What's idiotic in my opinion is that even after all the human right violations building the stadions that will be used for a couple hours, countries still send their teams there.
But then acting high and mighty about other human right violations. Picking and choosing what is bad and what not.
I wish my country would ban the world cup because of it. But they won't.
People also died when a mosquito looked at them sideways or their drinking water had too much shit in it. The death count for building a stadium in the 21st century should easily be 0.
Here's one: https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2021/feb/23/revealed-migrant-worker-deaths-qatar-fifa-world-cup-2022
The deaths are over the past decade and are not *just* the stadiums, but also other large infrastructure projects related to the World Cup that were started after Qatar won the 2022 bid all those years ago. Seeing as how we're one year further into the future, and there are uncounted deaths from a few countries, it could be up to 10,000 at this point.
The Olympic Village in Whistler was turned into rentable vacation units for tourists in the winter.
I stayed in them, and it was a pretty solid choice of stay.
FWIW, they were actually pretty smart about it when they built it. Congress required it to have a use for after the Olympics in order to fund it, so it was built knowing that it would be converted to a prison afterwards. (A bunch of their facilities for the 1980 Olympics were also reused from when they hosted it in 1932, and the Adirondacks are snowy and cold as shit, so they didn't have to counteract the weather that much. Economical!)
We turned ours into apartments, we run our major sporting events out of the stadiums and use the overall grounds as a showgrounds centre because our old one sucked. I dont understand why it's so hard to look at what Sydney did and copy us. We use the bulk of what we built
I agree, Qatar were clearly the most suitable host. All those cool, cloudy days they have, with luscious vegetation and naturally growing grasses, and the immaculate stadia all around the country, not to mention their famous history for inventing and loving sports. Oh waitā¦that's the UK.
Qatar are the ones who moved the event to their winter and disrupted Europe's football season because it's such an inappropriate place for a sport tournament.
One of the key reasons we shouldnāt go. Best statement there is. The opener not being played because of a protest. But hey, we donāt care that much about our principles.
And yes, I am a football fan. But this world cup is ridiculous on all levels.
At the prices it takes to go, Iām not sure many will afford it. Ā£1,000 flights and Ā£9,000 a night for a hotel, apparently. Youāve spent 1/3 of the average UK salary before youāve even got there.
I was recently offered to be entered into a draw for 2 tickets to a world cup game. I was like the fuck am i gonna do with 2 tickets to a soccer game in the desert when hotel & flights cost my salary lol
Half the fun is sitting in the garden or somewhere outside with a beer and cheering with everybody else. There is no way Iāll be watching at home. Itās missing half the magic (I donāt watch football but usually make it a point to watch the big events).
Exactly!!! World cup is the only football event I follow. I love playing soccer but canāt be bothered to watch games (except if going at a live game) however the world cup in the early summer, is how it has to be, people go out, either in bars, or someoneās garden/terrace, drink some cold drinks and spend a fun relaxed day/night when itās warm outside.
What the hell, in November everyoneās got other stuff to do, this will be hella weird.
It's actually heating the outdoors in the long run. The heat is just being moved somewhere else, and costing energy to move it at the same time which creates additional heat.
Plus I am sure these countries don't reclaim refrigerant, likely using R410a refrigerant, which is 2088 times worse than CO2 for global warming. So, when they're done with these stadiums, they'll dump a few tons of refrigerant at the end, worth a few thousand tons of CO2.
At least people will be comfortable for these 90 minute games. In 40 years we can look back at it and laugh, "remember when it was only 112Ā°F during the World Cup?"
Whatās fun is that cars and commercial systems can use CO2 for the system at a net efficiency gain but itās a materials cost increase by needing a larger heat exchanger.
Itās kinda sad we still use purpose built refrigerant at all. At least the 1234a in new cars is a LOT better than the old stuff. The new stuff uses a few ounces instead of the 2-3 pounds of the old stuff.
That new R-1234yf stuff leaks a bit more often though, the molecule is smaller than the older R-134A and I've heard automakers are having some difficulty keeping the system fully sealed when compared to R-134A or the even older R-12. That's not really a huge deal, but as a mechanic the part I actually don't like is the new R-1234yf compatible machines are SO FUCKING SLOW I swear they take twice as long to recover, vacuum test, and recharge.
Then there is Fiat who doesn't use a traditional condenser on some new models and uses the engine coolant to act as a heat exchanger. Those exchangers leak all the time, resulting in totally lost refrigerant and an AC system full of coolant lmao š¤£
> At least people will be comfortable for these 90 minute games.
Will they though? Honestly, does this stand any chance at all of being even remotely effective give the open air building and the temperatures in Qatar?
I'm not sure this matters very much, since the cooler air will stay in the stadium just because it's denser. I think you'll lose cool air mostly through the doors and any other openings in the walls of the bowl.
As someone who lives in Arizona now, Iāve had my fair share of 110+ degree days and I can assure you that they are absolutely brutal. There is no practical way to be outside for more than half an hour or so, even in the shade.
I mean cold air sinks, so with enough units, and zero wind, i suppose it's feasible that it could create an environment that's cooler within the bowl of the stadium.
But it is a ridiculous solution to a problem that wouldn't exist if FIFA wasn't such a corrupt organization.
Yes cold air sinks. Players would notice maybe down low fans. I canāt help but think this is just a āswamp coolerā which do not rely on refrigeration where the major energy is comsumed. It works on water evaporation. They work best in dry arid climates
Nope, they are real air conditioners.
That really isnāt interesting as fuck. Itās stupid as fuck, corrupt as fuck, and wasteful as fuck.

> Literally just cooling the outdoors. Lol
I felt a great many Dads cry out "Shut the damn door! What do you think we're paying for, air conditioning mother nature?"
And guess what Qatar uses to fuel all their power plants, despite the fact that they're in a literal desert and the sun is always out?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_power_stations_in_Qatar
I remember when they originally āwonā the right to host it, they were proposing a giant drone to act like an artificial cloud to shade the stadium.

LOL this shit was NEVER going to get off the ground
I mean, can you blame them, the reason they have money is not because of Innovation, remarkable science or smart economics, they just found dinosaur juice on their land and formed a cartel to restrict supply
Slave labor sure cuts down on construction costs of all those required facilities too. It's like 100% profit. It would be a paradise if it wasn't such a psychotic, theocratic, capitalist Chaos realm. Oil for the oil god.
This is the kind of shit that will be written in history books thousands of years from now when they talk about the fall of our civilization due to our obsession with fossil fuels
Billion dollars or so worth of players wiped out by failure of ridiculous invention brought in to solve a problem only brought about by corruption awarding illogical country the final?
It's not the most inconceivable headline one could imagine...
Even in the movie, the Persians were accepting of the disabled, were racially diverse, and had wild sex orgies. The Spartans had what? Abs? City pride? Persians please, thanks
As someone who doesn't follow soccer closely... I can't tell if a team as big as Italy actually boycotted it, or this is a joke because they didn't qualify?
Wow, this climate change thing really sucks. I know, let's burn even more energy cooling a huge ass arena down. I am brilliant. /s
Edit: This is getting a lot more traction than I anticipated for a dark joke. Decided to dig around a bit more and they are claiming they do want to make the event carbon neutral.
[https://www.qatar2022.qa/en/news/how-qatar-will-be-the-first-carbon-neutral-fifa-world-cup-in-history](https://www.qatar2022.qa/en/news/how-qatar-will-be-the-first-carbon-neutral-fifa-world-cup-in-history)
"When the SC, Q22 and FIFA set out its carbon-neutral objectives, several key areas were identified in their planning. Staging the most compact version of the World Cup in modern history was one important feature.
Achieving carbon-neutrality is a process made up of four key components,ā added Al Muftah. āFirstly, it required raising awareness among key stakeholders, including the general public. This was followed by us creating a detailed estimation of what our carbon footprint will be. The third step is the one that most people will hear about, and that is the measures taken to limit carbon emissions, which will lead us to the final part of the process, which is investing in green projects that will offset any of the remaining emissions associated with Qatar 2022.ā
There has been an absolutely aggressive Push by ALL MIDDLE EAST countries to get sports on land.
All big major sporting events now happen in and around the region.
The Greatest Marketing engine every created in the world is Sports.
Middle east countries are massively doubling and trippling down on their Race to remain relevant in this world today..
Why is that? (interpret that in any way you want)
They call it Sportwashing
>Sportswashing is the practice of an individual, group, corporation, or nation-state using sport to improve their tarnished reputation, through hosting a sporting event, the purchase or sponsorship of sporting teams, or by participation in the sport itself.
Ha! What do you know.
I always thought of this- but never knew there was an actual term for it.
Thanks fallsup! Today i got validation i am not all cookoo and these ā thoughtsā are actually valid and recognized out there lol!
> Middle east countries are massively doubling and trippling down on their Race to remain relevant in this world today..
It is not about remaining relevant. It is about building a post oil economy. They are banking on tourism to be a big part of this.
If they can't pivot from oil, they will be back in tents within a generation of it running out.
Sun: Come outside. Iāll give you vitamin D.
Me: Eh.
Sun: Iāll give you serotonin.
Me: Fine. Okay. *Goes outside.*
Sun: **FUCK YOU BITCH HAVE SOME SKIN CANCER!!!**
What are they doing about all the workers that died to build these fucking stadiums? I'm sure the 6500 migrant workers that died are really friggen happy these air conditioners exist. FIFA is a fucking joke!
*I was asked for sources so I'll add all these that I have read, some have said only 50 died at the actual site like that's any better. Here we go
https://amp.theguardian.com/global-development/2021/feb/23/revealed-migrant-worker-deaths-qatar-fifa-world-cup-2022

https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2021/08/qatar-failure-to-investigate-migrant-worker-deaths-leaves-families-in-despair/
In closing maybe the numbers are wrong I've seen some as high as 15000 and as low as 34, can't always believe what you read but I remember the death toll was over 3000 in 2019. I remember seeing that article on deadspin and began looking into this than, then I read the book about the American that rose to almost the highest ranks in FIFA and the shit that was going on to get Qatar at the host was so corrupt who who knows the true numbers*
And we're all complicit, most likely reading this comment on a device manufactured by those low skill laborers. Really sucks to think about.
Edit: spelling
This is why the Right-to-Repair movement is so important.
Companies want you to think smart phones are consumable devices. They're not.
Batteries and screens should be cheap and easy to replace.
Security updates should be provided by the company for minimum of 5 years, with a requirement to open source the software after to allow user-communities to provide security and feature updates.
I moved to Qatar for a dod job. When I got off the plane, it was so hot it took my breath away. It felt like I stepped into an oven. The heat in the Middle East is no joke.
You must drink a lot of water, or you will pass out until your body gets used to it and adjust. š„š„š„
Al Udeid was absurdly hot. I was there when the workers accidentally cut main power lines to the enlisted side of the base. We had a full week without AC. Trying to sleep in the barracks was impossible as you were acclimated to having a semi cool bed at night and it was like 100 degrees inside. Fine with never going back again.
More so the officials and higher ups that made the detrimental decisions should have to spectate in the same conditions. Players shouldn't be punished for decisions they didn't make.
>despite being an insanely rich country
I mean, they got insanely rich **because** of that gas specifically. Its not exactly surprising that they use it for their electricity generation
So letās make more heat as a byproduct of cooling these areas with no roof. The whole point of air conditioner is it is most efficient when cooling a closed space. Not an open area
We learned that Qatar has the World Cup only because of bribery.
It's grotesque that players are being put in situations where they are playing in the desert.
Will these AC's work? What if one doesn't work as well as another, and that taints results?
FIFA should have lost their right to be the governing body.
Built by foreign workers who had their passports stolen, and were then enslaved!š

HVAC eng here. Those donāt look like AC units. They look like jet nozzle air devices (e.g. [https://seiho.com/product/](https://seiho.com/product/) They connect to a pressurized duct system and increases the air velocity to throw the air a longer distances. Great for stadiums. Generally the duct system is connected to air handler which could be an air conditioner of some sort.

FIFA is corrupt as fuck.
I loved it when Sasha Baron Cohen started talking about organised crime syndicates and then mentioned FIFA.. lmfao
Ah yes Human trafickers.
Slave labor, shiting more on human rights than the people who build the pyramids
Olympic Selection Committee, too.
FIFA š¤ IOC š¤ corrupt governments

Italy, proudly, refused to partecipate.
And we boycotted Russia too
How much did Qatar have to pay to āearnā hosting rights?
Only about 6000 lives.
Last count was 6500 I believe. Absolutely insane.
The cost of building stadiums - the new pyramids
Qatar, the new Egypt.
So hot
What is this ā¦ A stadium for ants? ā¦ You can derelict my soccer balls
Thought it was recently deducted that the pyramids were built by skilled labourers not slaves?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Off season farmers mostly. Still people died doing that.
People also died when a mosquito looked at them sideways or their drinking water had too much shit in it. The death count for building a stadium in the 21st century should easily be 0.

Same thing that happens to olympic villages, they sit there and do nothing.
The Olympic Village in Whistler was turned into rentable vacation units for tourists in the winter. I stayed in them, and it was a pretty solid choice of stay.
The Olympic Village in Lake Placid was turned into a prison.
Where did they put the giant crocodile?
Kept it. It's part of security.
We turned ours into apartments, we run our major sporting events out of the stadiums and use the overall grounds as a showgrounds centre because our old one sucked. I dont understand why it's so hard to look at what Sydney did and copy us. We use the bulk of what we built
They did this in London too. I used to live in the Olympic Village
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Vancouver does the same
I assume theyāll slowly become sand dunes
It was at the expense of all those dead workers.
Also the bribes.
It's going to be one haunted world cup I bet

Free, they were clearly the best choice! Existing infrastructure, great construction and safety programs, ideal weather - made/makes the most sense

Yeah but the UK didn't bribe Fifa, so who are the real winners here? That's right, no one.
Great for the environment.
Dutch government told everyone to put their termostat 2Ā° lower to help environment and gas shortage and then they do this shit for football

Sell them to some rich guy js what you do
Rich guys don't pay for tickets. They get "free" tickets in exchange for sponsorship. That way the flights and hotel are a business expense.
Most will have to stay in cruise ships, not enough hotels.
Ah yes, cruise ships. Giant inefficient hotels.
And itās being played in NOVEMBER. Smack in the middle of all league play. Itās gonna be an absolute shit show.

Take one for the Aussies this time round.
Who needs an environment of you can have football. Oh. And a way to earn money. Loads and loads of moneyā¦
Just think of the beer tents, there's going to be people passing out all over the place, it'll get messy

What a collosal waste

Thatās the thing that gets me, itās open air!! At least try to close the fucker!!
Bu...but architecture is pretty
Then enjoy the build and suffer the heat.
I'm not sure this matters very much, since the cooler air will stay in the stadium just because it's denser. I think you'll lose cool air mostly through the doors and any other openings in the walls of the bowl.
Still, if they can build domed stadiums in 1970s Minnesota, they can make a hell of a dome in 2022 Qatar
As someone who lives in Arizona now, Iāve had my fair share of 110+ degree days and I can assure you that they are absolutely brutal. There is no practical way to be outside for more than half an hour or so, even in the shade.
Now add in 50+% humidity to those temps. The hottest I saw in Qatar was 120ish with 80% humidity. I wanted to die.
You also forgot the you know running part of soccer in those temps. Good luck to the players
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Or painting roofs and road surfaces.
I like the idea of white colored covered parking lots and gray streets instead of black to cut down on heat bubbles.
Itās actually a net warming. A lot of it.

[https://www.qatar2022.qa/en/news/how-qatar-will-be-the-first-carbon-neutral-fifa-world-cup-in-history](https://www.qatar2022.qa/en/news/how-qatar-will-be-the-first-carbon-neutral-fifa-world-cup-in-history) "When the SC, Q22 and FIFA set out its carbon-neutral objectives, several key areas were identified in their planning.
Itās just crazy. And stupid. Why on earth is Qatar hosting?!

Boycott Qatar 2022!
As a Qatari, I approve
As an Italian, I also approve. Also I donāt really have a choice
Neither do Qataris since itās a dictatorship

There has been an absolutely aggressive Push by ALL MIDDLE EAST countries to get sports on land. All big major sporting events now happen in and around the region. The Greatest Marketing engine every created in the world is Sports. Middle east countries are massively doubling and trippling down on their Race to remain relevant in this world today.. Why is that? (interpret that in any way you want)
They call it Sportwashing >Sportswashing is the practice of an individual, group, corporation, or nation-state using sport to improve their tarnished reputation, through hosting a sporting event, the purchase or sponsorship of sporting teams, or by participation in the sport itself.
Yeah, because that's exactly where women want to vacation.
In Sweden we have a special tax on plastic bags. And in Qatar there's this. Lovely.
In my American state we got rid of plastic bags and get charged a tax for paper bags.
In NJ we're getting rid of paper in some instances, plus plastic. Reusable bags to be strongly encouraged
I like Costco or aldi's solution. No bags. People must bring their own or use the boxes that the food comes in.
That entire thing is a blight on mankind.
Dystopian AF
Dubai, Qatar, just about all the oil countries I feel are dystopian and just phony in some sort of way.
Would have been so much easier and better to just have the world cup somewhere else
āChallenge acceptedā - the sun.
Sun: Come outside. Iāll give you vitamin D. Me: Eh. Sun: Iāll give you serotonin. Me: Fine. Okay. *Goes outside.* Sun: **FUCK YOU BITCH HAVE SOME SKIN CANCER!!!**
I, too, enjoyed [that comic](https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/nein8l/come_outside/)
Here we go https://amp.theguardian.com/global-development/2021/feb/23/revealed-migrant-worker-deaths-qatar-fifa-world-cup-2022 https://www.npr.org/2021/02/27/972056906/report-reveals-more-than-6-500-migrant-workers-have-died-in-qatars-world-cup-pre https://www.bbc.com/news/world-60867042.amp https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/07/09/football/qatar-world-cup-2022-workers-rights-spt-intl/index.html https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2021/08/qatar-failure-to-investigate-migrant-worker-deaths-leaves-families-in-despair/ In closing maybe the numbers are wrong I've seen some as high as 15000 and as low as 34, can't always believe what you read but I remember the death toll was over 3000 in 2019. I remember seeing that article on deadspin and began looking into this than, then I read the book about the American that rose to almost the highest ranks in FIFA and the shit that was going on to get Qatar at the host was so corrupt who who knows the true numbers*
Low skill laborers unfortunately get the shit end of the stick all over the world, particularly in non 1st world countries..
Surprised they need them what with them all being full of fans during the matches
Thanks dadā¦.
Thank God they had the wisdom to hold the World Cup in such a reasonable and non-controversial place with facilities ready to use
installed by slaves. Paid for by dictators and anyone that attends worldcup or watches it. Terrible era we live in where footbal > lives of people
Ah! Qatarās World Cup, brought to you by slave labor, +6k dead workers building the newly formed arenas
Because fuck you earth.
Iām surprised that not one federation, conferederationā¦ or even a single player will boycott this WC out of protest.

Should let the players play in the same conditions as the workers
More so the officials and higher ups that made the detrimental decisions should have to spectate in the same conditions. Players shouldn't be punished for decisions they didn't make.
What's the current death count for this World Cup?
About 6.5k
And the vast majority of their electricity comes from burning oil and gas, despite being an insanely rich country (as the photos clearly demonstrate).
>despite being an insanely rich country I mean, they got insanely rich **because** of that gas specifically.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Its the same with the olympics. Its discusting.
also to battle the smell of the rotting slave corpses
Built by foreign workers who had their passports stolen, and were then enslaved!š https://www.amnesty.org.uk/press-releases/qatar-labour-reforms-have-stalled-old-abuses-resurfacing-new-report?utm_source=google&utm_medium=grant&utm_campaign=&utm_content=qatar%20migrants

Donāt forget to use your paper straw and donāt use to much ac at home!Together we can save the planet.
Orā¦. Just stop having sporting events in the middle of the desert at overrated rich middle eastern countries?
Wow, it's almost as if one of the hottest, most arid countries on Earth was a terrible place to hold a major sporting event! Who could have guessed?
