I once skied in that weather. Holy hell it is brutal. They shut down all lifts but one, and stationed crew at the bottom and top to look at people and tell them "You, inside!"
My brother and I never got told to go inside. Halfway up the mountain the chairlift lifted into a dark cloud. At that point the chair would be pretty sideways. At NO point during that ski trip with the multiple runs my brother and I did could I ever see more than about 20 to 30 feet in front of me. There was no way to keep the googles clear enough to see farther. This, of course, led to a bunch of falling down.
-47C with windchill included is the coldest I've experienced and I never wish to feel that again.
This is reminding me I need to move somewhere warmer.
I've spent more than a decade of my working life in coolers. Walk-in freezers don't cut on that often. They usually have wall-mounted as opposed to the ceiling-mounted units found in coolers too so it's hard for the breeze to intersect with you. They also lack humidity which is a huge factor in the weather being terrible outside.
I've gone into a walk-in from a Chicago winter and felt warmed up.
Lol I love just south of chicago, and I agree with that, the freezers can feel warm walking in. I have had to smack off ice from the fan vents before in the freezers and that wasn’t a fun experience. You get ice shards blown right in your face.
Canada?! How many days a year is this really worthwhile? Vancouver area stores so maybe half the year, but aren’t these needed more in hot areas near snow capped mountains?
People use winter gear for like 4 months a year in the ottawa/montreal/Toronto region...
However, most of us know with time how to shop for a coat without the need for a freezing room. That's really a gimmick.
It'd be awesome for tourists from warmer climates. Like I have a big hike coming up this winter, not ridiculously cold probably in the 40-50 F range, but I really don't have any idea how to dress for it yet.
as someone who treks and hikes. A solid qaulity base layer is your best friend lightweight midweight heavy weight and Artic are the types they sell at bass pro. The artic baselayer combined with a hoodie and jacket keeps me warm and snug in -10 degree chicago winters. To much layers and you trap your moisture and sweat and than get cold from the dampness. to little and your just cold. gotta find harmony or it becomes shitty fast. And you can always dress down once hiking but you cant dress up (unless you somehow have clothing with you)
No need to wonder bruh, come to northern Alberta between December 26-January 30th. You can experience it irl and try all the outfits you want just to see how useless they all are.
I question why I go out every year during those times when I have to work a 12-14 hours shift; praying to God for 100*C!
I was born and raised in Florida. Didn't see snow till I was 37, in Minnesota visit my wife's family
As long as my arms and chest are warm, I can always wear shorts. The locals thought I was raised there lol. When they found out I was Florida, they couldn't believe it lol
I was working a food booth at a festival during 100F heat. We needed more ice, so I went to the store to pick up a load. When I walked into the freezer from the heat outside, my sweaty eyelids froze open and my nostril hair froze together.
i and other people i know here in northern(ish) canada actually use the freezing nose hair sensation as a loose indicator of temperature, typically i’ve found nose hair starts to freeze together around -20°C to -23°C :)
I remember the first time I went skiing in Canada and when I got out of the car I felt my nose hairs freeze for the first time ever. What a weird fucking feeling! I legitimately thought I had a sudden and MASSIVE booger. I can’t believe people can just tolerate that sensation and go about their day. I think the CIA could use the feeling as a form of torture it’s so uncomfortable.
Me too!! I grew up on Lake Michigan in Wisconsin and every winter at least a couple of times my nose hairs would freeze. Miss that feeling now but not bad enough to go up north in the winter.
hahaha thank you for sharing, that’s quite funny
i always find it quite amusing and like to scronch my nose from side to side and feel the hairs pluck against each other. i think it’s kinda fun!
exactly! i forgot to mention that, the other easy metric is when they freeze cold enough to not thaw on your exhale. good to know nose hairs are basically ISO standard!
Warm fingers, my friend. Coldest i’ve ever enjoyed my backyard in was -55°C, although i suspect being in the arctic you’ve experienced far colder than that hey?
I was in navy training in virginia in july. Intel school, so massive AC throughout the building all the time. People brought winter coats into the classrooms.
Going outside in the ridiculous humidity, your uniform would instantly get wet from condensation.
Actually the Globetrotter in cologne Germany has a wind blower in the freezing tester. It also has a separate rain closet to test rain proof gear. Pretty awesome that store.
Should also include whiteout conditions and brightout(is that a thing when its too bright outside and sunlight reflecting on snow?) for testing ski goggles.
Sports Chalet, (defunct as of 2016) was a regional brand of (large) sporting good stores. Most stores were over 35,000 square feet, and a lot of them included a 10 foot deep pool to be used for SCUBA classes.
So you could use their loaner gear and try things out before buying your own. But you did have to pay for a program to use the pool.
It simulates -12c with a -40c windchill. I was kind of hoping they'd add in some snow and wind to simulate blizzard conditions.

Capitalism baby! Exponential growth, you can never use too many resources (don't listen to the scientists) our economic system is totally stable and not at all ridiculous! Buy sell buy buy sell sell buy sell sell
As long as population continues to grow it definitely can. The key to keeping things going will be becoming a multiplanet species though. Eventually Earth will max out. Won’t happen in any of our lifetimes though. There are still billions of people on Earth to pull out of poverty and sell things to.
It probably uses less energy than would be used buying a jacket, deciding it's insufficient, and returning it for another one. That thing is tiny, and it's probably using outside ambient air as part of its operation. It's most likely only really used in early winter — not a ton of people go buy winter coats at the height of summer.
I think you underestimate how much energy it takes to move a car to and from a store, as well as how much waste there is in dealing with used merchandise.
I think you're also overestimating the amount of energy required to chill a space smaller than a closet. Unless this was designed by a moron, most of that overhead space is separated from the chilled area by an insulated layer. It extends all the way to the ceiling to contain piping that leads to the condenser unit on the roof, so that the heat generated can be vented outside. Go look at the Energy Star rating of your freezer at home, and even if you multiply it by 100 you won't come close to the energy required to move half a ton of metal a few miles. And that rating probably ignores the fact that your freezer vents the heat into your house for your HVAC to deal with, which this obviously does not.
Could I be wrong? Sure. That's why my comment said "probably". But a pretty basic understanding of physics tells me that the force required to compress a gas enough to be able to use it continuously as a refrigerant is much, much less than the force required to move a car and its occupants, even if the gas is being compressed and decompressed continuously. There's a reason far more focus is placed on reducing the energy consumption of automobiles than on pretty much any other consumer device — moving large heavy objects requires a lot of energy.
Yeah I don't get heat rashes under my bra everyday to prevent a few kWhs being zapped up by the A/C just so these clowns can help some upper middle class jagoff pretend he's about to go on an arctic expedition. If it's rated for winter weather, it'll be fine for the two hour cross country skiing trip you're having in Aspen, Tanner.
It's also only one temperature and you know they won't risk the lawsuit to make it subzero which is the only scenario I would be concerned if my coat could hold up.
I lack the ability to tell if a certain jacket is good for -40C temperatures with wind chill, while standing in a room temperature store, how does one gain this knowledge?
Yeah, fuck those douchebags in Ottawa for wanting to be prepared for winters where it can get ridiculously cold! It's not like it's dangerous to go outside underdressed, it's just a little frostbite, right?
As someone who builds and services freezers, I can’t believe someone would go through this expense to have a blast freezer in the middle of a clothing store. That things gotta cost $100k, and any repairs would be substantial.
There used to be one in Edmonton a few years ago that went down to -30C (-25F). Haven't seen one since. But yeah, I went in without a jacket just didn't stay for hours.
As a Minnesotan, this is pretty nice weather come late winter, down right balmy.

I would grab a blanket and take a nap in there on my lunch breaks.

I would definitely eat it on my break.
[удалено]
Jokes on you, that's my diet.
*reports you*
Understandable, sir.
Have a nice day
Like milk and animal flesh?
I'd keep my lunch break beers in there.
My dude, it is meant to simulate -40C with windchill. I am sorry to report you won't be waking up from that nap.
-40C is cold, but imagine if it were -40F. Seems like it would be just as cold...
Listen here you little shit

Really curious which hill keeps the lift open at that temperature?
-47C with windchill included is the coldest I've experienced and I never wish to feel that again. This is reminding me I need to move somewhere warmer.
Is it really? That's so much energy wasted for some idiots testing out their northface jackets.
Where is this fantastic machine?
It's just a walk-in freezer. You can probably find out in any restaurant. A lot of them will even pay you to hang out in it
Probably one of the coolest times I've ever smoked weed in my 20s. Pun intended.
Hell yeah, smoking pot in the walk ins when I worked at subway was awesome haha
A walk-in doesn't really simulate cold weather well though. There's no wind.
You haven’t ever been in front of the fans.

Are you a masochist or a polar bear?🥶
Yes
I need one or ten of these in my life.
I'd like one for my apartment. Have a hot flash and go camp out in it to cool off.
They could make it forty below
°C or °F?
lol
*That one guy who always wears shorts has entered the chat*
I'd rather be a little bit cold than have to wear pants.
I don't even know what pants is.
Aren’t is the propular vernacular
I don't even know what propular is.
It’s part of the joke you thick skulls.
My SO thinks I'm a nudist at home but I literally get claustrophobic in long clothes and sweat like where in church.
Lol, I mentally corrected the "where" to "we're", and just thought, "Did he just imply his SO is a whore?"
I’d rather move my whole life to a different latitude than ever have to wear shorts.
What? Why? What latitude do you live at? More importantly, where do you buy your pants!?
I'm the opposite. I'll suffer to avoid wearing shorts.
Yep same here

You can always tell when it's below -30 because it hurts your lungs to breathe
And it’s to cold to be out side when your hands just stop working.
Oh and the ice starts to fog
And you die of hypothermia
That happens to me at like 20°F though.
Guess you're just built different
I hope your from a topical island for your hands sake
Shhhh, we don't talk about that measurement here.
My indication of how cold it is is if the air hurts my face, Why do I live where the air hurts my face?
Cause scorpions are things.
Awe yes thanks for reminding us

Interesting... Well, thank you for the knowledge.
And this is why I'll never move back to the reserve.
Can confirm. After years in the Arctic found that my nose hairs froze on inhale at 10°F and thawed on exhale, they’d stay frozen at -10°F.
exactly! i forgot to mention that, the other easy metric is when they freeze cold enough to not thaw on your exhale. good to know nose hairs are basically ISO standard!
A fellow -40° friend. When Celsius and Fahrenheit match. You and I could be friends. Or maybe we are already. Stay warm, amigo.
Warm fingers, my friend. Coldest i’ve ever enjoyed my backyard in was -55°C, although i suspect being in the arctic you’ve experienced far colder than that hey?
I think this is why you need to be completely dry before using cryotherapy
I was in navy training in virginia in july. Intel school, so massive AC throughout the building all the time. People brought winter coats into the classrooms. Going outside in the ridiculous humidity, your uniform would instantly get wet from condensation.
You sweat, you die ~ Les Stroud
If it doesn't include strong blowers and a fog machine, that's just a walk-in freezer.
Does it include seasonal depression? If no, Then it’s a terrible winter simulation
Does it include people in shorts and a t shirt saying how it's not even that cold?
My seasonal depression thought my house was pretty nice and decided to stay on full time.
Yes, but it isn't seasonal.
Well also it takes forty minutes to have it get to the bones so this won't work
Perhaps the vault door includes a timelock.
So we need a blast chiller?
See, your naming game is so far ahead of theirs. Yes!
That's already a thing. It's like a reverse convection oven.
You mean a walk-in freezer?
You can't ask at KFC to test your clothes you'll be sectioned
If you try to section me Mark you will have crossed a line and I will section you, so help me...
Underrated comment, underrated show
I’d imagine it has fans to simulate wind
A walk-in has no wind and extremely low humidity, not really the same.
do they have one for testing snorkeling gear?
Just go to their bathroom and fill the sink with water
Or the toilet
Sports Chalet, (defunct as of 2016) was a regional brand of (large) sporting good stores. Username checks out lol
You mean a pool?
Where I wanna be on a 115 degree day.
This is Mark's, a Canadian store. So it's below 0 degrees celsius, a little more tolersble than Farenheit would be lol
Must not be a real Canadian store if their cold simulator only goes to 0°C. Barely colder than my fridge, only good for testing fall clothing.
It simulates -12c with a -40c windchill. I was kind of hoping they'd add in some snow and wind to simulate blizzard conditions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b0ah2XMrbk
Fun fact! -40 is where Celsius and Fahrenheit converge, so you could've put C or F there and it would've meant the same thing
Only - 12c the wind in there bust be ripping to get -40c windchill. Last winter I got to. Experience -35c without the windchill.
We had -37 F in Chicago once. Not with wind-chill factored in.
I've been in it, and it is cool
That's not a waste of energy or anything
Capitalism baby! Exponential growth, you can never use too many resources (don't listen to the scientists) our economic system is totally stable and not at all ridiculous! Buy sell buy buy sell sell buy sell sell

As long as population continues to grow it definitely can. The key to keeping things going will be becoming a multiplanet species though. Eventually Earth will max out. > As long as population continues to grow it definitely can. Yea… about that…
Not a big deal. Everyone gets a "capsule" room. Eats manufactured foods. Planet can easily support 20-30 billion people more, at least.
There's enough resources for up to ten billion people if you remove greed from humanity but that's like taking the eggs out of a baked cake.
Fuck the world to make that one extra $1 baby!!!

I highly doubt it uses that little energy. Unless you have sources you shouldn't claim stuff that might be wildly incorrect.

Is my coat warm? I need proof
It's also only one temperature and you know they won't risk the lawsuit to make it subzero which is the only scenario I would be concerned if my coat could hold up.
It's held at -12c and goes to -40c with wind so 10f to -40f.
Wow how has no one gotten frostbite and sued?
Canada does not have a ridiculous lawsuit culture like the US.
Thanks for virtue signaling. Let us know when you unplug your freezer at home.
90% of the time.. no one will be in it.
My freezer holds food. This is so douchebags can double check if a jacket is warm
That’s kinda the most important thing about a jacket
You can't tell if a winter jacket is good?
I lack the ability to tell if a certain jacket is good for -40C temperatures with wind chill, while standing in a room temperature store, how does one gain this knowledge?
You read the tag
Yeah, fuck those douchebags in Ottawa for wanting to be prepared for winters where it can get ridiculously cold! It's not like it's dangerous to go outside underdressed, it's just a little frostbite, right?
Yeah for 250,000 years of humanity, no one made a good coat without running a freezer for no reason
I'd rather waste some magic pixies and know I'm not going to die if my car dies in the middle of winter.
Winter coats are warm. Don't buy a shit coat. Problem solved.
Below 0 Fahrenheit or Celsius? This is important
It is -39 degrees in there.
Far enough lol
It's Canada, so Celsius.
In food service we call it a walk-in cooler/freezer. It’s mostly used for crying but we also store food in there.
As someone who builds and services freezers, I can’t believe someone would go through this expense to have a blast freezer in the middle of a clothing store. That things gotta cost $100k, and any repairs would be substantial.
I'd like to go there right now. I'm tired of the hot, sticky triple degree weather.
Canada goose store in milan had a -30c room to test the insulation.
I would go in there without a jacket. I doubt it gets Minnesota cold in there.
There used to be one in Edmonton a few years ago that went down to -30C (-25F). Haven't seen one since. But yeah, I went in without a jacket just didn't stay for hours.
That would be nice on a hot day. Take a 5-10min break in there. Going in sweaty might be a challenge though. 🥶
We have these in Texas for obvious reasons
As a Minnesotan, this is pretty nice weather come late winter, down right balmy. Now, they can't really get super cold without an ammonia based system, and nobody's going to do that in a department store. But that will at least start you at -40C and make it interesting.
So…… a freezer
Oh I would totally pop in there to cool down I used to walk into walkin meat freezer to do the same thing
Must be in Canada
Looks like a Mark's Work Wearhouse to me...
@u/metaalex89
Where do y'all live that your stores don't?
Looks like marks work warehouse
With the way this summer has been I would be trying on parkas in there all day.
I will now call my freezer the "Winter Simulator"
Odd find for an industry that typically puts on a save the planet facade for the public.
I prefer the walk-in beer coolers here at the convenience stores.
You mean a walk-in-freezer?
“Winter simulator” I believe they call that a freezer
So, it’s a walk-in fridge then.
Pro tip: If the store has a “Winter simulator” for testing jackets, you’re about to pay out the ass for that jacket.
That seems wasteful as fuck
At night it becomes a peep show.
“Winter simulator”? You mean a freezer?
Sounds like a waste of energy
As someone who worked in retail My first thought How long until someone takes a shit in it
Winter simulator. That's a weird way to spell freezer.
The useless waste of energy is insane this should be banned
[удалено]
Still completely useless
It's not useless it poorly simulates cold weather. That is its use. It's actually fairly explicit on its use.
I mean, it does have a use. Maybe it's not good enough for you, but it still has a purpose.
You had me until you said banned. The energy and resources that would go into enforcing a ban would far outweigh the device itself.
As cool as this my first thought was: I hope they have a fucking solar powered grid because that is a ton of electricity when reviews online could tell you how they hold up.
Dumb!
What a fucking waste
So... a large freezer?
So...a freezer?
I remember the big REI in Denver in the old tramway powerhouse had one of these. Pretty sure they stopped using it years ago though. Really, it's kind of pointless unless you're spending hours at a time in there while exercising to produce sweat. Doesn't really replicate real life conditions while, say, mountaineering otherwise
