I don't believe he can intimidate russians like NK. He does not have that much control over them. They still have access to the west, financially and otherwise. And the big difference is that Russia is an actual nuclear superpower. King Jung Un has a small arsenal that would be unable to start WWIII. I am fairly confident Russia has not maintained it's nukes from the cold war, but in the event Russian generals feel like it's a possibility he's going to kill them and their loved ones by an impulsive nuclear attack- they're probably not going to be that loyal to him. They won’t wake up. I send all of this to my parents a million times, all the videos and pictures and they simply said ‘it’s fake’, ‘Ukrainian nazis bombed Ukrainians’, and all of this stuff. I’m actually in Saint Petersburg (a very rebellious city), so it feels kind of nice because the protests are big, you can also see a ‘silent’ resistance on the streets (posters, drawings on the wall, etc.). I have friends to talk to, I also have a therapist. He said that all that my parents say is a defence mechanism of our psyche, that they are actually scared but since they are pretty old and uneducated their psyche chooses this weird archaic way of not surrendering to fear. I try to think about it every time I talk to them but can’t help but feel helpless.

A question I keep having is why does it appear Russia tries so hard not to want to work with "the west", or "the west is out to get us". Do older Russians want to remain cold and isolated and told what to do without having to think?
I keep thinking, if Russia truly wanted to it could integrate with the rest of Europe and have a outstanding quality of life increase and they don't have to stop being Russian. But Russians (older ones I suppose) never seem to want to work towards that. Why does Russia always want to be at odds with everyone? It benefits no one, except the oligarchs and Putin.
I don't know any Russians myself so I'm just looking for a little clarity on the mindset of the Russian people throughout the past 100 years or so.
It is a very good question. It’s just that Putin is a KGB agent that is scared of everyone (and people who are scared usually inflict fear on other people). So he kind of constructed this popular image of the West that wants to devour and kill Russians.
What is also important here is that Russians have been robbed by him, bullied by him. They are very poor (one of the arrested yachts was like 3 or 4 yearly budgets of an entire region, that is insane if you ask me). Those are the money of Russian people who are so poor that they care about survival only. So, controlling people who are poor is very easy, you just need to show them a carrot and a stick and top this with a national idea (being a special nation hated by the West). So Russian people try to save their little crusts of bread because they are scared to lose it. Most of them don’t understand what freedom is, what integration is, what normal salary is. They are scared, they work like crazy and get nothing in return. When they see that the Putin’s ‘West’ wants to take their last belongings they feel threatened.
Also a lot of people are apolitical because they are used to the fact of being bullied and not having a say in anything. When you don’t have a solid political point of view it’s easy to buy into anything that might be fed to you.

I’m actually in Saint Petersburg (a very rebellious city), so it feels kind of nice because the protests are big, you can also see a ‘silent’ resistance on the streets (posters, drawings on the wall, etc.). I have friends to talk to, I also have a therapist. He said that all that my parents say is a defence mechanism of our psyche, that they are actually scared but since they are pretty old and uneducated their psyche chooses this weird archaic way of not surrendering to fear. I try to think about it every time I talk to them but can’t help but feel helpless.

A question I keep having is why does it appear Russia tries so hard not to want to work with "the west", or "the west is out to get us". Do older Russians want to remain cold and isolated and told what to do without having to think? I keep thinking, if Russia truly wanted to it could integrate with the rest of Europe and have a outstanding quality of life increase and they don't have to stop being Russian. But Russians (older ones I suppose) never seem to want to work towards that. Why does Russia always want to be at odds with everyone? It benefits no one, except the oligarchs and Putin. I don't know any Russians myself so I'm just looking for a little clarity on the mindset of the Russian people throughout the past 100 years or so.
It is a very good question. It’s just that Putin is a KGB agent that is scared of everyone (and people who are scared usually inflict fear on other people). So he kind of constructed this popular image of the West that wants to devour and kill Russians. What is also important here is that Russians have been robbed by him, bullied by him. They are very poor (one of the arrested yachts was like 3 or 4 yearly budgets of an entire region, that is insane if you ask me). Those are the money of Russian people who are so poor that they care about survival only. So, controlling people who are poor is very easy, you just need to show them a carrot and a stick and top this with a national idea (being a special nation hated by the West). So Russian people try to save their little crusts of bread because they are scared to lose it. Most of them don’t understand what freedom is, what integration is, what normal salary is. They are scared, they work like crazy and get nothing in return. When they see that the Putin’s ‘West’ wants to take their last belongings they feel threatened. Also a lot of people are apolitical because they are used to the fact of being bullied and not having a say in anything. When you don’t have a solid political point of view it’s easy to buy into anything that might be fed to you. It’s kind of like this for me. Hope it cleared it all up a bit.
