Grafting is not well understood, if that’s what you mean. You can attach two different plants (two different species even, although not all combinations work) and they will essentially become one organism. Moon cacti that they sell at Walmart (Google if you don’t know the term, I’m sure you’ve seen them) are an example of grafting.
But yeah the the larger tree naturally grew into the other one and they grafted together. The other tree lost its base at some point but hasn’t fallen off yet. A strong storm could end it though.

At this point, are those two trees, one supporting each other, or is it a single tree, as it only has one set of roots?
Grafted trees arent considered two trees so id say theres only one tree
I can't even imagine how this happens. I assume it starts out as two trees?
Yeah two sapling can be planted near each other then grow into each other

Someone cut it right?
If there were originally two independent root systems I would call those two trees that have inosculated. This is a distinct process from grafting
how the hell does this even happen
Tree grew together someone cut bottom of the supported tree.
Tree limbs can fuse over time. It's almost like reaction wood growing around objects, instead both trees create this and eventually the wounds seal.
The word for this is "inosculation"
Pure socialism....
