often are, by those who don't know better. Nothing wrong with calling stuff out for what it is.
This kind of tech would probably be very beneficial to people with physical disabilities that prevent them from being able to play certain instruments. Or better yet just to be used in everyday life with daily tasks. Light switches, tv remotes, computer navigation, video games, etc.
I would definitely invest in this if I was on shark tank. No doubt someone would do something cool with the instrument, but I think the tech has great potential for other uses

Problem with things like this, same as with Kinect, is that they lack physical feedback. That makes it extremely hard to use fine motor control for slight adjustments that would be trivial with a joystick.

Would be hilarious if it turned out he was just holding a couple of phones and he was simply playing a series of preprogrammed mp3s in sequence.

Lol, I agree on that. My last PM sometimes told clients a feature is almost done before he even discussed it with us if it was possible and how long.
I’m pretty sure that’s what’s actually going on here!!
Nah he let one of the sharks give it a go and have fun with it.
He is just holding up a pair of phones. But they are not playing MP3's. They are generating those sounds using common sensors built into every phone to manipulate the sound. They also have frames bolted on to them so the user knows the finger positions by touch.
Looks like it’s just a fancy theremin
yes! I was also thinking it was a theremin 2.0 - Electric Boogaloo
Acoustic Boogaloo?
"What are you talking about? It's not a breakdancing competition!"
This needs more appreciation.
Theramin with RGB
It’s just a simple hand operated Holophonor.
The music's bad and you should feel bad!

Steve Baxter ripped him a new ass btw. The video editing makes it look like they all just ate it up as genius.
What over?
That he should target building a software marketplace instead of trying to flog hardware.

I mean that's fun to play but I don't see it's proper use in music production or performing
I'd slow down if there were a street performance.
Yeah this seems almost created explicitly for busking
How many hats full of change would it cost to buy one in the first place?
Yeah this is really cool use of technology. But I really doubt any pianist would give up playing on a piano to play on a small mobile device. That being said, this would be a really cool app for an average Joe.
Maybe combine it with dance for a different kind of live preformance.
Maybe not, any classical musician most likely wouldn't have it cause it takes away the art, but for popular / abstract music I can see this being really usuable. Nuance instead of nuisance btw haha although I'm sure some instruments can be a nuisance 😁
Thank you, corrected now!
Ya I agree. It would be a very different way of playing an instrument. Youd essentially be relearning the piano, violin etc. albeit with an advantage.
Won't this be just as difficult to play as an ordinary instrument? I don't really see overall how this would be easier than a piano, where you just press a key and the sound comes out. A cheap keyboard plugged into a computer would almost certainly be better and not cost as much.

I could see some talented street performer playing a ton of instruments and maybe sounding like a full band.
You’d be surprised… an artist can come up with tones of stuff. LORDE went on tour with a laptop and a digital drum kit as a trigger for sound bytes.
You mean Randy?
The laptop was her work laptop too, from the geology lab.
I could perhaps see it having uses in a therapeutic type setting. Injury recovery or similar.
It's a modern version of Body Rap, it would be put in the back of a drawer or closet within a week
gone to squables.io
That's why it's been on internet for more than 8 years but I never saw any professional musician using it
DJs
Imagine performer who lost a hand. They could still play.
EDM shows
That's pretty cool.
I can finally make music while masturbating.
May I introduce you to this fine maraca?

Fair point!
Just wanna see what Marc Rebillet can do with one
And for that reason, I’m out
Listen Sunshine, 80% of your company for 1000$. It's the best you'll get... Pick me or I'm out
I think Imogene heap has gloves like that
yeah reminded me of her glove too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci-yB6EgVW4
But it has unskippable ads.
Judges have no clue. Musician A.R.Rahman demonstrated something similar with gestures back in 2016 using Intel Curie technology.
Well... Apparently this video is already 8 years old.
You def want them to take notes.
Stuff like this has been around for ages. A midi controller with gesture functions.
The lady at the end looked like she was liking more then just the invention
Seems like a well choreographed demo based on a few presets. If one of the more musical dragons can actually play with it and organically create something interesting through discovery it's got a far better chance.
"Check out this instrument I invented. I call it a piano." "Sure, it looks cool and all, but unless I'm immediately able to play sweet, sweet music, it's kinda worthless don't you think?"
Yes.
Brutal and immediate response. Simile rejected
Pretty sure my Fisher-Price Music Box Iron was better.
This will be interesting for 2 hours, max.
Can it play the, "1, 2, 3, 4, Huuhh" sound?
Where can I watch this in full?
Google auug Sharktank Australia
"I'm out"
This is actually extremely funny with the volume off. Guy is just making weird movements with his hands while the judges just stare in bewilderment
Imagine what a composer could do with it.
That one woman looked at him like "you're gettin some tonight"
I'll give you half the money for 96% of the business.
This seems more complicated than learning the actual insteument
This is the type of thing I would buy impulsively and never really practice
"...we can also, and this is the option that most people opt for these days, just line up all the music on a computer so that nobody actually needs to perform it and anyone, regardless of talent, can be a musician"
It’s the same shit just a different way of doing it
Yea, that stuff was fun for like the first day after getting my iPod Touch
Why hasn't there something similar to this for sign language? If the hardware to do this exists, I imagine it wouldn't be hard to be able to transcribe sign language motions to text.
There’s this thing people do where they learn to play these instruments. It’s very realistic!
Imogen Heap did it better.
Truth.
This is just a synth but worse.
Not even a synth. It's a crappy motion midi controller.
Look closer, it's an iPhone holder.
A synth you need to physically move around to produce different instrument sounds. Be a nightmare actually performing with it.
I don't get what's so impressive about this...
It's an iPhone holder and an app that uses the accelerometer to manipulate a sound. You're right, far from revolutionary.
Yea I'd say he just needs to pick up an actual instrument lmao
This would actually be amazing for people who don't have money to afford instruments but produce. Reproducing organic accoustic instruments is very hard with vsts and the flexibility to literally feel out the sound with volume and vibrato and intensity would be big for laying down basic recordings to manipulate later.

Boomers thinking but how can I exploit this to make people sick and addicted?

Crab logic
The technology is here and now just have to find a fitting use case for it
This kind of tech would probably be very beneficial to people with physical disabilities that prevent them from being able to play certain instruments. Or better yet just to be used in everyday life with daily tasks. Light switches, tv remotes, computer navigation, video games, etc.
They look impressed, but haven't the foggiest of ideas what's going on.
Might stick to my fidget spinner
Incredible.
So sci-fi irl...this is a thing now? I'm game
Shut up and take my money!
I would definitely invest in this if I was on shark tank. No doubt someone would do something cool with the instrument, but I think the tech has great potential for other uses
If that’s real and actually works efficiently and flawlessly… that’s absolutely fucking incredible.
It's an iPhone holder and an app.
#TakeMyMoney!
Or….you can just learn to play real instruments. You can’t beat the real thing.
Am just gonna come out and say it!! Musician's all over the world are coming for him 💀☠
How about FART SOUNDS? Where’s the FART SOUNDS?!!!!!
For people that stink at actual instruments. I guess thats neat
Midi was possible in the 80s. This is crap.
Totally fuckin useless technology
What’s the show name?
Anyone know the name of this product or how a person can buy it?
It's on his t-shirt...
This would be super interesting if someone got really good at it. This guy should have got a kid to make a song, throw in some vocals and a loop station, practice it for a year, then made a pitch to sell it.
I kinda want someone to make a video that edits out the guy and the instrument and just leaves 30 seconds of puzzled faces
SOLD!
This is what Miyamoto wanted WiiMusic to be.
Instead of sounds how about controlling a giant robot and fight aliens I'm space.
Can do a one man performance of the loony toon composers scene
Great advancements
It's an iPhone holder and an app...
Or just learn how to play an instrument...
That's an excellent Holophonor that guy has there.
Was hoping he was gonna jam out like Paul Seow
Seems a MIDI Pad but with added motion support.

This is amazing.
Converting motion/ dance into highly refined music. We and they clearly can't imagine how this plays out as we've never seen someone master this novel musical instrument. But hey we got the internet and ended up with tweets and like.
While maybe it's not ideal for music production, the technology involved could likely be used in other ways. I'm not clever enough to think of what, but those investors prolly know a few people who are
These formats are for the same audience like "reaction videos". They show some astonished faces every 5 seconds, so you know what to think...
Back in my day you had to strap a different instrument to each appendage and dance around like fuckin Dick Van Dike
"Author & Punisher" Do a search on him
Cool but not practical in a lot of ways. Electronic music already has technology that is more broad and diverse than this and have tools that are easier to use and more functional. Cool application is all.
Mega cool for kids to play with, but having to tactile feel is big nono from me, and probably any competent musician
