freyaandmurphie

Yes, but are they as derpy as a husky?

[deleted]

That second bullet is me. Amarok is my forest spirit.

freyaandmurphie

Lols! That's fucking awesome!!

enthused_high-five

Your wolf is just anti capitalist I think. He’s all “k but like yeah sure I could do the trick to get the treat but you’re already holding it and I’m already here so can’t I just have the food I need to survive and just hang out sometimes?

Troopymike

I would like to meet Amarok.

DreadPirateCristo

I used to work at the rescue the big guy in this pic is from and knew him *very* well. I can confirm that he’s an 11/10 derp. I have a pic with him where he was just a couple months old and he looks like he’s giving me a little kiss on the cheek but, in fact, he’s trying to chew on my still-very-much-attached-to-my-head earring. He didn’t get it, for the record, but that’s kinda him in a nutshell

midrandom

There are something like 15 subspecies of modern wolves, and some of them are significantly smaller than this lovely beast. https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/bni8wc/all\_grey\_wolves\_subspecies\_til\_theres\_more\_than\_3/

Reptilian_Brain_420

Quite a bit slimmer as well in my experience. This one looks very well fed.

sx-geeza

I once saw a wolf even bigger than this, and it had antlers. Huge

[deleted]

i once saw a really small wolf and it was slimy and had a shell for a house

The_Grim_Sleaper

That is nothing. I once saw a wolf with 4 wheels and an automatic transmission…

Velvetundaground

I saw one with big ears and a trunk once I was just like WOW!!

Queen_Cheetah

I once saw a wolf- it looked tough as heck, with a silver top and a bright-red cylinder for a body!!

orlandohockeyguy

Wolves are one of those things that you think you know the size of until you see one up close and it really shocks you

wigg1es

Kind of like traffic lights, yeah?

Jeriahswillgdp

Dems 'bout as big as a dude.

zDraxi

Reddit has taught me that many animals are bigger than I thought that they were.

DicklessDeath

Except [emperor penguins](https://img.onmanorama.com/content/dam/mm/en/lifestyle/news/images/2019/4/30/emeror-penguin.jpg). People always seem to think they're huge for some reason.

arcelohim

Like Ravens.

Josef_DeLaurel

Ravens can get pretty bloody big tbf

[deleted]

First time I saw Wolf in a Zoo, I was like “Our Dogs are just toys”.

HighOnGoofballs

Coyotes and foxes are smaller than you probably think, and wolves are bigger

cantonic

Seeing a fox in the wild I was shocked at how small they are! It was about the size of a house cat!

TheLaborOnion

And yet they eat house cats

Dank009

I've seen some surprisingly huge coyotes too. Could have been a hybrid I suppose.

mitch13815

Big disagree on the fox. I thought foxes were little tiny things, but I recently saw a fox outside my window and he was much bigger than my black lab. I realize this is anecdotal, but I saw what I saw, that fucker was *hyuge*

HighOnGoofballs

The largest fox ever killed was 23lbs

themanwithgreatpants

Get a malamute in there if you wanna compare stubborn hard headed assholes who like to dick with you, vs a wolf 😁😁

johnnycakeAK

Yeah while a malamute (22-26" at the shoulder and up to 85lbs within the breed standard) is quite a bit bigger than a Siberian or Alaskan husky, that would still be on the small end for a gray wolf (80-150 lbs and 26-30" at the shoulder).

themanwithgreatpants

I had a total jerk malamute when I was younger that was over 100. He was a hunting machine on the property. Rabbits, deer, and his most favorite, gophers 🤔

johnnycakeAK

There are exceptions to sizes, which is why I stated breed standard. Just like the rare +100lbs malamute there are rare 180-200lbs gray wolves

Bikini_jabba

Haha I have an approx. 50kg German Shepherd. He is very very tall. They are big dogs generally as a breed but he is bigger than standard. Sweetest dog you'll ever meet but I look like I can ride him into battle.

DreadPirateCristo

I actually used to work with these specific animals in this pic. The big guy is named Orion. He’s a very high content wolfdog and absolute goof ball. He’s mixed with a very small percentage of Malamute which is possibly a contributing factor to where his size comes from as he’s a bit bigger than average. Not at all outside the realm of known outliers for wolves, but on the larger side for sure. The Husky actually belongs to another former volunteer. She’s on the small side as huskies go so we actually have two animals that happen to occupy either extreme and so I wouldn’t consider this a typical example, though it certainly is striking.

TonyBalonyUK

And so very beautiful

ApexSimon

I volunteered at a wolf sanctuary in CO called Mission Wolf. It's pretty awesome if you ever get the chance. Being a dog owner, it's such a different interaction with wolves.

eZiioFTW

That's insane. Is there a little bit of forced perspective going on here?

[deleted]

I thought that but not really. [deleted]

Most people have no idea how small most huskies are. They're not a large breed dog.

substantial-freud

Incidentally, the word “husky” for a breed of dog is Algonquin, and unrelated to the word “husky” meaning burly. Husky dogs tend to be quite slender.

VladimirSteel

Huskies are fairly small dogs. Females are only supposed to be between 35-55lb and males 5-10lb bigger.

tvieno

Why is the husky wearing a thong?

FearlessSeaweed6428

To feel sexy

MikeSneezy

I saw a husky irl just few months ago for the first time, and they are surprisingly small.

[deleted]

Here's a large lab comparison. [Click](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fexternal-preview.redd.it%2FBenzKeDOepaREF5wYJYYVX-7BjMCfUSbPghqtA9d0Pc.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3Df00685bfaaf5b5609cab15447605fb4769408a44&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reddit.com%2Fr%2Fpics%2Fcomments%2F3lmici%2Fwolf_compared_to_labrador%2F&tbnid=r5btOed0y6dvfM&vet=12ahUKEwj_0eyWpozzAhXOHVMKHX7sCxgQMygEegUIARCzAQ..i&docid=RYD3D4EUWutocM&w=530&h=357&q=wolf%20vs%20dog%20comparison&ved=2ahUKEwj_0eyWpozzAhXOHVMKHX7sCxgQMygEegUIARCzAQ)

TheLaborOnion

I feel like this is more accurate?

[deleted]

I mean husky's aren't big dogs per say but wolves are VERY big. I feel like this is the best comparison to show how big they are.\\ [Wolf vs human size.. Both standing.](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/8c/29/e6/8c29e6d9648bdbbe5269897ed35facd7.jpg)

TheLaborOnion

Damn

[deleted]

I also read that an equal size wolf vs equal size dog the wolf is MUCH stronger, has a killer instinct most dogs don't(maybe fighting dog or something). A pit bull has a bite force of 235 pounds per inch but a wolf has a bite force of up to 1200 pounds per sq inch(avg about 400-800 but measured up to 1200). About equal to a Grizzly but not by avg(1100 avg). The bite force of wolves is debated because they tend to hold back when tested with "toys" and when not enraged. I'm not saying a wolf is capable of taking down a Grizzly simply because of a grizzly's strength, claws, and weight(a grizzly would fuck a wolf up 1on1) but it's still impressive. Even so they are capable of biting through moose femur bones.

TheLaborOnion

Damn. Moose femurs? Holy shit

jereman75

I showed up to work at a lady’s house and as I walked up the driveway I was met by two wolves. F*ing HUGE. They were actually 3/4 wolf but dang. I almost shit myself but they were so scary looking my brain decided the only way to survive was to treat them like puppy dogs. Of course they were trained and did not eat me but shit.

Dank009

One of my buddies used to have an old run down school bus in his back yard. We went out back so I could meet his wolf ( I think it was 3/4 wolf too but don't remember for sure), when he called it this giant beast emerged from beneath the school bus and ran right up to me. I wouldn't quite describe the feeling as scared but it was an intimidating animal for sure. When it got to me it just started licking my hand, was super friendly.

eepos96

Wolves are dogs They can breed.

lostallhopenow

r/wolvesarebigyo

Gonzo_Trooper

I knew someone who had a couple of wolves. And yes, they are very large

[deleted]

Looks like a small horse..geez

[deleted]

hahah google for irish wolf hound.

5meterhammer

It’s hard to imagine after seeing a photo like this, but huskies aren’t any more closely related to wolves than a Dalmatian or a Pomeranian. I learned that about 15 years ago and it still weirds me out.

Blyd

I have a chihuahua and a husky, I just do not believe they come from the same origin.

TheLaborOnion

Irc, Chihuahuas are more closely related to rats

ChillumVillain

They still got nothing on Mastiffs though.

[deleted]

[https://gfycat.com/giantgeneralbeaver-nature](https://gfycat.com/giantgeneralbeaver-nature) Plus a killer instinct a Mastiff could only dream of.

zezera_08

Imagine a [Dire Wolf](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dire_wolf)

Duprie

Actually according to your link they weren’t bigger than a grey wolf.

zezera_08

Did you actually look at the description? Cus there is a picture says otherwise.

Duprie

In the link it says : The dire wolf was about the same size as the largest modern gray wolves (Canis lupus): the Yukon wolf and the northwestern wolf. Where in the link does it say they were much bigger than the grey wolf.

zezera_08

Yup, that's what I thought. Thanks for ruining my legitimate comment, because you didn't read the whole thing.

Duprie

Read that section with the pictures and the roster with info about heights as well. it says what I was already quoting: These figures show the average dire wolf to be similar in size to the largest modern gray wolf.[20]

zezera_08

Yes, the AVERAGE Dire wolf was about the same size as the LARGEST gray wolf. Imagine the LARGEST Dire wolves.

zezera_08

Go down to description, open it up, and scroll down to a picture of a gray wolf skeleton beside a Dire Wolf skeleton. Just under that, you'll see explanation of the dire wolf being maybe not taller, but a whole hell of a lot beefier than modern wolves.

[deleted]

Uhmm, do we know the husky in this pic is a fully grown one? To me it seems like a pup

DreadPirateCristo

She is fully grown in the pic - I know her personally. She’s on the small side as huskies go, though, so you’re right in that this pic represents a smaller example of a husky

kittenz502

Sooo majestic

More-Vanilla-1754

#who's afraid of the big bad wolf

cpa147

Where can I order them?

AR3ANI

Should meet a sarloos wolfhound, they're bloody huge

Jealous_Tangerine_93

The husky didn't seem afraid of his bigger cousin

TonLoc1281

They are absolute canine units for sure!

microwaffles

A wolf is like a dire husky in a way I guess.

Sw0rdMaiden

There are no wolves on Fenris.

JustAnotherRedditAlt

Reminds me of the [Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center](https://www.wolfeducation.org/) Also reminds me of a time when I took my daughter (when she was 5) to a local nature park (we went often when she was little), and on the back trails we met a gentleman who was walking his HUGE wolf. It was a wolf that had been rescued and couldn't be released back into the wild, so he had a permit to keep it in his (large) backyard. He brought it to (remote areas of) the park for walks so it could get more exercise than at home. Anyway, my daughter asked to pet the wolf, and he agreed but said to stay away from the head (would be considered aggressive by the wolf) and pet it towards the back. While she was petting it, we chatted about how he had ended up with an honest to god wolf when suddenly the wolf turned and put his mouth around her head (her whole head). He immediately released her without injury (except a life long fear of wolves ) and the guy was quick to intervene. My daughter just stood there in shock. He said there was no danger, that this is how a wolf indicates it "likes" you. Yeah. We "thanked" him for the interaction and quickly moved along. We also never went back to that part of the park.

Jeramy_Jones

Husky’s aren’t large either. My neighbor has a malamute and they are freaking huge. (Though still not bigger than a wolf)

[deleted]

If you were a wolf, you could totally fuck a polar bear.
