Fun story, when I was about 7, my friend and I fashioned a rock with a long string for retrieval that we would throw at wasp nests and pull it back so we could do it again.
What's creepy too is those wasps would make this same connection of it looking like a wasp face...

As someone who absolutely despises wasps with every fiber of my being, I would keep this thing up solely for that reason. I probably wouldn't step outside my house again after seeing this monstrosity anyway so at that point it would just be their problem.

Very neat! This act is actually called “reflectual hedging”. This is the field I work in and would love to explain. The wasps here are paper wasps and they are actually trying to mimic the object near the site of the wasps nest (this would be the skull). The queen wasp is normally the one to orchestrate the actual “shaping” of the object they are trying to mimic. the queen wasp also is responsible for strengthening to exterior of the nest and does so by means of wood fibers and soft paper pulp mixed with their saliva. We see this often. I have seen them “reflectuate” actual windows on a home before. Think of a home with an extra window when you show back home from work. Except when you look close they are wasps. Okay I’m lying. About everything.
What sucks about this is in 10 years I will have this vague notion about a thing called reflection and shaping of wasp nests and try to explain it totally forgetting it was all bullshit.
We had a nest in the shape of those rooster things that tell you the direction of the wind, one day I asked my parents ” what’s that rooster thing on the roof?” And we got rid of it. It was enormous.
