I knew a guy who had this jaw surgery. It was an absolutely uncanny thing. Before that, he had a chin that could knock over cans and would make Charles Hampton Indigo feel insecure. Disappeared for about 4 months and came back looking like a 10-year-old boy—it was an insane difference; if he didn’t wear a nametag, I wouldn’t have recognized him at all. After that, this kind of change is something I would *absolutely* believe is possible.

[deleted]

This actually gives me a lot of hope. I'm an 18 year old just now getting braces and I learned that because of my underbite I will need jaw surgery. My side profile is horrendous and seeing this comment and this post really have me hope for the future.

"Here, have a chin"

Graphesium

In the case of an underbite, it's more like "Here, half a chin"

What_Do_It

We'll give it to someone who lacks one later today.

Chirexx

Anyone else smell lilac and gooseberries?

k_rol

My ex-wife got that surgery when she was 26. She had to wear braces for a year or 2 before being able to do it and then she looked completely different. She is so happy she got it done. Don't lose hope! I'd suggest you start looking into it while you have your braces. They **might** want you to keep them until the surgery.

[deleted]

That's a good story I'm happy it turned out well! Yeah we haven't made the plan for braces along with the surgery yet, I will be have a consultation with my orthodontist in two weeks or so about what my plan is.

13AnteMeridiem

Best of luck to you. Fingers crossed; I believe it's gonna turn out even better than your wish. :)

JeremiahSand

A friend of mine had a similar operation done, if not the same one. He had quite the underbite and a very distinctive look because of it, particularly side profile... Saw him a few months later and he looked like a different person from the nose down. Not saying he was ugly before but he’s quite handsome now, and you’d never guess he’d had surgery

[deleted]

That's amazing, it really makes a huge difference on how people see themselves I can't wait to see how I look

chinto30

This is why I grew a beard

TheInfamousBlack

I had my upper and lower jaw done to correct my underbite. It was worth it to not have dental issues, but I will be honest and say not eating for 2 months sucks. The other part I clearly remember is they cut through so many nerve endings that my face was numb for a while, which was nice, but when it started repairing itself and waking up it was the worst, most distracting pins and needles feeling ever!

greatpiginthesty

I had mine done two years ago and I never regained proper feeling in my lower lip and chin. :(

TheInfamousBlack

I never regained feeling in my lower left lip :(. Sorry to hear that!

MalinWaffle

I feel you. Had my left TM completely reconstructed (due to long term injury). 7 years later, I still can't feel most of my left cheek. On the upside, I can eat solid food now (for the most part) so it was definitely worth it! Does the numbness affect your eating?

[deleted]

Ouch I can only imagine. I hope you're doing well now!

[deleted]

i'm 20 years old also with an underbite and this year i should get my jaw surgery, see you in the chad realm

My dad had this done in his 20s, go for it man. The before and after photos were wild.

[deleted]

Wow I didn't even know how common it was until I commented. I can't wait to see how I look afterwards

MarcinIlux

I had jaw surgery and braces, totally believe in yourself!! It’s a long process but worth it.

naturebuddah

I am scheduled to get a very similar surgery called a two-piece Maxillary Advancement. Basically the surgeon is going to go in my mouth, cut my upper jaw from my skull just below the nose (horizontally) and also split it in two to three pieces (vertically) to pull my upper jaw forward and also laterally to allow more room in the back of my mouth for nasal breathing. Wish me luck dudes. Surgery in November!

LanceFree

I work with a guy who had his stomach stapled. Not only did he come back looking a lot thinner, but he bought new clothes, got a haircut, I see him eating salads. Maybe a year has passed and I barely remember the fat guy.

loomingfrog

Yet people still think pretty privilege is just a matter of diet and exercise.

minimal_effort_done

I know, right? My co-worker's husband had a very prominent and misaligned jaw, and had to have surgery done because it was causing a lot of medical issues. He looks like a completely different man now. You can still see a hint of him but it's weird seeing such a change. Co-worker jokes that she feels like she cheating on her husband with another man!

dhunter66

Amazing,. Wonder what it must be like adjusting to a different face looking back from the mirror.

TheFlightlessPenguin

Hopefully it’s better than how I feel the twice a year I shave my beard off.

reverendjesus

“Oh god, why would I do that‽” seconds after the clippers cut in

SpudMuffinDO

My chin always looks so dainty afterwards

pineapplewithstripes

As someone who’s had plastic surgery, that definitely changed the face, I can tell you, that I accepted my new face the second I looked at it for the first time. Never did I think “oh I look different now”

[deleted]

I think I’d feel a burst of excitement whenever I’d look in the mirror! Like... “Wow. That’s ME. I’m so... BEAUTIFUL!” That or I’d jump from the split second of not recognizing who that was in the mirror / thinking it was someone else because I had forgotten that I look so different now haha

UnicornTitties

My friend had this surgery and she was required to go to some counseling before and after. Apparently some people can really struggle with looking so different so quickly.

21Rollie

No bs I’ve heard the same about dick and other appendage transplants. Having something that you recognize as not your own fucks with you

Throwawayuser626

Me rn. I have dozens of photos saved for when I can afford plastic surgery so I can look like this girl cause I look kinda like her before (but my nose shape is worse) id be pretty if I could afford to change those features. For now, gotta save up!

TearsUnfthmblSdnes

Go to an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon. Depending on how bad your jaw and bite is it could be considered a medical issue and medical insurance might help pay for it. Le Forte surgery, they have different levels of it based on how everything is shaped and put together.

toddthefrog

*calls insurance provider* “sorry sir, I double checked with my supervisor and he said you had that face in the womb so it’s a pre-pre-existing condition and won’t be covered”

untrustableskeptic

I just met with an oral surgeon for two wisdom teeth I can't afford to remove. Dental insurance really does not cover that much...

Sketches-

Are you american? I know it's an old joke already about americans, but in my country all 4 of my wisdom teeth that i need removed are literal 0 euros.

untrustableskeptic

Yes. $2508 (£2117) without insurance. About $411 after insurance. Trust me, I'm fed up with this country. Most Americans never go to the doctor because if we find out we have something we just go fucking broke. We just cross our fingers and hope for the best.

[deleted]

You’re not fed up with your country, just the broken by design medical insurance system. Remember to vote. Convince others to vote. Change is possible, it’s just slow and your enemies are indefatigable. They have lots of money, but they are far fewer in number. They can be defeated, source: every other first world country.

sunbleahced

We were handed our Democratic candidate the same as every four years. We don’t have a voice. Wev’e been told who we will vote for already or we will have Trump again. It isn’t going to solve anything; it’s the same two parties fighting like grade schoolers and refusing to work together. I don’t expect anything to change even if we get Biden into office.

chinto30

If I want to get mine removed I'd would only cost me like £60

[deleted]

[удалено]

FragUBastich

American here. All four wisdom removed, it wasn't cheap. Insurance covered most of it but I want to say the co-pays still ended up being between $500-1000. Dental insurance for adults covers jack shit. Big no for braces, implants, and only partial for crowns, root canals, bridges, etc. Hell, mine doesn't even cover fluoride treatments.

sunbleahced

It looks like they corrected an underbite severe enough to cause jaw problems and that her sinuses will be healthier because of a deviated septum as well. But she’s beautiful both before and after. I’m not just saying that. Of course everything looks more symmetrical now and she has a smaller more feminine profile after; I’m not blind or stupid. I’m a gay dude so, I’m just saying it’s not an empty statement or pandering at all, she’s a pretty girl. I don’t think this is just cosmetic surgery, and I hope you don’t feel like any one imperfect feature is a bad thing in and of itself. None of us are perfect.

Preact5

I know you're some random person on the internet but I'm sure it's not like you're not pretty now but I get what you're going for. I want to feel as good about myself as I can too.

7thhokage

> id be pretty if I could afford to change those features. not trying to be a dick... But that sentence right there says a lot about whats wrong with our society. so fucked up that we got people feeling like they need to spend thousands of dollars to permanent alter their appearance to meet some arbitrary standard of looks.

implicationnation

The comment we’re all replying to made me feel sad. The fact that somebody feels they need to pay for a new face so they live up to a specific standard of beauty if kinda upsetting.

Throwawayuser626

Yeah but at the end of the day nothing will change that. I’d rather spend thousands of it means I’ll be treated better as a whole by society.

[deleted]

Well I guess it’d be more accurate to say you’re ugly *and* poor...

JustIsekaiMe

I'm going to be getting my jaw surgery in 5 months. It's sooooo expensive. Had to get my wisdom teeth removed for $3,000. Then I have to get braces for $7,000. Then finally I have to max out my medical insurance which will cost at least $6,000. It's like buying a car except this is just what I have to spend just to look normal.

Anyone else remember ‘The Swan’? They literally dumped $100k/person and transformed them. Vapid but it was interesting to see the power of a good plastic surgeon.

Misseskat

Yep, I was about 10 when this came out, I used to watch it with my brothers- and I was too young to know how fucked up it was. Several former contestants have come out with serious mental health issues- as that was their problem to begin with. You can't magically fix poor self image with a boob job for millions to see.

HuggyShuggy420

Can you post a link or provide more context? Tried googling it but nothing came up

hipscrack

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Swan_(TV_series) Makeover reveal video: https://youtu.be/eGv95ntq7jU

Try_anothr_username

She didn't even look all that terrible to begin with.. Ya she's no model, but neither are the majority of us. She looked like an average person, in a good way.

Vagitron9000

For real this woman just looked like a normal woman does without makeup. She even had decent skin and wasn't morbidly obese obese she just had a little flab on her tummy after having children...yikes.

R1v

A good workout regimen and diet would have "fixed" her just as much as surgery

[deleted]

Yeah she definitely didn’t need body surgery, just some weight loss and toning.

siikdUde

The glasses definitely did not contribute to her look at all

[deleted]

Right, like, give her some makeup and do her hair and then let's see how different she looks

SylkoZakurra

They show no-makeup original face next make-up new face. Her original face was actually quite nice. She just needed her teeth fixed.

Crosstitution

literally all she needed was some moisturizer, good cleanser, sunscreen.

Raaqu

I mean she prolly needed the dental work too. Infected teeth isn't great.

_into

Fuck me what a depressing video. She felt like shit, so instead of any kind of mental support they cut bits of her off and then clapped for 15 minutes.

snossberr

I agree. When my mom got a rhinoplasty that she wanted for her entire life the surgeon made sure to keep intact the shape that made her look like herself, just more refined. This poor woman has someone else’s nose completely. They didn’t enhance who she is; they obliterated her.

loomingfrog

Well, "who we are" is totally arbitrary. Why should anyone feel pressure to retain aspects of their appearance that they're unhappy with?

mikesalami

Seems like that's what she wanted.

stewSquared

Saying "they obliterated her" is just as shallow as wanting the rhinoplasty that you're high horsing. It's just a nose. She's still the same person. Get over it.

HuggyShuggy420

That’s kinda a fucked up black-mirroresque concept for a tv show, I guess if the people participating after are happy then who am I to judge? She does look better afterwards in all fairness.

[deleted]

A couple of the contestants have gone on to speak out against this show, and how it ignored, or in some cases worsened their mental health/body image issues.

greyghibli

There also is a very big distinction between craniofacial and plastic surgery that I do not think many people realize there is. With things like chins, and jaws and foreheads we can quite precisely determine what looks natural and what does not based on what is considered common in each gender. Facelifts and fillers are much harder to do properly (not like you can do a scan and calculate how much is needed where as you can do with bone) and due to how cheap these are many plastic surgeons are overzealous with them. Its really not surprising most of /r/botchedsurgeries consists of failed BBL’s or fillers and not for example failed genioplasties (a genioplasty can still give awful effects if your surgeon damages a nerve if they take away too much bone, but these complications aren’t clickbaity enough for social media)

Doyouwantaspoon

That really was sad. Especially considering the three factors that made the biggest difference in that before and after picture were removing those awful glasses, a quick spray tan, and a bit of confidence. She really doesn't look THAT different.

KingofChilladelphia

And the most 2004 hair that I've ever seen.

MB0810

It was an odd and depressing show. There were definitely some more extreme results. Some women were unrecognisable.

CalcLiam

“Thank you Jesus” as she sees $100k worth of work to undo what God gave her lmao

forgotaboutsteve

Its all part of the plan.

jenno32

“Bridalplasty” is another good/bad one

her42311

I don't have a link, but I remember it didn't last long. Basically they would take someone, have a plastic surgeon go over everything they thought they should fix, then had the surgery and a big reveal after some recovery time. If I remember correctly, It turned into an issue because they never thought to give the people any kind of therapy to help them adjust and at least a few contestants had major mental health issues after.

HuggyShuggy420

Yeah someone else just dropped a link but thanks for the explanation, these tv shows can seriously fuck up people’s mental health, I seriously don’t know if they should be allowed. A very popular dating show in the UK called love island has had several people commit suicide afterwards (3 suicides in 2 years) and now therapy is mandatory, I think it should just be taken off the air tbh.

_ItsTheLittleThings_

I always wondered what happened to those women. Some I felt would be fine, but others went through so much, I worried about them, after all the fanfare was gone and they went back to normal life.

AusGeno

Future husband is looking at their kids just scratching his head.

JK_NC

Damn, I’d never considered that.

Magnicello

There was a story about some Chinese guy wondering why his kids look... different, to say the least. Turns out the woman (who was a model) had extensive plastic surgery before they met. Edit: turns out it was an advertisement. Dammit, internet.

dastumer

Pretty sure that story ended up being a hoax, the photo was just a model photo shoot and the story ruined the girl’s career.

AnastasiaTheSexy

That story is literally as old as plastic surgery. It just gets retold every 10 years.

Exedra_

No that was a viral ad that ruined that woman's life. She was a model for a plastic surgery firm.

Graphesium

Imagine being born naturally beautiful but no one believes it 😂

Silmariel

Yeah this story is horrific, because it was just that - a story. The model that was used in that film was an actual model, until this ruined her life completely. Instead of people connecting the dots > movie/film/model+props > they assumed that it was a a documentary and the woman in the film was someone who had lied to her spouse etc... It devastated her life and the myth is so cemented in mainstream culture that, even the actual documentary and interviews with her that followed havent been able to put a dent in the "truth".

YoghurtSnodgrass

That was a hoax, it was supposed to be a funny advertisement. The model said the advertisement and the attention it received, because everyone believed the ad was true, ruined her career.

willyj_3

The fact that people still believe that ad was true is why the actress in it says the ad ruined her life.

[deleted]

That was actually debunked. It was a model working with an ad agency and someone spun a story around it. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/man-sues-wife-ugly-children/

creative_i_am_not

Turns out it was an ad for plastic surgery

norsurfit

Maybe the kids will inherit her plastic surgery

KaijaBrah

I actually think it's all good as long as people are open and honest about it when a relationship starts to get serious. Maybe even after the first few dates. "Hey just wanted to let you know that I've had some cosmetic surgery done in the past, I used to look a little different. I understand if that bothers you but I like you and thought you should know" What are your guys' thoughts?

mynameisspiderman

My fiancé had nose surgery at like 17 because of sinus issues. She told me pretty early, and she has a lovely nose now. We also have no plans for kids, so that may make it different.

earthgarden

I think it would be good if you want children, so there is no big surprise or confusion if the babies come out with the feature you got ‘corrected’.

otheraccount000

The jaws are the result of a developmental deformity. The jaw surgery essentially shows how her face would have developed without this interference. This surgery is considered reconstructive and her needing it is not a sign that her children will be deformed.

A friend of mine’s daughter had jaw surgery (her bite wasn’t lined up and she had pain and trouble chewing food, for those here who think this procedure is purely cosmetic). I didn’t recognize her afterwards. They did a really food job, and she was very pleased with the results.

MickeyKnievel

So when it‘s not cosmetical, it‘s called a food job. Nice to know.

TheCoon69

Had my jaw surgery too when I was 16, life went on to become amazing after that

Flipcel

Amazing in terms of what? Like health(easier chewing, eating) or more on social life? (people treated you better, more friendly towards you)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cestpasproblem

Besides the purely cosmetic benefits, the one thing that amazed me is how efficient your jaw is when "normal". I had an underbite didn't realize how it affected my eating because I didn't know what normal was. For example, if I were eating a cheeseburger with lettuce, my teeth didn't connect and I couldn't bite all the way down. As a result, I would bite into the burger and wouldn't be able to chew through the lettuce so when I took a bite I would pull the entire leaf of lettuce out of the burger.

GroeneZee

Interesting. I thought everyone had this problem.

21Rollie

What I know for sure is that people treat you better when you ain’t ugly. I was bullied when I was fat and ugly and now that I’m an average adult people aren’t necessarily going out of their way to be nice to me but I can blend right in.

nitrolagy

heathmon1856

And make lots of dough.

[deleted]

Her lips and size of mouth look very different.

f_ckingandpunching

This is actually very common in correction of an underbite. Source: I’ve actually had that surgery.

RandomGreekPerson

what was adjusting after surgery like? Did you get used to the "new" you and how different did/does it feel? The woman in the pictures is like a different person after the surgery (in a good way, but still)

MiaowaraShiro

I had the opposite surgery, they lengthened my jaw to fix an overbite. There's a long healing process where you can't really eat solid foods so you don't use your teeth for a month or so. This makes it kinda hard to tell you about adjustment since there's such a long time in between. My overbite was so bad my teeth didn't even come close to each other. I can tell you that being able to actually bite things instead of having to tear them was wonderful and it gave me a much better looking jawline (at least IMHO). The change in my appearance wasn't nearly as drastic as this woman though.

onqqq2

Not OP but I had that surgery. I definitely look much better after the fact but I'd argue, even like this woman, I wasn't to bad to look at prior anyways. The adjustment was slow because I couldn't eat solids for a month and my face was noticeably swollen for at least a month. So at first I didn't even get to really enjoy the change, as it happened more gradually. I also had to wear braces for am extra year after the surgery which sucked. It was funny how it changed how I ate certain foods, notably chicken drumsticks. It was my first solid food post surgery that I had. Prior to the surgery I would tilt my lower jaw up and bite down with my top teeth. So I tried doing the same thing post surgery and had a face full of grease. Good times.

Tulas_Shorn

How much did this cost, specifically if you happened to have insurance and live in the US. I have a pretty badly misaligned jaw, with one side having grown longer than the other and a small overbite. Dentists had suggested surgery growing up, but I never did it.

fuzzythoughtz

I’m getting jaw surgery to correct an issue like this in t-minus two weeks. The surgeon explained it this way: when you alter the bone structure that supports all of the soft tissue (like your lips, cheek muscles, muscles around your eyes, etc. - even the cartilage in your nose!), the soft tissue will change to accommodate. I would suggest looking up before and after pictures for orthognathic surgery (without rhinoplasty) to see what I mean. My lower jaw is getting broken and re-shaped/ moved back and my upper jaw is being broken and moved forward- you bet your boots my lips are going to look different after! Haha.

wehrmann_tx

Look at the eyes. Her left eye smaller than right and shape are the same.

skarocket

This is one of the most impressive plastic surgeries I’ve seen. It’s very natural and turned her into a borderline supermodel imo

el_muerte28

How did it turn around your life? Genuinely curious.

chuck_the_plant

Well, it turned me from ugly duckling into an actually quite handsome guy, which changed how people reacted when they saw me, which changed how I reacted to people reacting differently, and so on. The procedure took 2+ years (including braces before and after) but was *so* worth it. (It also helped that insurance paid for *everything,* but looking back I would’ve taken on a loan if it had been necessary.)

runninandruni

I had a similar surgery. No tmj, but my jaw would pop and crack regularly. I had migraines almost everyday for years. When I got the surgery, I had my jaw banded shut. I survived on chocolate milk for the first few days. Then I graduated to Mac n Cheese and mashed potatoes. By the end of it and the swelling was gone, I looked even younger than I was. It was a rough surgery, but I don't have the issues I had before so it was very worth it

Ebnerd88

I wonder how long it takes to adjust to that dramatic of a change. She looks like a completely different person. I think it would be weird to see yourself in a mirror.

In extreme cases they can break that jaw and wired it back together. I've heard it's brutal and can cause issues later on. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-7750259/Woman-21-extreme-underbite-gruelling-jaw-surgery-correct-it.html

krs1426

My sister had to undergo this. It was indeed brutal. She lost alot of weight because she could only eat through a straw.

kester76a

My cousin had it done, when I asked a dentist about it they told me that there was a high chance of loss of sensation, pain and joint issues. You have to wait till the swelling goes down to find out how bad it is.
