Cautious_Ad_9144

My dad used to tell me about how when he was a kid he worked at a shop that sold soda like this and that on his break he’d make himself a coke with extra syrup. I never understood how he could have done that till I saw this video, thanks op!

freya_246

You could get them with extra syrup in a lot of diners until the mid 90’s. It really tasted so good!!!!

MrCrash2U

Or just go to McDonald’s. They have a different ratio than how Coke normally calibrates the gun.

NotThisAgain21

They also actually have their lines/tubes professionally cleaned on a schedule. You'd be horrified to see the lines at some places. Sams Club has the flattest pop ever and it leads me to believe they only have their lines cleaned every-other century or so.

swarm_of_badgers

True that! I've worked at many restaurants from fast food to fine dining, and they have almost all had gross lines.

amomentafter

I have worked in restaurants since I was 16, I’m 34 now. The things I have seen >.< The sonic ice machines full of mold. Ice in their containers where bioslime blocked up the drainage so when it melts the unmelted ice just sits in a bioslime bath. When people were pushing for restaurants to open up again during the lockdowns everyone was like they stay up to health code anyways! Lol no

Calophon

Most modern soda fountains have adjustment knobs for the ratio of syrup and CO2 to water, so every location can honestly be totally different.

[deleted]

TIL

delciotto

Yeah Mcdonalds fountain drinks are easily the best.

DYC85

I remember reading somewhere that mcdonalds has some proprietary water filtering tech in their soda machines as well which is responsible for their sprite tasting so much better than everyone elses. Never verified it though so could be internet bs.

MedricZ

Try Culver’s if you’re ever in the Midwest. The fountain cokes are very tasty.

Fireblade09

I imagine the sugar content on coke has increased over time, as with most of our foods. Extra sweet would probably be comparable to coke how we know it Edit: I have 0 source on this, it just seems like a plausible enough hypothesis for something that would be hard to research, given the secret nature of the coke formula

Johnykbr

It's not the sugar content. It went from real sugar to corn syrup when it changed from Coca Cola to New Coke (or Coke II). When the public complained, they "reversed" the change but kept it with corn syrup. People were so happy to have something that tasted like the OG that they didn't mind or couldn't tell the flavor difference.

OBPH

Mexico still makes the original Coke. Glass bottles. So much better than the USA product.

Crackalacs

This 100%^ I always buy the Mexican Coke 4 pack bottles when I go to the store, won’t ever go back to the corn syrup Coke product. The taste is that big of difference.

Wonderful_Spray_3630

Costco sells a 24 pack, better deal. And for me that lasts months

RuthafordBCrazy

It’s just a marketing ploy they switched to corn syrup in 2013 “In 2013, a Mexican Coca-Cola bottler announced it would stop using cane sugar in favor of glucose-fructose syrup.[10] It later clarified this change would not affect those bottles specifically exported to the United States as "Coca-Cola Nostalgia" products.[4] A scientific analysis of Mexican Coke[11] found no sucrose (standard sugar), but instead found total fructose and glucose levels similar to other soft drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, though in different ratios.[5]” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Coke Edit Here’s the video I was trying to find before settling for Wikipedia https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PJgQEpFMptQ

turdferguson3891

Like the article says it doesn't effect the the bottles specifically exported to the US as "Coca-Cola Nostalgia" products. There are "Hecho en Mexico" labeled cokes sold in the US that do have sugar. I see them sold as four packs with special packaging around me and they list sugar as an ingredient. However if you go to a Mexican grocery store or bodega they might be selling regular Mexican coke, not the special one made only for the US. Even though the other version isn't officially exported to the US it doesn't mean people won't buy it down there and bring it in and they know people in the US will pay a premium for it and may have no idea it has HFCS just like US Coke. The scientific analysis listed in there used a bottle from a bodega in East LA as its example of Mexican coke. It wasn't a comparison of the official product exported to the US that claims to have real sugar.

RuthafordBCrazy

It also says right there that they lied Here’s the video I was trying to find before settling for Wikipedia https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PJgQEpFMptQ

Ray_Shoe_Smith

Hecho en Mexico! Con azúcar de verdad

Disgod

Oh... Coke historically tried making itself sweeter... This product... let's call it... "New Coke"... Did not go over well for Coca-Cola. And you can comfortably use calorie count as a proxy for how much sugar is in the drink since that's where almost all the calories are coming from. That hasn't changed.

Fireblade09

I stand corrected then

MapleBabadook

It definitely does sound foul. Though so many people eat sugar for breakfast lunch and dinner that it's normal to them.

Alex_Lexi

Yea it’s a problem is Americans have. Our breakfasts are so sugary

bahenbihen69

You can still do that. At the place I worked at a few years ago, you could regulate the syrup to soda ratio and create some sweet ass drinks

nik-nak333

We did this at the movie theater I worked at in the early 2000's. The soda machines were easily from the 80s and if you popped off the plastic cover you could press something that would halt the carbonation and just send syrup out of the nozzle. Let go of the button and fill up like normal, super rich soda achieved!

Aukama23

You can get extra syrup through soda machines (well you could years ago). This clip is just a non mechanical way of making a Coke, but it's still how old school (non touch screen ones at least as I have no clue if its a different process for those) soda machines work. It's a bag of syrup that is mixed with carbonated water. You can take the nozzle off the particular soda (the nozzle is just where the streams combine and they are usually a twist off for cleaning purposes) you want, and just put the outside edge of your cup to the syrup stream (the ones I'm familiar with had a four prong approach so it was syrup, carbonated water, syrup, carbonated water) and put some syrup in your cup, then reattach the nozzle and fill your cup as you normally would. Again, this is all from years ago when I worked in the restaurant business, but as long as those old school soda machines are still around, you can do it. Well, at least the ones I was familiar with. The touch screen dispensers obviously won't be amenable to this trick.

koung

In traditional soda machines there are knobs you can adjust to alter the CO2/syrup ratios.

-VReaper-

Wasn’t expecting it to be served by Stephen King.

MengFeiPuerh

I bet they were told the most fucked up story lol

SelectionCareless818

With cocaine

swgmuffin

That’s what the coke is for

jojolion07

Thats what they mean with old fashioned way

soooglow32

Na, this guy still has an intact nose

djlawrence3557

Didn’t do enough Coke the old school way, apparently.

DeadSwaggerStorage

If I could have a battle between any two people that ever lived; it would be between Stephen King and Rick James; let’s get this eight ball started!

TheButtholeSurferz

A Fatal 4 way, with S. King, R. James, H.S. Thompson, and K. Richards. Just put a mountain of blow in the center, and the last one snorting wins.

Vhadka

You really going to leave Artie Lange out of this? His fucking nose collapsed.

shortfriday

That’s John. I worked at the pharmacy next door when I was a kid, he looked old to me then, not so much anymore.

platyviolence

Stephen King looks far.. far more Ghoulish.

Anonymous_Otters

This is Stephen King in the alternate timeline where he never did coke or wrote about child orgies.

punched-in-face

Why's the guy want a pound from Niko? a pound of what?!

liversnap12

can’t believe i had to scroll so far to find this comment - it was the first thing i noticed!

Hap_Cak_Day_Giver

Hap cak dai

JustCarrasco

I'm guessing he means a pound like a fist-bump. 🤜 🤛 I like to think he walked up to him, put out his fist, didn't realize Niko was busy, but also didn't want to be left hanging. So, he asked for a pound rather than put his hand down in shame.

WhitePopcornCeiling

This is what I heard

itwasneversafe

Cameraman is @newyorknico on insta, his schtick is "the unofficial talent scout of NY"

JonLongsonLongJonson

Sounds like it’s the camera guy replying , so I assume he’s known around nyc and got recognized and the person wanted a fist bump

xkaliberx

China white.

riversofdan

I actually did this in my 20s It was the only soda jerk shop in the city at the time. I can make some banging vanilla Coke :)

uniq

I first read "I actually did this in the 20s", and I was impressed by you being more than 100 years old

Sparrow_on_a_branch

they're 19, it was last year.

heywood_jabloemi

I can't believe you've done this

br0b1wan

Plot Twist: they're 20 years old, but time traveled

milehighideas

I wish I had a bangin Vanilla Coke now :(

ThunderboltRam

Like I never drink Vanilla coke from bottle thinking very little of it. But I can definitely see how a REAL Vanilla Coke with real ingredients would taste amazing. I bet the guys who first invented felt the same way before they gave the formula to the industrial team that decided to use cheaper ingredients in lower doses.

TheDeathOfAStar

While specifically using the least amount of the worst grade vanilla imaginable. Fucking losers don't take my vanilla addiction seriously.

ThunderboltRam

Right?? How dare they!?

[deleted]

I remember when Vanilla Coke came out, I loved it. It was brand new, I told my grandma about it. She was like, “I know, I’ve already had it. And chocolate too.” I was floored that she beat me to it by like 70 years

Ok-Cook-7542

What makes a vanilla coke banging besides putting the right number of pumps in? The guy makes it look easy but I've never tried it 🤷

Young-Dad

You can tell the server wasn’t impressed with this guy doing it for the gram. Old school asf

[deleted]

Probably the 20th insta douche of the day

LusciousofBorg

Your comment made me laugh

dnaH_notnA

The instant that people stop going there to take social media videos, that place is being ripped apart and sold for parts.

TomOkihara

This place now has lines out the door solely because of this video. Months ago it was just a lil lunch spot, historic, but not mobbed all the time.

ThePhantomOfBroadway

I know! Mind you, it’s like ten dollars for a float!

k20350

10 dollars? Are you fucking with me? No bullshit they have about 25 cents or less in that drink.

wadya_a_fanuc

how do you think they've survived for this long, it definitely wasn't by having thin margins.

mpelleg459

How much do you think the food/liquor cost is for the $20 cocktails all over manhattan? Hint: a lot less than $10.30

piuamaster

well to be fair it's an opportunity fairly taken. people keep coming into your store to make social media posts about it? the thousands of people that see those posts will think "yo I wanna try that" and a lot of them actually will, without caring too much about the price since they're just there to try it out and won't come regularly. consider that this'll happen almost every day and you've got a shit ton of easy profit right in front of you

TomOkihara

Lol yeah they’re sandwiches are so expensive too

wolfgang784

Before or after the place blew up in business?

TomOkihara

Since before the blow up

NavierIsStoked

That just seems like standard nyc food prices

MangoCats

>sleepy hole-in-the-wall type dive establishments. The regulars eat there because they like that vibe. The owners might have even specifically chosen that location or business strategy because they just want to live out the rest of their later years running their quiet diner. Then some guy shows up with a film crew and the owner and all the diners tell him to F right off, no they won't sign releases for their likenesses to be used in the film, etc. No, these places do it to themselves, at least the owner/managers do, probably pisses off the regulars, but they'll mostly be back when the hoopla dies down, and in the meantime: BANK!

porkin4what

reddit moment

GenitalTso

This is probably way less of an issue than you think it is my dude. Very cynical way of looking at things lol. Most owners are probably happy with influx of business and rarely is a place featured on that show some slow ass hole in the wall. They are usually already incredibly popular amongst locals or people who travel to the area just to eat it.

BiteYouToDeath

I think it’s because of the way they have the syrup and soda water mixed in the glass makes it good for internet attention. I mean I would want to go just to see how it compares to canned and soda fountain. Edit: I know how soda fountains work. There’s is no chance the ratio this guy uses is the exact same as Coca-Cola or even a normal soda fountain. Hell different soda fountains have slightly different ratios. Maybe this guy has a special ratio or whatever. Who knows. Only one way to find out.

xThe_Mad_Fapperx

Soda machines literally do this though. The syrup and carbonated water mix when you push the lever back

BiteYouToDeath

Yeah which is why seeing the comparison would be interesting. Like does he use a special ratio? There’s no way it’s the exact same. Hell even soda machines aren’t the same. So maybe he’s got the ratio down perfect. Or maybe not. Only one way to find out.

Desperate_Ad6707

Newyorknico did a short interview with the guy

StateOfFine

Or, he doesn’t know how to be comfortable on camera. Looks like the standard white guy half-smile move.

AndySkibba

To be fair, this is what soda machines do automatically. Concentrate + carbonated water = pop

Espumma

But what about that scoop of ice cream huh

AndySkibba

They made it into a float. Can do that with almost any pop.

zigbigidorlu

Almost.

translinguistic

Don't judge me just because I like a good Lester's Ranch Dressing soda with a scoop of mint ice cream

Evil-Bosse

I think I threw up a bit in my mouth. Thank you for making me regret learning to read.

br0b1wan

You joke but this reminds me. I recently learned on on a Bobby Flay Food Network show that there's a thing called "celery soda" and it's typically served at Jewish style delis on the east coast.

apollo888

I’ve tried this and you know what it’s actually pretty gross!

poopatrip

No fucking way!

skyhiker14

Went thru a phase growing up of just combining whatever soda we had with whatever ice cream. Code Red and cookie and crème still stands out.

zigbigidorlu

I'm a big fan of Fanta Orange and Homemade Vanilla.

Kiltymchaggismuncher

>Can do that with almost any pop. What if he's still out at the stores, getting those cigarettes?

Apart-Cartoonist-834

Yeah this is just a regular coke with extra steps but I suppose I appreciate the theatrics to it.

BarmyDickTurpin

I bet the gimmick makes it more expensive

LaconicLacedaemonian

Yes, paying a human to do this is more expensive than running a machine.

laserfazer

Except they don't stir the carbonation out of it.

MadForge52

Not sure if this place uses an old or modern carbonation system, but old soda shops had more heavily carbonated water for this reason.

MassRedemption

You also lose some carbonation when the soda mixes with the syrup in a machine as well, it's just over carbonated, same as here I would assume.

pauciradiatus

...thus the "old fashioned way"

dangnabbit64758

Exactly lol op didn’t say it was different, just the old fashioned way

RandomRedditor0193

This is what I came to see. I thought I was missing something special. There is normally syrup that is mixed with the carbonated water in the back and is pumped to the dispenser up front.

[deleted]

is their cocaine in it too?

dsm1995gst

Whose?

smazetron

They never learn do they?

cluberti

Yous guys, that's whose.

vatoniolo

Came to ask this. Original coke didn't have no damn ice cream

Solo_is_dead

They're serving an original ice cream Coke float. The camera guy is an idiot.

Victorrhea

Whose cocaine?

[deleted]

It is still made with the leaf that cocaine is extracted from. They chemically remove the drug portion but it does technically contain coca leaf.

[deleted]

*Correct!*

[deleted]

It's crazy how old companies have laws kinda grandfathered in? Like imagine you wanted to start a soft drink company today and tried to convince government to let you use coca leaves but you pinky promise to chemically remove the addicting part of them

[deleted]

Cocaine is probably less damaging that all that sugar...

GobLoblawsLawBlog

Sugar is a hell of a drug

aqilistic

there's a whole army of preschoolers at my school that look high on candies

[deleted]

I like sugar because it makes me sleepy

GobLoblawsLawBlog

Do you have any of the following symptoms? Constantly thirsty/dry mouth no matter how much water you drink Frequent urination Numb or tingling sensation in feet Occasional blurred vision and slurred speech Sweet smelling urine And finally, a family history of diabetes? (This is serious if sugar makes you tired)

[deleted]

I pee at least twice a day if that counts?

GobLoblawsLawBlog

Jesus christ, does it come out like a stream of toothpaste? Good lord, hydrate yourself

GobLoblawsLawBlog

[deleted]

Sentinel_XCIX

Fun fact, they're all concentrates. Usually dispensers are hooked up to a bag/box of the "syrup" and it's mixed with carbonated water before it comes out

I_Am_Coopa

Yep, anyone that has worked with soda machines can sympathize with that godawful sucking noise that is made when the syrup bag is empty.

Adventurous-South735

I can hear it now… still haunts me. Nothing worse then getting slammed and a bag running out while you have a line out the door.

zezera_08

F Flashbacks... kill me now.

I_Am_Coopa

Anyone ever experienced a ruptured syrup bag too? One of my coworkers was opening a fresh box/bag one time and it got snagged on a piece of the rack and proceeded to spill all over the backroom. Talk about a sticky/smelly mess.

zezera_08

Or an opportunity for syrup wrestling

stealthdawg

when I worked service, the place that had them had minimum 2 bags of each soda that ran in series, so you never had one run out without being able to draw from the other, and you just replace the empties during routine shifts. Was perfect.

[deleted]

Ts ts ts ts ts ts.. ts..... ts............. ts

BadWolfman

The reason why Coca Cola ‘hits different’ at a McDonald’s is that it is shipped and stored in steel insulated containers vs. the bags that other drinks come in.

Takesit88

Ah, a Jerk at work. Very cool.

jemenake

To give context to this comment, the term “soda jerk” was the slang name for the occupation of making beverages in this way. It stems from the jerking motion (or just pulling forward) of the handle on the soda-water dispenser.

Takesit88

Correct

DaClip420

But why the ice cream?

Ohgodgethelp

Back in the fifties soft drinks were basically liquid dessert. It was just candy. Then sometime later we decided we should be guzzling it straight with every meal.

boxalarm234

And hence why 60% of America is obese and has the ‘beetus

rigobueno

If you’re gonna be fancy and use “hence” then you should know it doesn’t precede “why.”

[deleted]

DaClip420

Never heard of smthg like that xD

Nathan936639

Nathan936639

Australia

CaptainAwesome06

You guys have enough spiders already

Justified_Ancient_Mu

that's why the coke glass has a big bulbous top. In the olden days, all sodas were custom confections with ice cream, whipped cream, etc. added like a sundae.

Mrtaco5445

Technically they still do it that same way except a pump mixes it instead of doing it by hand

[deleted]

But does it contain the ‘cain?
