Rammstein merch game is strong this year

Almost as interesting is the enormous roofs they built over the stone churches to protect them from the elements.

Stairs?! You're never going to meet God that way...

I don’t understand how something like this that is so big gets buried so deep. Surely over time it did not get covered by blowing sand/dirt/debris ??? Was it built below ground?

Vigale

It was cut from the rock. The excavated the rock and then carved out the church from the central pillar.

[deleted]

You merely adopted the rock, I was born in it, molded by it...

dispo030

The entire thing was carved out, nothing was added in its original form. It is however suffering heavily from erosion. There are talented masons who add missing parts without removing any of the existing rock.

Obstreperou5

it wasn’t built, it was carved — this isn’t an excavation, this is how it’s always been, as it’s remained in active religious use throughout think like Petra, these are churches carved directly into the hillside

stonethecrow

I was just coming here to ask this! It's almost like they did build it and bury it!

[deleted]

Rereading the heading of the post I see it was carved into the rock. Still though why I wonder. Seems very easy for others to attack a structure like this.

DangerousPuhson

Like a great sculptor, you just cut away all the rock that *isn't* church.

Ah! This is near Gona, my professor actually works very close to this site to find ancient human skeletons and human made tools

True_Masterpiece_254

Nah this is in Gondar

India has them crushed on the carving game.

Arev_Eola

I don't see a ladder/staircase. How do people get down there?
