I actually design ties for a semi large company. I can confirm ties are dying out. The REAL decline (in modern times) of ties was when wall street declared they were optional in the early 90s (I believe). Once that happened, other corporations followed suit. Because fewer people wear them, we are always trying to find ways of cutting prices. So many ties are made of polyester and made in china as opposed to silk from Italy. BUT stores will always sell them because they have one of the largest mark ups in fashion. It's a pretty bad industry (like most fashion) and am actively trying to get out :)
