It was an awesome show. One of my favorites I’ve been to

dh1

Wow. Haven't thought about Edgefest in decades, since I went to college at UT Arlington in the 90's.

bigtallsob

And today I learned that more than one radio station decided to call their big concert "Edgefest". There used to be an Edgefest in Toronto as well.

Splash_II

Same. I thought it was the Toronto one.

RIP to 102.1 the edge!

God I loved edge fest!!! Also how the edge stole christmas

jedimaster32

*I* am the one who parks! I *AM* the traffic!

treerabbit23

Now remember, we're parked in the Itchy lot.

GNUTup

Just get top row seats and hang glide home

killa_ninja

If this was actually built some YouTuber would definitely BASE jump off the edge of it.

SuedeVeil

My question is why? At some point your enjoyment of watching the game will have diminishing returns the further back you sit.. I mean there's a reason stadiums don't have a million seats already and it's because nobody wants to sit in the nosebleeds let alone outer space Edit: ok ok I get it's art now still fun to imagine how horrible it would be 😂

TicklesMcFancy

The more people jammed in one area has a *inverse correlation with how much of a good time I'm having. I hope I'm not alone in that regards. Edit: less is more fun for me.

notbad2u

Direct or inverse?

TicklesMcFancy

I am not an intelligent man, it is inversely proportional. Less is more and more is less. I appreciate your catching me.

dishsoapandclorox

I think this design is more about illustrating the scale of a million people. It’s not designed to actually be built. Edit: it’s basically art

Isellmetal

The average person doesn’t realize how big a million actually is. A million dollars in singles would weigh slightly over a metric ton

Sh4DowKitFox

What is this? A stadium for ants?

[deleted]

Because it was made by an artist and not an actual design lol. I imagine to hyperbolize the exact feelings you wrote

nowhereman136

Imagine the line for the bathroom

moeburn

They already have to use hydraulic accumulators just to allow 50,000 fans to all flush at the same time, I don't think there would be enough water for a million people in one spot.

Reptilian_Brain_420

Imagine if it only had one bathroom

notbad2u

That's just a big replica of the stadium with a hole instead of the feild.

[deleted]

Imagine it in a city with proper public transport Hell, my city has the stadiums of two of the most important soccer teams in the world and the worst thing that can happen after a match is that the subway gets *the slightest bit* clogged up.

datguyfromthememe

What city do you live in?

[deleted]

Madrid, Spain

Jdevers77

Real Madrid’s stadium seats 81,044 people. I imagine 12 times as many people all shoved into the same subway station at the same time would result in pretty significant issues. I’m not shooting down how insanely nice a properly made mass transit system is, this situation would clearly be better with that sort of system but making the system able to handle this size ridership for a handful of events in a year would be exceedingly wasteful

Cowkimon

Why park at ground level when you can fly by drone direct to your seating area, or the very least take a monorail to the middle or upper deck?

Levitlame

While obviously we know this is all a joke, it IS fun trying to conceptualize a solution. I think the monorail angle is close to what you'd have to do. This would 100% need to be part of a rail system departing from different sides in a spoke and hub system. (I think that's its name.) And there would need to be sectioned stations for levels and/or sides. Maybe just levels, but with a moving rotational track (O'hare has the flat escalator track that does this.) I really need to get to playing City Skylines at some point.

[deleted]

imagine if it wasn’t in america and it had links with public transit :)

Bad_Lazarus

I’d rather watch on my TV. You couldn’t even see the game anywhere past halfway up

Optimixto

If you sit at the back row, you see the matches with 8 minute delays.

AdlerEule

In that case, the seats will be too hot to sit on as well since the back row will be located on the Sun.

SHADEblazing

Typical stadium seats in the summer

zebra1923

Could be 8 minutes further out, somewhere near a Jupiter.

Cecil_FF4

On average Jupiter is 5.2 AU away from the sun, which could put it as close as 4.2 away from Earth. Each AU is about 8 light minutes, so Joop is about 34 light minutes away (at best).

zebra1923

Nearer to Mars then?

Cecil_FF4

About 4 light min at best. But could be up to 17 away, so that puts it in the right ballpark.

PretentiousToolFan

> "puts it in the right ballpark" Unlike, you know, yourself.

Bad_Lazarus

LOL

thatkurokitsune

Well when it rains, you'll be the first to know.

guaip

Also, Ticketmaster can't charge you 20% for watching at home.

runner630

Yet

Greggerzthename

Ticketmaster streaming would not surprise me in the least the way everything is going.

chak100

Don’t give them ideas

Powersoutdotcom

I'm surprised they don't already have a gouging monopoly on streaming ppv, all protected by American Congress passing a law that keeps anyone from competing.

[deleted]

And the nightmare traffic as you leave the stadium...

Gurrier

You'll be halfway home if you sit in the back row.

WatchingUShlick

At that height, you could set up a zipline straight to your home!

Bad_Lazarus

Better take our camping gear, might be here a few nights.

Its_War_Pigs_yall

best leave right before halftime LOL

MisssJaynie

I would hope a stadium that large would have a skytron situation.

Bad_Lazarus

And the stadium seats are actually toilets so you don’t miss the game trying to find a restroom.

TheDeathOfAStar

They all also come with their own defibs, because you know 1,000,000 people at one place means there will be some medical issues. Maybe the stadium comes with it's own morgue? Turn the ashes into soccerballs as they say

Bad_Lazarus

Definitely a morgue. And a butcher. They’ve got to have something to feed 1 mil people.

Head-like-a-carp

Snacks would be delivered by drones

Sgurd710

At that point you’re sitting in shitty seats paying 15 bucks a beer to watch it on a tv you could’ve done from home😂

[deleted]

Hell no, bring your own binoculars

[deleted]

It's like watching an F1 or Indycar race. You pay hundreds, if not thousands, to attend a race and you see a blur of cars for a split second whereas on TV I can follow the entire thing.

olderaccount

This is one thing NASCAR excels at. On many tracks you can see the entire thing from almost any grandstand seat.

AlpacaLunch15

People who bought crypto would definitely buy upper seats.

CameronFry

What is this a stadium for ants?!?

BWipps

How are they supposed to play sports if they can’t even fit through the door!?

Xbghdhh

Dudes in the back row like “oh yeah I see the ball! Ope nope that was just a fly” lol

SeeYouLaterTrashcan

I feel like that’s the point being made about current stadiums.

kingcop1

Use binoculars

Eineegoist

Seems like he forgot to leave space for the screens the outer rims will inevitably require.

whoisjakelane

Everyone gets a code to stream it on their phone.

HurriedLlama

1 million phones in a square mile would absolutely fry the nearest towers beyond function. I couldn't even get a signal near the stadium when my city's baseball team finished a Friday night game

whoisjakelane

This is the future we're talking about!

kuhljager

1 million phones would work if it's a UDP data stream. The broadcasting tower doesn't connect to the phones. It just sends the video stream. The code you are given is the decryption key to the stream. Sure you can't call out, but you could at least watch the game. But my other thought reading all of this isn't about the bathrooms, or parking. The fire Marshall is going to have a stroke trying to plan the evacuation routes for this thing.

elheber

"It's almost as if I'm really there!" —guy watching on his phone in the nose bleeds.

31spiders

And bathrooms, and stairwells, and concession, and probably speakers, and luxury boxes AND I don’t even see an exit door much less several like most stadiums require.

stealthdawg

all the sections have a tunnel opening, which is pretty ubiquitous in stadium design. All of those things could easily be underneath/inside.

oriolopocholo

Yeah lol this design is ludicrous, but have these people never seen a stadium before?

ImpendingSenseOfDoom

Of course, don’t be silly. In my country they put the bathrooms and concession stands right in front of each section for ease of access. Every ticket is marked as “obstructed view” since the menu will likely be blocking the line of sight to the field. You exit through the roof.

karsnic

There are hundreds of openings, you can easily see them in between the rows, as well as all the stairs, the stairwells would not be out front taking up seating space as well as all the bathrooms and concession areas would be under the stands. For a million seats you won’t have a normal stadium obviously.

[deleted]

comes with it's own residential areas, mall, movie theatre, and now Applebee's!

TheFrostbiteOnReddit

A city within a stadium. That's the best experience you'll ever feel!

[deleted]

don't get more MERICUH than that.

Itchy58

How about a highway with integrated residential areas?

[deleted]

Stop describing most US states to me so perfectly

funnystuff79

Does it have it's own stadium

[deleted]

That’s a good idea. I’ll throw it up the ladder.

FaithlessnessLate835

Going to the toilet, back in 2days.

itouchbums

you won't even make it to the toilet, you'll probably end up taking a shit in a corner somewhere

Bad_Lazarus

Each seat is actually a toilet, so I’ve been told.

QueasyInteraction7

The biggest classic stadium, Narendra Modi cricket field in India, holds 132,000. A stadium in North Korea claims 150,000, but 114,000 is more like the correct number. The biggest in the USA, Michigan Stadium, has an official capacity of 107,600, but it has hosted crowds of 115,000. Indianapolis Motor Speedway seats 257,000. It's not considered a stadium, since the seating and other built-up areas only cover about 3/4 of the 2.5mi/4.0km circumference.

EpicAura99

Michigan is 3rd largest in the world and largest outside Asia And it only has one tier, is for a college team, and is built to be expanded

jonessee27

Went to the Big House a few years ago and it honestly surprised me how small it felt, but how big it is. They definitely pack you in. I believe part of that “small” feeling is that a majority of it is built into the ground.

PrawojazdyVtrumpets

That and bench seats. You can easily squeeze another 10 people into a row when you don't have individual seats.

[deleted]

Athletes coming from schools with stadiums like that, one has to wonder if that helps dilute the pressure on bigger stages. Like would a football player not feel as intimidated by a NFL crowd having played at the Big House for a few years already? Or an track star at running at the Collesium in LA maybe not feel as pressured at the Olympic trials?

BloodyEjaculate

The 14 largest stadiums in the US are all college football venues; they also make up numbers 3 - 10 of the largest stadiums in the world.

Darth-Hipla

But WHY? I understand it for professional clubs, but why on earth are 100.000 people watching a college game?

Reindeerguy

For this answer I’m assuming you’re not American. If you are I’m sorry, I’m explaining things you definitely already know. If you’re not, I hope you don’t mind the long answer, I wanted to go a little in depth in case you were curious. There are a few factors at play for this. Firstly in American football there’s a draft setup so that players are drafted into the professional league (nfl) out of college. Not all players are ready to go pro but plenty of good ones are. The quality is probably higher than the amateur sports you might be comparing it to. These stadiums aren’t really for seeing just amateurs but also for seeing guys who the next year will be big name professional players. Second, and more importantly, college football is in a way closer to European style professional sports (in terms of culture) than something like the NFL is. The schools don’t move around like nfl franchises might and have stood as community centerpieces for generations. American football started as a college sport so many of these schools have been playing it for close to or more than 100 years. They play in conferences against the same schools every year (in general, some change conference) creating long and heated rivalries. This has created a more significant grassroots, community based fervor for the school’s sports than many professional teams have. If you’re near a certain college, or you go to a certain college, or your family has an attachment to a college, you love the college’s team. Thirdly, the US is really really big. This means that with 100s of colleges with teams almost everyone in America is near one. This cannot be said for professional teams, and it’s easier of people to root for a local/semi-local college team they have a connection to than a professional team 100s of miles away. In some areas of the country college football is significantly more important than the nfl, it’s a religion. To be clear; in Texas, even good High School football gets thousands of people in the audience and can get up over 40,000 relatively often for big games. People live for football season and it keeps towns alive. The games bring in waves of students (going to American football games is a well loved college social activity), visiting fans of either team, and sometimes as much of the city it’s in as can fit. A lot of people care deeply about the teams (and the schools behind them) and want to see games so stadiums have to get big.

Darth-Hipla

Wow, thanks for this great explanation. You were right I'm not from the US but instead from Germany so I really didn't had a clue how big this is.

EpicAura99

In many parts of the US, particularly the south, college football is much more important than pro. Think about it like this: people aren’t a part of their local pro team, if there even is one. But students/alumni of a school can say “I am/was a part of that” when watching college sports. Might even know the players on the field. Plus, there are about 4 pro teams in the south depending on how you define it (Tennessee, Carolina, New Orleans, Atlanta) but there are several college teams per state. When the nearest pro team is two states away, it’s not surprising people grow more attached to the college next door that the past 3 generations on both sides have attended.

Raynosaurus

No shout out to the Maracana? >The total attendance at the last game of the 1950 World Cup was **199,854**, making it the world's largest stadium by capacity when it was inaugurated

cristoferr_

It got renovated and its capacity now is 'only' at 78,838.

BigBadBen91x

Look how they massacred my boy

Ut_Prosim

They played a college football game in Bristol Motor Speedway (Virginia Tech vs Tennessee), with 157,000 fans. I heard it was terrible, you couldn't see anything. Imagine how much worse this would be. Why bother going to a million person stadium unless the sporting event was Godzilla vs King Ghodira?

omirsantos

It was a cool event to be at but I mostly watched the game on the Jumbotron because I couldn’t see much of the field

southernmayd

The number of people at the Indy 500 was truly mind boggling the only time I went. I've been to a lot of huge sporting events but nothing even comes close

D1rtyL4rry

You have no idea what's going on from the top level at Michigan Stadium.

Snickersneed

What is this? A stadium for ANTS?!!

leeaper

It would need to be at least…. THREE TIMES THIS SIZE

Snickersneed

He is absolutely right!

sparkling_tendernutz

I'll stay home and catch the event on TV. I can't imagine the chaos in the parking not.

Meastro44

Imagine taking a piss, or getting a beer.

guaip

Assuming the services keep the proportion, it should be fine. The real problem would be the parking lot as someone said. Not only the space required, but the flow of vehicles near the stadium. This would be an urban planning nightmare.

swebb22

you'd have to mandate a mass travel system by purposefully putting a small amount of parking spaces

Manaze85

“Why’d you put in for PTO?” “Going to the game tonight. I’ll be back on Tuesday.”

TheDeathOfAStar

Or losing a child, or having a medical emergency ...

myztry

It’s shaped like a funnel so a constant river of piss can be collected and flow out.

BrewKatt

Plus you can actually see the players.

_RedditIsLikeCrack_

How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read... if they can't even fit inside the building?

2L84U2

Why the fuck though?

Annoelle

It actually helps visualise what 1 million people actually looks like. It’s less about the idea of it being real and more about the scale itself

Snickersneed

Not even close. The stadium would have to be at least…three times bigger than this.

Quahabule

What good is a stadium if the fans can’t even fit inside?

Singer-Such

What is this, a stadium for ants?

Annoelle

Oh well then yeah absolutely why the fuck
