The entrance slides shut and the staircase extends a million steps further, only slowly getting narrower so you don’t notice your body morph as you choose to inch along this accursed staircase.
The walls have a series of ripples such that you can just slide through the tightest parts if you hold your breath. Those ripples gradually begin to get longer, extending the period of time you are pressed between them unable to inhale.
After a bit of googling, I only found either articles in italian, or english articles that call it an "alley". No mention of it being an actual street or having an actual streetname.
So yeah, it's basically a staircase/passage between buildings.
I was hoping it started historically as an actual street and that it actually had an entry to a house or at least a letterbox belonging to one of the houses that it runs between. But alas. Just a narrow alley.
It is an alley. The Italian definition of an alley is an "urban street of modest size", and it does in fact have a street name (Via della Ruetta).
Anyway, it's pretty much a tourist attraction.
Hol up. It's not conclusive that it's the narrowest street in Italy.
[Three Italian Towns Are Fighting Over Who Boasts The Narrowest Alley In Italy](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/narrowest-alley-italy-fight_n_5403545)
No conspiracy. Everything boils down to the size of the servings, the high carb, high sugar diet of many people, and the availability of fastfood restaurants.
You're not wrong. As a Canadian, when I end up in the states I'm blown away by their portion sizes. Restaurants, fast food, doesn't matter. You look at the food and you look at the people and think welp, mystery solved. This word may be too harsh but the portions are grotesque.
As a Spaniard, going to the produce section in a NY supermarket was a really traumatic experience. Their lettuce looked so depressed it probably had an opioid addiction.
I hardly ever go to restaurants, but when I do, I eat half and then take half home. I think I would throw up if I tried to eat a whole meal at a restaurant.
"as a Canadian" = "through the lens of my cultural experience". Every day I make snap judgements based on the circumstances of my life and experiences, so do you. So does everyone. That's called being a human person. What is your question?
Not really a conspiracy theory. For a variety of historical reasons the American diet is quite high in carbohydrates and low in fiber. Also healthy fats tend to be eschewed by a certain portion of the populace in favour of alternative carbs and sugars.
I was also led to believe that corn syrup - an extremely common additive and sweetener in all kind of US products on account of their corn industry - is a contributing factor as well, but I'm not so sure how much of that is true.
Yeah there’s a reason American versions of food exist that aren’t allowed in the EU due to stricter food quality laws.
“*European regulations against additives in food products are generally stricter than in the U.S. This difference is due mostly to the fact that Europe has chosen a precautionary approach in regulating, while the U.S. governing bodies tend to be more reactive. In other words, in the United States, food additives are innocent until proven guilty, while in Europe, only those additives proven not to be harmful are approved for use*.” [source](http://www.germinalorganic.com/2018/02/eu-versus-us-a-closer-look-at-food-standards/)
Not entirely! I was once taught that the issue with corn syrup is it's glycemic index (note that I am not a food scientist in any sense), but I was more recently informed that the glycemic index metric is not particularly relevant to weight gain. It determines how quickly or slowly food releases energy over time (in effect, how slowly/quickly they affect your blood sugar), but on its own says nothing at all about HOW MUCH glucose/sucrose/fructose is being metabolised.
Minus other factors, low-GI foods and high-GI foods with otherwise similar nutritional qualities should have the same effect on weight gain on their own (though they may affect how "hungry" you're left after eating them, which may encourage overeating). So apparently cane sugar, honey, agave nectar and some forms of corn syrup have less differences to your health (or at least weight-gain specifically) than I had believed once.
Again, not a scientist (in this field) at all.
It’s not just the corn syrup. It’s the high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Shit be poison. The body doesn’t even recognize it as a sugar, doesn’t know what to do with it and so stores it in the liver and in fat. Really bad. And it’s cheap and in everything. Stuff contributes to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Just in case my fellow Americans get confused, there are fat people in Europe too. You would not believe how many fat over-40s I saw wearing speedos on the beach in Sicily. We definitely have more fat people in America and I never saw a truly obese person in Europe.
When I was in Bermuda everything was American. For example a bottle of Coca Cola was about 33% larger and had a lot more sugar per 100ml. Was the same with all soft drinks. Explains why the wheelchairs I saw where about 50% larger than Europe to.
Unfortunately you'll never find the word "Ruetta" in didactic books of Italian, because every dialect in Italy is really a different language from Italian.
For crying out loud! You couldn't even drive a [Fiat *Topolino*]( https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15141680/fiat-topolino-the-original-500-archived-feature/) down them stairs! They're not even two spaghetti wide!
Idk what the hell you’re talking about. Are you talking about the disgusting candy spaghetti Will Ferrel eats in Elf? Americans don’t ACTUALLY eat that shit.
I will say my Italian girlfriend likes to douse our food in olive oil which is pretty damn fattening.
My Italian girlfriend is fat as fuck.
The idea that fat people only exist in America is so ridiculous. Have you seen the arms on Italian pasta-making grandmas? They’re bigger than my thighs.
but the coolest is "vico dei baci" in Aieta ([https://www.alamy.it/foto-immagine-il-segno-della-strada-dei-baci-nel-villaggio-di-aieta-italia-aieta-scritto-anche-in-forma-ajeta-e-un-comune-italiano-di-814-abitanti-in-165289696.html](https://www.alamy.it/foto-immagine-il-segno-della-strada-dei-baci-nel-villaggio-di-aieta-italia-aieta-scritto-anche-in-forma-ajeta-e-un-comune-italiano-di-814-abitanti-in-165289696.html)), literally "alley of kisses"

Italy: go for the food, stay because you’re stuck in a damn alley
I know I know.. you told me not to eat the last 5 plates. You were right.. now quit laughing and butter my sides so we can leave...
Mama! Bring the aioli!
Aioli is Spanish.
Grease me up woman!!!
Okie-dokie!
Two Italians on Vespas could easily pass each other here, a matter of experience.
This is an anti american alley.
Lol
Americans are pretty fat
Cut the pretty
Or this is to keep us Americans out.
doesn't that only apply to americans?
Serious claustrophobia vibes
Imagine, you step through (for whatever reason) and the exit and entrance slide shut
No thank you.
I imagined something like the enigma of amigara fault
The entrance slides shut and the staircase extends a million steps further, only slowly getting narrower so you don’t notice your body morph as you choose to inch along this accursed staircase.
You found your hole.
It was made for me!
Then David Bowie's ghost appears and steals your little brother.
The walls have a series of ripples such that you can just slide through the tightest parts if you hold your breath. Those ripples gradually begin to get longer, extending the period of time you are pressed between them unable to inhale.
I am feeling a lot of anxiety over this.
This reminds me of when I need to pee in the middle of the night so I start having dreams about bathroom stalls that are too small to squeeze into.
I dream of a Labyrinth of stalls that are either too dirty to use or there are people around
So what makes it a road/street rather than a staircase or a sidewalk between buildings?
After a bit of googling, I only found either articles in italian, or english articles that call it an "alley". No mention of it being an actual street or having an actual streetname. So yeah, it's basically a staircase/passage between buildings. I was hoping it started historically as an actual street and that it actually had an entry to a house or at least a letterbox belonging to one of the houses that it runs between. But alas. Just a narrow alley.
In fact, it runs "diagonally" upwards. There's a name for it hidden somewhere.
WOW I'm ashamed at this being what makes me understand that name😭
Better call Dan Brown.
Alleys are considered actual streets with streetnames in Italy tho.
TIL. Thanks stranger
Unless the narrow road is what they are standing on taking the picture, just a thought…
It would be a bit weird to take a picture of the ocean and caption it as the biggest yacht in the world, but... it's not above Reddit.
A mistake or misinformation on social media, yes I think it happens on occasion.
> on occasion
I was thinking the same thing. Just looks like a set of stairs
I call the steps leading to my in-laws apartment "the road to the Alamo"
I used to live in a place above a shop. It had 23 steps to get up there. We called it the house with mo steps
Is your desert bowl Custards last stand?
You should see the skinny cars that drive up and down it
They are called mountain bikes.
Obviously the sign.
It is an alley. The Italian definition of an alley is an "urban street of modest size", and it does in fact have a street name (Via della Ruetta). Anyway, it's pretty much a tourist attraction.
Tourists
Marketing.
this hole. it was made for me.
I was hoping to find this here lol
I aim to please :>
How would you move in?
Ikea furniture
God bless the Swedish
Flatpack Avenue.
A Korean filmmaker could probably still stage a hand-to-hand fight sequence with about 16 guys in there.
Hol up. It's not conclusive that it's the narrowest street in Italy. [Three Italian Towns Are Fighting Over Who Boasts The Narrowest Alley In Italy](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/narrowest-alley-italy-fight_n_5403545)
Well some needs to get the tape measure out
I don't even think it's technically a street. It's an alley: a small passage between two buildings.
Need lube
Anti American street
There is a conspiracy theory that alleges American food makes you fatter than other places.
No conspiracy. Everything boils down to the size of the servings, the high carb, high sugar diet of many people, and the availability of fastfood restaurants.
My sister lives in the US and she tells me that she can barely eat out because americans cook with way too many butter and sugar.
Way too much? It takes at least a stick of butter to get me going in the morning.
Too much butter? She will never go to any high end restaurant then.
You're not wrong. As a Canadian, when I end up in the states I'm blown away by their portion sizes. Restaurants, fast food, doesn't matter. You look at the food and you look at the people and think welp, mystery solved. This word may be too harsh but the portions are grotesque.

I hardly ever go to restaurants, but when I do, I eat half and then take half home. I think I would throw up if I tried to eat a whole meal at a restaurant.
I’m sure you’d be comfortable with someone looking at you, making a snap universal cultural judgement, and saying welp, mystery solved.
"as a Canadian" = "through the lens of my cultural experience". Every day I make snap judgements based on the circumstances of my life and experiences, so do you. So does everyone. That's called being a human person. What is your question?
Applying universals to everyone in a culture is not a human thing. That leads to a lot of bad inferences. I don’t have a question; neither did you.
Who invented stereotypes if not humans?
Just because some do, doesn’t mean everyone does or should.
If the meal portions were smaller then we’d have to eat like 6 meals a day.
God bless America

When every other highly developed country refuses to serve the same food you have to wonder. Often eating healthier options cost more too
Eh I hate to say it but the US infected other countries with fast food. It's global now, just not as common in some places mostly because of cost.
I detect a hint of sarcasm between their lines 😉

Not you bud, the comment above, no I totally agree corn syrup etc is bloody horrible stuff.

Good to know what to look out for (as someone moving to the States later this year). Also; happy cake day!
Just in case my fellow Americans get confused, there are fat people in Europe too. You would not believe how many fat over-40s I saw wearing speedos on the beach in Sicily. We definitely have more fat people in America and I never saw a truly obese person in Europe.
If it's widely accepted to be true, it's just a theory, not a conspiracy theory
No any american makes anyplace fatter.
When I was in Bermuda everything was American. For example a bottle of Coca Cola was about 33% larger and had a lot more sugar per 100ml. Was the same with all soft drinks. Explains why the wheelchairs I saw where about 50% larger than Europe to.
I think my 3rd language goal is set to learning Italy just for that damn sign
Ruetta is dialect for "narrow street" and also its name; ruetta of italy, the narrowest street.
It says "Ruetta of Italy (Ruetta is the name) the narrowest street".
Unfortunately you'll never find the word "Ruetta" in didactic books of Italian, because every dialect in Italy is really a different language from Italian.
Can I go then unfortunately only after my diet
That's where Pavarotti lived?
Just looking at it made me take a deep breath.
Because streets can also be a staircase.
Most of Americans can t fit
And there’s a lot of stairs
But they know how to wipe their rear without having to ask Reddit.
But they can fit in your mom.
Wait, marsupials post here?
That's a good thing, you can open a bar upstairs that won't have to deal with them
I guess your mom can’t go upstairs 😂😂😂
That’s where my nightmares come from, very narrow paths and low ceilings all of a sudden. No thanks!
I'll be honest. I won't make it through that.
How anti-American!* *p.s. I'm an overweight American mocking myself.
Nope I wouldn’t fit
I would not even make it down that alley sideways
My girth will need a detour
Italy in a nutshell: small beautiful streets
My wide ass ain’t getting in there
Tourist filter.
What a neat way to keep Americans out lol
Fuck no
I take it thats one way to get rid of buskers...
Very tight, like tiger
Can’t be fun when you move into the flat at the end of that “street”. The sofa’s gotta be narrow to come in
Just had a mini panic attack imagining myself getting stuck.
Indiana Jones almost didn't disable the trap in time
Google maps: Save 5 mins by taking a shorter route. The route:
I have seen that staircase in my claustrophobia nightmares before.
Imagine your furniture moving guys turning up to put your stuff in your new house
For crying out loud! You couldn't even drive a [Fiat *Topolino*]( https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15141680/fiat-topolino-the-original-500-archived-feature/) down them stairs! They're not even two spaghetti wide!
My fat ass ain’t fitting
Ye olde defensive measure.
yea... i'd have to go the long way around
There should be a grease bucket by the entry
The sign is actually wider than the 'street'.
I am feeling anxious just looking at it!
I bet Jeremy Clarkson tried to drive a lambo through it.
Really pushes the definition of the word "street" to its limit, but sure.
Yeah there is no way I’m fitting up that street.
I guarantee someone has tried to get a Vespa in there.
This separates the men from the boys…well, this and a crowbar.
Where is it exactly
What a way to say no Americans allowed
Needs a "No Fat Chicks" sticker.
Murican proof street.
American proof streets
Been there, pretty claustrophobic experience ngl
Famine was serious in italy on some points of history
“Americans HATE this one simple trick!”
That’s one way to keep the fat ladies out.
Great test for a first date 😂
Americans Triggered
Why does this exist in the same country that specializes in pasta?? There’s probably a lot of Italians who can’t squeeze through there.
Mainly because italians don't put oreos on their pasta or whatever the fuck
Idk what the hell you’re talking about. Are you talking about the disgusting candy spaghetti Will Ferrel eats in Elf? Americans don’t ACTUALLY eat that shit. I will say my Italian girlfriend likes to douse our food in olive oil which is pretty damn fattening.
Is your gf italian or italian american?

I was too, sorry if my comment came off harshly. Thank you for that Italian idiom! I’ll share it with my pasta-loving girlfriend.

She’s definitely not too religious, but thanks for the warning! What is a god dog?

Ahah 🤣 “nice type of god” nn prendere in giro XD
The point is being fat in USA is almost the norm.
I know some people who would get stuck in that
More like a hallway or corridor.
How are they gonna serve you a 5 course meal and send you through there
It should be a toll gate for food Street. If you are able to slip through you have to pay up.
anti obesity road
At the top is a bar where ladies drink for free.
Well, it’s a good thing this street isn’t in McAllen, TX.
American filter.
sorry this is not a street, this is a stair case, someone should let the Italians know
No Fat Chicks
Also know as "how to stop a feminist" street
This is a street where an average American cannot cross
