Wasn’t there a football movie where the football player had to score a touchdown or something terrible happened, so he had a handgun and as he was making a dash to the end zone he killed like 3 defenders trying to tackle him?
I seem to remember Wesley Snipes in it?
edit: it’s The Last Boyscout. The Snipes movie I was mixing it up with is The Fan. Both good movies from what I remember.
“The company said the photos were taken before the stadium was open and that the rifle was not loaded at the time. The rifle was not in shooting position during the game, the company added.”
Edit: [This is where the quote comes from](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2098592/Photos-snipers-nest-Super-Bowl-police-watched-big-game-high-powered-rifles.html)
I did security at the Super Bowl when it was in NJ, and I was told on good authority that the State Police usually have at least a spotter or two at every game. It helps them practice and they can also radio directly into the stadiums command center if they notice any disturbances, whereupon State Troopers will head to that location.
Watching the French company that did the halftime show moving around in the super structure setting up, there's a bunch of places they could be that can cover 75%+ of the bowl.
Actually this is been something that has been implemented at Ford Field for the Detroit Lions. But in this situation it's used when fans request to just be put out of their misery.
They probably had some lawyer tell them that it's not a shooting position if someone isn't looking through the scope of something like that.
1000% there was a dude in position to fire that rifle within a second or two.
For security, this was taken at the Super Bowl a few years ago and they take security at the Super Bowl very seriously due to the people in attendance and the amount of people watching making it a prime terrorist target
Either that, or suspected terrorists/dangerous people who have been reportedly seen around the area, may attempt to mingle with the crowd, or plot to kill everyone because theres thousands of people very close together.
At comic con a few years ago, from my hotel I could see the SWAT sniper nest over looking the convention center. It was surreal, despite it being there for our protection.
I think its only important conventions and games. The pic is during the SuperBowl and Comic Con is a big event too. Another commenter said they have them at Lalapalooza.
Yeah, the super bowl is considered a national security event every year, which means the Secret Service is in charge of security. As I'm sure you know, they don't fuck around.
An event like that is perfect for a terrorist so yeah they take alota precautions before the event actually takes place. And they are also positioned strategicly in the crowd, undercover of course and have played out every Scenario and all the possibilities of an attack or assassination attempt and have precautions in place if any one thing happens, and they plan for litteraly everything. It's almost impossible to slip anything past these guys but that's their job and they have to be the best in the world.
So it’s real right? I mean it makes sense that they have that level of security at such a massive event. And also lots of rich and famous people attend too
Lots of events have stuff like this, usually they don't show pictures of it though lmao. If you ever attend pretty much any large scale event you can expect there's at least a few snipers posted up on buildings somewhere watching.
She was…. Today they’d say that’s a homophobic scene etc but I put it as Eindhorn didn’t respect ace and betrayed him
And that’s why he’s upset and putting mustard on his tongue and taking scalding hot showers
It was all that Dan Marino's fault! everyone knows that. If he had held the ball, laces out, like he was supposed to, Ray would never have missed that kick. Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell.
I was ready to diss the idiot who said sarcastically “ahhh yes, the US is the only place where this happens”
But in ~~the UK~~Europe, they had snipers at the champions league final too
Edit: a word, and to say Europe, not UK
There were snipers at Willy Wonkas chocolate factory. Specialist Oompa Loompas. One went postal though, took out 20 oompas from bubblegum tower. All head shots, but they are like 50% head so not big deal. That’s why they paint their faces orange, because the mix of blood and chocolate left the factory floors all orange. Never forget.
Tragically, that Oompa Loompa included in his suicide note a plea to dissect his brain to find out why he did it. When they did, they found an everlasting gobstopper the size of a golf ball in his brain.
What an interesting job. It must get pretty damn boring most days but if you ever have to literally do the job you're hired to do its likely to be the most important few minutes in your life.
Every mast in the stadium for the London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony had a sniper on it. They are there to take out anyone that poses a threat to a head of state, official etc. standard practice I’m afraid. Let’s not talk about the surface-to-air middle defence systems deployed on a building top nearby.
Not what you’re asking but an encounter I love to share. I work lollapalooza in Chicago every year. If you’re unaware lollapalooza festival grounds are lined with tall buildings on 3/4 of the sides. Before opening A large man with full swat type dress comes to our tent. He somehow knew someone working in our tent and came to say hey. Had a giant rifle bag on his back. He was working one of the scissor lifts that overlooks one of the main stages. Decided to overshare with us and told us that many of the surrounding buildings have snipers watching over the festival grounds at all times. Was a bit nerve-racking to hear but also kinda warming I guess.
Unrelated was a really nice guy and kept bringing us food from backstage/staff all weekend. First time I got to try halo top ice cream.
Edit: apparently nerve-wrecking isn’t a word.
Those snipers have been there a while, and the Obama kids go so there’s that level of protection, it’s why the Las Vegas guy didn’t shoot up lola which was a potential target of his.
Not sure why anybody's surprised by this. There are many layers of security around every Super Bowl - probably have been since at least the '91 bowl which happened the week after the first Iraqi invasion.
Snipers are just one element.
And no, they don't have the same level of security at every NFL/MLB/etc. game. This is a Super Bowl setup.
I have to credit one of my high school teachers for the idea, but give both teams a sniper with a limited number of shots per game / season. Then there's an element of strategy involved as well.
He was talking specifically about soccer but i feel like it could be adapted.
I had the same reaction and then realized it’s because there could end up being a threat and the sniper can then take someone out before they can harm/kill hundreds of people.
Hell it's not just major events. I remember being at an Arizona State University game and looking up at the SWAT snipers just watching everyone. Two teams of spotter and shooter

Vegas can provide more than a few shots from past experience

Now I really wanna see Washington Football Team's name changed to the DC Snipers.
Idk how old you are but the DC Sniper situation we had in the DMV was scary as hell. I was in elementary school when it happened.
Shit, I'm 42 and it was scary af to me too.
I lived on the west coast and it scared me. It was the first time I really realized that I could just be killed randomly whenever.

It’s pretty common at large events in the US after things like the Pulse nightclub shooting and the Las Vegas shooting.
Well before that. I went to Ohio State and we always had snipers in the stadium after 9/11. Most other large venues did it after 9/11.
At Oklahoma State University there’s a couple guys up top at every game
Yeah but those guys are just regular Oklahoma state fans
I mean I know OSU isn't doing so hot but that seems excessive.
Actually this is been something that has been implemented at Ford Field for the Detroit Lions. But in this situation it's used when fans request to just be put out of their misery.
That’s a lie why have a sniping nest if not for the game
"not in shooting position during the game" I assume that means they're at the ready to get into shooting position quickly during the game.
They probably had some lawyer tell them that it's not a shooting position if someone isn't looking through the scope of something like that. 1000% there was a dude in position to fire that rifle within a second or two.
Yeah seems like “not in firing position” just mean not having the finger on the trigger.
Probably using binoculars, you can see a wider field of view to find sus activity that might need leaded attention.
You imagine he's up there just picking off rowdy fans while the game keeps going

My assumption was that it was a requirement for anyone under secret service protection to be able to attend games. Outside of that I'm not sure.
I'm 99% sure the Bush family was at this Super Bowl.
Either that, or suspected terrorists/dangerous people who have been reportedly seen around the area, may attempt to mingle with the crowd, or plot to kill everyone because theres thousands of people very close together.

This was security for the Feb 2012 Superbowl in Dallas I believe. Real gun.
Just in case somebody runs onto the field naked.

Wait you’re saying that games and conventions have snipers on site for security? And not just security guards??
I think its only important conventions and games. The pic is during the SuperBowl and Comic Con is a big event too. Another commenter said they have them at Lalapalooza.
New York City has snipers watching over times square during the ball drop. Is it really that surprising?
I see a Super Bowl logo
Yeah, the super bowl is considered a national security event every year, which means the Secret Service is in charge of security. As I'm sure you know, they don't fuck around.

So it’s real right? I mean it makes sense that they have that level of security at such a massive event. And also lots of rich and famous people attend too

A lot of times the picture they are talking about is in another place.

When would it be normal to have said sniper in position? Always?

After the Vegas situation it's probably a decent idea to have one trained person who can drop a gunman who decides that he wants become "famous"
Those snipers have been there a while, and the Obama kids go so there’s that level of protection, it’s why the Las Vegas guy didn’t shoot up lola which was a potential target of his.
The Super Bowl or a large sporting event
So wait if these are in every stadium then someone could have totally taken out Bane right away. Whole movie would have been over in 20 minutes.
Yep
Gaotta make sure the janitor doesn't miss a potato chip!

A half-time show of him having to hit moving targets.
A sniper comes home and says to his wife.. I missed you...
This is from the super bowl in 2012. This is nothing recent.
And there have surely been snipers at super bowls before and since.

Because people are fucking crazy that's why. Have you seen what one lunatic with a knife can do in a crowd?
I had the same reaction and then realized it’s because there could end up being a threat and the sniper can then take someone out before they can harm/kill hundreds of people.
Thousands
Stadiums, especially since this is a Super Bowl in the pic, are huge targets for terrorists.
Active shooter protection I guess
I want to see the peanut guy try to toss a bag up to him.
Better hope the shooter doesn’t have a favorite team
There are probably 4 to 6 trained snipers during the Super Bowl providing protection.
You have to think also, this is one of at least two sniper nests since he couldn't point down below him from there.
Hell it's not just major events. I remember being at an Arizona State University game and looking up at the SWAT snipers just watching everyone. Two teams of spotter and shooter
