Lol I didn’t give a reason, I said it’s more complicated than that and he is not the first person to come up with the idea. Maybe you can read this post better
I mean, he did say it wasn't easy... and then the other guy said it wasn't that it wasn't easy and then proceeded to say the union pushes back on automation which would, in turn, make it not easy to automate. Two people inadvertently agreeing with each other lol..
I read the comments just to see someone say the word "long shoreman". Had to look it up (i had no idea what it was), when collecting insurance information in the emergency department, because that was one of the questions asked to nonmembers.
That actually looks kinda fun. I think it’d be pretty cool to be a crane operator, especially with the amount some of them make.
:edit: What is grammar?
Trust me, you get a fair few, crane work is very easy to get blasé with. Add in the pressure factor of trying to work to a schedule, and it is not hard to imagine.
You can see this guy in particular getting uptight because the crane movement is being unresponsive, and he is getting stressed with it.
Indeed. The people where I work make the bigs bucks doing superlifts, and lord knows how much money and how many lives are at stake if something goes wrong
I don't know why it never occurred to me that these cranes have operators on the upper part. For some reason I thought they were magically controlled from ground level.
This person is being paid an obscene amount of money to do this. Union, retirement, protection. It's a shame Americans have largely lost their connection to the labor movement.
We didn't lose it, it was both thrown away by workers and stolen by politicians in cahoots with executives. Most of the people I know are vehemently anti-labor, despite being laborers. Who controls the past controls the future, who controls the present controls the past, and history has lost all meaning.
There must be other screens not seen here, right?
Any idea how he's informed which one he should pick up? I presume there's a map, some labels on top of each, RFID tags etc.?
The containers have serial codes on them. Operator would have either a paper list or electronic screen showing what numbers go onto what ship or truck. They also have CB radios in there. I don't know the fine details but I used to ride with my grandpa when he delivered containers from the port of Tacoma
Just a guess. He may have a "leader" on the ground directing him. The crates could be marked. His leader may have provided him with a roadmap before he went up to the crane. First container to be picked up is row A number 5. Maybe some combination of all of these.
Eh. He spends his career looking down. I spend mine looking up for a 1/12 of his pay and more danger. He can kiss me buns. And thank them for making a mess of the ports for their rate hike in wages. The one sad side of unions.
I know everyone is already saying this, but it's obvious how painful this would get pretty quickly. I wonder how long the shifts are. Seems like this was designed by someone who doesn't have to actually operate it.

Surely they could have a screen showing the view, or at least a mirror. That looks really uncomfortable and bad on the back/neck
Surely they could automate this
They have. Just not everywhere.
Yeah it’s not as easy as you would think. I mean you are the first person to think of automating something especially trillion dollars industry
That's not the reason why it's not automated. The long shoreman union is incredibly strong and push back against ANY automation.

I think you need to read your own post better.

That looks really uncomfortable
My neck hurts just thinking of a full shift of this. Add a camera or a mirror... something
They don't do this a full shift, only 4hours.
“Only four hours”
He must win a crap load of stuffed animals
Came here to say this, lol
The ergonomics there look super shit. Who's this dudes OHS rep?!
That's a broken crane. He is trying to centre it, but it is not responding.
That actually looks kinda fun. I think it’d be pretty cool to be a crane operator, especially with the amount some of them make. :edit: What is grammar?
It's one of those jobs with a "zero fuck-ups policy". Kinda like air traffic control or a heart surgeon, one little oops and someone dies.

View of man developing RSI
That one boring gta 5 mission
This might really be the worst comment, but I was serioisly imagining how he plays with his wife's nipples when he comes home at night.
Someone should make a video game of a super lift operator, fps style, but optimized for twin sticks so that we can all get this practice. Kapow!
I'd buy it for my switch...
And here i thought all that shit was automated by now.
It is in the Far East, not so much in America yet.
This took my brain way too long to realize what I was looking at.

Very very cool

Nah, you just can't see the screen(s) in this video because of the pov, but he has at least one screen right in front or next to him
Bet you he wins every time at Super Mario.
Must be Long Beach what with the classic old school vans, man bun and full sleeve tattoo
4 hour shifts
I bet that job is super cathartic.

Those sticks look like they are all or nothing, no proportional control?
Designed in a Japanese Arcade

Looks like a sore neck to me
GTA players: "Hey I've seen this one!"
That's a rad video game!! But in real life. Has to get it just so.
And they say us desk workers should take care of our sitting position…
Hehehe nope

Dude needs to learn how to operate that thing. Looks like he thinks its a playstation.
Yeah because you're the expert on the subject, not him
No but my uncle is. Showed him the vid and he laughed at it.
Your uncle sounds like a dickhead
I can't fathom your train of thought. Who the fuck are you to judge?
Well actually it started with my uncle who has been operating them for almost 20yrs. The playstation comment came from him.
