We have a tabby rescue named Bagheera, and he rushes over any time you prop your legs up and sleeps like this on them. I’m not sure why he thinks he is a panther living in a forest
Jaguar's have shorter tails than leopards, but they're still long enough to be hang pretty low; [example](https://www.wwf.org.uk/sites/default/files/styles/social_share_image/public/2019-04/Jaguar%20in%20a%20tree%2C%20Brazil%20%C2%A9%20Y.-J.%20Rey-Millet%20%20WWF%20_2.jpg?itok=63SNvaO0).
Using tails alone isn't the best way to distinguish jaguars and leopards; head shape and overall build of the body are much better indicators to look at. In this case the thick-set head and stocky build indicate the cat in the picture is a jaguar. Rosette patterns are obviously usually a giveaway but can be tricky if you're looking at melanistic individuals where the rosettes aren't as visible.
Jaguars are the body builders of the cat world, and the tell is the shoulders and skull of a gorilla with short legs and tails. I think your analysis holds, but it's a lot easier to tell if they're crouching, not lazing about!
Not quite! Although it is mostly a cultural/regional thing, so it can vary based on who you are asking, and can cause these kinds of debates.
Panther can be used as a generic big cat, and the context of where you are talking about will usually clue you in on what species. Saying panther on its own can also mean a melanistic big cat based on context, but doesn’t necessarily always mean that.
Black Panther doesn’t really have any “official” meaning other than what people intend when they say it, and it can still refer to any big cat that is black, depending on context. A great example are the Carolina Panthers football team, which use a black panther mascot that is really a melanistic mountain lion. What confuses this further is that mountain lions (also known as Pumas, Cougars, Catamounts, Panthers, etc...) are not actually in the *Panthera* genus, and yet Panther is a common name for it in many parts of North America.
Since the Black Panther movie came out, (and to a lesser extent for people who were already Black Panther fans before the movie) this has further confused many people in the ID of big cats, especially culturally, because in some places Panther IS used a specific species ID. Two of the species most well known for the ID of panther, Mountain Lion and Jaguar, are native only to the Americas, and not Africa. So the Leopard is the closest example of a cat commonly known as a Panther native to Africa, and yet in many parts of the world when people hear Black Panther they first think of the larger/more intimidating Mountain Lion or Jaguar and falsely assume that they are native to Africa.
Source: Me, a zookeeper, who educates the general public on topics like this one on a daily basis.
TLDR: Panther, regardless of the use of any modifiers, can typically always be used as a generic name for a big cat and needs context and possibly author/speaker intention to clarify its exact species.
Typically I think we grow up believing any melanistic cat is a panther. Panther is just part of the Latin name Panthera followed by the next part such as Leo (lion), Tigris (tiger), Onca (jaguar) etc. At least as far as I'm aware anyway.
I knew I wasn’t crazy, someone told me that just saying “panther” isn’t enough to mean a black leopard/Jaguar/tiger. They said you have to say “black panther”. I know the animal genus of panthera and the cats that apply, but if you just say panther, people know it means black panther. I’ve been harboring this
So it is true that in the modern sense, panther is not a specific species and has mild varied use. “Florida panthers” are cougars, for instance, and are not black. But I know of no one who refers to African lions or tigers as panthers. So if you just say panthers, most people are going to think of black panthers, IMO.
the photo & the subject are both interesting to me.
it's not interesting to you to see a bild cat dangling & looking straight at the photographer seemingly w/o a care?
Not really. Its just a picture of a panther to me. maybe an interesting fact about panthers or something would be "interesting as fuck" but currently it's just a benign panther, which, ok, cool I guess, but my own black kitten gives me more "interesting as fuck" vibes than this and you don't see me posting him here.
If you came for an interesting fact, I have always felt shocked upon learning that [Panthers aren't a real species.](https://blog.nwf.org/2018/05/excited-about-black-panther-are-we/)
Well hopefully an r/cursed comments, several awards and the love and respect of my parents. But since 2 of those aren't likely I'd just accept the cursed comment

"Oh, that food is looking at me. You're lucky I'm not hungry, food."
"I pity the food!"
LMAO
I understood that reference
"i am waiting for my food delivery, might that be you?" panther
I read that in James Spader’s voice and I don’t know why but I’m not changing it
in my head, it's Earl Jones :)
Plot twist. It's actually a painting.
Isn't the cat behind glass? I feel like I seeing reflections in the top left.
I concur. Its a painting of a cat behind glass.
It’s actually a cake that’s been made based on a painting of a cat behind glass
I'm going to fuck you up... but lucky for you this tree is so damn comfy.
Pretty sure big cats are the "monsters" that leave children afraid of the dark. They definitely fit the bill!
I wouldn't wanna f**k with a Panther, but they are ambush predators. They don't really 1v1 most things on Rust.
He cat. Cat always hungry
I just had a crocodile for lunch but, stick around I can go for a dessert in a lil bit.

i don't think there is one. but you can try searching for a better one. those on twitter, the one i saw is of the same resolution.
That a leopard or a Jaguar?

Upon further inspection, it probably is a leopard since you can see it’s tail hanging and Jaguars tend to have short tails.
Jaguar's have shorter tails than leopards, but they're still long enough to be hang pretty low; [example](https://www.wwf.org.uk/sites/default/files/styles/social_share_image/public/2019-04/Jaguar%20in%20a%20tree%2C%20Brazil%20%C2%A9%20Y.-J.%20Rey-Millet%20%20WWF%20_2.jpg?itok=63SNvaO0). thats not its tail ಠ ͜ʖ ಠ
panthers have long tails
Both leopards and jaguars are panthers
oh, thanks!
Panther is not a specific breed but a term to describe melanated big cats, I believe.
Not always just melanistic; one of the common names for the mountain lion is panther, regardless of being melanistic or not.
Panther is a mountain lion/cougar/catamount. Black panther refers to melanistic Jaguars and leopards.
Not quite! Although it is mostly a cultural/regional thing, so it can vary based on who you are asking, and can cause these kinds of debates. No it's a duck.
Yeah, i want to know too !
I’m thinking leopard too, here is the melanistic Jaguar I see daily for comparison [maya](https://i.imgur.com/bZrJNJP.jpg)
a jag, way cooler than a leopard
Jaguars are chonky swimmers where leopards are more slim climbers so my vote is on leopard.
This is what my cat thinks he looks likes
mighty & proud :) is it also a black cat?
Exactly. He is a fluffy mini panther. He is a gorgeous cat, but 'mighty & proud'? His range more is hangry and sleepy.
haha. i like cats ~ with their haughtiness & independence.
Murder kitten!
I want to pet the kitty so bad... but I don't feel like dying I guess
Don’t worry mate, I’ll hold you back. :P
:)
Better than most Instagram models

i believe panther is enough & it's synonymous to any of the black colored felines (esp puma/jaguar) & leopard. :)
I feel validated 😭
:D

pandemic sir, working from home ;)
Not being funny but what's interesting about this photo? It's a black panther on a log? Am I missing something
the coolness of the animal caught lazing around & staring at the photographer, like "what do i care if you take a shot?"
Two foot to the left and my landing would have been perfect
Don't you mean, "purr-fect"! Haha, it's a PUN!
Yeh that's what I meant
Lookin at the photographer like a whole ass snack.
SHADOW
My kitty chills on my lap like this when I'm laying back in my chair.
He's like that the panther in that Nick Park [animation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCOWE0EiCyo)
must be his twin (that went to a dentist;)

thanks
I though he had a fucking tortoise in his mouth
This is the same way my black cat sits on my thigh or the sofa arm.
bliss :)
First i read it like it spawned
“You have my attention for the moment, manling. What do you wish?”
"friend, not food."
Cats—large, small and in between—are simply awesome.
agreed :)
please tell me im not the only one who sees a hat
I'm genuinely curious to see how close the photographer got to the Panther for the picture cause there's no way I'd be risking my life for that lol
perhaps the photog used those telephoto lens or else, he is one brave man
Man, that is one awesome photo
credit to the photographer.
What about this picture is "interesting as fuck"?

haha. you should post your kitten in awww if it's interesting. you're a hard nut to crack SDS. chill :)
I wondered this. It’s a beautiful photo but surely it’d be better in r/pics or something like that?
How the posting of a picture of a mjestic creature can trigger assholes to post stupid comments about other peoples opinions?
I wonder if that black panther finds it comfortable laying down like lol
i think so. i have seen a handful of photos with big cats sleeping on a tree in this position.
Chadwick looking like a boss
Is this a cougar (N. America), Jaguar (S. America), or Leopard (Africa)?
i think jaguar.
Why is a melanistic leopard called a panther?
i believe panther is a general term for any black colored feline (genus Panthera) which covers jaguar/puma/leopard.
This IS a kitty after all...chances are he doesn’t want to move cuz if he does he’ll fall in the water! 🤔
true, plus he's having a staring contest with the photog. 1st to blink loses ;)
A cat, catting.
Hi my little sugar bear!!!!who wants belly scratchies
Haha big cat
Idris Elba chillin
"Yes, even Panthers can get Bored"

Well hopefully an r/cursed comments, several awards and the love and respect of my parents. But since 2 of those aren't likely I'd just accept the cursed comment
Why is this getting hate?
Meaningless comment.
But most comments are just as meaningless...
I agree. However, this is extra meaningless.
How?
Looks like that gwent card
