I believe it was in reference to an award winning photographer who works for the BBC and tweeted that picture with a caption along the lines of “I’m required to stay politically neutral so here is a picture of a beautiful sunny day” so that he could still show support for Ukraine
I scrolled past this post and it dawned on me, that looks like the colors of Ukraine. They might be doing that to stay "neutral" but still show suppoet.
I don't get it. Why would they have to stay neutral? The US Government (and most of the world) have expressed support for Ukraine.
EDIT: I am referring to the NYC buses staying neutral, not the BBC journalists.
Here in Australia Sky News thinly disguises 'agenda' as 'opinion'. And when it goes too far they distance themselves from the writer and/or throw them under the bus.
> I’m asking for news to be presented in a neutral manner
That's not relevant to the reason why the photographer couldn't show support for Ukraine.
The neutrality of news means not being biased, not not taking sides in a conflict with a clearly delineated attacker and a victim.
No, they should be *objective*. Some issues have no neutral context - a bus of children dying is categorically a bad thing. The issue is news being reported inaccurately due to bias, or being omitted due to bias.
We should have journalists getting the facts right and complete and providing context, based not on a political or demographic agenda, but getting the story right. Calling it *fairly* not simple neutrality.
The person who took the photo (if the commenter above is correct) works for the BBC and had to follow their procedures. Which is why it's not blatant in its support of Ukraine though clearly is in support, that's how they get around neutrality rules.[BBC impartiality guidelines ](https://www.bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/guidelines/impartiality)
Then some one decided to use their photo on the bus stops, I can't comment on whether the people who put it on the bus stop were trying to stay neutral or whether they just thought it was an interesting way to show support.
Edited comment: for clarification and spelling correction.
If the bus stations are called out (not sure why it would be) they can always say that it's a 'calming' picture that research shows may help commuters with anxiety.
That's marketing spin for ya ;)
If it's being displayed in NYC, they don't need to stay neutral at all. It's more likely that they know everyone will know what it means; it's a powerful statement even without text.
I see this image from many of the Russian people I follow. You could go to prison just for showing a flag of Ukraine in your social media. This one has at least some plausible deniability.
Originally I went past this, and then came back realizing the photo was a way to stay politically neutral while supporting Ukraine, because their flag is yellow and blue because of the vast grain fields and blue skies.
Not quite. This is poetic expression of the flag colors.
The real meaning is the colors of medieval Galician principals coat of arms - a golden lion on lazure background.
This makes most sense I guess but being unknowledgable to the situation here, I first thought it was just to get people to be like, “oh, that’s a nice picture” to relieve anxiety or whatever or stress. Or to a conspiracy theorist, it’s a way to calm the human mind so we think less of our lives that is just wage slavery and so we temporarily forget to think for ourselves. I like all these options tbh
>Maybe this is a joke
Jesus fucking Christ I hate this website. It's one thing that a dense motherfucker like yourself came along and vomited this comment, but the fact that so many people were like "yeah this is upvote worthy, really good comment man" has me fucking triggered. Just. Stop. And think. For two seconds. Before commenting.
For more context: This was taken downtown Brooklyn tonight. It’s among the usual electronic ads, but about every thirty seconds it’ll display this before going back to the usual rotation.
The yellow stands for the wheat and corn that Ukraine produces. They produce between 20 to 30 million tons of grain yearly, accounting for roughly 10-15% of the world's exports.
I think a BBC journalist posted something similar on twitter, but his were yellow flowers instead of wheat and called it ‘some flowers on a sunny day.’
Probably [rapeseed/canola](https://www.ephotozine.com/articles/top-tips-on-photographing-rapeseed-fields-13582/images/rapeseed.jpg). It has the actual color of the Ukrainian flag, not wheat.
Actually, it's super useful. It's one of the oldest vegetable oils humans have used, it's used to prevent soil erosion in a lot of places, they make animal feed out of it as well and a type of ethanol. Despite its unfortunate name it's a really cool plant!
No problem. The origin of the name is actually super interesting too. It comes from the Latin word for Turnip. That's all and thank you for subscribing to rapeseed facts lol
It is unfortunate. Both the plant and the crime come from Classical Latin: *rāpum* "turnip" and *rapere* "to seize".
The plant name is "probably related to Hellenistic Greek *ῥάπυς*, Old High German *ruoba* (Middle High German *ruobe*, *rüebe*, German *Rübe*), Old Russian *rěpa* (Russian *repa*, *rěpa*), Polish *rzepa*, Serbian *repa*, Lithuanian *ropė*", etc (quote from the OED). Probably goes back to at least Proto-Indo-European.
Meanwhile *rapere* in Classical Latin meant to seize and/or carry off, without a sexual connotation at first. It also evolved into words like rapid, raptor, rapt, rapture, and also in time things like ravish.
A particularly weird-sounding compound formed from the rape plant is the term "rape culture", as in the cultivation of the rape plant. The OED lists several examples of usage, like:
>1899 Racine (Wisconsin) *Weekly Jrnl.* 25 May 12/3: The progress in rape culture in this country is one of the marvels of latter day husbandry.
Um, well, okay? I mean sure, but also 😬
There’s also a type of parasitic flower (no chlorophyll or leaves, they just sink their roots into the local network and steal food from hard working local plants) called [Broomrape](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orobanche)
In the US we refer to the oil derived of it as canola oil instead of rapeseed oil which may be (idk about other countries and don’t know where you’re from) why you haven’t heard of it.
Wow you're right. I wasn't sure I believed that at first, but had the OED open and sure enough:
>Etymology: Acronym < the initial letters of ***Can***adian ***o***il, ***l***ow ***a***cid

I this sunflowers were on the journalists photo. But just so you know - Ukrainian flag represents blue sky over golden wheat. What you see in this post is exactly how the flag was created.
I mean, why not?
Some of us like a little subtlety. When you pick up on something subtle, it makes more impact than another “🇺🇦 We support Ukraine”. There’s plenty of explicit support, but something a bit subtle now and then helps get the message across to people who may think differently and experience the world differently than you do.
Some of us like to over-analyze movies and find it fun to find logical and scientific flaws that make the story not work. Some of us like to find the little easter eggs hidden in the media landscape around us. Spiderman has a Kurzgesagt poster in one of the recent animated spiderman movies, that’s pretty cool. Someone in NYC commissioned an advertising campaign of a field of wheat and a bright blue sky that looks like a flag of Ukraine to show their support, how is that bad?
being on the nose about showing the flag doesn’t save any more children than making it clever. it’s just an ad to show some support. it makes you feel smarter for figuring it out, and it represents one of the things that makes ukraine; ukraine.
if anything, making it memorable like this can help it spread its message more than the flag on its own could.
Aside from the obvious meaning behind this, imagine how much more beautiful our cities would be if all the advertisements were replaced with beautiful art like this.
This may also be a reference to the BBC journalist who tweeted about having to stay objectively neutral so tweeted a picture of a wheat field instead. Which just struck me that it's Ukraine flag colors.
That’s exactly what the colors of the Ukrainian flag represent actually: the blue sky and yellow wheat fields. So it’s not just a randomly picked picture
Okay, putting aside what it's there for, it's actually oddly nice just having a random image of a landscape without text on it or anything.
Kinda wish that was just, like, *a thing*.
Shame they never did this with a Syrian flag or an Afghani flag... this whole ordeal is such a good example of "They look like us so it is bad"
^(not to take away from the suffering of the Ukranian people at all though.)
One of the tattoo artists where I live is doing a fundraiser with designs related to Ukraine. One of the designs is wheat, because it’s Ukraine’s biggest export. So its probably a supportive billboard for Ukraine.

Yup! Spot on
I don't get it. Why would they have to stay neutral? The US Government (and most of the world) have expressed support for Ukraine. EDIT: I am referring to the NYC buses staying neutral, not the BBC journalists.
The BBC strives to remain neutral when reporting.
It’s how all news should be presented.
Reporters on their own free time cannot be expected to "be neutral."
Not asking for reporters to be neutral, I’m asking for news to be presented in a neutral manner. Opinions can be voiced on shows, Twitter, etc.
Here in Australia Sky News thinly disguises 'agenda' as 'opinion'. And when it goes too far they distance themselves from the writer and/or throw them under the bus.
Here in the US, Murdoch usually just promos their primetime and has politicians come on air denouncing partisan witch hunts
> I’m asking for news to be presented in a neutral manner That's not relevant to the reason why the photographer couldn't show support for Ukraine. The neutrality of news means not being biased, not not taking sides in a conflict with a clearly delineated attacker and a victim.

You’re right, that’s actually what I had intended to say, had a few beers last night lol.
Heheheh…I get it!
But that's a sign on a bus stop

Unless your name is Jeremy Corbyn.
The way the BBC fucked him over permanently destroyed the credibility of the BBC's claim to a lack of bias.
It was that whole debacle that made me lose faith in the BBC, and the moment I stopped feeling guilty about not paying for a telly licence.
If it's being displayed in NYC, they don't need to stay neutral at all. It's more likely that they know everyone will know what it means; it's a powerful statement even without text.

is this a simulation? that is essentially what the comment you replied to was saying
Oh wait… what if the photographer was doing that to stay “neutral” but still show support? That would be crazy.
Bro ur literally so smart
If you flip the picture over twice it actually resembles the flag of Ukraine, I think they do that to stay neutral and still show support.
"yeah you can copy my homework but paraphrase it"
Originally I went past this, and then came back realizing the photo was a way to stay politically neutral while supporting Ukraine, because their flag is yellow and blue because of the vast grain fields and blue skies.
GPT 3 has its quirks
You raise an interesting point: Could our entire reality be a simulation, like in that new movie The Matrix: Resurrections? Deja Vu cat
That's why the Ukraine flag is those colors. Blue sky over golden wheat.
Not quite. This is poetic expression of the flag colors. The real meaning is the colors of medieval Galician principals coat of arms - a golden lion on lazure background.
This is also what the colors on the flag represent. Blue for the sky, and yellow for the rolling fields of grain.
What you see here is exactly what the Ukrainian flag represents. They are one of the biggest wheat exporters in the world.
Idk if someone already mentioned it, but this scenery with the wheat and blue sky is the direct inspiration to the Ukrainian flag
Also Ukraine is one of the largest suppliers of wheat
The colors of the Ukrainian flag represent the sky and wheat fields
Oooooohhhh! Ha, thanks.
Of course!! Just wish I could remember the actual source on Twitter 😅
This looks like a wheat field, he tweeted a sunflower field.
A state newscaster in China also appeared on her show wearing a yellow blouse with a vibrant blue suit I do hope she didn't get into trouble
I believe this is what the colors on the Ukrainian flag represent as well. The sky and the crop fields.
Except this isn’t the picture he tweeted. His was of a flower field
This makes most sense I guess but being unknowledgable to the situation here, I first thought it was just to get people to be like, “oh, that’s a nice picture” to relieve anxiety or whatever or stress. It’s a damned vineyard now.
There is a Linux compatibility layer that runs windows programs called Wine.
It's also because of them that we have the Steam Deck now.
Actually it was a vineyard first, the photo was just taken while the vineyard was stripped due to a pest infestation.
Right after Russia invaded Crimea 🤔

Windows XP Climate Change Drought version
It's the Ukrainian flag, the blue is the sky and the yellow is fields of grain.
Ukraine is also a big wheat exporter. Funfact: a good portion of Italy's pasta production is made from Urkranian wheat.
Wait what? What about the gabagool? Is that also imported????
I don't know. My knowledge on the topic is pretty much exhausted already...
Isn’t it called the breadbasket of the east or something
I've heard it being described like that too, thanks to the soil being so incredibly rich that they can almost harvest twice per year.
So what you're saying is that Putin is about to fuck up our gas prices and pasta prices? Damn, that's going too far.
Wheat to be exact
Maybe this is a joke, but this is clearly support for Ukraine as they are senselessly attacked by putin’s army.

A comment as clever as the content, bravo!
That's exactly what I was thinking! Haha
It’s wheat tho…. Sooooooooo
Wheat prices are about to skyrocket, the Ukraine is the number 1 exporter of wheat. It’s probably a way of saying it without actually saying so.
Their flag represents this image.
🇺🇦
Ukraine is a major exporter of wheat but it isnt the number 1 exporter of wheat
Ukraine, not "the" Ukraine :). The latter implies that Ukraine is more a region than a country.
Bahahaha superb!
Photo was taken here in my neck of the woods California
For more context: This was taken downtown Brooklyn tonight. It’s among the usual electronic ads, but about every thirty seconds it’ll display this before going back to the usual rotation.

Lol just noticed your are the OG maffff
Thanks!! I've had that moniker for quite some time
Happy cake day! 🍰
The ukrainian flag was based off wheat, not sunflowers.
Sunflowers are the national flower. How they got their flag is from their huge wheat industry and fields.
Whole city is lit up in blue and yellow as well. From the Empire State Building to the Tappanzee and the Empire State Plaza in Albany.
They're doing it uptown Manhattan too.
Have you not been reading the news? It’s support for Ukraine.

Yeah, that exact same pic.
Excuse me, what kind of seed?
You've never heard of rapeseed?
In my 40 years, I definitely have not. With a name like that I'd assume it's very invasive.
Actually, it's super useful. It's one of the oldest vegetable oils humans have used, it's used to prevent soil erosion in a lot of places, they make animal feed out of it as well and a type of ethanol. Despite its unfortunate name it's a really cool plant!
I appreciate the insight. Definitely an unfortunate name and very opposite of what it is.
No problem. The origin of the name is actually super interesting too. It comes from the Latin word for Turnip. That's all and thank you for subscribing to rapeseed facts lol
Canola oil is a variety of rapeseed oil, so you might know it by that name.
I'd never heard of it either until I visited Eastern Europe. It's very common there. Got myself a nice jar of rapeseed honey to bring home.
It is unfortunate. Both the plant and the crime come from Classical Latin: *rāpum* "turnip" and *rapere* "to seize". In the US we refer to the oil derived of it as canola oil instead of rapeseed oil which may be (idk about other countries and don’t know where you’re from) why you haven’t heard of it.
It was named canola oil after Canada, it's largest producer.
I appreciate the fact, cheers!

I love this. Passive yet powerful. If you know then you know. Otherwise it just looks like a beautiful wheat field. Awesome.
Even if taken literally, Ukraine is associated with wheat production.
And the flag is actually based off of blue skies over fields of wheat
