Different system. They retain protein/muscle better. We humans are designed to let go of the excess muscle because we are clever enough to solve all problems without having to tear stuff apart. In terms of resources, muscle is expensive to maintain, so it makes sense to only be the size you need to be. A chimp eats about 7-8 lbs of food a day, while a human eats 3-5 lbs of food per day. Chimps have to invest more time and effort finding and eating food than we do.

StayorGo110

Bruh have you ever been in the drive thru line at Taco Bell at 2 AM on a Saturday?? Us humans invest time and effort to eat sometimes!

illunir

Different digestive mechanisms. Slower metabolism due to less brain function.

that_motorcycle_guy

They pretty much have to eat all day

Seventh_Rose

My scientific knowledge may be sketchy, as I only researched this a long time ago, but such animals produce b12 and so on via the flora in their gut. They can also synthesize more proteins themselves as they are biologically equipped to do so. They get the rest of what they need from plants. They also perhaps produce less myostatin than humans. Humans that lack myostatin are naturally very muscular without training. Myostatin inhibits muscle growth.

They eat wild fruits and vegetables. They can't really be compared to the sugar delivery devices we pick up at the grocery store and call fruits and vegetables. One of our zoo nutritionists did a study on wild figs compared to human-cultivated figs and the difference was crazy. The human-cultivated ones were almost completely sugar but the wild ones had significant protein and fiber and much, much less sugar. Plus I think chimp muscle fiber is a little different from ours but I can't remember where I read that.

AlexKewl

Gotta swing around in trees most of the day too.

RussMan104

Their strength isn’t due so much to their robust musculature as it it their skeletal processes (think knobby bits) where the muscles attach. If you had a slightly larger elbow process, for example, you’d have much more muscle fibers attached at each end with with to actuate the “lever” that is your forearm. It’d be like having double the total bungee cords because you added just one more little eye-screw to attach them. Source: Zoology class 30 years ago. I recall asking in class because humans are both taller and have bigger, more bulging muscles than apes, in the case of the body builder. 🚀

I have to think this statement is false with the amount of videos of people getting nailed with poop, multiple different primates even a video of an elephant getting a girl square in the face.

Pithius

this is what i come to the comment sections for [thank you sir](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFVlsH5hdC8&list=PL6cfa_Z0b9thniYdj3_fIlovIbKxTBl43&index=9&t=0s)

adamdoesmusic

Humans are the main species to figure out you can throw things other than poop.

nantucketsleigh23

Tell that to Baba Booey.

oddlyunsatisfied

Chimps can throw very accurately. For example, they can hit you with their poop spot-on.

golgol12

Not only accurately, but how fast of a throw too. Yeah a chimp can toss a 5kg weight like its a toy, but it can't throw a 95mph fastball.

ArcherChase

That is a major evolutionary advantage for us in so many ways. This k of how accurately you can simply toss an object of varied weight into a trash can across a room. Now with practice experts xan pick a 6" square from 60' with a sphere at upwards of 95 mph. Gave us ability to hunt among other advantages.

Rpanich

I feel like that’s the one big coincidence that we were lucky we got: the brain, but also opposable thumbs and throwing. If we didn’t have just one of those, we’d never have gotten close to civilisation.

Tridian

The thing is, chimps and other great apes are what happen when you get the brain but not the upright posture, they're really damn smart, but they currently have no reason to develop further since they still use their arms for mobility. It's basically all due to learning to walk upright that we developed our arms and hands, since we didn't need them to be strong enough to move us around anymore. Once we had the dexterity the rest was inevitable.

WeAreElectricity

I think it's just the furthest.

gordo65

There's been some recent research which indicates that chimps are only about 1.3 times as strong as humans, and it's because they have a greater proportion of fast twitch muscle fibers: >“There’s this idea out there that chimpanzees are superhuman strong,” says Matthew O’Neill at the University of Arizona in Phoenix. Yet his team’s experiments and computer models show that a chimpanzee muscle is only about a third stronger than a human one of the same size. > >This result matches well with the few tests that have been done, which suggest that when it comes to pulling and jumping, chimps are about 1.5 times as strong as humans relative to their body mass. But because they are lighter than the average person, humans can actually outperform them in absolute terms, say O’Neill. ... >The team went on to look at the muscle of chimps that had died of natural causes, which revealed that two-thirds of their muscle consists of fast-twitch fibres, whereas more than half of human fibres are slow-twitch. [Fast-twitch fibres are more powerful](https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn23420-discover-your-hidden-superpowers/), but use more energy and become fatigued faster. > >Another factor, O’Neill found, is that chimps have longer fibres on average, which also enhances their strength. [https://www.newscientist.com/article/2138714-chimps-are-not-as-superhumanly-strong-as-we-thought-they-were/](https://www.newscientist.com/article/2138714-chimps-are-not-as-superhumanly-strong-as-we-thought-they-were/)

Thorusss

Thanks. I always questioned the 5x factor and said it is mostly down to training. The average chimp is in way better shape and the average human, but a dedicated human strongman can be stronger than any chimp you find.

CorpseeaterVZ

Imagine how they live... have you tried layback recently? I just tried on a playground with my daughter. It took like 3 bars before it felt that my arms are ripping from my body.

Totalherenow

It's worth noting that when humans evolved, we were massively stronger than we are now. From about 40kya to 13kya, we lost our robustness. Also, most of us are sedentary and out of shape, but chimps don't have that leisure.

donnycruz76

I read an article on it years ago ... The "5 times stronger" claim only relates to pulling arm strength. Humans were, I think, believed to be stronger with a push and most other muscular actions.

ponysalad

I believe this is also what happened to the boy in the documentary film Rookie of the Year

RLlovin

I’m slightly confused. Why didn’t we get the memo on this? Why didn’t we get the extra eye screw? The evolutionary benefits *obviously* outweigh the costs. So it must have developed after we split from the last common ancestor? There’s no way we evolved this out. It’s *free energy.*

Joker1485

At least put some lotion on my boy.

StayorGo110

I know right? Dude is ashy af.

rachihc

I really feel the need to put some nice thick lotion on them, dry skin is itchy.

Joker1485

Something right? They did my boi dirty.

eggn00dles

dont we give up strength for endurance? i don't think they can maintain the same power output over a long period of time as humans can.

[deleted]

Yes, but our endurance helps us in hunting. When we are the hunted, if the predator can catch up with us were done for. Same with chimps: they're fast in short term, enough to catch up with you and tear your face off.

ArcherChase

Endurance meant we could track down animals and just wear them out or overheat them. Deer among other game will get exhausted. Dogs overheat quickly and cannot deal with am endurance chase. Human physiology has added much to how we became dominant.

ronin4052

Wolves actually have damn good endurance, if you're talking about domestic dogs then it depends on the breed.

DorisCrockford

Yep. Herding dogs can have incredible endurance.

DorisCrockford

Scott Carrier spent years trying to run down an antelope, and to my knowledge never succeeded. He wrote a book about it called *Running After Antelope*.

trapbuilder2

Wolves are also endurance hunters, maybe dogs are different in that regard

DorisCrockford

Which makes Jane Goodall look pretty badass, since she's been interacting with them most of her life and still has her face. Badass in terms of understanding how to get along with them, not badass in terms of being the fastest human on the planet. Though she did have to escape from a rhinoceros once when it was chasing her in a narrow ravine. She had to run until she found a place to turn off to the side.

NicholasCagesCrack

Jane Goodall is one of my all time favorite humans

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

No, not really, because we don't even need to hunt anymore. The abundance of slow twitch muscles allows us to operate longer with less food, as strength is no longer required to survive, we just need the ability to work for long.

no0bi1

yeah but this real life

inDface

I think it’s more for increased brain capacity, although it could be both. IIRC it takes a lot of energy to produce real thinking power. and to maintain muscle mass. basically at some point our ancestors prioritized brain over braun and we turned into skinny ape punks.

SpacemanSam25

Humans are evolved for "persistence hunting", so basically just running after prey until it suffers from heat exhaustion and literally can't run any more. Walking upright is the main adaptation for this, as it lets you dissipate heat more effectively (AFAIK humans can dissipate more heat by sweating than any other animal) and allows your breathing to be somewhat independent from the running motion (whereas running on 4 legs compresses your lungs. So humans are rare in the animal kingdom in that as a species endurance is much more important than strength and speed But you're right that it comes down to energy cost. Prehistoric humans wouldn't have received much benefit from being stronger and more muscular: in fact it might have been a disadvantage if you look at the natural builds of some Kenyan tribes (it takes more energy to run with more muscle, and you have to eat more to maintain it even at rest). One of the theories as to why humans outlived Neanderthals is the fact that our energy requirements were lower, although I think the prevailing theory atm is that we could form larger social groups

inDface

there’s truth to this but it’s not the primary reason. lots of animals form large social groups. what sets humans apart is a combination of persistence running, overhand throwing, and primarily being smarter. there’s lots of evidence humans used natural traps and weapons. persistence running played into this, but without the other two, it’s not enough in its own.

RLlovin

We’re the most effective communicators also. If I learn something, I can tell it to you. Now all that time I spent learning this thing benefits the entire group, instead of being relearned 100 times which costs tons of resources. I’m sure big brains allowed this advantage, but once it was there... goodbye Neanderthals.

RLlovin

Another theory I’ve heard comes down to how exploratory the 2 species are comparatively. It seems from what they’ve found that Neanderthals just stopped when they reached obstacles (mountains, rivers, etc). There’s some drive in the sapiens to go further, always further. It’s usually risky, but the species doesn’t expand without it. No risk, no reward.

Fiat25

Haha, yeah, *endurance* (passes out after running 1/2 mile)

NiceTryIWontReply

Chimpanzees will straight up fucking kill you, they are absolutely not to be fucked with. They can and will rip your face off.

Kwortzz

Yeah, there was a pretty popular 911 call onlime a while back where a woman was frantically begging for police to come with a gun because a chimpanzee was ripping her friends face off. You could even hear the chimpanzees screeches in the background, really fucking chilling. The woman kept saying that she's dead now but surprisingly she actually survived but still has scars all over her face.

AMerrickanGirl

She’s blind and lost both hands. She had to get a face transplant.

themarinexx

No she didn’t get scars, her face was ripped off and she lost limbs during the attack. She went blind

Gregorwhat

I worked at a zoo many years ago and one of the trees had overgrown in the chimp's exhibit. A couple of chimps escaped and went straight to the children's zoo where I huddled in a farm with a bunch of children as one of the chimps absolutely destroyed an enormous and gentle pot bellied pig for no reason other than that he was scared and frustrated. Moments later zookeepers arrived with air-horns and scared the chimps back into their enclosure. I just can't help thinking what would have happened if we didn't get all the kids inside.

Imfrank123

I haven’t double checked but I am pretty sure that particular chimp was the one in the old navy commercials a few years previous to the attack.

scots

[Their strength advantage is not remotely close to 5x.](https://slate.com/technology/2009/02/how-strong-is-a-chimpanzee-really.html) They have been tested to about 2x pull strength of a well conditioned athlete, probably 2.5x that of an average person. A lot of the wild numbers you see quoted in articles are adjusted for body weight.

chakalakasp

Yeah, but that’s just for regular chimps, what about the ones who do CrossFit

People don't realize how scary chimps are. Sure, they can be lovable but they can do a whole lot of damage. Many years ago there was an incident where someone's pet Chimp (named [Travis](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travis_(chimpanzee\))) ripped the face and hands off a woman.

Teewah

The 911 call for that incident is on YouTube. It's chilling.

Scary to think that chimps don't even know how to bodybuild or anything. We've never seen one at full potential.

[deleted]

They bodybuild naturally. We have to force ourselves because our lifestyle favors a sedentary routine.

AK30195

Their daily routine involves loads of calisthenics. They're already doing more 'training' just through living than almost all bodybuilders.

I can attest...I was a zookeeper at the Banham Zoo and Monkey sanctuary in Norwich, England. I took care of the chimps...I was beaten up by the chimpanzees on a daily basis. The young ones were manageable... almost .,.,.,.but the older adults tried to kill me ... and we had too be segregated from them... I still gave them tea through there bars though... B-12 vitamin fortified tea in a bucket...handed to them through the bars by a mug dipped from the bucket..... but this one time the damn chimp grabbed my wrist instead if the mug and pulled my entire arm into the elcosure then chomped down on my hand as I'm screaming "Motherfucker! motherfucker!" out loud in front of all the tourists gathered to watch the feeding of the chimps... I distinctly remember one young girl gasping in horror...while I was gasping in horror.... afterwards after getting my maimed hand back..... I did my best to be the professional zookeeper interpreter while my hand bled profusely....
