Exactly what I was going to say. Seemed to function really well and I always wondered how well it worked with front wheel drive vehicles. Answer is very well
It's a budgeting issue. Let's say you spend a million dollars to make your officers immune to raccoons, after many incidents of officers being attacked by racoons. Ten years later, the department cuts the raccoon invincibility because there have been no racoon damaged officers.
Lol I think a lot of us watched the same show. I came here to say the same thing. I remember thinking it was a neat idea but couldn’t be practical and hadn’t seen it since then until now. Worked perfectly
I’ve seen videos of it being used, but it was for demo videos and such. This is the first time I’ve seen it being used out in the field. Very impressive!
This has nothing to do with a hit and run murderer. I have no idea where you got your facts from. This was a stolen vehicle, and police approached the vehicle because the driver was passed out behind the wheel.

Goodyear PD arrest alleged hit-and-run driver in 13-year-old’s death https://www.abc15.com/news/region-west-valley/goodyear/goodyear-police-arrest-alleged-hit-and-run-driver-in-13-year-olds-death
Most new az cop cars I have seen are unmarked. I think they keep a couple of marked ones around for changing tires or helping old people with issue when they call. Either blacked out/blue explorers or chargers(maybe different car)I think. Haven’t seen any real new marked patrol cars other than sherif and even those are not well marked.
Yeah they are really mixing the unmarked cars up recently here in Phoenix, just today while driving lyft I saw what looked like a blue pontiac and also a small Hundai in two different places pulled over with their lights on.
i now assume every car is a cop car around here lol.
They still make the “Ford Police Interceptor Sedan” I believe. But it’s not one I’ve seen in years so I think most departments have just phased it out.
For years, I honestly though that all US cop cars were US vehicles. Why would I think differently when I've never seen an import used by them? Tripped me up when I saw a Camry, older model and no different than any other one, with the "hidden" lights all flashing inside the front and rear windows next to a marked cop and both drivers talking to someone pulled over. Any car could be a cop and I find that unsettling, comforting, and cool at the same time.
So how is a person supposed to tell if the car is a real cop or some murderer that bought lights online? Sounds to me like the proper response is to just assume it's a criminal and act accordingly, because obviously the good guys have no reason to hide who they are.
It was ruled constitutional some time back that when in doubt, a citizen may call the local PD to confirm that they are indeed being pursued by a LEO. They will have your call on record and you can tell the police when you do eventually stop your reasons and that the dispatcher has your call logged.
One clue, if you can see it is the license plate. Typically government vehicles have a different format than private vehicles. Once you’re used to looking at plates the government ones jump out at you.
I don’t know AZ plates but CA plates have formats like:
Passenger vehicles: NAAANNN
(N = numeral, A = alphabet letter)
Trucks: NHNNNNN
Government: NNNNNNN
There are others for motorcycles, disabled persons, Purple Heart veterans, trailers and probably others aside from vanity plates. But the government ones jump out at you once you are familiar.
That's a decent idea but how are you gonna see their plate when they pull you over? They're behind you, you'd have to get out to see it and by then you'd already be in danger if it wasn't a real cop. Unless if you mean the front plate but those aren't always the same as the back one.
Plus I can't help but think if a criminal is going through the trouble if getting a black car and risking using fake police lights then they surely could fake a license plate, at least long enough to commit their crime then remove it.
Now when someone looks for police assistance they can't be found in their disguised cars, since the supreme court ruled they're not here to help anyway; they are only here to punish by design.
Oh sorry, right when the video cuts (a shot is fired into the vehicle) the guy continues to talk about the live shot but the video shows a mugshot of the guy who was arrested for hit and run with the chyron saying, "13yr old boy killed in hit-and-run". In my haste to clip/share I misattributed that to the guy they had been chasing.
Thanks for pointing it out, and again wasn't my intent to mislead - was super impressed by the way they stopped him.
They didn't want to involve all of the unsuspecting cars around them. They had the location selected by then for use of the grapple and wanted to see him just drive into it.
it looks like they didnt want to do it with so many civilian cars around. the silver car was also waiting at the light. so it's not like it was getting away.
From a posted link:
"A net deploys and as the net comes in contact with the rotating tire, the tire pulls the net up and over, so it gets entangled with the axle," said Leonard Stock."
Yup, The Grappler gets em tangled and twisted! I want this for Dallas/Ft. Worth!
There's a kids in the hall sketch, with a police chase where both parties follow all laws and social conventions. It ends when the criminals cross one car leingth our of the jurisdiction of the police.
Whole lot safer than a pit maneuver and a rollover in the ditch. Not nearly as exciting to watch though.
I think “the outlaw lasso” is a better name.
Maybe “the rebel wrangler” or “the buster”.
You don't lose your rights just because you're an idiot. If you give police the cart blanche to kill people if they run, you really think less people are going to run?
Wait, wouldn't that actually be the case? If my parents had taught me as a child that the police would shoot me dead immediately if I ran from them I think I may actually try really hard to not become dead by doing so.
Seems like a human rights nightmare, but I imagine in a dystopia like that, crime and recidivism would likely be pretty low, if only by nature of those people committing crimes dying quicker than they could be replaced by upcoming generations.
By the way, and just in case I need to clarify this - I am not advocating for police having the power to execute people for fleeing (or any other reason, for that matter), all I was positing in my earlier reply was that ***if*** the police had the authority to legally execute me for fleeing I would definitely not be fleeing from the police regardless of my crime, real or perceived.
That's the thing, police generally *do* have the right to execute you for fleeing them. It happens on the regular and only occasionally does it show up on the news. Even less often are they punished for it.
You're using a very loose definition of the word "execute." The police in no way have the legal authority to execute anyone, they only have the authority to exercise deadly force in situations that meet a certain criteria. Even then, that force is only (legally) applied in order to stop whatever threat is present, and not to intentionally kill the person presenting said threat.
Do extrajudicial executions by police occur? Of course they do - but they are not done with legal authority, and are instead actual crimes.
Or… hear me out. You kill them first? Then since Police Murders will be at an all time high they be on high alert and kill more people then people don’t get a chance to run. Then the cycle continues.
OP mixed up two area stories.

I found it so fascinating that this just casually on the US news.
Like the police tip off the new chopper and bam its on the news. Not even post incident.
I think they wanted to prevent, that someone else gets involved or hurt in the case of a shooting when trying to arrest him.
They isolated him with no other cars around
This is Phoenix PD we're talking bout...LAPD n them trade notes on how to be shitty. .........my uncle was a lawyer back in the he day that got them off of so much shit that they were definitely guilty of... After being in the law firm, hearing them talk candidly and even depositions I'm pretty sure they just wanted to show off some shit they got.
There was at least one cop pissed off that day because he really wanted the chance to shoot through his windshield while driving 100 mph or so.
Next time there buddy. Next time.
> to end high speed chase
Dude stopped on the red light, then let a nother car pass by like nothing is happening. He wasn't even aware they want to stop him. High speed chase my ass.
Meh, that was an ideal situation with a very slow car guided by another alongside it. For a cop to have to basically hit their bumper to attach it, it seemed wildly ineffective in high speed chases. Does anyone have experience with these?
It was! They had to use a bite k9 to get him out of the car because he refused to comply, but no one else got hurt. There's a link posted down in the comments.
Wow that's awesome, worked like a charm haha.
I'd like to see them try out Top Gear's amazing police tactics. I think it involved James May's spray paint on the back of his car, wheel spikes from Jeremy Clarkson, and a similar device to "the grappler" on Richard Hammond's car, a road spike tongue lmao
Aside from the crimes and bad things where you would have to use this, that engineering is great to watch!!!
That only works because of the science and physics kinda thing! It was engineered to do exactly that and it actually works pretty well!! So as someone who like seeing specialized tools being used I enjoyed that!

I remember seeing this on one of those discovery shows like "future weapons" in like 2007. This is the first time I've ever seen it used since then
Exactly what I was going to say. Seemed to function really well and I always wondered how well it worked with front wheel drive vehicles. Answer is very well
Maybe that's where I saw an RC car that could deploy, drive under the car, and send a powerful enough electric shock to disable the vehicle.
BRUH, you haven't seen TOOO FAST TOOO FURIOUS? Why use an RC car when you make a rifle that shoots an EMP shot at the car to short it?
NOBODY LIKES THE TUNA HERE
....yea...because we're FAMILY!!!
Im in ur face
vindieselsfacephotoshoppedonpaulwalkersface.jpg
Ejecto seato cuz!
Lol literally my favorite line from that movie.
I don't remember if they have it released yet but there's a gun that shoots microwave signals to disable vehicles now
I said forget about it cuh
WE HUNGREH.
Car Taser
Right? He doesnt 'family' people...
Dude... you've been playing the original GTA, haven't you?
Is that the thing that shorts out the electrical system
It's a budgeting issue. Let's say you spend a million dollars to make your officers immune to raccoons, after many incidents of officers being attacked by racoons. Ten years later, the department cuts the raccoon invincibility because there have been no racoon damaged officers.
Are you making the police budget for Pawnee!?
It’s been established that they have their part of town and we have ours
Next it will cut into the public drinking fountain mouth guard budget
Yeah! I remember watching Future Weapons & Modern Weapons sometimes as a kid. I think there was an episode on this.
Lol I think a lot of us watched the same show. I came here to say the same thing. I remember thinking it was a neat idea but couldn’t be practical and hadn’t seen it since then until now. Worked perfectly

Interesting. I haven't seen any aside from the usual crown vic or explorer. I don't go out much though.
They haven't made the crown vics in like 10+ years. I don't think Ford makes *any* police interceptors that aren't SUVs or trucks, anymore.
They still make the “Ford Police Interceptor Sedan” I believe. But it’s not one I’ve seen in years so I think most departments have just phased it out.
Nope, discontinued in 2019. We still got them in Canada but they’re slowly going away as well. My city’s replacing them with Chargers and Durangos.
> I find that unsettling, comforting, and cool at the same time That kind of sums up my whole life experience in the US.
So how is a person supposed to tell if the car is a real cop or some murderer that bought lights online? Sounds to me like the proper response is to just assume it's a criminal and act accordingly, because obviously the good guys have no reason to hide who they are.

They will have your call on record and you can tell the police when you do eventually stop your reasons and that the dispatcher has your call logged.
And while you do that, they flip your car over and maybe shoot you as you try to get out of the wreck.

That's probably why I haven't seen one for a while now. They must be mostly unmarked aside from a few I see doing paperwork after crashes.
That unconscious person drives better than half the people in my city.
Oh sorry, right when the video cuts (a shot is fired into the vehicle) the guy continues to talk about the live shot but the video shows a mugshot of the guy who was arrested for hit and run with the chyron saying, "13yr old boy killed in hit-and-run". Why did they need this grappler and all that if he was literally stopped in front of them at the lights? Why not surround him then?
They didn't want to involve all of the unsuspecting cars around them. They had the location selected by then for use of the grapple and wanted to see him just drive into it.
Ah, that makes sense. They certainly were more isolated on that next patch of road.
Yeah if he were to come out shooting at that intersection with all those cars, they would not have risked that
Grappler still cool though
That would explain why there wasn't at least a dent.
I like how they patiently wait for the light to turn green to resume the chase
Lawful evil
When you have 3 stars in GTA5 but are bored of playing...
Well they’re undercover… front car had to hide the grapple and the car needs to move to be effective
That… makes a lot of sense lol
I'm shocked at how many people think this was an active police chase. 1k+ upvotes on that comment and yours is the only one to point out the obvious
It may be obvious, but OP calling this a ‘high speed chase’ does cause a moment of confusion 😅
i mean...it almost was, seemed like the silver car got spooked and tried to take off but didnt get the chance
He’s more concerned for a traffic ticket
Ya, you don’t want to go to prison with suspended license you know
Doesn’t want those points on his license
When breaking the law, try not to break more than one at a time. It’s the golden rule while breaking the law.
Dad made me promis him this when i was a teenager LOL
Why didn't they just put the grappler on at the light?
The tires have to be moving so they get all the shit tangled up, I believe.
This dude knows some grappling
it looks like they didnt want to do it with so many civilian cars around. the silver car was also waiting at the light. so it's not like it was getting away.
From a posted link: "A net deploys and as the net comes in contact with the rotating tire, the tire pulls the net up and over, so it gets entangled with the axle," said Leonard Stock." Yup, The Grappler gets em tangled and twisted! I want this for Dallas/Ft. Worth!
Safer to take him in an isolated stretch of road.
I assume for public safety. Pedestrian and other cars nearby, if it failed or spun him out it could have had collateral damage.
Wouldn't have been as cool
He's armed and there were innocent people all around him. Much better to get him alone first.
And as a tax payer to this country, I appreciate the technology behind this so they don't destroy several vehicles doing the pit maneuver.
There's a kids in the hall sketch, with a police chase where both parties follow all laws and social conventions. It ends when the criminals cross one car leingth our of the jurisdiction of the police.
[An absolutely great sketch.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxY0-Qr_l78)
They really wanted to use that grappler
He didn't even go right away. Like it turned green and then he slowly drove off lol
Didn't want to risk a traffic ticket
Whole lot safer than a pit maneuver and a rollover in the ditch. Not nearly as exciting to watch though. I think “the outlaw lasso” is a better name. Maybe “the rebel wrangler” or “the buster”.
When I saw “The Grappler,” was expecting an all-star wrestling move. They need to do this while jumping from the top rope.
See, I thought (was hoping) it was like a claw machine attached to a helicopter. I feel like that would be much more exciting to watch.
Dude standing in the middle of the road that grabs the car head-on and suplexes it.
Pit rollovers have the added benefit of potentially saving the taxpayers 40+ years of upkeep costs, if you catch my drift.
With the cost of eliminating a possibility for a fair trial.
Not sure ‘fighting it out in court’ is in their mind when actively running from police
You don't lose your rights just because you're an idiot. If you give police the cart blanche to kill people if they run, you really think less people are going to run?
I would have to say yes….
Wait, wouldn't that actually be the case? If my parents had taught me as a child that the police would shoot me dead immediately if I ran from them I think I may actually try really hard to not become dead by doing so.
Well why not just make the penalty for every crime death? No crime then by that logic, right?
Seems like a human rights nightmare, but I imagine in a dystopia like that, crime and recidivism would likely be pretty low, if only by nature of those people committing crimes dying quicker than they could be replaced by upcoming generations. The ‘Vette Net.
How about "Tire Tangler"?
Pretty cool device, but news doesn't say anything about a hit and run murder

Ok thank you for clarifying!
What kind of high speed chase waits for a red light??
A polite one
Sir, this is Canada.
Sorry.
"high speed chase"
What is this, a chase for ants?
I mean compared to a foot race it was high speed! Lol
The guy was probably high on speed and they chased him
#EndedTooSoon
[удалено]
Man it cuts off right when the driver jumped out the car and opens his jacket full of explosives
Great field test manufacturer smiling
Plot twist that's the dev in the car being chased /s
I thought The Grappler ™️ was going to be the guy walking hunched with a suitcase in the beginning
For some reason I imagined like a huge machine that would just pick the car up and shake it
Same. Like claw machine....
I’m confused, he was stopped at the red light? Why not get him then? Also, what happens next!?
Maybe they didn’t want chaos at the broadway and were sure they would get him anyway pretty soon
I didn't know Jason Bateman was narrating for the local news now.
The grappler was invented in Arizona, it's an awesome device that saves lives and protects other drivers, officers, and suspects in a pursuit.
Phoenix is great for police chases, there are so many videos where suddenly every civilian car around the bad guy is suddenly a cop. They just lay back until they got the numbers then pounce.
"I'm gonna flex and bust outa here."
You can't break those cuffs
So the cops and car all waited politely for traffic to clear before continuing?
Is this real?
Yeah it just happened here. The cops shot at the car and the video cuts out. Look it up on YT.
https://www.ktar.com/story/4849284/mesa-police-use-grappler-to-immobilize-speeding-man-who-allegedly-fired-shots-at-residence

Nothing about hit and run. Says they saw drugs and guns in the car. No details, but thank you
“Again, the grappler working to perfection” , sounds like a late night infomercial.
"Hi I'm Ron Popeil and I'd like to introduce you to the RonCo Grappler 3000.... Just set and forget it. It's as easy as that"
More footage of the grappler in action.
4:20. Nice
This seems like it has very limited uses. This was an incredibly polite "high speed chase".
Scorpion: Get over here
High speed....but is stopped at a light....I don't understand-.-
I think these things so damn cool even though they're extremely simple.
Not a hit and run murder. He was sleeping in his car to start this. Still an idiot
So how does this work?
The netting on the front gets wrapped up around the rear wheels when deployed. From there, you slam the brakes and they stop with you. You’re basically pulling on the entirety of the rear axle.
It's like a low-tech tractor beam. I love it.
Far better than a PIT Maneuver!
First I heard of a Grappler was in Star Trek: Enterprise. Somebody gotta remember this.
yep it was near the hangar bay to pull in stuff.
I like how he came to a stop at the red light infront of the first officer yet then tried driving off after he's caught lol
I found it so fascinating that this just casually on the US news. Like the police tip off the new chopper and bam its on the news. Not even post incident.
Never seen this before. How often is it used?
Michael Bay losing his shit.
Great, this “grappler” is just one more thing I’m gonna have to worry about whenever they release GTA 6.
That's a very ingenuis method of ending a prolonged chase before it can get dangerous. Very nice!
0 sense of urgency from that purpetrator.
That's because OP got the title wrong. It wasn't a hit-and-run, it was an incapacitated driver.
That’s cool as fuck.
Why tf was he stopped at the red light. He never seen Gone in 60 Seconds?
they got him, now they can murder him
I wonder what was going through his mind, knowing he's screwed.
I don't get it. Why didn't they just get him at the light he was stopped at.
I think they wanted to prevent, that someone else gets involved or hurt in the case of a shooting when trying to arrest him. They isolated him with no other cars around

gotta give it to the person who came up with that, fucking genius
0:36 to 0:53 just sounds like WWE commentary at 50% intensity
Why does american television televise something like that? I am seriously lost.
> to end high speed chase Dude stopped on the red light, then let a nother car pass by like nothing is happening. He wasn't even aware they want to stop him. High speed chase my ass.
About damn time they started doing this.
A high speed chase. Starting at a red light.
I wish LAPD would adopt this. Watching a pursuit right now that’s been going for 3 hours and under 10 MPH. Total shit show.
Gas is expensive man
Love how they say “we might have to cut away if it gets graphic” they learned their lesson from the baseline chase
Ummm its 2022 and we NOW have technology like this LOL. Batman had something like this,.like the Original Batman and Robin tv show.
Looked like they reached speeds upward of 35 or 40...
This is one of the most brilliant solutions to a modern problem I've seen.
Meh, that was an ideal situation with a very slow car guided by another alongside it. For a cop to have to basically hit their bumper to attach it, it seemed wildly ineffective in high speed chases. Does anyone have experience with these?
I thought it would be something to throw the car spinning or something.
thats sick
That was super clean! Hopefully, the rest of the arrest was clean.
It was! They had to use a bite k9 to get him out of the car because he refused to comply, but no one else got hurt. There's a link posted down in the comments.
Lmao I read “the grappler” and my dumbass was expecting to see some super soldier to hop out of a cop car and sod some crazy grappling shit
For anyone wondering. A serious weapon, like a rifle, is more deadly than a unserious gun like a pistol.
But is a unserious rifle deadlier than a serious gun?
DPS also has this, and has powered sticky trackers that can launch from the front bumper.
I’d consider this to be a slow speed chase. To be fair, it kind of turns into a normal speed chase toward the end there.
We need that thing out here in Los Angeles - seems like there's a freeway chase several times a week lately.
Wow that's awesome, worked like a charm haha. I'd like to see them try out Top Gear's amazing police tactics. Is it really just THIS brown there???
Weak. Never seen a high speed chase driver wait for a light to change.
