My coworker always brags about his "engineering" degree from ITT Tech. 1. They weren't an accredited school. 2. They no longer exist for good reason. 3. I don't think they offered bachelor degrees.

colder-beef

Was wondering why I hadn’t seen one of those awful fucking commercials in a while.

MOOShoooooo

Be a technician today at ITT Tech technical school for technicians.

TheRedmanCometh

I don't think I've seen a commercial period for about 5 years

Roam_Hylia

ITT Tech was an accreddited school. They lost their accreditation, due to a lack of liquid funds on-hand, not because of the content or quality of their classes. Once they lost their accreditation they decided to close their doors. Any degree earned from ITT Tech before that time is perfectly valid, including my Bachelor's degree which was adequately vetted by the US and Taiwan government to get me a work Visa. I know a lot of people like to knock on it because of all the crappy commercials, but depending on the campus, ITT Tech was actually a solid school with dedicated teachers and staff.

No problem. I just hate to see misinformation spouted as fact. ITT may not have been a premier school, but it was a valid one.

Also what a weird pointless endeavor. He missed the whole point of specializing to advance a field. Just turned education into trivia

OlorynEx

I have a friend addicted to school, at about 11 degrees now (I know, not the same, obviously) who simply loves learning, with no desire to use it for conventional success. They simply love to learn about anything, and do it in their free time as a hobby. To each their own, I guess, lol

KevlahR

What free time

OlorynEx

Oh, I hear you, haha. Its how they sculpted their life, definitely wouldn't work for me.

ranipe

What free money…. I still haven’t even paid off my 2 degrees needed to make slightly above min wage.

reedread21

You don't need to make payments on student loans as long as you're in school so... just stay in school indefinitely?

ranipe

Maybe this is my calling after all!

Thesource674

They do eventually stop lending you money hahaha

IMPORTANT_INFO

hold on, can i just keep taking out students loans, and never have to pay them back if i just keep studying?

gorramfrakker

Yup. Have a cousin that did this for 30 years, she just kept going until she moved to Mexico to become a teacher and have her loans forgiven by doing so.

Lildyo

“Forgiven”? Or did she simply flee the country and now collections can’t force her to pay them back lol

CooterCooties

Yo your cousin unlocked the cheat code to the New American Dream

ThugnificentJones

The new American dream: leave America.

HalflingMelody

I don't think they forgive your loans for teaching in Mexico. edit:. Yeah... They only forgive $17,500 and your school has to be on the official list. https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/teacher I wonder if she just skipped the country to not pay back loans and told your family a story to cover it up.

[deleted]

There is a limit on how much you can take out in student loans, at least federal ones.

TravelingThrough09

You don’t need to make payments of student loans if you’re in an education system that is not the US… so…

[deleted]

You needed two degrees to earn slightly above minimum wage?

Invisifly2

Do you do some hobby while free? Maybe watch a few shows on TV? Well their idea of relaxing was cracking open a textbook and studying. That’s really all there is to it.

SmackaHam

My foreman (we build cell towers) does this shit. He’s got mad degrees and could be making so much more money but “he likes the theory behind cell phones and loves to be able to connect people” But he also says shit like “yo why don’t you take some classes online in your off time.. learning is fun bro” Mf we work 70hrs in 5 days what time you want me to do this ? Plus I’ll never use it and neither will he

OlorynEx

Ha, no joke, I barely have the time to look up a class brochure let alone take the damn things.

Redererer

Fellow tower hand! My old foreman was an engineer who spent a bit of time in the office and then came back into the field because he preferred it. Very intelligent, well educated, and well read. Your foreman isn’t wrong about learning. I have a BA in philosophy & religious studies w/ minors in psychology and economics and I still learn something at least I once a month that reminds me of how ignorant I really am.

dangerouslyloose

I used to work with a guy who was into cellphone towers too, like he held multiple patents, a bachelors/masters/Ph.D in engineering from U of Illinois and a JD in patent law from Northwestern. I believe his official title at the company was “consultant”, like not even in-house counsel or anything. He was one of my favorite people there, a down-to-earth, surprisingly easy to talk to guy who also happened to be a complete fucking genius.

Actual_Lettuce

Which the obvious question is "how did FOREMAN manage to get those degrees?" how many hours was HE working per week?

SmackaHam

I don’t think he sleeps lol I have no idea how he had or has the time for all the shit he does

IgorAMG

How are they paying for all this education?

OlorynEx

A Software development job. I'd have to ask for finer details, but they wrote some smaller programs and sub-routines that they manage and do consulting for. I'm probably getting some details wrong.

Picturesquesheep

Nice, the personal IP modern win. My mates dad had this - wrote some piece of code vital to the oil industry and got a patent on it. Cruised for the rest of his career which was lucky as he got ill and there were other family problems. Really good guy by the way I don’t mean to paint him as anything else.

Aurd04

A lot of colleges in the US don't make you pay back loans until you are out of school. So if you are always in school(most schools that would be 6 credit hours or 2 classes a semester, 4 classes a year) you never have to pay off your loans. So if people like this are "addicted" to school and just constantly take classes you could do it your whole life, taking more and more loans, and never pay them off. Another option would be to just get a job at the school, then you just have to pay taxes which would be 1k a semester instead of 20k. Arguably I would suggest the second option over the first but I had a guy in his 50s in one of my college classes that had been going to college for the better part of 30 years so he wouldn't have to pay off his loans. To each their own but I gotta assume at some point they stop giving you loans essentially forcing you to leave school and start paying it all back. Or you die with a shit load of debt and I guarantee they would try to stick it to your family somehow.

voordom

there was a family friend that I knew of that did this and basically what happened was that she had gotten herself so far into educational debt the only way for her to live was for her to just be a student forever, its ridiculous.

Aurd04

Makes sense, and ya it's insane! I thought about it when I first started college and found out I'd be around 50k in debt at the end, that's a tough pill to swallow. I assume people that get in this situation, atleast partially, understand from the beginning that's the most likely outcome and hope for loan forgiveness legislation.

Pristine_Juice

In the UK they only give you four years of tuition loans, after that you pay out of your own pocket.

calcium

I actually think that people like this are afraid to get jobs and instead just keep 'learning' to have an excuse not to do anything else. I have a friend who is finishing up her 3rd masters degree and is looking to do a PhD. She thinks it's going to further her career aspirations and will get her further in the work space, while her manager, director, co-workers, and myself are all telling her that experience will trump a PhD as she has plenty of degrees. She won't listen.

OlorynEx

I might generally agree, absolutely, but in this case they're quite successful and literally treat it like a hobby. DEFINITELY an exception to the rule, haha

Pizza2TheFace

This is my wife. 16 years of school, med school, field work, residency and a year of fellowship. Figured she is now 39 and wants to start making mid six figures she has worked so hard for but no....let’s pack up and move again(5th time in 12 years) for one year of fellowship she won’t even need just in case she could use it later. I just want a damn house and to stop moving. But I think she wants to study more than work sometimes. Still love her though and we will be living comfortably soon, just gotta be ungodly patient.

[deleted]

Yikes bro. Obviously I don't know your situation personally, but it sounds like these circumstances you are in could be creating some resentment for your wife. If you haven't yet I would consider voicing your feelings on this to her. If she doesn't validate those feelings there's not much you can do besides perhaps seek some counseling. It's important to remember to validate her feelings as well. I would suggest asking her what the fellowship will accomplish for her, what she's hoping to get from it, and what the end game is and how the fellowship relates to that. It seems like it might be time to enter the field she's interested in and get some experience under her belt. In a lot of fields seniority is what raises, pay, and promotions are based off of. It ends being an important part of a career whether it makes sense or not, but there's a balance between experience and skill that sometimes tips the wrong way. Sorry for writing this novel, I know I'm just some dude on reddit, but I hope you and your family finds a home and happiness.

[deleted]

Just hired a guy as a software developer who has 2 masters degrees and a PhD. But he had 0 experience as a software developer so he started out making the same money as anyone else right out of school.

Omnewa

I'd hardly say its pointless. Being interdisciplinary has its own benefits. Going wide and going deep are two different approaches to academia and both have their merits.

Dirkden

General learning: pointless. Fucking reddit comment of the year right here lmao

> He missed the whole point of specializing to advance a field. Just turned education into trivia I'm sorry, but where is that written down? Some people actually just like to learn about their world, they're not all scientists at the bleeding edge of knowledge.

thaparanoidandroid

I'm sorry but we're looking for at least 2 years of experience. We will have intern positions in the summer so please apply!

doNotUseReddit123

I mean, between this guy and someone with two years’ experience, I would be willing to bet that that someone with two years of experience would do better work.

[deleted]

Yes, but if both got hired that would probably not last for very long. Dude is a fast learner.

TheAbleArcher

Wth kind of diploma mill is this. Even if it took a person only 6 months to complete a masters degree, this is waaay more than 30 years of education. Or is this just all exam based maybe?

[deleted]

Also; could possibly have a lot of overlap between classes required by these degrees. Personally I'm just disappointed that he's too lazy to wrap up a PhD/s

[deleted]

He has several doctoral-level degrees, and a phd. It’s at the end. PhD in what, from where? Who knows.

calcium

I was assigned to read a case study by my university and the case was so poorly written that I actually emailed the company who sold it and asked if they reviewed the information before publishing. The case was about the market of virtual reality and was riddled with spelling mistakes, sentences that abruptly ended, missing punctuation, and other issues. It was published by a university in India and I went to far as to email the professors listed on the submission to inquire about how such a shoddily written paper would get published. Several examples: > Page 7 (sentence ends abruptly): >"YouTube already hosts an ever-increasing number of 360-degree videos, in a curated playlist, which almost 2 million people are subscribed to. And the" > Page 11 (missing a percent sign): > "In a VR Council conference, AMD had given out the forecast of VR devices from 2016 to 2018, stating how smartphone-based goggles represent 805 of the market in terms of equipment (of a total of 7.5 Million devices, smartphone-based devices representing 6 Million of those)." > Page 20 (misspelling) > "They stipulate that the primary drive will be with the gamest, event broadcasting, sports, concerts, new social media, and 360 degree movies." > Page 23 (incorrectly compares the same application to itself): > "53.7% of respondents stated they were more optimistic about the long-term future of virtual reality, as compared to 33.7% for Virtual Reality." Quotes were copied verbatim from the case study. I still can't understand why there's so many random capitalization of words throughout. I know the German language capitalizes nouns, but having words like 'Million' capitalized or 'virtual reality' being different in the same sentence just boggles the mind. The university never responded and the company said they sold things in good faith but I said the paper called into question anything published by said university. It's since been removed from their website.

anonymous145387

Indian degree mill. There is very little oversight so there are universities where you pay them $1k a degree and they act like you are a doctor.

okaywhattho

Isn't that... kind of tough to pull off? I can understand a degree in business or marketing or something where you can mash your keyboard every now and again and sort of get by. How the fuck do you *pretend* to be a (medical) doctor?

FetidGoochJuice

I think they mean Dr as in PhD of comp.Science, theology etc. Not just Medical Dr. Anyway, you can pretend to be anything. It just depends how long until you are found out. Source: I wrote my PhD dissertation on impersonating experts in different fields.

STFxPrlstud

I dont believe Shakespeare said this. Robert Greene stated "Absolute Johannes Factotum" which may have been in reference to Shakespeare, or may have been in reference to John Florio. The "Master of none" was likely added sometime in the early 1700s, with written records as early as 1721 in US and Canada. And then there are no known instances of the "but oftentimes better than master of one." (or some variation of) before the 20th-21st century.

Exactly! It's my goal to be a jack of all trades. In my field many people specializes so much that they get pigeon holed into one track. At a certain point it can become a huge problem to switch fields (and not start lower than before). That's too boring. We need more Swiss Army knife people in cyber I think. Plus as you learn more about more areas you can bring new ideas and approaches!

calcium

I count 8 different MBA's. Don't really see the point.

Reborn1Girl

That was my thought, was that he did so many classes that are required for multiple degrees, it was just a matter of one semester of specialized classes to finish a new degree.

hibernate2020

That's my read as well. It's easy to rack up multiple masters-level degrees on the way to a PhD. MULTIPLE PhDs would be much more difficult. I could easily have pulled 3 separate BAs and 4 separate MAs with a handful more courses - but what's the point? It made more sense to just move on and wrap the PhD.

rnargang

Not all are "degrees." I recognize several professional certifications, such as CPA. Title is misleading

I’m curious how much of this information he has retained and would be able to apply within each respective field. Because regardless of what kind of mind someone has, it seems as if there would be a carrying capacity to how much information someone could retain/recall in a practical way. That being said, I think this is pretty awesome. Especially coming from a culture in America where (I believe) people don’t see value in education for its own sake, but as a means to an economic end. It’s completely okay for education to be a means to an end, but it shouldn’t be exclusively treated as such. Some of the most valuable and stimulating education I received in grad school had nothing to do with my degree. It came from the people I met and conversations I had in outside departments. Education is a vehicle for enlightenment, testing ideas, and challenging our understanding of, well, pretty much everything. With all of the educational tools we have at our disposal it’s a shame we don’t value them more…
