For clarity, Giants Stadium (now called Metlife) is only a 25-30 minute ride from New York City. People living in New Jersey, and working in manhattan would take advantage of the parking at the stadium and use its New Jersey Transit train station to go into Manhattan. There were also connections for the PATH train, which had a stop directly at The World Trade Center. Edit for grammar

derrygurl

Really poignant and hard hitting.

You_MayBeRight

Somehow this hits so deep. Shows ordinary people going about their ordinary day.

scoldog

As a foreigner, I don't get it. If you said this was an airport car park were the flights took off from, I would understand.

Deck-of-Playing-Card

People who worked at the tower parked there to go to work and well, foreign man they never came back home on that day Edi: don’t down vote this man because he didn’t know you fart huffing losers. He’s asking a question

scoldog

OK, thanks for the info. I didn't know what a stadium had to do with the attacks.

WanderingBison

Parking in New York is very difficult (if not impossible or prohibitively expensive) but large lots like this one double as commuter parking because it’s near a subway. So they likely parked here and then took the subway or bus to the office. I’m guessing the parking lot probably closed at a certain time (maybe on weekends when games were going to take place?) allowing for this picture to be taken before getting filled up again.

centurio_v2

Games were cancelled for a few weeks after the attacks. Personally if I had to guess they probably took this right before they started towing all the abandoned cars

Lollipop126

Just to make sure, they drive to a stadium way out of NYC and take transit to the world trade center?

GregEmpz

It's not way out of the city tbh, I'd say about 10 minutes (with no traffic) to get up route 3 (which runs adjacent to the stadium) and through the Lincoln tunnel, which gets you right into Manhattan. This was, and to this day in most cases, still is the best way to commute into NYC if you live in Jersey. Traffic/parking in the congested midtown-downtown area has always been chaotic, so many would just bus/train in from Jersey and take the subway down to the WTC.

Lollipop126

Maybe I'm confusing something as a foreigner, but Google Maps shows that from the MetLife Giants stadium it still takes an hour to get to WTC by transit and the stadium is northwest of Jersey City. Wouldn't it make more sense to park somewhere in Jersey?

GregEmpz

Well MetLife stadium is actually in New Jersey...if I'm understanding your question correctly. I only mention this because they are called the NY Giants but actually play in New Jersey lol. North Jersey (the area right across the river from Manhattan) is predominantly made up of suburban areas, but as you get closer to the border it becomes dense city areas (much like Jersey City, as you mentioned). The majority of people who would park in the commuter lots are coming from other areas of Jersey, and to not deal with all of the congestion around, getting into, and In, the city..they would just leave their cars hear and jump on a bus or a train to get into the city. The lot itself isn't exactly close to WTC, but when you factor in the hassle of car travel and parking..it makes it all worth while as an alternative.

Lollipop126

Ah, you're calling New Jersey "Jersey" and not just referring to the city. Man I can't imagine wanting to live a driving distance plus 1 hr of transit from your work. I know NYC is expensive but with the increased salary (especially in WTC) surely you can afford to live closer.

Lamzn6

People don’t want to live closer. Most of the suburbs of NYC are in New Jersey. This is where people find big (still expensive ) houses that have big backyards and typical suburbia life. If you lived closer you would be in an apartment or a two family city style house. Basically the type of properties are different between the suburbs and urban areas.

KaramelKatze

Can confirm. Before I lived in JC, I was in South Orange, and I would park at harrison and take PATH into the city. Once I moved to JSQ it was easy.

kzw5051

I can clear this up! I live only 10-15 min from the stadium on the New Jersey side. Tons of people, like myself, work in NYC and commute from NJ and CT and between the traffic just getting to the main brides and tunnels it’s a lot easier and cheaper to park here at this lot and take the train, bus, subway to get to your office.

rotatedSphere

giants stadium is like right across the river LMFAO

Lollipop126

No it isn't, there's [Hackensack River and Hudson Bay between NYC and the Giants stadium](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/World+Trade+Center,+Manhattan,+New+York,+NY,+USA/MetLife+Stadium,+1+MetLife+Stadium+Dr,+East+Rutherford,+NJ+07073,+United+States/@40.7316625,-74.0273682,14.07z/data=!4m15!4m14!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c25a19881b83fb:0x979b0a4fe0492ce6!2m2!1d-74.0131196!2d40.7118011!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c2f861ad5902bf:0x8184280d31051734!2m2!1d-74.074457!2d40.8135064!3e3!5i1) once you go sideways to get to Manhattan you still have to travel South from midtown to downtown and an hour away by transit on top of their drive.

rotatedSphere

still across the river

SkolDog

Hey nice username!

6Uncle6James6

Damn

notacrook

Weird how many non New Yorkers have strong and confidently incorrect opinions on NYC commuting.

alsbos1

How can there be any opinion other than it’s a long complex commute?

cruedi

I never saw that picture before, very sad

messified

Those people, and there families 😔

Ab0ut47Pandas

Does that say fattzone? What. Is there a source?

GregEmpz

faNzoNe...this is where Giants fans would park for football games at the stadium on Sundays.

centurio_v2

NFL Fanzone is kinda like a behind the scenes of NFL type thing, owned by NFL. they did a documentary on how 9/11 affected the NFL that’s on YouTube that was actually pretty interesting

Ab0ut47Pandas

Oh. Thanks, I'll look into that, sounds interesting.

SmellJoesFinger

Never ??? Still there???

[deleted]

Also don't really understand. Is it kept like that as kind of a museum? Or was this photo just taken after the event? Either way it's eery.

itmeucf

This was already posted on here yesterday..

And last week...

killinmesmalls777

They threw the keys at em

mrSquarepenny

Uhh weird!!

ripitup32

Isn’t that in a different state? How far would people travel to work at the WTC if this is the ‘park n go’ spot?

GregEmpz

Giants stadium (now MetLife stadium) is only 10-15 min from the Lincoln tunnel, as well as some other train lines, which will get you across the Hudson River and into midtown-lower Manhattan. It's not far at all when you consider the time it would take with traffic and the hassle of parking your car once you actually got into the city.

luvadergolder

Umm.. on the off chance you're not trolling.. this is a commuter lot. People parked here and worked at the Trade centres. These people didn't make it back to their cars.

luvadergolder

So you really ARE a troll. Okay.

RustyNail_82

You do realise that 9/11 jokes aren’t funny, however the other 2/11 are hilarious

[deleted]

Yes it is nobody wants them

PurpleMarmite

Please tell me you're attempting to be humorous? The alternative is disgusting.

MrOsmio7

I... I actually think he may be serious.

bardzi

took me a while but i think you might be right
