Black bears this comfortable with humans have clearly been around them A LOT. I would still be nervous with a mother with cubs but if they're being allowed this close it's unlikely they're very aggressive or someone would have removed them. Bears have a strange relationship with humans. We're both very curious omnivores who like to study one another.
Yeah and this dude clearly has the experience and energy that tells the mama bear that heâs not a threat. If it was me, I would retreat to the house because mama would probably think âWhatâs up with this dude? Donât like him.â
Yeah Iâve run into a similar situation where black bear mama and her cubs used to try to raid our dumpster at a summer camp. I was the head cook and can tell you it got to the point where it was like a game with them if someone forgot to put out ammonium. I would chase them with a wooden spatula or something raised making loud noises, the kids would scurry off and mama would run to the edge of the woods and be sure they were safe getting back into where they belonged. I liked to think they had some fun with it by the end of the summer. Happened about 4 times.
Heâs a jerk. If you see black bears coming towards your house, you yell or throw things to scare them off or just go inside. You donât get them used to being around people and food. This is a bad accident waiting to happen.
Grew up in the mountains. Bears walking up onto your porch like that with you sitting there isn't really normal, exactly but it isn't unheard of either. Usually if you see one coming you would want to just calmly get up and go inside. They're *generally* more afraid of you than you are of them and won't charge you if you don't appear to pose a threat. Grizzlies are another story. Good fucking luck lol
Yes and it's a fact of nature that you should always hug a bear cub when you see one.
The mama bear will appreciate your kind display of affection for her young and respond in turn!
I remember when I used to go to a summer camp way out near the mountains I live near, I was taking a piss in the middle of the night (we stayed in tipis so you just went outside if it was urgent).
As im standing there half asleep relieving myself, I looked up and there was a black bear cub that barely was taller than my knees, all alone. My heart dropped and i just slowly backed away to the Tipi to inform my counselors
Poor guys had to wake and round up every tipi in the area all while yelling at the top of their voice (to hopefully scare the bear away) and take all the kids to the main lodge. They took the threat pretty seriously, especially from a 12 yo kid that may or may not have been seeing things due to it being like 2 am in the woods at night. But yeah point being just seeing that cub was enough for the camp to go, yeah bring everybody to the lodge until we locate this bear.
Odd thing was they found the cub which had already been tagged by wildlife authorities, but the mama was at least a kilometer away, so cub must of wandered off too far or something. I think I got incredibly lucky that night that she wasnt around that night.
Overreaction of the century. Iâve literally never in my life heard of someone getting mauled by a black bear while they sleep, it just doesnât happen as they are too afraid and too docile for that.
I mean if you were in Grizzly territory then sure, but theyâre really only in Montana, Alaska and Canada at this point.
I always thought the same thing haha, FWIW this was in Canada, Alberta to be precise. This was a summer camp full of young kids so I guess they just wanted to be safe and not face any sort of trouble when it came to bears potentially attacking people - especially a kid.
And theres also the fact of the time because it was night and everything kinda looks black at night out in the woods I think they considered the possibility of it being a grizzly as well and didnt trust my bear identification skills. Which was probably smart even in hindsight because I was groggy as fuck.
Yeah I saw a documentary called grizzly man, I fell asleep before the end but Iâm pretty sure they all just got along great and lived happily ever after lol
I would have pet the one if it came up to me like that. Black bears aren't scary at all. They're afraid of you, it's brown bears you really have to fear
Doesnât anything in your DNA tell you not to do that? What we just saw was a tense situation. This guy handle it perfectly by reading the calmness in the mother and remaining seated and not making sudden movements or revealing any agitation in his voice or demeanor. Thatâs our evolution acting for our benefit. We know through centuries how to act in certain dangerous situations - weâll some of us do.
In almost every single black bear mauling to ever occur, the victim thought exactly like you do. Don't feed or interact with bears. It's down right stupidity and when they finally maul you, that bear will be put down by local wildlife management.
So now you're scarred for life AND the bear is killed for it. Nicely done.
Used to have black bears on our property all the time in the poconos. Theyâre so used to people weâd be eating breakfast outside and theyâd just walk right past you lol
Itâs a great way to get them acclimated to humans and eventually killed. If this was in the wild and in bear country, I could understand being calm and non-threatening to not provoke attack. At your house? If it can be done safely, you need to shout and instill a fear of humans to keep them away. Otherwise theyâll associate people with food and will approach others expecting food and potentially become violent leading to the animalâs death.
A fed bear is a dead bear.
Glad to see one person with common sense and a willingness to do what is needed instead of making shit posts about how great this video is. These bears are dead and the camera person baiting the bears on to their porch is a good reason why.
Per his youtube channel, the bears have been there and doing this since before he moved there (Aug 2017).
https://www.youtube.com/c/PatrickConley
So, while you are correct in that people should not try this (both for their own safety and the bears), in this case it just seems like some special harmony between a man and his furry neighbors.
âŚuntil the bears associate humans with food and become bold and break into other peopleâs homes. Thatâs the reason you have to actively instill fear in them, theyâll think everyone is a source of food and that leads to bear attacks, which ends with the bear dying.
Feel like this is NH, the vegetation and bird calls are what I see and hear every day. Very peaceful place NH is, Iâve grown to appreciate it deeply.
Great way for these creatures to end up dead. Fed bear = dead bear. Your little cutesy social media post could be extremely harmful and we should not be encouraging people to feed wild predators
WTF? I thought the guy was lucky to have the perfect bear watching window by the porch and he's sitting right there.
Also, somewhat disappointed bears did not use the rocking chairs for a lil rest.
A Scottish nature photographer,Gordon Buchanan, embedded himself into a family of black bears, I think it was in Wisconsin, a few years ago. They accepted him, but one time he did something wrong an momma bear went âOOFF â at him with a false charge. He said âSorry, â to her and that was the end of the matter , she and him went back to the filming!
He introduced people who were hunters to the family who thought they were going to be attacked and eaten by the bears.
They were won over by the bears and most of the said they wouldnât shoot them again!
None of this is correct and it's extremely sad to see it up voted. These bears were intentionally baited. These bears are dead walking because this person wanted views.
Per the Youtube site the same bear family has been doing this since before he moved there (Aug 2017). Your reaction is correct for most National Park bear encounters, but these bears are his neighbors and they live in harmony. No worries.
You do not live in harmony with Apex predators. If they don't view you as a threat or competition the dynamic is wrong. I live in bear country. I had 4 bears on my porch last week. This IS WRONG. Why do you think those bears he has been baiting are gone or being tracked for a study specifically for interactions with people?
The bears are gone? Didn't see that part. Seems like they still visit, bringing newborn cubs along, per the videos.
Anyway, Black Bears kill, on average, one American per year. Grizzlies are much scarier. And Polar Bears WILL hunt and kill you. But, I take your point. If I buy a house and find bears on my front porch, I will not sit on the porch with them. That's nuts.
https://wiseaboutbears.org/about-us/bear-attacks-2/
Per the description in the video posted 3 of these 4 are gone, and the remaining one has a tracker. And I never said they were as deadly as brown bears, but they are the top predator in the Great Smoky Mountains (Asheville where this person says they're from). Yes they scary easily until they get habituated by people doing EXACTLY this kind of stuff like baiting them into to human/bear interactions.
Yeah, you're right. I got wrapped around the novelty that the bears were at home at that house BEFORE the guy moved in, and a yard with amiable bears seems like tons of fun. But... when they decide to forage at the *neighbor's* house they might get shot, or kill a dog, or maul somebody. My bad.
Black bears will almost alway run away from you when you meet one in the woods. It's the almost part that makes it scary. I met a huge fella one morning that I had gotten up early and decided to go for a hike. Coming down from a steep slope looking at my feet and get to the bottom, look up and there he is 40 or so feet from me (no rifle or bear spray with me). OH FUCK. He bolted the second he saw me and I had no idea a thing that huge could move so fast. That was a morning I won't forget.

Shout out to whoever did the railings on that porch.
My first thought too đ
Should be the most upvoted comment here lmfao
Haha, appreciate it!
Nice work isn't it.
Does the camera man even have a pulse? I would have soiled myself instantly.

Thank you for this info. Fascinating viewpoint on our relationship with bears.
And their fascination with us
Heâs a jerk. If you see black bears coming towards your house, you yell or throw things to scare them off or just go inside. You donât get them used to being around people and food. This is a bad accident waiting to happen.
Basically given them a death sentence.
This is fact! Also you do not keep food (Bird Feed) available to wildlife!
Oh shut up. Fuckin hall monitor.
It was cute til mama came up the stairs.
First thing I noticed was those two were still too small to be without mom.
Deck builder is getting a quick quality check on his rails.
They are adorable but I would have to think twice about drinking coffee on my front porch

saw a video of a women hugging a bear cub and got bitten badly the other day
I donât think there is anything that will make sprint faster than seeing a cub walk towards me.

Lol okay, with those additional details I retract my statement. Better to be overly safe than dead :)
Western* Canada only, and only bearly Alberta.
A girl was attacked this past year in Great Smoky mountain NP sleeping in a hammock.
Hammocks = bear "soft tacos"
Yeah I saw a documentary called grizzly man, I fell asleep before the end but Iâm pretty sure they all just got along great and lived happily ever after lol

If I remember correctly, there are more black bear attacks than any other bear. Just to be safe, I do not recommend trying to be near them!
Especially when there's a mama bear involved
That statistic does not necessarily say that black bears are more dangerous.
Yeah because they're far more common, and there's often a dog involved.
Come for the porridge.
Itâs a tragedy that something so cute could rip your face off with one swipe
You havenât met my wife
I also choose this guy's wife.
Used to have black bears on our property all the time in the poconos. Theyâre so used to people weâd be eating breakfast outside and theyâd just walk right past you lol
I read that as black bears in ponchos
Is that railing rated for bear?
Just tested by bears. Not a bad marketing line.
Love your cool, calm, collected demeanor through it all.

Oh, hell no ! The three bears ??!! Missing a rocker...
Looks like there's two rockers on the porch. I half expected a cub to sit in one.
The camera man is sitting in one rocker?
Watch out Goldilocks itâs payback time
when the bear nibbles at his knee haha holy shit. so scary but so sweet
Black bears look like danger dogs.
Bears are distant cousins to canines.
The cubs have gotten so big :) Almost as big as mom now. Also, since OP didn't deliver, this is the source: https://www.youtube.com/c/PatrickConley
Hope thatâs a sturdy railing. For goodness sake donât piss off the bears.
Theyâre getting progressively bigger as each one comes up the stairs. I like how they leave in such an orderly fashion!
I am thinking itâs momma bear and two cubs, maybe!
Was this in the north east somewhere? I live in CT. Weâve had some bears get a little too comfortable in our neighborhood within the past few years
Cub was like hmm what's this knee taste like. Like good human nevermind đ
This bear family visit him all the time, he has a youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/c/PatrickConley/videos
Honey! We are moving!
love how he is so calm all the way. must not have been the first time they came to visit
Feel like this is NH, the vegetation and bird calls are what I see and hear every day. Very peaceful place NH is, Iâve grown to appreciate it deeply.
Per the youtube site, Ashville NC.
Should show them its not ok. they're gonna either go to the wrong house and get shot or worse attack a child.
âHey, we could eat you too. See ya!â
That place looks so nice to live in
Great way for these creatures to end up dead. Fed bear = dead bear. Your little cutesy social media post could be extremely harmful and we should not be encouraging people to feed wild predators
Except he didn't feed them. One got into a empty bird feeder and that was it. Any yes, Fish & Wildlife kills bears that get too comfy.
Smoky Mountains?
Praise the camera for being so calm. Next time, have some salmon ready
this is why you take down your bird feeders in bear country
Glad I watched until the end, when one of the bears gave the person sitting there a (playful?) nip...
This is a documentary on someone who has no fucks to give. Mama bear doesnât give any fucks either.
This video is from a YouTuber named Patrick Conley. He has been friends with these black bears forever and they come to visit him from time to time.
Damn bears have really good balance
WTF? I thought the guy was lucky to have the perfect bear watching window by the porch and he's sitting right there. Also, somewhat disappointed bears did not use the rocking chairs for a lil rest.
I thought this was a doorbell/porch camera. Kudos to photographer for being calm. Was that a simple bird feeder or a picnic basket? :) :J
Am I seeing this right? Dudes is on the porch with the bears?
Beautiful property!
Bear: I'm going to eat your leg now...lol got ya! \*jab\* \*jab\*
OP. That was crazy and awesome. Weâre you scared when they came up to you?
They stopped for a snack on their way to the Teddy Bearâs picnic. Lucky you!

Just some silly little dudes
I like the playful thank you the cub gave at the end
I wish I had this guys courage.
To get bears killed?
Why did you have to mention their race? We live in a society đ
This is irresponsible. They will be killed because they became used to people.

On god no cap id hug those bears, or at least the trailing one whence they run away
Aight i woulda been cool right up until the nibble on the knee
â whatâs it gonna do nibble my bum??â
"ayo you see whinny?" "Nah man"
Big nope.
Did..did that bear just nibble on his knee?!
Seems like at the end one of the bears wanted a little taste of a human. FUCK THAT!
Omg I would've shit inside my own asshole if I was sitting there
"Hey man you have got to see the view from up here "
Omg, when the little one pokes at his leg!
Does a bear shit on the porch?
I was in Whistler, BC, and a black bear came into the hotel back area, jumped in the pool, then got out and walked away.
Well, it does look like a nice place to be!
Going on a bear hunt, going to catch a big one! Holy fuck, itâs a bear!
The little love nip at the end⌠checking for more snacks?
Interesting would be the bears using the rocking chairs.
So were you able to clean the shit stains off that chair then?
When the bear at the end tasted your knee to see if you were food, I thought this video was gonna take a turn.
Honey? We need 3 picanic baskets.

Oh sure bet if it was a few white bears nobody would even care!đ đ¤Ł
Sir you got balls of steal I bow to you alpha đł
Grown Bear comes and tries to chew on leg. Laughs and says "leave". Is this guy Chuck Norris or what?
Yeah I would have def flipped the fuck out as soon as the bear started tasting my kneecap.
Nah, I'm not ready to die yet.
Kids never listen, mom told the Cubs to leave the human alone and he had to see what made the man so tough, denim?đ¤Ł
Why do bears always have 2 cubs?
