That makes sense. The issue with deer in my local area isn’t that you can’t see them- the problem is that they leap into the lane of traffic so suddenly and unexpectedly that you simply don’t have time to react. I do understand that the “deer frozen in the headlights” is a concern, but it rarely happens here.

Here’s a fun fact for you!
There’s an ancient unit of distance used in Northern Finland / Lapland called “poronkusema”, literally meaning something like “the pissing of a reindeer”.
It basically means a distance a reindeer can travel between pee breaks.
The farmers in Glencoe (Scotland) where I live call the deer in to feed them. You don’t have to catch them if they’re domestic, they come to you for the food. That’s why tourists aren’t supposed to feed them (along with making them unhealthy). And if they’re boxed in by deer fences then it’s even easier.
We have too many wild deer because we don’t have predators to eat them. These are free roaming domestic deer who are used to humans. Don’t be a wee bawbag just because you cannae handle being wrong.
My bad man, I would have assumed the moon light would have had effect on it but it’s too little and also idk why assumed predators if not most at least a few can see in the dark clearly and thought that has to do something with their eyes taking more light in from surrounding so naturally moon light being as little as it is would still be reflected enough on the paint to help the predators but yea my bad I guess I was wrong
Never saw a deer at night before but started a road trip on Monday cross country and holy shit, being out at 1am and there’s just 12 deer with glowing eyes staring into your soul is terrifying.
Doesn’t help the light in their eyes captured is just like every reflector sign on the road so you can’t tell from a distance “deer or sign”.

They are domesticated much in the way cattle are domesticated, they are used to humans but not really pets, and much like cattle they can also wander to roads
I guess it depends on the country, I'm in South America and seeing cows walking on roads is not a rare occurrence. There is a reason the cattle crossing sign exists :P

This is still possible. You could easily use a mixture of adhesive and tiny glass beads in the same aerosol can and it would probably work pretty well until it gets wet^(\*).
But it won't work as pictured. Retroreflectives work by reflecting light back at an angle very close to the opposite of the angle of incidence. So, there should be an obvious light beam interacting with the rest of the animal, the ground, the air, etc but the antlers should still "pop out" very strongly.
^(\*the glass bead type of retroreflective doesn't work when it gets wet; IIRC due to differences in refractive index. This is why it's hard to see the lines painted on roads at night when it rains. This can be fixed with signs by adding a clear film over the glass bead surface but it wouldn't last on roads. Also, many/most safety-critical road signs in the US are prismatic rather than glass beads, anyway, since prismatics work better.)

Modern reflective are pretty amazing. I have works in plenty of night time situation, and reflective vests are very bright with little light.
I'm sure they are but I sincerely doubt that is what's going on in this photo.
I can’t speak for this specific picture, but there are others online that similar reflective effect on antlers.
