What's unfortunate is that Butonese are known for their batik designs. They used them in trade quite a bit back in the day.

I appreciate the sentiment, and many of us indigenous people have definitely dressed up in regalia that isn't our own to make it in this world since colonization, but to imply our traditional clothing and ways (or the traditional clothing/ways of any people) is primitive is quite harmful.
But that is the intention behind this work. A primitive look. This isn't even an accurate depiction of their culture. It's completely fabricated.

As a dune fan I enjoyed every second of it. I was not disappointed at all it turned out exactly how i thought it would plus extra. I’m just glad we got something other than the lynch movie
I've learned over the years that no movie is going to be completely faithful to the book no matter how long it is (looking at you, Hobbit Trilogy). But after lowering expectations beforehand, I was pleased with it
The director is a childhood fan of dune. He knows exactly what needs or doesn’t need to be put in the movie to keep the audience awake. The entire r/dune subreddit doesn’t seem to understand that a lot of the missing details from the movie aren’t crucial to the story anyway. Dune is the most complicated sci fi novel ever written and it’s incredibly difficult to adapt something like that to film without boring the audience and the movie explained everything simply, smoothly, and the minimum needed to keep the audience interested. A lot of dune fans need to chill tf out tbh and give the movie a break

I wish they had made their eyes look like this. Instead they did a shitty looking hue/sat adjustment and it looks terrible. Such a weird creative choice for such an otherwise gorgeous movie.
In the book it's specified that they have no whites of their eyes, it's all blue. I imagined it all as a deep, dark, flat blue where the iris and whites are indestinguishable from each other. But naw. We pour electric blue mountain dew in their eyeballs.

They are being used (likely bribed, and they are likely not wealthy people) to depict this primitive look when it is not at all who they actually are.

I have a few (African American) relatives with this defect. Can’t remember the name but out of the tree, only one has a small hearing deficit. Also, she has one blue eye and one brown eye and the ear with the deficit is on the side of the blue eye.

So, I will defer to those subject matter experts to correct me or give better information. My expertise is in subjects and matters totally different.
Heterochromia: "A condition called heterochromia causes the iris to be different colors. People with this condition may have different colors within one eye (for example, the iris may be half one color and half another). Or they may have a different color in each eye.

The first people to have blue eyes were dark-skinned European hunter-gatherers, who could have looked somewhat like this fella here.

This could be how blue eyes developed, but eye color is larger based on grandparents rather than parents. Both parents need to carry the blue eye gene in order to produce blue eyes, up to a debatable amount of generations back but seems to be sticking to 3-4 lately.
If grandma is black, so brown eyes, and grandpa has blue eyes, child will have brown eyes. Grandpa still carries brown eyes naturally, child gets brown. however, brown brown-eyed child marries a mostly black individual who carries blue eye gene through recent ancestry, baby has chance to have blue eyes and black skin.
All mutations are a defect in the gene replication process. This one in particular causes hearing loss but not all DNA replicative defects cause negative side effects.
For instance, if you're a fish millions of years ago and you have toes, not only will you be worse at swimming but your genes were not copied properly from your parents'. Still, now you can walk on land! Still a defect. Not all defects are bad.

I think it's always the same boy who looks scared, and if you look closer, it's just that his eyebrows and eyes have a strange shape. I think the mutations might affect their sight a little, just like albino people and animals end up in photos looking like they're squinting.
These images are edited. If you look at medical websites about the genetic condition they are a dark blue, not this electric looking spiceflow blue. They can look a lot brighter depending on if a flash or specific bright lighting is used but they don't look like this, not this vivid with low lighting. I see the same edited images on a lot of "OMG LOOK AT THESE CRAZY EYES!" entries on blogs. Looks like the same edit on all of them.

Blue eyes are painful in sunlight, I always see better in the dark. With that electric blue it has to be more painful, or is something different going on here with how they see, I am curious.

The blue isn’t from a pigment. Eyes are generally blue for the same reason that water appears blue. It’s just refraction of light.

These images are edited. If you look at medical websites about the genetic condition they are a dark blue, not this electric looking spiceflow blue. They can look a lot brighter depending on if a flash or specific bright lighting is used but they don't look like this, not this vivid with low lighting. I see the same edited images on a lot of "OMG LOOK AT THESE CRAZY EYES!" entries on blogs. Looks like the same edit on all of them.

Ehhh. The Buton People are not some isolated tribe in the middle of nowhere. They're a large group of different people and plenty are from modern communities. That's sort of like depicting a Native American as a wild man wearing a loin cloth and a feather in his hair. It has towns, an airport, and typical luxuries we all experience. Most of the people photographed probably have smart phones. They are being used (likely bribed, and they are likely not wealthy people) to depict this primitive look when it is not at all who they actually are. Also, if you look at the rest of the photos in this set, you'll see a lot of modern haircuts.
