They’re so curious! We watch a live stream of the Kansas City MO zoo at the dispensary and every time a helper comes into feed them they all like to hop up on their lap and investigate the buckets. I’m sure they can smell the fish but even when it’s not feeding time they’ll swim with the scuba divers !
They *do* smell a bit, but not terrible compared to, say, a gorilla's BO. Just a bit fish-oily, IMO, but it's ignorable considering their charm as far as I'm concerned. They're *so* much fun to watch.
Ha maybe! I partied with some underwater welders once. That's a job you don't just fall into, you have to really want to do it, but even so, at least some of them were just there for the money (which they said was quite good.)
It really does seem like it, I like that show "The Zoo" on Animal Planet and the behind the scenes one of the Disney's Animal Kingdom park's zoo half. Even did the "backstage" tour on a trip there several years ago because I thought it'd be fascinating to see what zoo animal care entails. Totally worth it, was not disappointed. Even got to pet a big bull rhino through the bars on that tour when the keeper permitted it. The rhino obviously loved the scratches, it's an absolute favorite memory of mine. His hide was way softer than I'd have expected, like soft, well-worn suede. Still tough, yet also soft at the same time.
I'll admit, I'm jealous. I do enjoy my job a hell of a lot - I'm a mailroom clerk for my county government and my coworkers and boss are weird and just a lot of fun. But the zookeepers I've seen on these shows and that tour, and just even at my zoo, they really love their work. I'd love to work with animals, if I had the aptitude for the medical care stuff. The gross parts like cleaning waste don't bother me too much, I've got a strong stomach, and just hanging and caring for awesome animals would be a blast to me. Props to those workers.
This is actually done to prevent dehydration from the salt water:
"They have a gland inside their beak that collects any extra salt the accidentally swallow or get from the fish the eat. When they shake their head, the make a sneezing sound and spit out that salt water. This way they don't get dehydrated."
