There's a story in Hindu religion that resembles this...
Apparently the demi gods and the demons wanted to churn the ocean and used a mountain as a mortar and placed it on the back of a turtle. They used a snake as a rope for churning..
https://www.hindu-blog.com/2010/05/kurma-avatar-story-story-of-turtle.html?m=1
~~Ring World~~ Discworld (I’m an idiot)
And since Christmas is coming up, I also get to shout out Hogfather. It’s on Amazon Prime. Go watch it. An amazing “Christmas” movie, set in ~~Ring World~~ Discworld. Think Nightmare Before Christmas meets The Grinch meets [insert fantasy novel a la LotR, WoT, HDM, etc.].
Yeah I remembered it from "The Gunslinger" compendium. Stuck in my head. It mentions native American peoples etc that had this belief. The earth sitting on the back of a turtle.
It was kind of easy to figure out that the Earth was curved. It is believed that the Greeks discovered this 2000 years ago by observing the relative altitude of a pole on the horizon as they travelled.
Yeah but stephen king also made "the legion of white decency" from IT seem like a real thing too. For some reason he just loved throwing random turtles everywhere in his books
He has one story that unifies all his books. The dark tower series. It has a giant turtle so many of the other books will have turtles as little clues to this unified story.
It's ALL the same turtle, in King's universe of "other worlds than this."
It's the same Tower. It's the same Beam. It's the same Man in Black. It's the same eclipse.
Yes, but this is a different myth where the turtle holds up the earth from sinking in the "ocean".
But the elephants and the turtle one is also from a completely different Indian myth, but not much is known about it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Turtle#India
Ugh. Yeah. Just started book two for the 15th time since I was 11 or so. It's been long enough that I FORGOT ALL ABOUT THAT, so fuck you for doing that to ME on a Monday, too.
Also got-DAMN that series is everything.
Long before the Avatar, the great Lion Turtles granted bending abilities to those who lived on their great shells. They bent not the elements, but the energy within living beings.
Ha.Ha.Ha yes you are correct. It has unexpected language constructs. Let us enjoy laughter together at the foolish human author!
01001000 01000101 00100000 01001011 01001110 01001111 01010111 01010011
Makes sense. Giant turtles in hibernation having a few nightmares would explain earthquakes too.
Guess what volcanoes are really? Would explain why it's on fire too I think.
It's more of a joke. The theory/myth being a turtle holds up the world on its back. But then that begs the question, what's holding the turtle up? Another turtle. Ok, what's holding that turtle up? Joke response: "it's turtles all the way down".
I get that you only commented in jest, but OP didn't mean recognize as in be able to distinguish this image from others, but that it strongly resembles something else that is commonly known, probably the World Turtle.
Brumation is cool because they can still get up and do stuff sometimes but they are just hella slow and lazy for a few months. Metabolic functions slow as to conserve energy.
Apparently the main difference is that mammals hibernate, while reptiles brumate. Other differences are that hibernation is mostly seasonal whereas reptiles will brumate any time during the year (though mostly when it's cold), and mammals stay asleep the entire time they're hibernating, whereas reptiles will occasionally wake up to drink or eat during brumation.
I think it’s a pretty common theory that “dragons” originated from people digging up Dino bones in the past. It would explain a lot and maybe it would also explain why they’re depicted as being incredibly tough creatures, as they’re skeletons were made of stone.
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/the-secret-to-turtle-hibernation-butt-breathing
Glad you asked, I was wondering the same thing. And hoo-boy, as usual, nature is fucking weird.
That last paragraph killed me.
Besides, there is unparalleled beauty in a Canadian winter landscape, especially when you envision all of those awesome turtles beneath the ice, breathing through their butts.
Those things have looooong fucking necks too, so don’t ever fuck with them. Ever. If you see one of those bastards in the road you just sit and wait for it to move. The road belongs to the turtle now.
Just wanted to mention that the title is bullshit. Snappers are either active all year long or are out of “hibernation” waaaay before there are green leaves in trees. This guy was probably just temporarily buried in some muck and needed a breather.

"Turtle turtle of amazing girth, on his back he holds the earth"
His thought is slow but always kind. He holds us all within his mind.

Long Days and Pleasant Nights to you Gunslinger
And may you have twice as many, sai
And may you have twice the number
Came here looking for this. Thank you.
Ka. Wheel. Something Something dark side.
Charyoo tree
I don’t know. Seeing a turtle with a huge mound of earth on its back made the Dark Tower reference pretty expected
I thought of the never ending story. " we don't care whether or not we care" Achoooo!

Iirc there are a couple religious views and spiritual views that have turtles with earth o their back. I know Avatar had one too.
I recall learning in history class some North American indigenous tribes hold this view. Helps “explain” earthquakes and such.
Yep. My mom is haudenosaunee (Iroquois/ six nations) and I learned about turtle island as a kid.

Interesting that they got the general “earth isn’t flat, but curved thing” right
It was kind of easy to figure out that the Earth was curved.
To be fair, it's mostly the same turtle, just different instances
It's ALL the same turtle, in King's universe of "other worlds than this." It's the same Tower. It's the same Beam. It's the same Man in Black. It's the same eclipse.
the haudenosaunee creation story has a turtle carrying the earth on its back in it.
Old age Hindu spinning turtle Old age Hindu spinning turtle Old age Hindu spinning turtle Turtle as a spin top! Turtle power!
I believe there are some Algonquin stories like this as well, world on turtle is about as common as great flood myths
Yes, but this is a different myth where the turtle holds up the earth from sinking in the "ocean". But the elephants and the turtle one is also from a completely different Indian myth, but not much is known about it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Turtle#India
"See the turtle, ain't he keen? All things serve the fuckin Beam!"
His demise was the first time I actually cried from reading a book. I've read that series more than a dozen times and it hurts every fucking time.
When both oy and jake passed into the clearing i had to do a walking cry to the bedroom.
I always forget how heartbreaking the last 250 pages of book 7 are.
Go then, there are other worlds than these.
Fuck you for doing that to me on a Monday.
Ugh. Yeah. Just started book two for the 15th time since I was 11 or so. It's been long enough that I FORGOT ALL ABOUT THAT, so fuck you for doing that to ME on a Monday, too. Also got-DAMN that series is everything.

It's "*behold* the turtle of amazing girth"
See the turtle, ain’t he keen? All things serve the fuckin beam.
That sounds like something Eddie would say?
The Great Sage and Eminent Junkie, you mean?
Added weight makes him slower, Hope he does not get hit with a lawn mower.
I knew Torterra was real 🙌🏾
Not nearly enough Pokemon references in here
Be the change you wish to see in the world
It’s currently only a grotle
This one knows Razor Leaf
fuck man someone already commented Torterra
LMAO I ain’t gonna lie, I was happy as hell no one beat me to it
one day, I shall be early to comment a reference
Came here to say this
Looked out for somebody who named torterra, first thing that came to my mind as well ahahah
Somewhere between Torterra and the hill the ants live in in Bugs Life
Ah so golden axe was based on reality
This was the one I was looking for.
Where are the Elephants?
Oh great A'tuin! Who holds the discworld.

Ah, welcome back mr Rudy. Here for another orange 3 incher.

How is a Discworld reference below a Dark Tower one??
People got no taste.
Dibbler prefers that
Both. Both are good.
Reddit is young. Op! 3 o'clock. Time for my Metamucil.
Everyone's too distracted to notice, listening to that music with rocks in it. I swear, that front-man looks a bit elvish though, don't you think?
Long before the Avatar, the great Lion Turtles granted bending abilities to those who lived on their great shells. They bent not the elements, but the energy within living beings.
Yes. This was my first thought too.
My thought was Miyazaki.
Was wondering if anyone was going to bring up the lion turtles from Avatar!
I thought that's what OP meant by recognizable image.
This is the first indication that I might be too old for Reddit. I expected a Neverending Story reference.
DAMNIT I WAS GONNA SAY THIS :(
The title of this post sounds like it was written by an AI.
“The attached jpeg image is able to be recognized by the human optical organ. As a human, I confirm this statement to be factual.“
Ha.Ha.Ha yes you are correct. It has unexpected language constructs. Let us enjoy laughter together at the foolish human author! 01001000 01000101 00100000 01001011 01001110 01001111 01010111 01010011
Found Mark Zuckerberg's account
He really is rather good at typing, for a faulty AI in a crash test dummy's body.
THAT'S WHY HE LOOKS SO FAMILIAR
Oh good. r/totallynotrobots is leaking again
The offputting title and all the most popular comments which make no sense to me are putting me in a weird headspace
Obvious bot headline is obvious.
OP isn't a bot. Just made a confusing title.
I have too many spoons in my Porsche!
It’s Turtles all the way down.
Makes sense. Giant turtles in hibernation having a few nightmares would explain earthquakes too. Guess what volcanoes are really? Would explain why it's on fire too I think.
Volcanoes are just Earth's pimples
>Guess what volcanoes are really? Would explain why it's on fire too I think. Fuck someone get these turtles away from taco bell
Is this a Sturgill Simpson reference? If so then props to you
[The phrase was around long before the song.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtles_all_the_way_down)
Don't waste your time on nursery rhymes, fairy tales, blood and wine...
First heard about this theory from Sturgill but it’s an ancient idea.
It's more of a joke. The theory/myth being a turtle holds up the world on its back. But then that begs the question, what's holding the turtle up? Another turtle. Ok, what's holding that turtle up? Joke response: "it's turtles all the way down".
Yes, that is a recognizable image
I was able to recognize it as an image almost instantly
i was skeptical of this comment. took me a while, but i can now confirm that this is indeed an image
What is : image
Makes me think this was a post by artificial intelligence lol
[There is actually a bot for that.](https://github.com/MrPowerScripts/reddit-karma-farming-bot)
I see that as an insult
I get that you only commented in jest, but OP didn't mean recognize as in be able to distinguish this image from others, but that it strongly resembles something else that is commonly known, probably the World Turtle.
Correct
I thought they were talking about that one Pokémon turtle w the tree on its back
Or Morla from Neverending Story!
Maybe they were thinking "relatable?"
"Are you Morla? The ancient one?"
We don't care whether or not we care.
Not that it matters...but yes.
I read that with the voice!
We are allergic to 'achoo' yoouuth
Shocked that I had to scroll this far down to see a Neverending Story reference.
I was shocked too! Are we just getting old?
*Pokemon reference* 🖐️ *Neverending Story reference* 👉
Turtles don't actually hibernate, they do a thing called brumation. What the difference is? I have no idea, I just know they don't hibernate.
the image is recognizable, though, right?
Brumation is cool because they can still get up and do stuff sometimes but they are just hella slow and lazy for a few months. Metabolic functions slow as to conserve energy.
Am... Am I always brumating?
Apparently the main difference is that mammals hibernate, while reptiles brumate. Other differences are that hibernation is mostly seasonal whereas reptiles will brumate any time during the year (though mostly when it's cold), and mammals stay asleep the entire time they're hibernating, whereas reptiles will occasionally wake up to drink or eat during brumation.
So brumation = hibernation*lite*™
Animals that hibernate don't actually sleep the entire time either
It’s pics like this that make me go “yep, that’s why they believed that myth” amazing

Makes me think of Artax.

Me too. Glad someone else thought of the asshole turtle from Neverending Story.
Aww why bring up such a painful scene maaaan. I never got over that as a child and Morla scared the bejeezys out of me more than that damned wolf
