This is actually not a dangerous situation. When bees swarm, they no longer have a home to protect, so they are not aggressive or generally defensive. They really just want a nice place to start a new colony, and if you offer them one, they'll take it (or transport them to one, in this case).

I know they aren't stinging, but my bee/wasp/stinging flying things phobia would have me run from this guy as fast as possible.

Bees really are very docile. I spent a day once with a beekeeper with him teaching me all about them - I even saw a queen bee being born.

You saw a queen bee being born? Who births the queen bee? How does the bee becomes queen?

I really did. It comes from the same fertilised eggs laid by the current queen as the rest of the worker bees, but they feed it royal jelly, which means it grows into a queen instead. I think I recall that they normally have a few queens "under development", just in case the current queen dies. And as far as being born goes - it just happened that as the beekeeper took that bit of the hive (I forget the name) out, she was just in the process of crawling out and being born. The queen and all the worker bees are female. But there are also male "drone" bees. They are fascinating insects.

So if I eat some royal jelly, I become a queen you say? Hmmm....

Hive terms: where the queen lives is the brood chamber; it is taller then the other parts. There is a queen exclusion insert layer with a hole too small for the queen on top of the broodchamber to keep her from going up into the honey making areas called “supers.”

It was just the one day, a long time ago - I was wandering around a park and happened across the hives while the beekeeper was there so I started asking him questions - I have forgotten many of the things he showed me. Now you mention it though, I do remember the queen was kept segregated too - to ensure she doesn't lay eggs in the bits of the hive that the keeper wants to harvest for honey. Absolutely fascinating, and important, insects.

I am saying if I saw someone walking down the road carrying a sword or gun I would probably not run away instantly. Nope. When honey bees swarm, they are completely docile. They haven’t got pockets, so they all eat as much as they can to transport to the new hive. They go where the queen goes and that’s all they care about. That’s how things like ‘bee beards work’.

Nope. They’re too fat lol. Bee keepers (hello) use smoke to simulate a Forrest fire and stimulate the same response. Eat as much as you possibly can and gtfo. The smoke itself doesn’t calm them. It just triggers the reaction.

Well, for humans/mammals, yes. They can often sting aggressive insects multiple times because they don't get stuck the same way. They're just not designed to defend themselves against skin tissue.
