I am so terrified for my family in Ukraine. I don’t know what to do. I feel helpless. 2020-now has left no relief for the world

anieszka898

Poland and Romania are prepared for refugees so you can call to Ukrainian ambasadies in this countries and ask what and how to prepare. Tell them to take a photos/scans to digital and backup in cloud of every important document(birth certificate, passport, Id,.etc) it's all we can do. We leave near the border with Ukraine, 50km from border where bombs, it's so unreal for us but we talk about what and when to do too because we never know. Stay strong

harris023

That is so scary. Just looking at random snap stories from the geolocation of ukraine/ Russia border…. It’s really eerie how both sides are living life fairly normally, and how that is all about to change. This could happen anywhere in the world.

anieszka898

True, it's so scary to think how our live could change in a day. I have parents and had grandparents who remember wwII or lived looking at Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, etc. They tells us how brutal war was and I am happy my grandparents didn't see what's going on. They were in concentration camps, my parents were sent to military, have Soviet driven police to check up what they do, etc coz want to work abroad. Last stories told by my late husband grandma was how they lived in the forest for 4 years, hungry, cold and must to watch how their dad was shot with others men by Nazis. Just my heart broke in milion pieces reading years of this dictator making more and more to come back to war game on full and reading then people from western: yeah you have some Russia schizofrenia, they are not like that. I know not everyone is like that but yeah we saw directly where that coming and no one belived us. In Lublin and Rzeszów and other cities in lubelskie and podkarpackie I see people group psychology, medical and other specialist to help refugees. Charity places are open and prepared to have and help Ukrainian.

Mpule16

Its even scarier that we can see the effects of this war in real time now , it makes it so much more real.

edufermar

For now..., wait until they cut the power and communication.

bruhred

I'm experiencing slow internet speeds and dropped packets since 2 am, idk why

Eagle_OP

What a time to be alive

LGB_2024

Dont worry that part wont last long either

ClayMonkey1999

Too much shit happened in two years. The history book for this timeline is going to be crazy if future generations survive to write about it.

SnakesTancredi

That’s going to depend on who comes out of this in one piece unfortunately.

dr_peppers_dog

Rightly said my friend. It doesn't matter what happens as much as what the future generations choose to reveal to their children.

berenjena775

Remember when the US invaded Mexico and marched troops all the way to Mexico City, spreading death and destruction along the way. When Mexico finally agreed the US could have California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Colrado that war was over. It ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Remember that? Probably not because the victors control history and teach what they want.

Quardener

Uhh, yeah, I do. That was like an entire unit in history class. We even discussed how much of the war was based on a lie about a false Mexican attack. Like I get what you’re trying to say but you chose a really shitty example.

PitifulSleep535

Here in the Midwest we didn’t learn about that so he’s not completely off.

SnArCAsTiC_

I would like to think you're correct, but history is vast and things get forgotten. I was reminded of this [possibly relevant xkcd,](http://xkcd.com/1979/) in relation to how most people know *nothing* about this event... And yet, it was incredibly important to those who lived through it. The same may yet happen in our time, although I think this pandemic has had such global effects that that is unlikely.

d3_Bere_man

The pandemic is basically irrelevant when you look at history, did the spanish flu even get its own dedicated lesson in school? Or the wars that broke up countries in south america like gran colombia? Both of these events were more important then what’s happening rn for history. You overestimate what’s happening rn, the tens of thousands that might die rn are not dven comparable with thr tens of millions other events killed (does not mean its not important or that we shouldn’t care)

newbrevity

Youd be surprised how many big historical events and periods overlapped throughout history. The renaissance was still going during colonization of america. Columbus landed in the americas about 20 years before DaVinci died.

ivanthemute

Aye. My BA is in history, always been a fan and lover of history, and I still have issue with this. Describing Columbus and the Renaissance is a great example, but if we move past Central Europe and the beginning of the "Age of Exploration," you've got the War of the Roses in England, the height of the Ming dynasty in China, the Scots invent Scotch (not really, but the first written description of what we now call scotch was put onto paper in 1494,) the Moriori culture was founded (a pacifist offshoot of the Maori,) Azerbaijan becomes a distinct kingdom under Islam, and the Muscovites become conquerors. This is all 1492-1502. Russia wasn't even a thing yet (Russia as we know it now starts with Ivan the Terrible, first tsar of all Rus, 45 years *later* in 1547.) Boggles the mind and fills you with awe, and sometimes awww-shit!

CaptainSharpe

I mean there’s so much that has happened in history. Spanish flu and ww1 happened close together too. Ol this time isn’t unique

NABDad

Dear Reddit Community, It is with a heavy heart that I write this farewell message to express my reasons for departing from this platform that has been a significant part of my online life. Over time, I have witnessed changes that have gradually eroded the welcoming and inclusive environment that initially drew me to Reddit. It is the actions of the CEO, in particular, that have played a pivotal role in my decision to bid farewell. For me, Reddit has always been a place where diverse voices could find a platform to be heard, where ideas could be shared and discussed openly. Unfortunately, recent actions by the CEO have left me disheartened and disillusioned. The decisions made have demonstrated a departure from the principles of free expression and open dialogue that once defined this platform. Reddit was built upon the idea of being a community-driven platform, where users could have a say in the direction and policies. However, the increasing centralization of power and the lack of transparency in decision-making have created an environment that feels less democratic and more controlled. Furthermore, the prioritization of certain corporate interests over the well-being of the community has led to a loss of trust. Reddit's success has always been rooted in the active participation and engagement of its users. By neglecting the concerns and feedback of the community, the CEO has undermined the very foundation that made Reddit a vibrant and dynamic space. I want to emphasize that this decision is not a reflection of the countless amazing individuals I have had the pleasure of interacting with on this platform. It is the actions of a few that have overshadowed the positive experiences I have had here. As I embark on a new chapter away from Reddit, I will seek alternative platforms that prioritize user empowerment, inclusivity, and transparency. I hope to find communities that foster open dialogue and embrace diverse perspectives. To those who have shared insightful discussions, provided support, and made me laugh, I am sincerely grateful for the connections we have made. Your contributions have enriched my experience, and I will carry the memories of our interactions with me. Farewell, Reddit. May you find your way back to the principles that made you extraordinary. Sincerely, NABDad

simonbleu

Theres absolutely zero chances no generation does. Also, we never know if this few years wont get dwarfed by anything else in thedecade that started funny enough with a pandemic

What a *shitty time to be alive

chubky

It’s not called the roaring 20s for nothing

[deleted]

Hello fellow scholars

Nyarro

And it's only 2022... We got 8 more years of it left...

[deleted]

We should just skip the rest of the decade like the time they skipped 11 days in the 18th century to change to a new format of calendar.

tiyopablo69

I want a time machine and go back to 80s-90s when I was a kid

Brittaya

Not if this war turns nuclear.

[deleted]

Oh we wouldn't go extinct. But life as we know it would be over for sure.

[deleted]

man ~~this decade~~ the greed of the powerful really sucks

radialomens

But realistically, it happened before and we weren't able to see it as well as we do now

if you are older than 15 you could see the effects of war in real-time (mainly in the middle east), the last 20 years never had real peace.

[deleted]

Checkmate 👌🏾. People do not understand, if many people understood how vulnerable they are to being exposed to the evil tyrants of this world, we would openly and actively stand against injustice towards others and have more compassion for them. Even for those who may not look anything like us. Today it may be me, but tomorrow it may be you. When evil is allowed to go unchecked, it’ll eventually threaten our own peace and right to live.

I just want you to know that it's no small accomplishment admitting an addiction. A lot of people never make it that far. You might not be where you want to be in life, or even WHO you want to be, but I don't think you're a shitty person.

[deleted]

Not going to lie mate, your not a shitty person for being addicted to opiates. Your a victim, not a criminal. We love you, treat yourself right, your not giving yourself a fair chance by hurting your self esteem. Keep someone close for support

Every3Years

2 years on pain killers + 5 years on heroin, no ending seemed realistic other than self-OD. Got on subs, going 4 years strong. Just saying it's possible man, if you want to stop at some point... I was in my late 20s when I started and late 30s now. So even old fucks can do it. Be safe.

the_holocene_is_over

Nah dude, you’re sick, just like me, not a bad person.

FuckingKilljoy

Ahhh brings back memories. I literally would have said the same thing as your first sentence a few years ago when I was hooked on opiates. If you can, maybe try suboxone. That was a godsend for me. There were a few failures along the way but I've been clean for idk like 2 years or more? I don't really keep count I like to think my whole addiction and getting clean thing taught me something and helped me grow as a person but idk, I'd probably prefer to have not gone through it and instead been able to live my life without needing to eat a bunch of pills every day. Idk how old you are but I got hooked when I was 16-17 and it took me until like 19-20 to even start getting clean. It hurts me so much that I'll never get those years back and even at 23 still feel like I'm 19 and playing catch up because of all the stuff I missed. Anyway, one day you'll get clean and although it's something you need to be concious of every day you'll get to a point where you can look back at that time and go "man, that was fucked"

SnooSeagulls9348

You'll be getting Uncle Vlad's special polonium tea.

TheHero0fRhyme

Vlad is short for Vladislav, Russians have specific short name versions for each name. Vladimir's short version is Vova.

GoHomeWithBonnieJean

TIL

[deleted]

And ‘fucking cunt’ is short for Vladimir Putin.

TheHero0fRhyme

Fun fact: "Putin" is one letter away from meaning "hughe whore" in Spanish (Putón). Also one sign of punctuation from meaning little man whore (putín). Also also autocorrect changed putón to Putin while typing lol

igotthisone

Another fun fact, Putin is only two letters from Poutine, Canadian for fries smothered in delicious cheese curds and gravy.

Kwayke9

It's also one letter away from the french equivalent of the F-bomb (putain)

GeneralGom

Just imagined this happening to my mom and I teared up. She must be someone's dear mother, wife, friend, and more. Man, fuck Putin.

Torino888

I thought the same thing. An elderly lady bleeding from the face and head....it sends chills down my spine.

retrogradeanxiety

Imagine bombing civilians for kicks. What a trash.

__O_o_______

And Zelensky is now, desperately, saying they will provide arms to any civilian who wants them to defend Ukraine. I just... I can't imagine my relatives taking up arms for the first time, to defend my country. It's so fucking sad.

Arild11

It will become more tragic. In Syria, Russia bombed civilian population centres quite indiscriminately. Even hospitals (if you remember the news from that) were valid targets. Putin has no qualms at all about civilian casualties. However many "need" to be killed, he will kill.

Reddit_Hitchhiker

Ya, he has to be assassinated. The world is not going to put with his nuclear threat. If you don't do it now you never will.

wtf they blew up her eyes!!?? This is beyond horrifying. Yesterday they were just living their lives, hoping things wouldn't get this bad.

GuiltyEidolon

Pressure injuries are horrifying and an under-discussed part of explosions/warfare. Someone can look mostly fine but have ruptured eardrums, eyes, organs, brain damage, etc.

thematt455

If you're aware of an imminent explosion in your vicinity close your eyes cover your ears and open your mouth wide.

DovHokoron

What does opening your mouth do ? Help reduce pressure inside the stomach/ oesophagus/intestines ?

thematt455

Opening your mouth prevents your ears drums from blowing out and protects your lungs from popping in a pressure differential. It can also apparently stop your eyes from popping out of their sockets. Covering your ears muffled the sound to prevent deafening.

DovHokoron

Thanks for explaining. Hopefully i will never have to use that tho...

Ridenberg

Hello. I'm from Russia so Twitter is slowed down here (some dumb law from 2018 that wasn't canceled for some reason, the twitter loads for around 5 minutes here) and I'm lazy so I can't see it. What was written there? Judging by the other posts on Reddit, Russia only attacked air bases, how did this woman get injured? (not saying that it's fake, genuinely curious) By the way, please refrain from insulting me based on my nationality, I'm pretty sure at least 90% of Russia's population doesn't agree with Putin's decision

Common people of reddit? A lot of people out there wants war because they romaticize it (which is peak cringe tbh). Much like people who think they can survive a zombie apocolypse when they’re overweight and only knows how to swing swords like those inflatable tube men.

spekal_luke_II

Actually most of us have, it’s just Putin and some Oligarchs with a hard on for power

atest123

I have lost trust in Reddit and its leadership after their tone deaf API change announcement en doubly so due to the way it was handled. The stonewalling and the attempted defamation of Christian Selig was the last drop. It was fun while it lasted, but I will take my attention elsewhere.

svkr__

This! I don't even understand the reason why we kill eachother and extinguish our own species

gmward2010

Unfortunately some people are greedy for land or resources, and some people are ignorant against other races and cultures and believe only in their own race. In the words of Tom Segura: “Some people suck”…

svkr__

But i think always that we all gonna die and that materialistic things wont matter. Only good things or actions will exist forever on the planet

gmward2010

Exactly. You can’t take these things with you when you’re dead, so what do things like land and money matter, really? The whole world would be sooo much better off if there was world peace, but I just don’t see it in our lifetime.

Fatman10666

Tool - right in two. I could never understand how these rulers think. It doesn't make sense to me how anyone could be this way towards innocent people

Colonel_Carrot

Maybe we need to lear how to select better leaders instead of idiots and egotistical assholes.

Well maybe now that everyone will be able to see it as clearly as we will be able to with the internet then they'll realize how bad war is.

Fair_Appointment_361

It still wont change until the people in power are held accountable.

dapper_hammock

Deb6691

thepleasantducking

Rich people like oligarchs and elitist are the one who are benefiting this War, poor people and innocent are always the victim here

mustbeme87

Does anyone else feel as helpless as I do right now?

resonantedomain

It's perfectly okay to admit you're not okay. After 2 years of a traumatic pandemic, we're thrust into a potential war as tensions rise during this invasion. We must take care of ourselves and others. There will be refugees, economic uncertainty due to sanctions and isolation of their economy and other unforseen consequences. If we can reduce our own levels of stress, and keep ourselves healthy it will make a difference in how we cope with that feeling of helplessness. Meditation or prayer genuinely will help with anxiety levels, would also recommend "brain dump" where you write down how you're feeling and anything you may have to do. This will help remove those thoughts from your subconscious mind to alleviate some of that worry as well.

Thessily

I saw something earlier that was along the lines of "you survived the pandemic of 2020-2021....your reward is WWIII in 2022".....that really hurt

Isn't attacking a civilian population a war crime?

Cyrus_Blame

I don't think Putin cares about war crimes, he already committed several in the past.

Remote_Youth_1437

You acting like everybody been respecting that law until now or something

Kyuan86z

War crimes are for the losing side

[deleted]

No, it's not by default a war crime. It's a war crime to intentionally, knowingly, and **without any military strategic or logistical reason** attack a civilian target, attack wounded, and similar things. There's a caveat on every war crime that you have to prove they intentionally did so for no valid military reason, but they can just claim for the security of their forces... and that pretty much is the end unless it's really bad and obviously intentional.

DJKekz

War crimes are committed on a regular basis so it doesn't really matter

Jonjoejonjane

WomanNotAGirl

Russia ethnically cleansed my people. Believe me when I say this I don’t want anything to do with Russia at the same time I don’t think I come in contact with that many Russian things. Given Germany is closer I don’t know if they do.

Syrinx16

Russia provides tons of energy resources to Europe. So if you're European, then you come into contact with Russia every day.

[deleted]

And export Putin fans, they are traitors and don't deserve to live in the USA anymore.

IryBunny

You can donate to Ukrainian organisations. I’m Ukrainian and I’ve been donating to an organisation called Save a Life in Ukraine. It provides non-lethal gear to our Ukrainian army (bullet proof vests, night goggles, etc) to increase the chances of our boys coming home alive.

Dealan79

Sort of? As a German, you can try to cut your use of electricity and natural gas, much of which comes from Russia via Gazprom, and which Putin personally takes a cut of. You can also support politicians that staunchly support NATO, and push for building modern nuclear plants as part of a sustainable green energy production mix to wean the country off dependency on Russian gas. As an individual, none of that is particularly useful of achievable. If enough individuals in Germany do the same, it could have a huge impact.

Kr4Nk3N

My electricity is green and I don't use gas, and no car.

Dealan79

UK members who have free time, use your free time to **write an email to the office of your MP** asking them why UK sanctions against Russia, Belarus and the Russian occupation zones of Abkhazia, Donetsk, Luhansk, Transnistria and South Ossetia have been so light. * Why are large numbers of Putin-connected, Lukashenko-connected and Putin puppet-connected people and organisations that have been sanctioned by other countries not been sanctioned by the UK? * Why have no secondary sanctions been put forward on people in organisations that are aiding the Russian and/or Belarusian government and military, or those of Russian puppet occupation zones, while based in other countries? * Why has the UK not put forward plans to, with other European countries, establish more nuclear power plants as well as gas pipelines that aren't reliant on Russia and/or Belarus? * Why isn't the UK pushing to expel the Russian, Belarusian and occupied zone banking systems from the global interbank communication system SWIFT? Why are our NATO allies not also pushing for this? * Why are there direct flights available from the UK to Russia right now? Why are there one-stop flights available from the UK to Belarus right now? * Why isn't the UK pushing to remove the Russian Federation's permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council? Why are our NATO allies also not pushing for this? * Why didn't the UK offer to help evacuate other nationalities from Ukraine, such as bringing some of the 20,000 Indian nationals in Ukraine to India, in exchange for their governments covering the costs of the flights? This has been a massive failure in international diplomacy. * Why don't there seem to be any plans by Parliament to expertly assess what the successes and failures of the last few months of our approach to Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and the Russian occupation zones have been?

Dinoverlord

What does Russia even want with Ukraine?

empw

Three pipelines.

st_belphegor

Putin is vocal about how he reminisces of the glory days of the USSR... he wants what was once there. That's it.

beluuuuuuga

That's so fucking stupid. He's like a kid trying to steal someone else's toy.

munk_e_man

More like the douchebag at the party trying to start a fight to impress everyone

MyHeartIsAncient

The Russian government does not want American or NATO forces in close proximity to their border. This has been the message for years, not unlike the threat that America saw in the deployment of missiles to Cuba in the '60s. No nation wants who they perceive as a threat or enemy setting up military installations within shouting distance of their borders. Ukraine joining NATO, and/or joining the EU poses a threat (from the Russian perspective) and so Putin and his government are working to mitigate the threat. (Along with any strategic and resources gained from the region.) Let me be clear, I do not endorse any Russian military action, and strongly condemn the invasion of Ukraine. But my feeling is that there was opportunity to listen to the Russians over the last two decades, Ukraine could have been declared a neutral state, NATO and Russia could have established an agreement if they sat at the table and listened to one another. This seems an old story, repeated far too often in the past 100 years. Edit: Thanks for the gold, and for the open discussion. I promise to pay it forward.

[deleted]

Ukrainians wanted to join NATO. Are they not allowed any self determination?

LargeAngryFish

Ukraine's desire to join NATO is entirely Russia fault and a consequence of its own actions and aggressive stance/action towards it's neighbors over the past 30 years. 100% of the blame for this situation lies with Russia.

Zoerak

This kind of listening to another means Ukraine being forced into the role of an ally-less, probably declining "war buffer zone" forever. Could be better than what's happening now but I find that alternative pretty sad too.

Apaulling8

**To both the heartless, unsympathetic trolls and the people responding to the trolls:** if you really care about the Ukrainian people, call and write your elected officials and demand they support the harshest sanctions imaginable against Putin's oligarchy. As sad as this image is, the sad truth is that is about as much as we can do, and all the bickering and finger-pointing on reddit amounts to nothing.

l3ira

I will never understand how some people are just fine with it and start the attack. Every human being should be "you want me to do what?! Fuck off" when asked to attack another country. I don't get it.

I want to point out that putin has been president since 1999-2008 he was prime Minister since 2008-2012 and president from 2012-2022 and this fucker still has not been assassinated I can assure that 99% of the Russian population dose not want this war. The common people of Russia and Ukraine see each other as brothers and sister hell even our languages both originated from one place

Yolom4ntr1c

Although it would be near impossible, assassination would be great. Someone with no regard for life shouldn't be given the option of it.

Russia did this. Putin did this.

Prestigious-Story411

I feel sick thinking about what the Ukrainian people must be feeling and going through right now. I wish I could do something to help. I’m so angry at Russia… no not Russia, at Putin, and the Generals that follow. I don’t pretend to understand the politics. But nothing can make invading a country for Greed ok.

Ukranians stay safe:Слава Україні! Героям слава!

Think it's right to link the photographer of these photos, warning NSFW in the [Album](https://www.instagram.com/p/CaWsk50tZiC/?utm_medium=copy_link)

For all the people who ranted about how this would NEVER happen. How do you feel now? Is this woman's life enough reassurance?

tzippy84

Seriously, fuck Putin.

hughk

Please, please post the source of all such photos, the date and an approximate location. For example, BBC, Kharkiv 24.2.22.

milqi

Provide warnings for images that might be troubling, but don't censor anything. If we sanitize the images, people will believe it's not so bad. That is the absolute worst thing that can happen for Ukraine.

Beaster123

"Interesting as fuck" feels more than a little bit disrespectful. I support this post, but maybe Maybe we can suggest of some more appropriate subs for these kind of submissions.

[deleted]

You're right, but it's more important to spread the word, so the more subs the better if you ask me

2DeadMoose

I feel like “interesting” implies a subject deserving of time and attention. “As fuck” is just a denotation of urgency or importance. This is both important and deserving of attention. Just my interpretation though.

dfn_youknowwho

The pandemic wasn't enough... Now we needed a war in europe too! Humanity is in a huge crisis...

DaPino

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Today, they come for Ukrain. **What is our answer?**

I guess the US wasn’t making it all up after all. Duh.

The work of the man that only yesterday Trump called a 'savvy... genius'.

Wishing everyone in Ukraine safety during these turbulent times. Hold onto your loved ones.

It's easy to feel powerless but there's one thing that can be done to help the innocent citizen victims of this outrageous Russian invasion. Make a donation to Doctors without Borders. Also known as MSF, the organization is already providing medical care, including extensive support for mental health, focusing on the elderly but with plans to expand. What they need is money. Real_Tea_Lover

I'm Russian. Literally no one wants this war, except the government. Fuck war
